As we walk down the hall, we find Richardson and Soper planning another midnight excursion with Spud giving some assist- ance from the outside world. We hear a noise from downstairs only to find our two heavyweights, Jenkins and Repp, talking about the sad ending of “Gilligan's Island.” As we walk down the first floor hallway, Newton and Baldwin are engrossed in a heavy conversation about hockey. And as we walk further, we hear Cleve singing and Borland com- plaining about the racket because he has a “HEADACHE. We hear a little chatter in Drake’s room only to find that Bolton is giving him lessons on How to Succeed with the Women of Gehring.” Down the hall we find Winter and Comins talking about the latest happening on campus, with Hannaford putting in his two cents. Upstairs we find Williams, Renie, and Cunningham playing “B” ball against “Gator, Mendez, and Little Luis. It is difficult not to place importance on records and statistics. We were inter- cepted a lot and we fumbled a lot and so we lost a lot. Well, so it goes. But, in fact, the season was a great success; we had the best morale and camaraderie ever seen here. We had coaches who were people before coaches. Mr. Feeney, Mr. Cousins, and Mr. Litchfield had undying support; at times they might have felt like dying, and my thanks to them is great. Gould football is great, an experience mat should not be pass- ed up. The best of friends are made on the football field and here at Gould lasting friends are made. We played tough teams and our team stayed together through thick and thin. I would not give up my experiences at football for anything, and that is the highest praise I can give. Few will ever realize how much they owe to Mr. Feeney. Good luck to next year’s team and whip ’em good! —Matthew G. Stevens ’73 KNEELING: Bill Koptis. STANDING: Coach Newell, John Roberts, John McArdle, Joe Renie, Gary Keay. Tim Jewett. Mark Mitchell, Manfred Huebener, Henning Christensen, Gerti Veldmann, Liz Turner (Manager). The second season of official soccer at Gould got under way on Sep- tember 5. This was to be a rebuilding year with only six players return- ing. However with two weeks of practice and the fine coaching of Mr. Newell, the team was eager for competition. The first half of the season produced seven straight wins, high team spirit, and a lot of followers. The second half found the team physically beaten, winning only three of the remaining seven games. The highlights of the season came when the team handed defeats to Bridgton and St. Dorn’s, always strong teams. The overall record was 10-4 while the league record was a disappointing 4-3, which put the team in fourth place. Horndalsveen, Wiese, Veldman, Christensen, and Roberts led the offense with their efforts. The defense was supported by Scott Clough in goal, Altgelt’s big foot and McArdle. The weak point was at the halfback positions which steadily improved with the efforts of Renie, Jewett, Keay, Comins, and Bliss and good coaching. There really was no bench” because everyone played, which only demonstrates the depth of the team. For the first time in our short history of soccer, Gould was represented on the Maine State Prep School All Star Team: Peter Otto Horndalsveen and Peter Wiese on the line, Todd Comins at midfield, and John Altgelt, Henning Christensen, and Gary Keay receiving honorable mention. Next year again is a year for rebuilding with only seven players return- ing. A special thanks is in order for Coach Newell's time and dedication, student-coach Jang Jallow and the managers, Lisa Pakulski and Liz Turner. Boys Basketball This year’s basketball season was again very successful and under Coach Hurd's direction, we placed as Runners Up, Class D, in Western Maine. The tough team defense, which allowed the oppo- sition only 44 points per game was the force that enabled us to get as far as we did in the tournament. Our offense output depended mostly on the effec- tiveness of the defense. John Altgelt, Bill Hawk, Charles Ewing, and Charlie Ault led in rebounds with “Gator” Robinson and Roland Cruz going in for most of the layups. In the course of the season we had many different combinations of players. This was an attempt on Mr. Hurd’s part to find the winning combination and I must say that they all came through where we needed them. —Charlie Ault’73 Varsity 78 79 Cross Country KNEELING: Coach Vogt, Alex Pakulski. Once again the cross-country team had a fabulous season. They were