The Academy Herald Dedication Miss Swift’s involvement and enthusiasm at Gould will always be remembered. Students and faculty who have known her will find it dif- ficult to believe that she is no longer here, for she has become as much a part of Gould as we are sure that Gould has become a part of her. We thank Miss Swift for all she has done and wish her happiness in the years to come. 2 Stephen M. Anderson B.A. Ohio University Director of Development and Alumni Affairs Years at Gould: I Lucia L. Win Thibodeaux led the pack with several victories to his credit and received the Most Valuable Runner Award. He was follou'ed closely by Peter Ohlsen, Bill Ash, and Rick Chandler, which made up four of the top five. Buzz Bean was fifth and earned the Rookie of the Year Award for his staunch effort. Backing up these men were Diderik Cappelen, Rick Brann, Tom Ratsep, and Mark Bryant; who proved quite valuable when it came to displacing other teams’ runners. Dave Baldwin, as Most Improved Runner, showed true cross country spirit. The team loses only two seniors this year and should have the best season yet next fall under the watchful eye of Coach Vogt and Captain Win Thibodeaux. There is no saying that better fits out team than the saying, “It’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game that counts.” Our season was not a winning one as such, but our team did learn a lot about playing. We had a very small team consisting of one senior, three juniors, and the rest freshmen and sophomores. These boys played in a league and were not afraid to go against the best teams. There were times when a lot would have liked to quit but didn’t. There is something on the field which makes you stay out there whether you are hurt or losing. I felt we had a good team with a lot of comradeship and friend- ship which is found nowhere else but on a football field. The players were all young and learned a lot about the game. With only one player leaving, next year should be a great year. A special thanks to Coaches Feeney, Cousins, and Litchfield, and good luck to the team next year. — Scott Ramsbottom ’74 FOOTBALL RECORD Gould 6 Dirigo 12 Gould 7 BoysTrng. So hard we tried but, unfortunately, so little we lost by. This year was a little bit different: first of all because the team went on a long trip to the woods of Maine, and second be- cause for the first time we had no real tall man to dominate the rebounding or defense. Our first game was quite strange be- cause the players seemed so tall to us. We went out there and thought that they were going to kill us. But we little guys proved ourselves wrong because we out-trimmed them with ease. Leading us in our fast breaks were Gator and David J., and end- ing it was David Ault and Roland Cruz. One thing I will stress is that I don’t think we played one team that had more pride or inspiration than we had. This year we’ll be losing our Most Im- proved Player and one of our top reboun- ders in David J. Williams, and our leading scorer and assist man in Roland Cruz. However, with super people like Terry, Gator, and David Ault remaining, and with the help of Squeek and Ashley, we have a good chance of getting it together next year. — Roland Cruz ’74 86 Ice Hockey ON SHOULDERS: Nick Koumantzelis, Tim Madden. The team did extremely well considering the cir- cumstances — lack of ice time, experience, and person- nel. The highlight of the season was when we beat an excellent Hebron team by a score of 10-9 in overtime. This game showed what the players had to have for a successful season — a great deal of determination. There were three basic units that played. The first was highlighted by the play of Mark Mitchell, Dave Johnson, and Tim Madden. The second line was responsible for the bulk of the scoring with Rick Foyston and Nick Koumantzelis combining for fifty goals. The third line was made up of the first two put together — this was the power line. All in all it was completely a team effort that led to a very successful hockey season for Gould Academy. Be- cause the interest has grown rapidly here at school, next year should bring about an even better team and season for hockey. — Nick Koumantzelis '75 87 Boys’ Ski Team BACK ROW: Mr. McGuire (Coach), Dave Nichols, Bill Ash. In the Nordic events Ohlsen and Cappelen were the cross country standouts, while Chandler and Wiese proved to be the jumping power for Gould. The Alpine team probably had the most potential of any team in the state, but never quite pul it all together. Ash, Nichols, and Bean should be congratulated on their making the Maine Alpine Team. Although the team got a seventh in the State and fifth in the New Englands, we won the cross country in the State and got third in the New Englands’ cross country. The team finally put it all together at the MAISAD Championships with a solid Alpine effort and an overwhelming Nordic victory. Special thanks go to Mr. McGuire, Mr. Davis, Mr. Barth, and our faithful manager, Iris Revitz, who all took a lot of “it” from us. We practiced each day, improving more and more each day. The guys in Lacrosse love to scrimmage the girls. It gave them a chance to be rough. Malcolm Coates was the best player on the boys’ team. Although this year’s record was unimpressive, the team morale was the highest in recent years, which can be attributed to Coach Vogt’s constant encouragement and coaching. For the first time in Gould Academy’s history there was a female participant on a boys’ athletic team. Even though Linda did not win her races, her dedication was admired by all. In the MAISAD Championships, individual tal- ent was the name of the game. Win Thibodeaux scored the most points for Gould with a second in the two-mile and a third in the mile. Doug Muller scored a third in the high jump, and Nat Rogers got a fourth in the triple jump to round out Gould’s scoring. Based on the season’s performances, Terry Cun- ningham was voted Most Valuable Track Man and the year’s captain, and Mike Moore was the Most Improved Track Man.
