The Foreign Exchange Program After spending the winter in France I would like to share my experience with the exchange program. Anyone able to study in another country should grab the chance. It is a very worthwhile experience. My family was Monsieur and Madame Tatin, and their three children. The only member of the family who spoke English was Louis - Jean who studied at Gould last year. Mr. Tatin was a veternarian in the farmming area in which I stayed. The town was Sancoins. There were 3500 inhabitants making it just larger than Bethel. While in Sancoins I attended the local “College Marguerite Audoux” which consisted of grades sixiem until troisieme (grades 7 - 10). My courses were French (15 hours), English (5 hours). History and Geography (5 hours), and Physical Education (3 hours). The school week went for Monday and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and until 11:30 Saturday. Normal days went from 8:30 until 12:30 and 1:30 until 4:30. Wednesday was a day - off because it was market day. The day when different businesses came to Sancoins to set up for the morning in the streets. The meeting places of young people were mostly in the bars (or cafes) but also at the Maison des Jeunes (which literally translated means House of the Younger people.). Activities were often soccer or rugby on a town organized team or ping pong, pool, and babyfoot. Driving is possible at 14 years with mopeds, and 18 with cars and motorcycles. Drinking is legal at 16 years. School and studying is much more important to European children because of the competition and the emphasis on the major exam the BAC. The major question on adaptability is what will probably determine whether you can keep an open mind when your host mother serves one of the truly excellent dishes of liver, stomachs, brains although they are not served regularly. They are very good and you must enter the meal with an open mind and try everything. But adaptability does not stop there. It goes on to include a European’s view of the Americans, their importance with social classes, and other things which we do not know from the United States. There is no better experience for a student to learn beyond the books. Every moment contains something new. Discouragement comes at First while you are still translating word for word and missing the conversation, whereas after about a month you start thinking in the language and then that language will seem as normal as English had seemed. Qualifications for the exchange program are as follows: There is an eight member faculty evaluation, who evaluate the students on the basis of character, stability, maturity, and good scholastic standing. This program with France has been in existence since 1972. 83 Left to Right Standing: Gigi Wheeler, Laura Hollingsworth, Kirk Blomquist, Schuyler Meyers, Rachelle Dionne, Miss Boyce (advisor), Shawn Carroll (editor), Seated: Stephanie Morang, Nancy Beane, Pegga Merrill, Debbie Moore, Lynn Huntley, Eileen Cole; Third row: Laura Helfrich, Susan Stuart, Lowell Kronowitz. The yearbook had an enthusiastic start with a staff of people who had an illusion for commitment. I am sorry to say that the few members who actually stuck to their commitment were burdened with the work that should have been spread out to our seemingly large staff. I wish to thank the hardest workers who were: Pegga Merrill, Eileen Cole, Lynn Huntley, Laura Helfrich, Susan Stuart, Lowell Kronowitz, and our advisor. Miss Boyce, without whom this yearbook would not have become a reality. 1 hope that our yearbook will give you a warm remembrance for years to come of the school year 1978 - 79 at Gould. Coaches Newell and Wellford took their charges through tough days of drills, fundamentals and running until the Varsity and Junior Varsity Squads were formed September 13th. Mr. Newell’s Varsity Squad compiled a record of 9 - 5 - 2 good for a fourth place Seed in Western Class “C” Play. Unfortunately Gould ran into a fired - up George’s Valley Squad and lost 1 - 0 in the Quarter finals. It was a good year for the Gould eleven. Bernie Ritter led the team in scoring with 26 goals and 8 assists. Of the 24 men on the Varsity, twelve will not be returning due to graduation. They are P.D. Ash, Peter Chandler, Luis La Marche (co - captain), Bob Luce, Tom Ogg, Tom Pakulski, Bernie Ritter, Phil Smith (co - captain), Paul Stevens, Scott Stone, Bill White and Tyler Winter. Those returning players are Greg Banker, Mike Brody, Glenn Flinn, Jerome Howell, Chuck Hurd, Dave Morang, JC Pritchard, Phil Shore, Chris Teague, Ted Prime, and Jan Dyvi who was called up from the JV’s in the late season. Past Season awards were as follows. In the Coaches Poll’s: ’Western Class “C”: Peter Chandler ’All State Class “C”: Bernie Ritter In the team vote Phil Smith was elected most valuable player, Tyler Winter most improved player, Bernie Ritter Outstanding Offensive player and Peter Chandler Outstanding Offensive player. Dave Morang was named captain - elect for Soccer 1979. With what we have returning, the prospects for a solid team next year prevail. 