Dr. Wolfgang Thormann Since 1979, Dr. Wolfgang Thormann has been Chair- man of the Department of Modern Languages. His en- thusiasm, energy and vivacious personality are the life- blood and moving forces behind the continued development of the Language Program at Coucher. His educational career began after he obtained his BA, M.A., and Phd. from Columbia University where he was Phi Beta Kappa. After coming to Goucher in 1957 as a visiting lecturer, he returned in 1960 as a full-time mem- ber of the faculty. Some of the recognitions of Dr. Thormann's talents include the award For Outstanding Contribution to Goucher 09780, and the award for Outstanding Teaching t1983l In 1980 the government of France honored Dr. Thormann for his academic achievements by presenting him with the Chevalier in the Order of the Academic Palms Dr. Thormann adds his in-depth knowledge and un- derstanding of the French culture to his everyday instruc- tion and allows his students to have a greater understand- ing of the world in which they live Part of his effort to increase language proficiency and cultural understanding is seen in his direction of the January trips to France and his effort in helping students with applications for study and employment abroad. Dr. Thormann gives much to Goucher and we can all be thankful. Opening 5

Dedica tion Dr. Marianne Githens For more than twenty years Dr. Marianne Cithens has been an inspiration to the entire Goucher community. Her individuality and insight into the women,s move- ment have provided a guideline and a level of expectation for her students. A leader among the Political Science field, the Gaucher faculty and the department, she has shaped and modeled an environment in which many young women can gain confidence and first hand experi- ence. The result of her expertise are self-esteemed and knowledgeable young people who can successfully face the challenges of the real world. Dre Githens came to Coucher in 1966 after receiving her BA. from Marymount College and her Phd. at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Some of her extensive accomplishments include President of the National Women's Caucus for Political Sciencet1980t and an appointment by Governor Hughes to the Balti- more City Judicial Selection Commission 09830. In addi- tion, the Goucher community honored her with the Award for Outstanding Teaching in 1986. Dr. Githens is a friend, educator and leader who in- spires the entire Goucher community to greater heights.

Convocation This Year Convocation was filled with many honors for the campus. Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke gave the keynote speech and impressed on us the need to spread the worth of education and the merits of the RAISE program, which assists inner city youths. An honorary degree was given to Esther Peterson who was the director of the Wom- en's Bureau in the Department of Labor in 1961-64, and Special Assistant to the Presi- dent for Consumer Affairs from 1964-67. More importantly, Esther Peterson was an intergral part of the Bryn Mawr Summmer Program which gave factory girls of the thirties the opportunity to experience a col- lege education Many went on to become union leaders in their factories, thus raising working conditions and pay. The final honor went to our Deanis Scholars 0f the senior, junior and soth- Students enjoy the Convocation food served in the courtyard moe classes.
