With two outstanding men leaving the Academy, the Senior Class has found that it is impossible to single out one individual for special recognition. After long consider- ation, the Class of 1977 has decided to dedicate its year- book to both Mr. Dolven and Mr. Grover. We thank them both for all they have done for us and the school, and wish them luck in future years. 2 3 FACULTY, ADMINISTRATION AND STAFF Stephen C. How He yearns for us to be recon- ciled to our Creator! Iam so glad He found me. I was lost in sin. I tried everything from LSD to meditation to fill that longing deep in my soul. The world couldn't satisfy my deep hunger to be with my God. Once I tried to kill myself, thinking no one cared. Oh, but I'm glad I found the One Who does care! Soons Of the three Fall varsity teams, the soccer team came closest to winning a state title, ending its season with an S.P.A. record of 11 wins and 1 loss, a total good enough to pit the Huskies in a quarter-final match against St. Dorn’s, who chose to forfeit the game to Gould. Gould defeated Valley of Bingham 7-0 in a semi-final play before moving on to play Richmond in the Western Maine Class C” final. Gould had lost to Richmond earlier in the season, and failed to win a hard-fought final match. For the season, the Huskies compiled an enviable 14-8 win-loss record. The backbone of the team consisted of a large number of experienced seniors. Felipe Rivera proved to be the team’s most valuable player by scoring 43 goals, more than half of the team’s total of 85 goals. Knut Weiffering was voted the best offensive player. Peter Soons was named most improved, and Greg d’Usseaux was elected best defensive player. Kelly This year’s cross country team had its ups and downs. We didn’t always run up to our potential but on the other hand, we had several good races with total team effort. The team was a mixture of ex- perienced runners and runners new to the sport. The new members improved quite a bit. Together with the experienced runners they helped the team to a winning season. The overall record was seven wins and four losses. The best race of the season was third place in the MAISADs. The main scorers were Harold Perkins, Gary Byrd, David Silsby, Fritz Lauenstein, and Gene Kelly, who won individual honors frequently. David Silsby was voted the rookie of the year. Keith Bartlett was voted most improved. Gene Kelly was voted most valuable. Pegga Merrill deserves special credit for cheering us on and manag- ing. Coach Vogt is looking forward to a better season next year with all the squad returning except senior Harold Perkins. Next year’s team will once again be captained by Gene Kelly. 75 Row 1: N. Disston, Coach Dolven With a record of 8 wins, 2 losses, and 3 ties, the team did a good job creating a reputation with other schools as “the team to beat. With the large number of players who came out this year, next year shows much promise for a good season. Senior Jenny Turner, the team’s Most Valuable Player (scoring 14 goals during the season), will be missed next year as will Brenda Smith, the team’s Best Defense who managed to come up with 6 goals despite her halfback position. Most Improved Libby West will be back as will a collection of experienced younger players. Thank you to Mrs. Dolven who will not be back next year to assist Mrs. Pooley. To Mrs. Pooley and next year’s team: Good luck and be sure to practice your air-raid drills. —Susan Vogt Captain, 1977 76 FIELD HOCKEY 77 CHEERLEADERS Clockwise From Top: N. Bosworth, K. Baxter, C. Take out of us the spirit that insists on doing things our way or not at all. Put in us that spirit of cooperation, tolerance and love. Let us not judge our brother nor con- demn him because he differs with us but instead set us at work to rid our own lives of ignorance and selfishness so that we may grow in understanding and appreciation of the truth that others have seen that we have missed. Oh God grant us the faith to believe that the words now spoken and the yearnings of the minds now open before thee are heard and understood by thee. We unite our petitions asking for thy blessing, guidance and help that we may faithfully do what is best for our fellow man and what is right in thy sight. Give us the will to work together for the betterment of mankind, give us the courage to withstand the pressures of the selfish, and grant us all the vision to see that sacrifice must be shared by all, to see that there is no substitute for hard work and no joy in unmerited reward. Oh God as another academic year draws to a close and we move on to other stages of life help us to see that goodness does not change. Cheating, stealing, coveting, killing the human spirit, worship of false gods, they are still wrong. Help us to learn to teach, speak, witness, act and insist that there is such a thing as moralI law, that there is an oughtness in our lives that is not just social convention. Help us to come to the under- standing that happiness is the result of service and suffering is caused by doing those things we ought not to have done. Eternal Father grant to us who are gathered here a moment of quiet, turn our thoughts to thee and open our hearts to thy spirit that we may have wisdom in our decisions, understanding in our thinking, and mercy in our judgments. Let us not think that when this prayer is said that our dependence on thee is over, do not allow us to forget thy counsels for the rest of the year. Rather let this be a moment of heart searching from which may come a new disposition toward life, a new disposition that will enable us to confront the challenges of the days ahead with new courage, deter- mination and dedication. May we now resolve, with thy aid, to be part of the answer to the world’s needs and not part of its problems. AMEN Prayer given by Richard J.
