The Senior Class of l953 XYishes to express its sineere appreciation to the lloartl of litlueation for the generous gift whieh has macle possible our 1953 lleanonian. The 1955 yearbook is the only one in recent years which has not hacl atlvers tising as a part of its eontents. This is possible beeause for the first time the lloarrl of liltlueation has matle available in its bnrlget the amount usually gainecl through aclvertisements. ln the past seniors have hacl to work long antl hartl to obtain enough atlrer- tising from loeal and nearby business eoneerns to pay for the printing of their yearbook. The tlonation of this money has been a great help in retlueing the finaneial heatlaehes of prorlueing a goorl book, antl has releaserl a mnnber of atltlitional pages for pictures of school activities. lt is one more manifestation of the lloarcl's interest in stutlents. l2l ,N 'K ' 1 w- 4 Q.. ln the fall of IQSI Gouverneur 'l ligh School adopted a stand- ardized crest. Moclelecl from the Gouverneur Morris coat-of-arms, the crest has as its center piece symbols of two occupations familiar in the lionverneur area - a mine shaft representing lllllllllg and Z1 shock of wheat representing agriculture - balanced hy two sym- hols of education - the lamp of knowledge and the hook of learn- ing. This year's seniors, the class of 1953, were the first to have the stanclarcl crest on their class rings, and therefore have chosen the crest as the theme of their llcanonian. l3l Administration 1 ul Ruin B.A.. Charles l.ynde, who was graduated in 1951 and who would have been graduated in june 1953 from A. T. 1. in Canton, died suddenly in October of edema. Charles' wonderful personality, friendly smile a11d relaxed charm made him as beloved by the members of this class as by his own. Claude and Clyde Phelps, who entered the seventh grade in September 1952, lost their lives in March in a tragic automobile accident. In these few months they had impressed their class- mates as fine boys, pleasant companions and cooperative students. They will be greatly missed. ll7l EH 'F Y? f P Cfx XX1 I MEX if w,x' A ,X L, xf b'.. These halls . . . ! These clubs . . . ! President Frank Mason thundered at his Unnecessary Investigation Committee. Senator McRiley and Senator Van Weller, go out and bring me an answer. Are clubs necessary ? Fighting their way through a quadruple line of jabbering students, the two Senators reached a quiet spot in front of the office, where they agreed McRiley would investigate the senior high clubs and Van Weller the junior high groups. After shaking hands and agreeing to meet for tea, they bravely plunged into the turbulent crowd of students just as the second bell rang. Senator McRiley headed for the third floor where he tiptoed into a meeting of Miss Vail's Library Club. Please, he asked politely, Will you tell me what you do F Joyce Lee, President of the club explained: We learn how to help at the library desk-the desk is very busy now that the school is so big. We prepare the new books for circulation and we help Miss Vail keep records. Sounds useful and necessary, Senator McRiley conceded. Across the hall he heard voices coming out of a pitch dark room. What's going on here F he demanded. Mr. Bush snapped on the light. 'tThis is the Projector Club, he explained. We show movies at noon for the students to enjoy. But mostly these boys learn how to operate all the visual aid equipment and to make minor repairs, like splic- ing film. They are on call in their study periods to help teachers. I'm sure that's necessary, Mr. McRiley sighed. Hearing a voice reading off lists, he peeked in the door of Miss Eckmann's room. Sally Craig was reading the assignments for the next week's Dean Hi-Lites. 'tFriday night, the editor explained. W e stay until six o'clock to put the paper together. Monday the mimeograph staff goes to workf' But why the mountains of crepe paper ? The members are working on the decorations for the May Dance at which we crown a King and Queen chosen by the students. Satisfied, the good Senator headed for the gym from which he could hear an outburst of shouting and some grunts. He found the Football Club running through some plays in an effort to teach new football prospects some of the funda- mentals of the game. Sometimes we use movies, Mr. l.aFalce said, to analyze this year's good and bad plays. We want these boys to know something about football. A good idea, Mr. McRiley agreed heartily. Next he walked to the Ag room where he found a note on the door, Gone to Kansas City. Back next week. Ex- hausted by this time he trudged to the Homemaking room for his tea. Meantime Senator Van Weller found the junior High clubs in full swing. She reached the door of the junior lab just in time to hear a gasp of surprise from the young people gathered around the table. They were the junior Science Club doing