Hot Steel !!! On September 10, 1988 we prepared ourselves for the biggest event of the year-- Hot SteelH Students from neighboring colleges invaded the College Center and its fountain to enjoy the beat of calypso music provided by Orientation Committee. The night air was warm, the music captured many a soul and all had a good time. Hot Stee1-- Its gone beyond the limits of being a dance; now its clothing. Convocation This Year Convocation was filled with many honors for the campus. Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke gave the keynote speech and impressed on us the need to spread the worth of education and the merits of the RAISE program, which assists inner city youths. An honorary degree was given to Esther Peterson who was the director of the Wom- en's Bureau in the Department of Labor in 1961-64, and Special Assistant to the Presi- dent for Consumer Affairs from 1964-67. More importantly, Esther Peterson was an intergral part of the Bryn Mawr Summmer Program which gave factory girls of the thirties the opportunity to experience a col- lege education Many went on to become union leaders in their factories, thus raising working conditions and pay. The final honor went to our Deanis Scholars 0f the senior, junior and soth- Students enjoy the Convocation food served in the courtyard moe classes.
