ACADEMY HERALD 1987 MOVING ON 2 Opening Doors And Moving On . . . TABLE OF CONTENTS Seniors.......................11 Underclassmen.................51 Faculty ......................58 Sports........................68 Activities ...................90 Dorms........................122 1 20 87 Yearbook Dear Class of '87: It has been a pleasure working with you—the more since we began our Gould careers in the same year, and I am pleased that the editors granted me space for a parting shot. I fully expect that the satisfaction from your Gould experience will amplify at appropriate moments when friendships with special people and teachers' efforts on your behalf are reflected through the years. Your efforts for the Academy are already noticed and appreciated, and I hope that when the time comes you can find ways to extend them to the next generation of Gould students. So far as your own future is concerned, I cannot resist the urge to offer a little advice. There is lots of talk these days about how complex and diffi- cult is life in the eighties. The complexity is an illusion. Underneath that veneer are just people much too caught up in getting and taking and staying in fashion. At the risk of provoking yet another school-wide guffaw about taking risks, I suggest again that the secret to long-term happiness is less likely to be found in Cancun or in fighting off gray hair than it is in an individual decision to accept and to respond to the needs of some other. It is a great comfort to me to know that Gould Academy graduates seniors who are fit for more than living lip sync lives and committed to more than personal comfort and success. I hope enough tension remains on the string between you and Gould Academy so that you feel free to give it a tug once in awhile, and I do hope you will use it to keep in touch with us. We cannot go on without your continued interest and support. With thanks for the good times, I wish you all the best of luck. Most sincerely, 4 William P. Clough III Headmaster DEDICATION When one thinks of leoders, one sees o person stonding out front, pointing the woy, feorless ond strong. Mr. Dohrmonn has been the senior doss advisor and leader. Not only that, but the class has seen him as a teacher coach, dorm head, father, husband, and friend. How he manages to juggle these roles is o feot in itself. Yet the most amazing thing is that he never loses his smile. Mr. Dohrmonn is o leader from the bock sear”. Not out front pointing the woy, but in the bock, pointing out the road ahead, allowing students to take their own steps. He has shown students that there will not olwoys be someone to tell them whor to do. rhot learning is not following, but doing. The woy that he does this is by being very friendly, helpful, and informative. By being straightforward and honest he has buit a strong relationship with the students. When we see your smile we know that something is going right. Thank you Mr. Dohrmonn. 5 Don t Lose Heort Chris Williamson For the first rime in my life I've token to deep waters From the shelter of the cove I've gone soiling on the seo And I will olwoys be there Soiling deep upon the waters And you will never see the lost of me Don't lose heort It's the beginning not the end It's just o start you’ve found o family of friends Don't lose heort And I'll be bock with you again You've finally found o family of friends 6 I've taught you oil my tricks Now you hove token to deep waters And like I always told We'd soil just like o dreom And I will always be there Soiling deep upon the waters And you will never ever see the lost of me Don't lose heart It's the beginning not the end It's just o start you’ve found o family of friends Don't lose heart And I'll be bock with you again You've finally found o family of friends 8 TIM DEVIN Wisdom is the principol thing; therefore get wisdom: ond with oil thy getting get understanding. — Proverbs Thanks to oil the faculty or Gould especially Mr. Cousins. Next ore our freshmen Joanna the Shot” Donaldson ond Alice Killer Colyeor. Both astounded capacity crowds with their basketball debuts. This group trouged through swamps, hiked big mountains, canojed beautiful lakes, and even rock climbed 100 degree angles. This group was also a great help to the Gould community. One day the group was asked to stack a barn full of hay. With no hesitations or mumbles from the group, the Club managed to stock It in almost recorded time. What on energetic group!?l The group consists of: John Cole (What do you meon we're not climbing? , This is all we're climbing? ),- Aaron Sassevile (Spidey); Jeff Stollier (I love rock to rock climb.); Dove Barstow (An outdoorsman kind of guy.); John Cohen (tension, TENSIONI); Danielle Hansler (Mr. Chandlerrrrrrrr); Matt Goldberg (I'm not commando. There is only one solution: MOUNTAIN DAY!) This year's Mountain Day achieved its purpose os o releose volve. The day was one of symbolic fasting to remember the hungry oround the world. A limit of two apples per per- son was declared which precipitated o great event: The Greot Rush For Goodies . After teochers ond students were divided into groups of ability ond choice the anxious Gouldies were wisked off, with extra Telstor buses, to Evan's Notch in the White Mountain Notional Forest. The doy was fun, ond after o crowded lunch the bus ride was rime enough to reflect on the doy ond begin anew with refreshed vigor. 93 HALLOWEEN... 