some science tricks. Across the hall some members of the Girls' Hobby Club were cutting and pasting jokes in a scrap book for the hospital while others cro- cheted or knitted. The Busy Bees told her they thought their posters about good manners in the cafeteria had made the students manner-conscious. The junior Historical Club were doing up big bundles. We are always working on a charitable project such as the Bundle Drive, they told her. We want to be good citizens. l38l Very commendable - all of them, Senator Van Weller approved, heading for the Homemaking room and her tea. LL The two investigating Senators relaxed with tea and crumpets while Miss Stafford explained that the girls snipping and sewing across the room were the Future Homemakers of America working on their projects. They study ways to become better homemakersf' she said. I hope some of this year's seniors belonged to it, Senator McRiley muttered into his cup. By the way, Senator Van Weller spoke up, I saw the F. F. A. on Tele- vision last night-a banquet somewhere. Bill Lamb was explaining that the mem- bers learn to judge livestock, and farm products, explore new ideas in farming and get practical experience through home projects. After a few hours rest and a good dinner the investigators returned to in- spect the clubs that met in the evening. Out of Miss Passino's room came a burst of rapid speech that Senator Mc- Riley could identify as French. The French Club is playing a French game, Mary Livingston told him Qin Englishj. We study French culture and try to develop international understanding. Last year we took a wonderful trip to Montreal and hope to take more in the future. Next door there was more excited talking. Discussion Club, Miss Stiles stated. We discuss anything of interest to students-anything the students want to bring to us-and help them with their problems. The committee had one more call to make. At the Corbin home they found the Senior Seminar putting the .finishing touches on an erudite discussion of the United Nations designed to be presented as a panel before some community organ- izations. Next morning they presented their report to President Mason. This Unnecessary Committee agrees, Senator McRiley said, that the clubs in Gouverneur High School are worthwhile, educational and necessary. Besides they're fun, Senator Van VV eller added. Prizes Donna Tessmer placed first and Nancy VValrath second in the local poster contest sponsored by the Medical Association of New York State. Shirley Goodison's essay on Youth's Contribution to Citizenshipl' was se- lected to go to the district contest sponsored by the D.A.R. Her essay on The American Heritage won first prize in the contest sponsored by the Northern Federation of Women Clubs. Dianne Drury won first prize and Louis Curtis second prize in the local V. F. The Senior Play and the Dean Oratorical Contest are, of course, traditional and have maintained their high standard of excellence under Mr. Welch's direction. But this year there have been other opportunities for students to express their inter- est and try out their talent. A seventh grade club called, hopefully, Future Broadway Stars and directed by Mr. Blumenthal, has mroduced a one-act play, Elmer, in assembly and a talent show. The junior Actors' Club of seventh and :ighth grade students under the direction of Miss Hunter and Mr. Cromie has produced a one-act play for assembly and several worthwhile dramatic exercises within their own club. The Junior class presented an amusing comedy, They Put On A Play, in a joint assembly. In May they planned to appear in Massena in exchange for a Massena group's appearance here. These chances for dramatic experience in various grades should insure fine Senior plays in the future. i Dean Oratorical Contest Speakers Seeond row left to right: Patricia Patton. Julia Foster. Football Starting out a year of great improvement i11 athletics at tiouverneur lligh School, the varsity football team, coached by Frank l.aFalce and assistants Charles Mctiuire and Townsend Carpenter, played fast and aggressive ball, win- ning six games and losing only one. This six-to-one record, the best football tally the school has had in several years, was the result of much hard work and coopera- tion on the part of both the boys and the coaches. Because of their will to win and their ability to conquer their opponents, the team had the backing of a very enthusiastic student body as well as of many village football fans. i Football Schedule September 20 - Malone I4 tiouverneur lg September 27 - Canton 0 Gouverneur I3 October 4 - Tupper Lake IQ Gonverneur zo October II - Potsdam I9 tiouverncur zo October I8 - Saranac Lake 6 Gouverneur 33 October 25 - Massena 43 tiouverneur o November I - Ogdensburg o Gouvcrncnr 7 XVon 6 g l.ost I Varsity Basketball liar-k raw, I1-fl ln right: James R1-ynnlmis.
