Her individuality and insight into the women,s move- ment have provided a guideline and a level of expectation for her students. A leader among the Political Science field, the Gaucher faculty and the department, she has shaped and modeled an environment in which many young women can gain confidence and first hand experi- ence. The result of her expertise are self-esteemed and knowledgeable young people who can successfully face the challenges of the real world. Dre Githens came to Coucher in 1966 after receiving her BA. from Marymount College and her Phd. at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Some of her extensive accomplishments include President of the National Women's Caucus for Political Sciencet1980t and an appointment by Governor Hughes to the Balti- more City Judicial Selection Commission 09830. In addi- tion, the Goucher community honored her with the Award for Outstanding Teaching in 1986. Dr. Githens is a friend, educator and leader who in- spires the entire Goucher community to greater heights. Dr. Wolfgang Thormann Since 1979, Dr. Wolfgang Thormann has been Chair- man of the Department of Modern Languages. His en- thusiasm, energy and vivacious personality are the life- blood and moving forces behind the continued development of the Language Program at Coucher. His educational career began after he obtained his BA, M.A., and Phd. from Columbia University where he was Phi Beta Kappa. After coming to Goucher in 1957 as a visiting lecturer, he returned in 1960 as a full-time mem- ber of the faculty. Some of the recognitions of Dr. Thormann's talents include the award For Outstanding Contribution to Goucher 09780, and the award for Outstanding Teaching t1983l In 1980 the government of France honored Dr. Thormann for his academic achievements by presenting him with the Chevalier in the Order of the Academic Palms Dr. Thormann adds his in-depth knowledge and un- derstanding of the French culture to his everyday instruc- tion and allows his students to have a greater understand- ing of the world in which they live Part of his effort to increase language proficiency and cultural understanding is seen in his direction of the January trips to France and his effort in helping students with applications for study and employment abroad. Dr. Thormann gives much to Goucher and we can all be thankful. Opening 5 Convocation This Year Convocation was filled with many honors for the campus. Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke gave the keynote speech and impressed on us the need to spread the worth of education and the merits of the RAISE program, which assists inner city youths. An honorary degree was given to Esther Peterson who was the director of the Wom- en's Bureau in the Department of Labor in 1961-64, and Special Assistant to the Presi- dent for Consumer Affairs from 1964-67. More importantly, Esther Peterson was an intergral part of the Bryn Mawr Summmer Program which gave factory girls of the thirties the opportunity to experience a col- lege education Many went on to become union leaders in their factories, thus raising working conditions and pay. The final honor went to our Deanis Scholars 0f the senior, junior and soth- Students enjoy the Convocation food served in the courtyard moe classes. Joe Morton and John Rose discuss the meaning of Convocation. Professor Kaplan, in her traditional gown, takes in the sights. Opening 6 Hot Steel !!! On September 10, 1988 we prepared ourselves for the biggest event of the year-- Hot SteelH Students from neighboring colleges invaded the College Center and its fountain to enjoy the beat of calypso music provided by Orientation Committee. The night air was warm, the music captured many a soul and all had a good time. Hot Stee1-- Its gone beyond the limits of being a dance; now its clothing. Sizzling in the heat of Hot Steel, the band jams on! Opening 7 Pearl Kaiser contemplates a return to the simpler times of Kindergarten. Nothing can stop Anne Synan , Leslie Ray and Pam Pagano from having a good time. Joanne Curtiss enjoys a rare Coucher snow day. We're Outta Here! Enger McCartney finishes the evenings activi- ties with a quick clean-up. 1989 has been a pivotal year, it marks the end of a decade and the final end of a tradition of an all wom- en's educational institution. We are the Centennial class, the last to have entered Goucher under the premise of an all female college, and we will be the final class to be composed of en- tirely female graduates. We are a more enlightened, less na- ive bunch than our predecessors. In an age of $16,000 a year college tuition fees, many students have already tast- ed the bitterness of reality. Many of us have felt pressured from the start to select a major that is not only meaningful, but marketable, and jug- gle 20 hours a week jobs with early morning Classes and late night study sessions. Although our class is often labeled as apathetic, such is not the case. Lack of senior attendance and involvement in on-campus activities is not a sign of apathy but of being heavily commit- ted to off-campus employment, in- ternships and other priorities. Changes here taught us that simply being adept in one area is not enough in today's world, we must be multi- faced. Our class has been sculpted into women who can perform a multi- tude of tasks and perform them well. We will go into the world and be suc- cessful in our efforts. Opening 9 Three down, One to go! Becca Scranton and Suzanne Guiry enjoy themselves at a spring tradition GIG llll 10 Opening This year is