Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1986 volume:

A VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO MR. TODD. WITHOUT HIM, THIS YEARBOOK WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE. r w i j Table of Contents Seniors......... Faculty.......... 56 Sports........... 68 Activities....... 92 4 Point...........110 Dormitories.....117 Underclassmen ... 126 Commencement . . 134 It has been said that a teacher is one who brings to the surface what has been waiting to be exposed. The class of 1986 has two very special teachers who have helped to bring out the best in all of us. The first is Peter “Rat” Rackliffe. He can often be found riding his mountain bike or just happily walking through cam- pus. It is Rat who understands the kid in us all, and at times when we act foolish or get in trouble he is always there to bail us out. He is a teacher who teaches more than Algebra and logarithyms. He helps us to think logically. He is a father who is always there to parent us when we need it. Most important of all, he is a friend who stands by us. 4 John Provencher, otherwise known as John the Maintenance man. There is never a day when John doesn’t smile and wave at the students. He makes time for us with simple gestures like a wave or the shouting of “Hello there.” John takes us very seriously. He recognizes our struggle with growing up, and he is always there to lend a hand of advice. He is a loving father and in his own right one of the best teachers we’ll ever have. Someday maybe he will understand that he taught us some of the most special things. ■■■ ■■■ 6 When it seems that everyone is worried for themselves, Buying plans for fallout shelters, stocking up the shelves, Living in the fast lane, and staying high at night, Thinking that by accident we'll blow out all the lights. 7 Look now at the potter whose wheel is spinning 'round, Shaping with her hands the past and future from the ground; Cups that will be filled and drunk, so warm in wintertime. Plates and bowls for dinner served with candlelight and wine: 8 She believes, she believes, By her work it's so easy to see That the future is more than the following day, It's fashioned securely in the clay. 9 11 LAUREN FOSTER “He who reveals to me what is in me and helps me to externalize it in fuller terms of self-trust, is my real helper, for he assists me in the birth of those things which he knows are in me and in all men.” — W. John Murray Many thanks to all my “real helpers.” TOM CANNEY All of life is learning, and one learns through per- sonal experience. Thank you to the people who made these experiences happen. 12 MICHAEL BLAKEMORE While in these days of quiet desperation As I wander through the world in which I live I search everywhere for some new inspiration But it’s more than cold reality can give If I need a cause for celebration. Or a Comfort I can use to ease my mind, I rely on my immagination. — Joel LIZ HOPPER Ghost to change so from one day to another Flat gray Filters through angelic white Of other days; past life only to have altered Within hours leaving sudden character Understood; a lifeless flat grey Comprehesion; angelic white T. C. “This too can be experienced with a completely ex- panded awareness.” “What an absurd amount of energy I have wasted all my life trying to figure out how things really are” when all the time they weren’t.” To Lauren, Tom, Annie, The Hills, Mr. C., Mr. G., And everyone else at Gould and especially Mom and Kevin, without whose love and understanding I wouldn’t have been able to find myself. I wish you love and happiness. 13 SARAH (SALLIE)FISKE You can go south in the winter. Be what you are, a goose. Honk all the moon out the ocean. Your clothes can fit you loose.” — Margaret Roche “To restrict oneself to the familiar is to limit the possibilities for pleasure, and to limit them sharply.” — Daniel T. Politoske Well after fourteen years I'm ready to leave, but I don’t regret a single minute of my life here. Thanks to everyone for everything. If one were properly to perform a difficult and subtle act, he should first inspect the end to be achieved and then, once he had accepted the end as a desirable he should forget it completely and concentrate soley on the means. I haven’t found one yet. Hence 1 am left to my own devices. There are too many names, places+things to mention without get- ting into the sentimental tidbit syndrome. Nothing more, no superfluous phrases. Just you understand who you are and why you are. And so 1 leave with a quiet smile and a quiet thanks. “Which can say more than this rich praise that you yourself are you.” Shakespeare 44 PATTY GILES I was hoping to find a nice compact senior quote that wasn’t too sentimental or corney, but I couldn’t find one to say everything I haven’t said in four years. With a conglomeration of punkers, scholars, and scurvy-dogs. Holden could not help but be an influence, not only on Earth, but in the full Milky Way. With the ominous power of the Vortex assisting, we remained supreme. Everyone on campus took part in the Vortex’s bipping, bopping pit of jubilant joy. Yes, all of us here at Holden are happy campers and will forever owe our thanks and gratitude to the enforcers: Mr. Kirk Siegel, Mr. Robert Jesscn and the man who has firm control, “Mr. Groovy,” Gary Hill. 120 121 DAVIDSON 122 124 TOWNIES D. Lindsey continues to travel and to tell stories, wonderful stories about beautiful places, beautiful things and most of all about the people. He tells stories about people he’d met but often had not. peo- ple who no one had ever met and yet who everyone knew. He made fairy talcs true, he made listeners listen and listeners laugh, sometimes they cried. He told the truth and revealed the amazing beauty of it all. In his stories he asked questions. At the end of each of Lindsey’s stories he would ask the people listening to turn to the person on their right and tell them the place they had always wanted to go to but never had gone or the thing they had always wanted to do but had never done. He did so because usually it lead to more stories between all kinds of people, people who were different each in their own way, people who learned and taught by tell- ing stories and by asking questions ... Valedictory address Leah Garnett May 24, 1986 134 135 So, if you had been worried that tomorrow wouldn't come, Look to see the ones whose lives are following the sun. And the hope that springs so clearly from the work they do Will spread a little further when it finds a place in you. We believe, we believe. By our work it's so easy to see That the future is more than the following day It's fashioned securely in the clay.
