Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1985 volume:
“
1 Good smart bears come in many forms. They are people, places, things, ideas, dreams, and illusions that we curl up with when the world gets chilly, or get a good firm smack from when we step out of line. In The Hotel New Hampshire, John Irving defines the need for these creatures: .. This is what we do: we dream on. and our dreams escape us almost as vividly as we can imagine them. That is what happens, like it or not. And because that’s what happens, this is what we need: we need a good smart bear.” Meet two very smart bears. Mr. Lorenzo Baker has introduced us to the Pleasure Dome, principles of Taoism, ups and downs of mountaineering, and, of course. Jean-Luc Ponty’s song Renaissance,’’ to which he sets his slide presentations. In one of his assemblies, he also introduced the concept of the Peak Experience. the moment in mountaineering when you finally discover that the view really is worth the climb. He has instilled the value of these moments directly into the programs which he advises (the proctors. Winter Mountaineering, eyeling and Blue Key) and to all who know him. Mr. Baker is a talented guy, juggling his admissions dormatory and extracurricular activities as well a maintaining his colorful sense of humor, closeness with students, beard, dedica- tion and hip young professional image. A very special thanks from the proctors. Mr. Paul McGuire, a master of Oxford County etiquette, has shared his no- nonsense New England ideology and brought out the Mainer in all of us. His constant support of Gould athletic teams has not gone unnoticed, nor has his genuine concern for and sensitivity to the needs of students, be it for a good verbal dousing or his smile (which incidentally could conquer Ireland). Thank you, to one of the biggest people we know. The class of 1985 dedicates its yearbook to these two men for being the good smart bears that we all have turned to at some point. You may even say that they’re “Smarter than the average bcar(s).’’ 10 11 14 15 Nathan Duston Inhibited Audiomation In my room strips of white in a complex pattern Luminescence barely lighting my paper Intricate compositions part of me hyper explosion into the star cycle latticeworks of fibers draped and contorted a brown bowl spiraling oneness of me tired can I achieve a final peace? maybe Thanks Jill and everyone else. Field Hockey, Ski Team, Tennis Thank you to everybody who understood that I couldn’t speak English at the beginning and who helped me. I would like to thank any teachers and all my friends. I lived in Gehring Hall on the noisy third floor. My best friend Tucker often woke us up by barking when she was let out by Miss Mellett. But this year means a lot to me and I’ll remember this time, when I’m back in old Germany. Katy Holden Life to me is not measured in years, but instead, in smiles, laughter and tears. Thank you very much to everyone who made these four years special. 17 Jennifer Lynn Allen “Jenn” If you want to get eggs you can’t buy at a store, You have to do things never thought of before. Why to get at the egg of one very small Dawf, We had to pry all of one mountain top off! Then I heard of some birds who lay their eggs, if you please. That taste like the air in the holes of Swiss cheese, And they live in big Zanzibar — Zanzibar trees! So I ordered a treeful. The job was immense. But I needed those eggs and said, “hang the expense!” All through with the searching, All through with the looking, I had all I needed! And now for the cooking .. from “Scrambled Eggs Super” By Dr. Seuss, eh? Thank you Gould Academy (and Rowdy). With love and laughter, Jenn. Jennifer Griffen Then wilt thou not be loth To have this paradise, but shalt possess A paradise within, the happier far ... — John Milton (Paradise Lost) Not that the story need to be long But it will take a long while To make it short — Thoreau Way to be Little bingo! --Jf 18 Michelle Prince Friends; unknowingly filling my soul with little things; a quick smile or a laugh down the hall. Being there; doing anything; doing nothing, filling my life. If I learned one thing, I learned a million. But the most important thing I learned is to open up and let the friends in. Gaining forever a part of them, and they forever a part of me. Through pleasant and through cloudy weather we’ve been friends together. Do not say to me “good night, time to go.” wake me up tomorrow and bid me “hello.” Ruth Wescott Happiness is like time and space, We make and measure it ourselves; It is a fancy, As big, as little, as you please; Just a thing of contrasts and comparisons. — George Louis Palmella Busson DuMaurier “I always contradicted myself. Are you willing to put yourself out for one another? Are you willing to go that second mile? No matter how busy or weary you are? When love flows freely in the hearts of all men; hatred, jealousy, war and discension will be no more and love will reign supreme. Without love there can be no peace, no understanding. Love cannot be learned from books. You cannot be told about love. You just have to be love and open your hearts and let it flow. Love stems from Me — 1 am love. Love is the language of silence, it is the international language understood by heart, not by the mind! Your eyes, your heart, your attitude, your whole being can convey what you are feeling toward another. 