undefeated as well as Maine State champs and New England Class C title holders. The team certainly proved themselves members of a Gould squad, and gave Mr. Vogt the cooperation needed to build a winning combination. Receiving awards for the team were Dan Baxter as Most Valuable Runner, Alex Pakulski as Rookie of the Year, and Doug Shaw, Most Improved Runner. Doug injured his knee during the first part of the season and could not run until two weeks before the New England Championships. In that race, though, he managed to pull up nine- teenth and fifth for the team—a great accomplishment. Charlie Ault, Dan Baxter, Rick Chandler, and Bill Ash made up the rest of the top five, with Dave Terrio and Alec DesRoches close behind. Hopefully the upcoming underclassmen will be able to help Rick Chandler as next year’s captain fill out a team that will once again make Coach Vogt proud. The 1972 girls' basketball season was considered a good year. There were only two losses all season (9-2), one against Fryeburg, when Matthews missed two free throws with five seconds left; and the other at home against Oxford Hills, when, after being down by 13 points, we made a great come-back only to lose again in the final seconds by two points. This year's team was faced with one major pro- blem: Very few teams we played were up to our potential. Poor Mr. Berry would have to tell us NOT to score. We averaged 44 points per game as a team while our opponents only averaged 21. The J.V. team after hard practices showed how to win while at M.C.I. They proved they could hold their own against anyone. They consistently had good teamwork with Teal, Patsy, Beverley, Janette, and Sally. The team loses four seniors, Sally Peacock, Bunnie Amevor, Best Defensive Player Lisa Reed, and Captain and Most Valuable Player Molly Matthews. But next year's team should be good with Linda Ault leading returning players. Also coming back will be Most Improved Player Patsy Flood, Janette Kemp, Beverley Forbes, Ellie Hitzrot, and “Earl the Pearl” Munroe. Last year everyone was a little skeptical about how our teams would fare this year with so many players gradu- ating and Mrs. Feeney out of action,” but needless to say all positions were filled with great ability. This was proved by the varsity and J.V. both doing great jobs, with a fair percentage of wins for each. The first of the season was slow while players, old and new, adjusted, but by the time positions were fixed, we were going strong. The varsity had only one game left to win with Kents Hill and they would have had the cham- pionship, but the game was sadly lost and so was the trophy. (Missing Dan Baxter, Captain) The 1973 Gould Academy ski team experienced another average year in the annals of school skiing. With five top lettermen back, with the addition of two Norweigian all-stars and a bunch of rookies, has-beens, and never-were’s, we embarked on a new season with our first meet at home against Edward Little. In the Giant Slalom Captain Baxter led the way with a win, with Wiese and Christensen rid- ing on his coattails. After beating E.L. by five in the Alpine, we went into the Nordic too confident and got beat out by E.L. by a point. Horndalsveen and Wiese did well in the Cross-Country and Wiese and Frog DesRoches took a third and a fourth in the Jump. After this close loss came the all- important Rumford Carnival, which is a warm-up for the State Meet. In the Alpine Gould showed that it was the top Alpine power by showing strength with the screaming “Crash” Christen- sen taking honors in both Giant Slalom and Slalom with Baxter right behind him second in the Slalom and third in the Giant Slalom. Horndalsveen and Wiese rallied us in the Cross-Country after a miserable performance in the Jumping. We fell short of Rumford by five because of the 20-point defeat in the Jump. After a defeat at Kennett’s hands, which we won’t talk about because of embarrassment, we came upon the important meet. We got off to a good start in the Prep School Championship (M.A.I.S.A.D.) where we easily handled all the prep school teams in the state. Wiese did well in all four events and earned himself a skimeister award. Baxter won the Giant Slalom and surprisingly ran well in the Cross- Country with a fifth. Nordic Frog” DesRoches took a second in the Jump and a third in the Cross-Country. “Shaky Legs Shaw came through with a third in the Jump, with Jenness, who took fourth, showing excellent im- provement. to top this, the