94 AND MORE FALL STUFF... THE COOKIE MACHINE A typical Friday morning assembly? Hardly! It all began with the fearless proctors explaining to Gould the trust fall and a process coll the cookie machine . The cookie machine was constucted of the student body and teachers lined up to Hanscom. Mr. Clough was then shuffled on the school's arms to his office. The machine's success was tremendous with the undulating movement of Mr. Clough, The Glacier , steady and completed after only twenty minutes. Mr. Clough, who was hoping for on eosy Friday before o full weekend, was quoted to soy, UG, my neck is stiff! The whole event will be remembered os the day of triumph for the Clough Cookie Machine . What does the future hold? It is the author s opinion that every Gould faculty member should participate in the machine to achieve full unify of Gould and more good loughs. 95 96 The stoge opens on o mound of earth. Suddenly, the mound of earth moves. . . still ogoin . . . moves ogoin. Out flies the oftermoth of Mole's spring cleaning. The Mole himself emerges, ond with o Hong Spring Clean- ing ”, his adventures begin. The audience is token through Grohom's half — mon, half — onimol world with o minimun of ver- sitile props, ond good lighting effects to show seasons ond ploces. Many of the props were moved about the cost itself, which was on effective woy to move the audience without stopping the action. Indoors ond outdoors blended together, len- ding on onimoliry to oil of the scenes. A hard thing to overcome was the conversion of the book into ploy form, but the cost did on ex- cellent job capturing the dry ond subtle British sense of humor, os well os the overall theme of the book in their rendotion. Grohom's ideas carried though very deorly — perhaps even more so because of the audience. The ploy con teoch o lor of lessons to the Outside World, even though Ratty, Lynn Kumre, ond Mole, Kim Simmons, never went there. We will be embarking on our own adventures very soon. Friendships ond home will be just os impor- tant to us os it is to Otter; Jenny Coffey, Mole. Dodger, Joke Boone, ond Ratty — especially if we ore os rosh ond headstrong os Toad, Dorren Green. Or sould we ger some more firewood? Winter Mountaineering seemed to wind down down before it reolly wound up. Everyone was sod that it ended so soon. Besides moun- tain peaks, many heights were reached in this small group. And many depths were probed — some unfortunately with evil lurking rocks. Cliff jumping wos the sport and o broken leg was the end of that, when the guy with the funny first name got o chance to practice his outdoor medicine. When rock and ice grew boring, the ever- octive winter moutoineers turned their attention to trees, and spent five days climbing ond gathering select trees for the spectoculor Winter Cornivol bonfire. And the snow architecture — massive poloces of luxeriont culinary efficiency. All that firewood gathering was sure worth it ot night when it got cold ond you could sit in the worm smoke ond dry out (or melt) boors. When they could nor be found in the mountains (which indeed was rare), the mountaineers could be found doing Jone Fonda aerobics ond dreaming of the peaks to be climbed, ond the endless supply of firewood for those unforgettable nights around the fire... 101 “What would you like to drink? , ond they ore off ogoin. After Mr. 5rorets gove rhe Hunger Briefing, discus- sions begon ond hunger become on issue. In ond our of our groups we dealt with world hunger in very personal ways. The way we chose ro deal with rhe World Hunger Problem wos our own.-Eric Moder 106 JUNIOR 4-POINT Whot is if onywoy; this 'Outward Bound’?”, you moy well ask. The question taunted me throughout March break. Outward Bound had a different effect on everyone, and olthough it is hard to explain, it is worth trying. Even though people went into the trip with mixed feelings everyone was affected by the experience. This is because the social barriers and everyday rush to get nowhere fast hod disap- peared. The only worries were to reach the destination ond keep the group together. I thought my group hod o positive attitude because even when we suffered from sun stroke, ond fought over routes to take, meals to cook, ond the chores, we learned to trust eochother ond stick together. After the trip I asked myself, Whot was the pur- pose onywoy? Why spend eight days in the woods?” There is no solid answer bur the trip did ef- fect me ond does effect me now. It gave me o perspective on one person's size in the world. Dur- ing my solo I thought these people ond the impor- tant things I should be owore of ond shouldn't forget. In coming owoy, I feel that more Outward Bounds need to be explored - Som McGee 107 SOPHOMORE 4-POINT The Sophomore point involved moking musical instruments ond learning to ploy them. We were divided into groups depending on which instrument we aspired to ploy. I feel certain constucting the instruments hod nothing to do with the Sophomore point, but wos on indirect test of patience, per- sistence ond the ability to glue pieces of wood together that would not do so within the lows of science. When we finally got the strings on our instruments (except Todd, who never quite mastered that) we rook some lessons ond practiced much. At the end of the week we joined together around our combustion free comp fire in Binghom to ploy o few tunes, like Bile' Dem Cobboge Down” ond Hot Cross Buns . We discovered that rhough our music perhaps locked the sophistica- tion of Jim Scott, DOA ond even Old Grey Goose, it hod o definote personal chorm. The next day they stopped ot Gettysburg ond were treated to four by Mr. Hill. The others left on Saturday for o nine hour train trip. After o nights rest they headed out to Mount Vernon, ond hod lunch by the Lincoln Memorial. The visit to the Viet- nam Memorial wos o moving experience. For the next few days the freshmen doss wos very busy. They met with Attorney General Jim Tierney ond Senator George Mitchell. One afternoon while relaxing, Mr. Fiske fought some how to ploy poker, while others got lost on the subway frying to go shopping. The wider variety of activities builds not only o more interesting hlghschool