ACADEMY HERALD 1984 Gould Academy Bethel, Maine Ed. Roberta Zwecker i The 1984 Yearbook Is Dedicated to Mr. Davis Mr. Davis, Ah Mr. Davis those who knew him will never forget him, even though he forgot to pass back our papers. How can we forget going to class in “the jungle” and those thousands of bad puns and jokes from that seemingly never ending supply of wit. Someday Mr. Davis will even match his clothes but until then we will remember him as a great coach and teacher, and an excellent friend and comrade. Keep your ear out of the car door Mr. Davis. With love, The Class of'84 and to Edward Hitchcock Mr. Hitchcock, If it wasn’t for you most of us would not have attended Gould. You are someone who has found faith in all of us. You provided a sense of caring in this community as well. We will miss your friendly smile. Good luck in whatever path you lead. With love. The class of’84 3 In Memory of ROBERT P.CHADBOURNE JR. Although we did not have a winning season, we learned a great deal about team spirit, and worked together to achieve a tangible goal: to play to the best of our ability, and enjoy the game. Also, congratulations for placing sec- ond in the league! Our strong victory over Kents Hill closed the season with a record of seven wins and only five losses — the first winning season for Goulds Field Hockey team in a long time. The tough and mean defense per- mitted 15 goals in our 12 games. The defense consisted of: Jenn Allen, Sarah Baker, Erika Dresser, Missi Healey, Deidre Har- ris, Marybcth Isham, Janet Sanborn, and Tanja Stone. Mean- while, the forward line was just as aggressive and scored a total of 15 goals. The offense consisted of: Bcrit Field. Jen Griffin, Heidi Kirn, Bronwyn Matthews, Eunice Pikuzinski, Cathy Rossignol. Nicole Tarnay, and Sam Welsh. And a very essential part of our team was our manager Rainy Orteca. The captains, Tanja and Cathy, and all the seniors on the team wish to thank the whole team for making it such an in- credible season, which wouldn’t have been possible without our coach, Mrs. Dohrmann. We also wish all the returning players the best of luck next year in '84. 99 Cross Country Row 1: J. Roberts, B. Ellis, Capt. L. Hudson, Capt. D. Jylkka, L. Landon, E. Tobin, M. Augustine. The 1983-84 Men’s Varsity Basketball team suffered from what Coach Dohrmann called “a car accident.” The team’s record was 6-15, but that is very deceiving. The team lost 5 games by a margin of 4 or less, which is very commendable. The team’s inexperience was what hurt the most, but the players attitudes were ones of champions. Everyone stuck together and support was always being yelled from the bench during each game. The team will miss Greg Marchildon, Sean O’Neil, and Steve Leason very much, but look forward to having Nate Duston, Jay Moore, and Jim Feeney returning. I was proud to be part of this year's team. Best of luck to Mr. Dohrmann and the team next season. Greg Marchildon Captain 1984 105 Nordic Ski Team 1984 was a strong year for the Men’s Nordic Ski Team. The varsity cross- country team finished 2nd in the Maine Prep’s with captain Karl Barth leading the way with a 6th place, and Jay Davis finished 8th. The two also finished 7th and 9th in the overall standings. Four year seniors Josh Smith and Scott Parks also turned in impressive finishes with an 11th and 15th places. The “B” team led by Tim Hodsdon, Derek Dresser, and Martin Grohman with a 1, 2, 3, sweep — annihilated all other competition easily winning the “B” team championships. Gould had its first biathalon team this year and swept away the Maine Biathalon championships with coach Seigel winning the senior division and Barth and Davis sweeping the Junior class one, too. Freshman Dresser finished strongly with a 6th place. The New Englands were plagued with health problems for Gould but both cross-country and jumping teams finished 7th against strong competition. Individually Werner Ide, 13th in jumping, and Barth, a 15th in the cross-country highlighted Gould. Reid Phillips and Thomas Korsdalen also jumped extremely well for the Huskies. Coach J. Wight. J. The 1984 Women’s LaCrosse Team was the best of the three years Gould has had a team. With a lot of enthusiasm and spirit, we finished the season with a 7-4 record. We played together as a team, and could not have done it without 100% effort from each team member. Very special thanks to Miss Mellett who did an awesome job of coaching. Good luck to future teams. Not many people realize how chaotic a girls dorm can be. Never a dull moment when a bat flies down the hall or pajama day or when the fire alarm sounds out at 5:30 AM, and when the showers go cold at 5:45 AM. Everyday is predictable. They begin with the rush for the hot shower, the usual screams of “what do I wear, do you have anything for me to wear?” and the proctors racing from room to room saying “do your community service if you don’t want to stay in your room tonight! Finally, the dorm slowly empties as the girls go to Assembly, classes and athletic practices. When 8:45 rolls around the proctors are at it again with screams and pleas for silence. Everyone begins to study and everything is silent except for a few muffled giggles. Finally, at 9:30, the silence is broken with a stampede of girls longing to fool around outside. Although there were the occasional signs of homesickness, everyone this year had a good time living in Gehring, and next year is anxiously waited for. Maybe next year, Gehring’s snow sculpture will be organized or people will actually start doing their community service. I hope not, what fun would that be?!? 122 124 Twas the night after the last exam. When all through the dorm Not a teacher was stirring, not even a labrador. The memories were hung in the bath- rooms with a flair Marking that the class of '84 had been there. Some students were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of homework danced in their heads. And Debbie in her kerchief And Dick in his cap Had just settled down for a long summers nap. When out of the window there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. I opened my eyes, and flicked out an ash, away in a window Pinhead flew like a flash. The tennis court lights on the breast of the night watchman, gave a silence of midnight to objects above. When what to my wandering eyes should appear, but a lemon lab and six tiny puppies. With a tall young master so lively and quick. I knew in a moment it must be Dick. More rapid than eagles we talked thru the night, we whispered and shouted of the year gone by. There was Feeney, and Fiske, then McGuire and Newell, then Clark and Peeley, and Weekend Duty, too. To the top of the stairs they would all tend to call. Now Study Hall, Study Hall, Study Hall, all! As I scratched my head turned around, All the couples were sitting there in separate mound, all dressed in code from head to feet. Butch had a round face and a little round belly, that shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly. Leah spoke not a word but went straight to her work, and filled all the answers on tests with a smirk. We sprang to the busses as the year came to an end, and away we all flew. But I heard them exclaim as we drove out of sight: Good luck to all, and to all a good life! Buff Hooper 126 127 129 “To my classmates: goodbye and good luck! Remember the good times; represent Gould well. Be proud of what you are. In a world where there is constant threat of violence and war, don’t be afraid to show some love and caring for others. 1 think most of us here at Gould have learned how important a caring community can be. Perhaps the greatest contribution we could make to our society would be to somehow carry that sense of community away with us.” Valedictory Address Scott Parks Commencement 1984 130 lomorrow IT'S HERE!!