a special one for the Class of 1990. We've grown accus- tomed to our new role as l'upperclassi' and are now making some important decisions. Academically, this has been the year to seriuosly concentrate on our majors, start internships, and fin- ish our graduation requirements. The many new experiences we have shared together - getting elected to higher campus positions, turning twenty- one, and voting in our first presiden- tial election - have enabled us to grow both individually and as a group. As we, the Class of ,90 finish our Junior year, the realization that gradu- ation is now only twelve months away may seem both frightening and excit- ing. We have many decisions to make regarding our futures. The unity that has developed among us through our three years enables us to enter Senior year with much enthusiasm and opti- mism. Together, we will strive to car- ry out the tradition that Goucher has instilled in all of us - to live thougha fully, to work creatively, and to con- tribute significantly. - Suzanne Guiry Megan Hobbie gets ready to shoot another spectac- ular sunset off the Pearlstone tenace. So Bahk and a friend celebrate fall Convocation mmwOZOI'dOm Testing the limits of eartHs gravity are Tina RushJayin WaurikJanna Howley, Sue Galvin. Cassandra Michaud attempts to dodge the camera. Libby Johnson takes a rest with her brand new RAC football Christine Cugini and Carter Wright add Spirit and friendship to create fun at the Gutter Party. What's a Sophomore? Finally, the class of 1991 is no long- er at the bottom of the ladder? The sophomore class represents the new vitality and energy springing from the depth of Goucher's natural re- sources. Our unity, fun-loving atti- tudes and ability to cram and get things done when needed makes us totally unique. We still have two years of fun and hard work ahead but we shall shine. Kendall Zumbrum dreams of becoming a Soph- omore, Opening 13 . This 15 College This year's freshman class was once again a lively and active bunch of un- derclassmen. They came onto campus looking scared and confused. They quickly learned of the horror of Goucher bureaucracy at the Regis- trar's, began dreaming of care pack- ages that didn't include cookies but rather quarters for laundry machines, and created new meals from the items supplied by Marriott; those are just a few challenges. Opening 14 They have just started to face the impossible puzzle of P.E., distribution and major requirements which must all be completed in 4 years. The real shock came to many underclassmen when midterms hit and partying pri- orities had to be reevaluated in favor of studying. But the class has re- mained enthusiastic by participating in sports, the arts, Org., and many other campus activities; Chris Deknave wonders what these yearbook people are doing taking pictures. w Jennifer French models the fashion of a fall holiday Jennifer Sawyer and Kathy Vestovich are having a great time at Roctober Fest. Administration 27 $311115 Matthew Lalumia, Professor of Art History The Love of Art Matthew Lalumia's denial of tenure at the beginning of the year prompted protests by students. He's more than a good teacher, he's an excellent one. Another mentioned, It's a real shame. He commu- nicates his love of the art so it gets across to students, they share it and learn. One stu- dent summed up, I feel very sorry this has happened...our class wishes him the best of luck! Dri Laumials lively enthusi- asm for art was sparked as a freshman at Princeton. I took a Baroque course and I used to go to the art history Faculty 30 library. Well, I sat there and all these pretty girls would walk in. So I stayed. Thatls how I got hooked on art and it's the God's honest truth!! He laughs about the today's high priced art I just wish I had one of those artworks! Speaking wryly of the new and strange, trends in art, 99t7o of these new artists. will be forgotten and de- servedly so! He has a high opinion of his students, and knowingly he says warmly, Yes, I know they're shy but that shouldnlt let that that stop them from learning. - Sue Lai MARIANNE ALEXANDER Adj Prof Politics Pub Pol DEBORAH AUGER Asst Prof Politics Pub Pol ALI BAKSHAI Asst. Respected, Easygoing, Relaxed Dr. Lancaster, a professor of history since 1963, is respect- ed by students for his easy going and friendly manner. He is noted for his style of teaching which is sprinkled with interesting anecdotes from his experiences as a For- eign Service offical. One stu- dent said, I like when...he tells us about his adventur- es...that way I don't fall asleep. After earning his B.A., Lan- caster joined the Service, Hfor the travel; he quickly went from code clerk to Vice-Con- sul. As such, his duties in- cluded overseeing passport and visa validations, and once he represented the US. in an international court case. While traveling with the Ser- vice, Lancaster visited Iraq and Japan. In Iraq, he remem- bers a desert that unexpected- ly bloomed with flowers and then immediatedly lapsed back into its usual dry, barren state. It was a once a year occurrence and I got to see it. It was remarkable! The city of Baghdad, was dreadful because of the filth. Foreigners lived to get out to Beirut for the weekends and Baghdadis just lived to get out. Japan, however, remains his favorite, I loved it ther- e...it was clean! Faculty 37 Faculty takes a break. 38 Faculty Faculty 39 gin 1mg , . QIIII: I . .I. . 