man with all the if’s and but’s, Super Rookie David Nichols came through with solid performances in both Alpine events. We continued to do well in the State High School Championships although losing Christensen to Eastern competi- tion. Baxter continued to drive with a victory in the Giant Slalom (tied with Wiese), and a second in the Slalom. Wiese did very well with a tie with Bax in the Giant Slalom, a fifth in the Slalom, a third in the Cross-Country, a twelfth in the Jump and a skimeister award to top it off. Again Horndals- veen did well with the Cross-Country (fourth), along with “Frog” DesRoches, who also did well in the Cross-Country (sixth), and Jumping, thirteenth. Although we did well, because of Jumping we had to settle for a third behind Rumford and Edward Little. What followed at the New England’s can be termed a disaster in many respects. Captain Bax continued with §ood performances, a second in the lalom and a fourth in the Giant Slalom. Behind him came hooked tips, lots of if's and but’s; but either way our number two man in the Slalom, Tom Bailey, was thirty-fourth, and in the Giant Slalom Hayden Homes was twenty-sixth—not nearly good enough for a has-been, topnotch Alpine team. Our Cross-Country effort was poor with only Horndalsveen and Wiese in the top twenty. We won’t talk about the Jump. So we ended up seventh in the New England Class A competition, and as Chief talked about prospects for next year as we rode back in the Hog, one can only hope and wonder if Sam Bigelow can ever import some jumpers. —Captain Dan Baxter '73 88 Tennis FRONT ROW: Georgia Saviers, Abigail Flint. Well, we started out the season with about 14 people out for softball and by mid-May we were down to 7. We were never considered a “defensive team” yet neither were our opponents. Our record (8-2) was good and could only have been bettered if we could cut down on errors. When we settled down, we looked like a decent team. Linda spent most of the season leaping around the small lakes that were in the outfield. Bunnie became our play-any-position star as she never seemed to play any position too much—partly due to Renetta’s ending up as our base coach when she broke her finger. We had a strong catcher, Patsy, behind the plate. Most Improved Player Jane Treworgy, second baseman, proved that anyone who really has deter- mination can play. Lisa Reed, the Best Defensive Player, held down shortstop with the exception of pitching at Fryeburg. Captain Molly Matthews was the pitcher and Most Valuable Player. I would like to say that I don’t think we played a better game as a team than our last one at MCI. The final score was 32-31 but we all gave it everything we had and enjoyed playing. We learned this season that to win you have to play as a team. The team would like to thank Stephie Bailey and Sally Seemann for filling up the holes left on the team during those last few games. Also we would like to thank Mr. Berry for the wonderful coaching job he did. Good luck next year. —Captain Molly Matthews ’73 91 Track KNEELING: Coach Vogt, Richard Getz, Ben Campbell. David Ault, Rick Brann. STANDING: Bill Jenkins, Topper Sprague, Win Thibodeaux, David Baldwin, Mike Moore. Absent: Tim Jewett, Henning Christensen, Gerti Veldmann. The spring of '73 saw the rebirth of a track team at Gould. Through the recruiting and coaching work of Mr. Vogt, the team became an active part of the spring program. Although our numbers were small and our record unimpressive, the team revealed some individual talent. Win Thibodeaux, a newcomer to track, proved to be a valuable asset to the team. Win was a hard worker who ran from five to seven miles each day. He was rewarded for his work by placing second in the two-mile and third in the mile run at the MAISAD Championship. He will definitely be a runner to be reckoned with in the future. Henning Christensen placed third in the quarter mile in the MAISAD's. Tim Jewett scored the only first place for Gould by winning the half mile. Track has nothing but a bright future at Gould. All but Henning, Gerti, Richard Getz, and myself will be back next year along with, I hope, some new recruits. Next year will also see David Ault, Mike Moore, Ben Campbell returning to pick up where they left off. With these and others, Gould track is definitely back to stay. —Tim Jewett '73 92 93 94 Winter Carnival 95 97 101 102 103 104 105 SPONSORS Barnstone Osgood Company Bethel IGA Food Store Bethel Spa Restaurant Motel N.
