Riley Students and faculty alike have always been delighted by the friendly smile and warm personality of Mr. Riley. The building just would not be the same without his Irish sense of humor, those three-fifteen tea parties in his office, his assembly lectures and that cheerful Hello. Mr. Riley has a way with students that no other faculty member can surpass. He can be, and often has been, firm, but when advice is needed there is no better person to go to. He has always had a sincere interest in the school and every student in it. In return he has won the respect and liking of all those with whom he has come in contact. Xve are deeply sorry that Mr. Riley has given up his position as principal of Dean High, but we are glad that he is maintaining his interest in the activities of the school by accepting a post as assistant to the principal a11d to the guidance director. .i l This is to be the final year for our high school as we know it. Because of increased enrollment and overcrowding, our familiar building must be entirely altered. The history of Dean High School dates to 1917 when the original building was built through the generous contribution of the Misses Jennie and Cora Dean, In the fall of 1937 the annex containing gymnasium. auditorium, Oral English room, cafeteria and classrooms was opened and named in honor of Judge james C. Dolan who became a member of the Board of Education in 1905 and was its president from 1910 until 1937. The third building will be the modern structure shown in the drawing on the title page. As we, the Seniors, walk through the halls the last days before graduation memories of our school life come back to us. To keep these memories we have pictured as many of the activities that take place in the building as we could. In the succeeding pages we would like to take you through an unforget- table day - from morning to night - in our dear old G.H.S. ln The original Dean High +he audiiorium was on The second floor where ihe library, hall and chemis+ry lab are now. Where The presen+ shops are, was once lhe gymnasium wi+h bleachers on each side of +he sfeps from 'lhe hall. The pic'l'ure of The main hall shows +he office door where H s+ill is and nexf lo if 'I'he sfairway +o +he ironi doors. The sfained glass window is on The righl' belween The +wo s+a+ues. The large sludy hall wifh library in 'l'he rear has now been divided in+o 'Two sevenfh grade rooms. 4 T Faculfy l954- I 955 Frank W. To them we report first thing in the morning and from them we are reported if we are missing from our proper places. Through the homerooms nominations are made for most school offices and money is earned for the classes by means of the annual maga- zine drive. A homeroom can be anything that is needed - a forum for discussion, a study hall, a social center, a political group. It is there that the Iowa tests are administered to us each year so that we may know how effective our education has been and it is there that we are given those big white cards with the A's, Bis and - - - on them. This year every available space has a homeroom in it. The former Ag room is one and the Chemistry lab has been divided into two. Wie have indeed outgrown our school building.