24 Judie Davidson Activities: Outing Club, Rec. She’s been hurt and she just can’t believe. In Kari's eyes I’ve seen everything I’ve wanted to see. I’ve seen all that a woman can be. All I know is that I’ve got to be Something in Kari’s eyes. When our love was born it came on like a storm. Taking both of us by surprise Thought we’d give it time so we could make up our minds But Kari I know I’ve made up mine. In Kari’s eyes I’ve everything I’ve wanted to see. I’ve seen all that a woman can be. All I know is I’ve got to be something in Kari’s eyes. I’m not sure if I like it but I know I’ll hit bottom someday. Darryl Swirsky Sometimes some people are confused and come across seeming selfish and immature. Throush risks and mistakes they can learn about themselves, others and life in general. In searching for what they want they don’t always find it, but they persevere. Gould has helped me to become a sensitive person who is concerned for others. I still have this great desire to perform and this will never go away. Gould has been both a wonderful and a painful growing ex- perience for me. I am glad to have been part of it and I am glad to be moving on. Thank you to all the teachers who have taught me that the beauty in life is being what you are and not what someone else says you should be. We wound up the season 7-6-2 after a stunning mid-season winning streak. High scorers were Eunice Pikuzinski with 10 goals and Bronwyn Matthews with 9 goals. The success of this enjoyable season can be attributed to the high degree of dedication, sportsman- ship and respect for each other that the team developed during the season. 1985 will undoubtedly pro- vide the team with another challenging season (including the opportunity for promotion to “goddess” status by a likely victory over Holderness). Eight Varsity players will return, and along with new team members, will make next year follow in the recently established “tradition” of Gould field hockey ex- cellence. For Coach Dohrmann next year pro- mises to be a good one, with returning Junior Paul Natal (MAISAD All Star) leading the way. Huskies have 8 returning Varsity players which gives them the edge over most teams. The only losses they will suffer are that of: leading rcbounder Jay Moore, forward Brian Grover, forward-guard Jim Feeney, and guard Nate Duston. Paul Natal 84 BASKETBALL J.V. The Varsity Lacrosse team had a very nice season finishing with a record of 5 and 8. The team however maintained a high level of class and put together some good games. High points of the season included a overtime victory over Cape Elizabeth and two good games with the runners up in the state Kents Hill. Gould also accounted for 8 out of 10 points at the ALLSTAR game against Hebron. All in all not many games were won, but we had alot of fun and learned alot about ourselves, which was what was emphasized all year. 90 91 The huge St. Dorn’s first baseman loomed over the bag as Paige stepped to bat. Her shadow stretched all the way to home plate and she dwarfed Mr. Newell, the first base coach, standing some 8 feet away from her. The score was tied, in the bottom of the seventh. Several members of the Boys J.V. Lacrosse team were leading the crowd assembled on the bank behind the Headmaster’s house in cheering for the girls. It was late in the afternoon and the Gould-St. Dorn’s game attracted the biggest crowd of the season. Tension was running at an unbearably high level, the St. Dorn’s team, known for the monstrous propor- tions of it's female softball players, had NEVER been defeated by the Gould girls. The softball bench was buzzing with unrestrained excitement, Coach Dohrmann nervously shifted from foot to foot in the third base coach’s box. The first pitch whizzed over the plate, a ball. The second pitch — the crowd rose to their feet to see where the ball went... it careened through a hole between center and right field ... a base hit!!! The runner came in and as her foot had no sooner hit the plate then the Gould team burst into the center of the field, congratulating themselves for the type of playing which Gould girl’s softball had not seen in the past decade. I woke up to a blaring alarm clock which, no matter how much I pushed and pulled the knobs, wouldn’t shut off. 1 slammed it and could hear similar struggles with alarms down the hall. I dragged myself to my feet, and stumbled toward my door, stubbing my toe. I opened the door and the fluores- cent lights blinded me. 1 let my eyes adjust, took a deep breath and sprinted down the freezing cold cor- ridor toward a shower that would be no warmer. Known for cold showers, frequent false fire alarms, at odd hours, lack of carpeting, and echoing giggles during study hall; Gehring also has a very special quality: diversity. Made up of many, very different individuals living close together, Gehring, this year, has offered an exciting, ever-changing atmosphere, and will no doubt continue in this way. Perhaps, even one year, Gehring will outright win Winter Carnival!!! MICHELLE PRINCE’85 114 115 Davidson 116 117 Holden Holden’s mascot for the Winter Carnival was HE-MAN and so it should be with Spike, Sam, Spence and of course Mr. Hill; the dorm was definitely a hulk sanctuary. With Beast screaming “IN DORMS” and “STUDY HALL” The Vortex was never safe. For athletes there was ping-pong, pool, foosball, tag and as always late night Holden Raiders. Under the great strategist Robert Jessen, Holden devastated the other dorms in Winter Carnival and Toilet Bowl. Spence, Spike, Harold, and that bot- tomless pit of trivia knowledge DK made sure that the Flashpoint title would remain in the hands of 2nd floor Holden. We wish to commemorate those whose service was extra-ordinary. Such as George who sacrificed his body so we could win the tobaggon race and Peter Cline who destroyed the defense (and his shoulder) in Spink Rink.