92 Season Record Gould 0 , Fryburg 2 L Gould 1, St. Doms 0 W Gould 2, Buckfeild 2 T Gould 4, Oak - Grove 1 W Gould 2, Wiscasset 2 T Gould 4, Forest Hills 2 W Gould 3, Hebron 4 L Gould 3, Kents Hill 1 W Gould 4, Buckfeild 3 W Gould 7, Oak - Grove 3 W Gould 3, N.Y.A. 4 L Gould 3, Wiscasset 2 W Gould 1, Sacopee 3 W Gould 3, St. Doms 2 W Gould 3, Kents HillO W Gould 0, N.Y.A. 5 L Playoffs Gould 0, Georges V Final overall record 9 wins, 5 loses, 2 ties 1 IIm Left to Right Aea (i.Ty3lS liiti|J, Bes Worth, Lise Fa T? ijdTV ey w:. Whereas most of our opponents teams had 12 or more players we had only eight. Quality proved to make up for quantity, however, as we had a very successful season. Our height, speed and talent proved too much for all but one team in the league. Perhaps the biggest factor of our success was Miss Ray whose support and coaching excellence were invaluable to the team. Linda Patterson, our captain, and Debby Moore who have played together for three years provided speed and agility for the team. Wendy Hurd joined them last year contributing good hustle. Laura Hollingsworth, also in her second year with the team, added the needed height. This year we acquired Tracy Teator whose height, consistency, and shooting ability proved to be the needed factor to complete a strong starting five. Carla Martin also joined us this year who, though unfamiliar with the sport, was fast and learned quickly. Nuria Sanchez and Sherry Syence, also new this season, had spirit and showed real interest in the team. From the start of the season we knew that we needed alot of work both collectively and individually but with a little determination and confidence we also knew that we could make it to the tournaments. The beginning of the season was marked by games that, though won, were not always well played. Once we had worked out the kinks, however, we were a very strong team. This was reflected in our 15-4 record. The season was high lighted by excellent performances by each of the team members and by the team as a whole. The tournaments, of course, were the most exciting part of the season. All the skills we had learned were to be brought together in one game to be played in the Augusta Civic Center. There was a kind of electricity among us brought about by the fact that we were all doing something that we loved; playing a good competitive game of basketball. There is no question that the core of the team was the coach. This was Karen Ray’s first year as head coach but without even taking that into consideration she did a terrific job. She pressed upon us the importance of good sportsmanship combined with aggressive playing. Miss Ray always welcomed input from the team and sympathized with our athletic and academic problems. Under her guidance girls’ basketball at Gould will continue to grow. Our manager “Bozzy” kept the team and Miss Ray properly organized. She was also our most loyal fan. Bozzy always had a quick word of encouragement or advice as we went into a game. She untapped ankles, told us to iron our uniforms, kept Miss Ray’s nerves from fraying, and did a little coaching on the side. The season wouldn’t have been the same without her. There isn’t any easy way to sum up a season like this one or give credit to all who deserve it. We shared the fun and hard work, victories and disappointments, each others’ good days and bad. We left Gould the “Western Maine Runners Up Class D” trophy and took many memories of a very rich season. Laura Hollingsworth Linda Patterson 102 Left to Right Back: L. Schroeter, J. Beeler. Consequently, the team spent a lot of time working on fundamentals, which in the long run, seems to have paid off. This years team consisted of interscholastic and Eastern competitors. Competing in the Girls’ State Class A meet were- Pegga Merrill (79), Hanna Luce (80), Nancy Stowell (80), Marcy Osgood (80), Sarah Williams (81), Jennifer Bigelow (81), and Pam Senese (82). In the Boys’ State Class A meet were: P.D. Ash (79), Paul Stevens (79), Scott Stone (79), Bob Luce (79), Dave Morang (80), Ted Prime (81), and J.C. Pritchard (81). Those participating in Eastern competitions were- Pegga Merrill, Nancy Stowell, Hanna Luce, Jennifer Bigelow, Pam Senese, P.D. Ash, Paul Stevens, Brad Viergever, Bob Luce, Scott Stone, Dave Morang, J.C. Pritchard, and Scott Hurd. All skiied exceptionally well. Other members of the team were: Bonnie Finkelstein (79), Amy Eisenberg (80), Martha Hale (80), Natasha Gorby (82), Scott Carpenter (79) Doug Riebesehl (79), Greg Banker (80), and Jim Jabar (81). Gould’s Alpine Team reigned victoriously after participating in 4 regular interscholastic meets as well as in the Boys’ Class A Championships. Unfortunately our victories came to a halt during the M.A.I.S.A.D.S. held at Pleasant Mountain in which the boys finished second. Likewise, in the Girls’ Class A State Meet, the girls placed third. By team vote, Marcy Osgood received the Most Improved Skier Award, Pam Senese and Dave Morang getting the Most Outstanding Skier Award, and Paul Stevens receiving the Most Valuable Skier Award for his hard earned efforts while competing in events in the Class A States. Our special thanks to captains P.D. Ash and Pegga Merrill as well as to our devoted coaches Robert Harkins, Leslie Orton, and Bede Wellford. We would also like to express our gratitude to Eileen Cole without whose organization we never could have had our meets. 