During the time we have spent at Could, it has become more than evi- dent to us that Mr. Berry has taken a great interest in the student body. It is often difficult attempting to describe the kind of unsung hero Mr. Berry is. Yet the fact remains that his contributions have been bene- ficial to us throughout the level of education we have since completed. We would like to have the honor of dedicating our yearbook to him in hopes of showing our appreciation for his dedication to us. Thank you Mr. Berry The Class of '76 Dorothy A. Boyce B.A., M.S. This was to make it into the playoffs for the West- ern Maine Class C title. By the end of the season although our rec- ord was not that impressive (6-13-3) we had achieved our goal and by this fact the season was definitely a success. Because of the elimination of the football team from fall sports at Gould this year, soccer received an influx of players. Although most of them had never played soccer before, they came out with enthu- siasm and, thanks to the coaching of Mr. Newell, performed excep- tionally well. With only the returning Varsity players, this year was by anyone's standards, a building year. And yet, thanks to Coach Newell, we were able to make it to the playoffs in our division. With this kind of build- ing year I'm sure the team will do very well in the future. On behalf of all the '76 Varsity Soccer players, I wish them the best of luck. Back Row: Brian Murphy, William Anthony, Gerry Bannister, Alphonso Matias, Gary Byrd, Missy Arnson (manager). This year's season began with a few veterans, hut pre- dominantly rookies. The squad was small but willing to work. In the beginning of the season the team's inexperience was showing, however, improvement was shown at each successive meet. At the State MAISAD race the team placed a respectable fourth. Fritz Lauenstein, though only a sophomore, placed well for the team throughout the whole season which earned him the Most Valuable Runner Award. Between injuries, Brian Murphy ran well, and all year Mark Bryant was con- sistently scoring for the team and was awarded the Most Valuable Runner Trophy. The rookie of the year, Gary Byrd, will also be back on what looks to be a promising team for the future. Rick Brann Capt. In The Foreground: Terry Cunningham, Dave Ault. Not Pictured: Mr. Hurd, (Coach). For Mr. Hurd and his basketball team, it was another successful season. With only two returning lettermen, it looked like a rebuilding year. When the first practices started, many new faces showed up. We had a big man, senior Vernon Davis, and a sharp-shooting sopho- more, Dave Berry. It became evident that we had a much different team than before. Could the defending State champs do it again? The season went on with Coach Hurd periodically changing the starting five to find the right combination, which was not found until the end of the year. Vernon Davis led the team in both scoring and rebounding, with either Gary Byrd or Dave Berry coming up with a big game point when needed. Captain Terry Cunningham would always keep the team confident with a clutch basket, and co-Captain Dave Ault had the job of getting the ball to the offensive scorers. Everything was put together on February 28, 1976, when Gould's basketball team won its second consecutive State Championship. Al- though you would rarely see the subs out on the floor, they gave us our greatly needed support. Wayne Johnson, a senior letterman, came in with cool ball handling to boost the team. Rick Brann, who never really got to show his real talent, could competently replace anyone. Ricky Rodriquez was the quickest man out on the floor. He could come off the bench and spark both offense and defense when needed And Keith Bartlett looks like he has many good years ahead. Special thanks to Mr. Feeney for his expert driving and joke telling. Most of all, many thanks to Mr. Hurd who started the practices at two forty-five... or was it quarter to three... Cheers!! ANONOMOUS '76 GIRLS' BASKETBALL TEAM Left To Right: Amy Vogt, Barbara Roberts, Caren Jones, Missy Arn- son, Karen Moore, Mr. Berry (Coach). The Cirls's Basketball team did not have a good season this year. Their record at the season's end was three wins, nine losses. The var- sity team included; Karen 'Squeak' Moore captain, Barbara Roberts, Missy Arnson, Caren Jones, and Amy Vogt. Even though the team lost many games, there was always a sense of accomplishment for us after the game. We knew we had tried. Many comical incidents took place at our games such as Missy entering the boy's bathroom. The J.V. team was constantly supporting the Varsity and were always ready to enter a game. In turn, the Varsity's support for the J.V.'s helped them win their first game in years. Mr. Berry was a great Coach and supported the team throughout every game. It was always Mr. Berry who gave the team a Pep Talk telling them to try. Every game the team played was for him. The team wishes to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Berry for his help and patience this season. We all wish there was some way to show him our love and appreciation. Next year Missy and Barbara will not be with the team on the starting line-up, but the rest of the team will be back. Next year's season should be good but it will never erase the memories of the one already passed. Squeak Capt. '76 GIRL'S SKI TEAM Left to right: Barbie Hayward, Pegga Merrill, Niffy Ash, Mr. Barth (Coach), Sarah Shepley, Cyndie Ziegler, Sally Seeman, Joan Sommers. The Girls's Ski team had a very success- ful season. Unlike most years, both the x- country runners and the alpine skiers proved to be outstanding under pressure. We would never have won the state title without looking for guys, Cyndie Ziegler. Sorry I'm late Niffy Ash. Today I'm going to die. Barbie Hayward. Supper savior, Susie Vogt. Knee slapping Heidi Leavitt. Wait 'til the next race, Freya Morril. Cool and confident, Joan Sommers. I'd rather be with Jeff, Sarah Shepley. Hoover Sally Seeman. Special thanks to our Coach, Al Barth, for giving us the confidence and push we needed. We will never forget the exciting rides, as the checker dodged the white lines and passed trucks on corners. I think we were more psyched for the rides than the races. In all seriousness, we worked hard, be- ginning our four month season in Nov. The Canadian Air Force drills proved to be helpful. Many thanks to Mr. Van Ness, Mr. McGuire, Mr. Davis and Mr. Barth. the graduating seniors wish the best of luck to the next year's team. We are hop- ing to see the title captured for the second year in a row. Captain Sally Seeman '76 BOY'S SKI TEAM Front row: Tyler Winter, Darren Defoe, Bob Luce, Rainer Rothbacher, Kim Beal, Raymond Jackson. Front Row: Frey a Morril, Carolyn Cousins, Robin Hollister, Susan Vogt. 42 SPRING SPORTS 43 BASEBALL Under the suprevision of Coach Bear Berry, the 7976 Cubs of Gould Academy make up a strong, talented, and fun team. Cap- tains Barbara Boberts and Betsy Walker, Libby Hoy, Jenny Turner, Caren Jones, Karen Squeak Moore, Missy Arnson, Tammie Lunt, Sally Seeman, Kako Mitsumoto, are backed up by a strong bench consisting of Susie Batchelder, Joan Torrey, Libby West, Keiko Nozaki, Junko Tsujimoto, Mary Ann Cousins, Rachelle Dionne, Doris Armstrong, Peaches Bush, Joyce Davis, and Niffy Ash. The year was alot of fun, all of us having our moments of glory and embarassing situations. With Bear coaching from the sidelines we hung in there and made all of our games worthwhile. Linda Calderon kept us all in the right batting order while Mina Nadi and Kim Beal never crossed our bats. Our luck wasn't too good, but our spirit held us together, mak- ing the '76 season an enjoyable one. co-captain, B.