1! I..h....l. ..II-II.I.I..Q!.. RAls and HP'S are at their retreat, and all they do is watch TVl? The weekly House Council meetings allowed many housing ideas to be expressed at House Council. We started the year by helping the freshmen adjust to Goucher life. We change policies, so residents are safer and happiert In the fall we got a nice break at our retreat weekend at Rehoboth beach. Despite all the fun, we did accomplish many things, like helping out with Security, Alcohol, and AID's Awareness Weeks. Our meetings always in- cluded handouts and posters, and Phills lame jokes. We hope you enjoyed GIG I!!! All that balances out the thrill of room drawings tagainl, and deciding on male floors. Congratulations Seniors! Good Luck to you all. Now all thatIs left is to clean up the office, take down the TAB, security, and anxiety closet posters, and wait until May to see the final product. As you leaf through the pages we ask you remember a very limited tas usuall staff put together a book that contains a great number of the cam- pus population. We did the best we could, giving up Pearlstone parties, October Break, and endless nights waiting in vain for clubs, creating a book that remembers for you. Its been hard work but there have been fun times. The QI is a great neighbor. Just like us, Pearl and Mer- edith had awful deadlines and on those nights Ken's boom box would blast through Pearlstone. To you we say Spend a buck on your own memo board penl', At the beginning of the year I was a basket case. I knew little or nothing about yearbook design. I admit that. But two very dear individuals pulled me through. Ken Casper and Sue Gal- vin to you I owe much. You bore with my freaking sessions and my tinfre- quentlyll Faithl' tape with good hu- mor and patience. New posters or warnings around the office always lifted Spirits. Literally, I could never have done it without you. Sarah Schmidt, a freshman, was volunteered for secretary. She stuffed, wrote memos and receipts like a charm. Ingrid Casta designed the me novative tfor Coucherl layouts for the administration and faculty. Caen Cro- foot came to the wrong meeting and wound up heading up the house sec- tion, Chasing house repls with the clock ticking. Allison Cunningham and Susan Blumberg succeeded in selling out the ad section. A tremenr dous accomplishment! Suzanne Guiry and Laura Oldham, our Baconites, kept beautiful books and drew the wonderful dividers, respectively All in all a small and to boot strongy loyal The Humours 0f Donnybrook Fair staff! I appreciate the support and advice Dean ColliexeAdams gave in those dark early days when all seemed to collapse but was actually getting strong. I thank my dearest friends at the Blackstone, Leslie and Stacey. Had it not been for the two of you listening to my griping, bitching, complaining and delt with my anxiety attacks by offering Chinese food and nights away from the campus my sanity would have dissapated. To my parents I give this, a daughe ter who learned to deal and grow up in many ways. Mutti and Bob Illl always Pay Attention To Details. Papa and Janice can we go sailing.7 I need some peace and quiet. Yes, the part of the book that tells you all the strange statistics you woulant know what to do with, even in a trivia game. Here we go . .. This year's theme was basic, sim- ple and if you didn't get by now take a look at the cover. Yes, its the actual Donnybrook Fair of medieval days. Furthermore, we actually got 750 copies printed of this years edition. Thus we actually compensated for the larger student body before the book was done and printed. Amaz- ing, huh? To continue the stat's . . . The senior portraits and house pictures were taken by Varden Stu- dios in New York. The book size is 8 V2 by 11', and the paper is Glossy $f80 191. I have no idea what the last number means except the paper will be shiny and show off the color pages. The Parch- matte 303 endsheets were chosen by Sue Galvin, Ken Casper and I for two reasons: 1. We liked it 2. It fit in C OLLOPH ON with the theme of the olden days. The cover and title were done by Josten's in-house artist Rick. He did a fantastic job with both Jestors al- lowing us to do something Donny- brook had never seen before. The final cover is lithgraphed and con- tains High Glossy LT478 Hit To pro- tect the cover you might note the lamination done by Jostens for a nominal fee. Colors! All right, I thought I was done with the techy stuff . . . The spot gold used in the introduction and on two dividers was number 874. In addition, we had a total of 32 color pages that is also known as four multiples or two signatures. To conlude there are some changes unnoticeable within the book. We have changed publishers and are now with Jostens. Wasting no time we also got a new represen- tative during the middle of the year. Doug Dixon, for all we know, be- came a professional racquetball player and we welcomed David OIBrien. David and Janice Bigelowy our plant representative, have both been extremely patient with us as some interesting problems came up. We acquired a software package on which we wrote, edited and chopped copy supplied by a small variation of sources. We also deter- mined computers and their software are not indestructible or closed to sabotage by you know who? At minimal cost, Sue whipped the darkroom into shape in the face of ever threatening dangers within the anxiety closet. For the first time in many years the darkroom has been used for its designated purpose. Fi- nally, this 252 page book will cost less than the new Gym, less than our four year stint at Goucher, less than some Goucher students, ward- robes. The magic figures is about $23,000.
