DEANONIAN 1957 Presented by The Seniors of Gouverneur High School Gouverneur, New York Our Hands — Reaching, Building, Serving This series of pen and ink drawings presented throughout the Deanonian expresses the traits and objectives valued by the Graduating Class of 1957. We believe the qualities personified by these drawings—strength tempered by self-discipline, am- bition modulated with understanding, independence coupled with integrity—are those with which our parents, teachers, other friends, and advisors have worked to equip us. The route from childhood to self-reliance is not rigidly defined. Each individual makes his way toward adulthood through a combination of experiences never the same in two persons' lives. However, all share in common an opportunity for education. Graduation from high school marks the completion of an important phase of that education. It is altogether appropriate that hands, perhaps the most expressive of all human organs, should be given the task of illustrating the process that our schooling has taught us—the process of growing, as first we reach, then build, then serve. ANNA SANDERSON SENIORS - 1957 The Class of 1957 is the last one to have the pleasure and benefit of close association with Bertha Eckmann Alex and Alita Hunter Brown. Miss Eckmann, who left us to become Mrs. Alex last October, taught English to the eleventh grade for many years. She helped us enjoy literature and made us write—and write—and write—until our lame and halting English be- came reasonably smooth and expressive. We will owe her a debt of gratitude every time we speak, read or write the rest of our lives. Mrs. Brown in the Guidance Office has opened new worlds of opportun- ity to us, making us take an honest look at ourselves and a long look ahead. We wish both these teachers every happiness. Miss Mary Beth McDonald has been with us only two years but in that short time we have enjoyed her instruction in Art and been very grateful for her help in school projects requiring an artistic touch. 20 Our hands—reaching, building, serving. Year upon year throughout the impressionable period in our lives, our school opens the gate of knowledge wide. Like all opportunities, this is also a challenge. 21 Eleventh Grade Five Year Students Second Row—left to right: Donald Too- mey. Stephen Murray, Glenn VanValken- burg. THE DANCE COMMITTEE During the year the Dance Committee sponsored many dances after basketball games and many school dances, including the Thanksgiving Ball, and, in combination with the Student Council, the Christmas Ball. The profits from these dances purchased new records for the record file. STUDENT COUNCIL The 1956-1957 student government has been very active. It has worked successfully on several projects through the year. An assembly committee was formed which worked with faculty members to plan the general order for assemblies and to help with the problem of student conduct at assemblies. Spectator buses to away games during basketball and football seasons were obtained. The trophy cases have been cleaned and the trophies polished. Our biggest project has been the support of a Foreign Exchange Student, coming in the fall. Information was obtained from Watertown High School and the American Field Service concerning the procedure. Then we gained support from the P.T.A. and other local clubs. Foster parents were secured; shares were sold and the necessary amount of money raised. We know a foreign exchange student will make our school and community better places in which to live and learn. 4 30 Library Club Third Row—left to right: Florence Towne. Janice Boprey. Virginia Ray. V 40 V V MARCHING BAND This band, organized for outdoor appearances, has practiced marching and drill and achieved remarkable proficiency in them. It made a fine appearance at the football games with Saranac, Og- densburg, Tupper Lake, and Canton. It made civic appearances in the Hallowe'en parade, the Me- morial Day parade and at the ceremonies marking the opening of the new bridge. CONCERT BAND The concert band gave its formal concert the evening of March 28 in the auditorium. It appear- ed three times in assemblies for the benefit of the students and it served as a pep band at basket- ball games. DANCE BAND The dance band has not made as many appearances as usual this year. It played for two Parent- Teachers Association dances and for the victory dance after the last basketball game. It also enter- tained the students in assembly. SENIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA This group, composed of senior high students only, has taken part in two concerts this year—the Christmas Concert and the Orchestra-Chorus Concert in May. This concert is a combined production by the Senior High Orchestra, Junior High Orchestra, String Ensemble, Junior High Chorus, Senior High Chorus, and the A Cappella Choir. The orchestra also furnished the music at the Senior Play, the Dean Oratorical Contest, Baccalaureate services and Commencement. It took part in the May Fes- tival in Potsdam. JUNIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA This group is made up of seventh and eighth grade students only. The orchestra made its initial appearance at the annual Orchestra-Chorus Concert in May. A CAPPELLA CHOIR A selected group of eleventh and twelfth year voices, this group meets every day, its members receiving state credit for participation. It appeared several times in assembly, at the Christmas and spring concerts, in connection with the Dean Oratorical Contest, the Baccalaureate exercises and Commencement. The wood wind quintette has been a nebulous type of organization this year, practicing at times convenient to its members and giving way to crowded schedules and other rehearsals. The quintette has worked on a large repertoire: Rondo Serioso by Senaille; Petite Suite in three parts arranged from music by Corelle, Handel, Loeillet; Canzonetta by Guilmant. The music played by a woodwind quintette is usually classical in nature and composed for the most part during the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The quintette performed for criticism at the May Festival. TRUMPET QUARTETTE The Trumpet Quartette performed for assemblies, during the Band-Chorus Concert, and for vil- lage groups. The quartette has been versatile and has played a variety of types of music. On the light- er side has been Russian Dance by Updownsky and Count Me Out a jazz number. Inside the Atom Bomb was a modern style of novelty music. The quartette also played the Second Movement from Sonatina for Four Bb Trumpets by Don Gillis; Allegro by Mozart; Wintertime by Schu- mann, and a piece by Brahms. 43 44 +rma Enspmhlp____________Standing: Ann Battersby. They have, however, managed to sustain many ties with the upper high school classes through dances, assem- blies, music programs, and contributions to the newspaper. All junior high stu- dents find their building crowded, but like the independence of having their own student government and school clubs. Large seventh and eighth grade classes foreshadow a graduating class double the present size within five years. Seventh Grade Mr. Hodge's Homeroom Fourth Row: Eva Gollaher. Doris Hall, Patricia Holt.