experience, but gives important exposure necessary in broadening chorocter and forming o stronger Gould. As editors of the Academy Herald, Elaine and I, were involved in on excellent example of o broadening experience. Through the long hours of typing, planning, picture taking, and developing we were forced to rake the great responsibility of completing a yearbook. More importantly the Academy Herald gave us the chance to see Gould Academy work together and complete a project. Sure we felt alone for much of the time with only Ms. Lee to assist, bur now its clear that there exists a genuine concern for a good yearbook. Pictures, writing, cooperation, ond ideas came from the whole school. Elaine and I sincerely hope we completed a product the whole school con enjoy. Before leaving however Elaine and I wont to tell you more about being involved in activities or Gould, whether you ore a student or faculty member. The involvement of students ond faculty in projects such os the Academy Herald, Literary Mogozine, the Community Post, (Tug Pats, Reachout, or the many other activities has a direct rela- tionship with the bonds between students and faculty. It is the extra things after school and the classroom that ore going to make Gould stronger. To this year s students: many of you expressed concern on the topics of the relationships between students and faculty, and the qualify time you spend at Gould. If o richer experience is what you wont, do something about it. Join the yearbook, Reachout, or a softball or basketball league. If you don't try, forget if. If you only put effort into things that hove immediate rewords, then you deserve to sit in an empty experience. Rather than putting your energy in complaining, start taking advantage of the great stuff Gould Academy hos to offer. Through the year- book, Elaine and I had a good experience and made o close friend of Ms. Lee. If you want the same, pur some ef- fort into it. To the faculty: There ore so many activities that you seem to limit yourselves only to the activity you're directly involved in. To encourage students to diversify it would be helpful if you become more concerned with Gould ac- tivities on a larger scale. By keeping up with the other activities you, as on adviser, can encourage odvisees in becoming involved with the school on o broader basis than maybe your advisees had nor considered. Concern about Gould Academy ond its students must be generated by you and con be spread by you. Our concern is for a better Gould Academy and we are optimistic that our school can become even better. We hope the yearbook is os good us it was hard to do. We also wish the best of luck to future yearbook staffs. It's a thankless job but the rewards last longer than the work you put into it.-Eric Moder, Elaine Bicknell 132 THE PICKLE JAR The struggle between good ond evil hos been fought throughout history. The clash is never ending ond exists in everything living ond spiritual. The Gould Academy Campus hos become o nucleus for such struggles, which hove been controlled in one moteriol object whose surrounding gloss walls oct os o force shield ogoinst the internal commotion. This bottle between good ond evil is for the survival of these entities in o world ond o universe of weak, easily in- fluenced individuals. In o jor the two swing in o balance ond ore controlled for the good of the Gould Academy mon ond woman. This yeor the supreme responsibility for the monitoring of the conflict sits with Eric Moder of second floor Holden, room thirty. The atmosphere is constantly measured ond maintained at on equilibrium between negative ond positive force. For o complete understanding, it is necessary to know the purpose of the jor ond its unnatural control on the Gould Academy Campus. In the works is o master plan that wos conceived four years ago by several for-sighted students. The plan is simple yet great enough to change the current ond future students learning here or Gould. With the obsence of good ond evil the students con grow ond strengthen themselves unhampered by the cosmic forces. The schemers gave birth to their idea when the perfect holding element wos found, on unobtrusive pickle jor. After o short religious ceremony, they blessed the jor ond filled it with the contents. The substonces chosen to repre- sent the forces of good ond evil were sacrificed to the Jor ond placed in the shielding walls. For the forces of good there wos o remaining clossic Vlossic pickle, o big, juicy ond delicious Sunkisr orange, ond on unwroped Sniker's Bor. The forces of evil were represented by one, hoiry, smelly rabbit s foot, o large, gross leech, ond several chewed popcorn bolls. As o neutral agent some foce wiskers were sprinkled in. The mixture of contents float ond ooze caus- ing an orgy of limitless power and green slime. With the plan olive there is no stopping it. Each yeor a guordian is chosen and sworn to the ways of the Jor. The responsibility is enormous ond hos its affect. Although some may crock with the stress ond tension, life with The Pickle Jor'- (no longer o pickle jor) moy bring, most occept their destiny ond conquer the challenge. The guardians see the power of the Jor ond ore encouraged to strike our ond take the initiative”. With both good ond evil con- trolled, the guardian con use the power of The Pickle Jor” os his inspiration. In this yeor, nineteen hundred ond eighty-seven, the Academy Herald, yearbook of Gould Acodemy, hos been partially dedicated to the Pickle Jor . This occurence is evidence of the growing influence The Pickle Jor hos in Gould life. In order for the development of the students to equal that of the guardian’s, Gould should occept the reality of The Pickle Jor” ond use the power to its fullest. 130 COMMENCEMENT MAY 23, 1987 We don't need our wl-ni onymore.