107 108 Spring Sports Gould’s first lacrosse team had an outstanding season, considering the fact that only one player had previous experience. The team showed enthusiasm, hard work and desire as they compiled a 3-4 record. After losing the first two games to Hebron and North Yarmouth Academy, the team picked up its first victory against the Hyde School JV. On the hottest day of the year, Gould defeated Kents Hill School. Greg Banker, the team captain, scored with four minutes to go in sudden-death overtime to cap an outstanding game. Gould traveled to Hyde and lost the second of a home and home series, but rebounded to beat Kents Hill on their home field. The final game against North Yarmouth was a heartbreaker, as Gould stayed tied or ahead through three periods, but lost at the very end of the game and had to accept a losing record. The lacrosse team was led by Most Valuable Player Greg Banker (12 goals). Most Improved Player Peter Brennan, and Top Defensive Player, goalie John Diamantopoulos. It was a great year. The J. V. Tennis team proved to be large in both numbers and enthusiasm. The team worked very hard and showed considerable improvement through the course of the season. Many players started the season with little or no tennis experience but managed to reach a fairly competent level and had a lot of fun in doing so. The team had matches against Kents Hill and Hebron and although did not win overall, had some very good results in individual matches. WRL JUNQi 156 158 Just A Note About the Yearbook x Shawn Carroll ’79 Editor I want to thank everyone who participated in the yearbook project. It’s nice to see people show up when a picture is being taken. I would especially like to thank my staff and our advisor Ms. Boyce, who spent many hours to make this book possible. I am sorry to say that as with groups whose participants did not show up for pictures the Herald’s staff as a whole did not show up much more than the first few meetings. I feel that our community really has lacked the “Commitment” which builds a community and our community’s pledge for community, concern, and commitment. In the future I believe that a contract shall be necessary so that the staff evenly divides the work load. As an idea in your minds of the work that the yearbook takes; I put in two or more hours a day on the yearbook this last year. This is a reason why it is necessary to have people doing the photography, layout, typing, and other tasks vital to a good yearbook. I wish future yearbook staffs good luck, and I hope that everyone enjoys this book for all its memories that it is worth. Charge To The Student Body Charge To The Gould Academy Community As members of the graduating class, we can no longer be an influence on the Gould community. Therefore, we charge you, the returning students, to use your opportunity to make this community a reality. We feel that lack of respect among the student body has been a problem at Gould: lack of respect for one another and for the faculty and administration. We challenge you to make this difference in the coming years. Without respect, there in no possibility of trust. Without trust, the freedom of the individual is severely limited. We know that with an increase in respect you will see an increase in trust. At Gould Academy there is a great diversity of students; and those who limit themselves to a small group of friends deprive themselves of the richness of experience that Gould has to offer. We encourage you to reach out to others and provide for them what they in turn can provide for you. The achievements of individuals in a community also become the achievements of the community as a whole. As more people become involved in more activities, the opportunities for such achievements increase. We urge you to take advantage of a variety of opportunities and enrich the community as well as yourselves. The achievements of an individual or a group depend on the support and encouragement of others. We ask you to support each other’s activities enthusiastically, so that each individual’s achievements can become the achievements of the entire community. As we have charged the returning students, we now charge the entire Gould Community. Encourage each other to create the kind of community that fulfills your expectations. Share in each other’s victories and defeats. Challenge each other to reach the goals we have set forth today. 160
