Coucher had been a city college for many years after 1885 before the difficulties of old buildings and the lack of suiiicient space began to tell. No one suggests that the decision to move as soon as possible from the city campusrwas in any way prompted by the home-run hit from the Goucher soft-hall field which smashed through the window of a Maryland Avenue streetcar; nonetheless, the incident was a symbolic reminder of GoucherTs problem. The old campus had its wonderful memories, but the College was ready for the announcement which came from President Guth in 15 Departments of Physics and Mathematics Left to right: Dr. M. The cry of ti4-2-153 went up, as many students and alumnae pledged four hundred and twenty-one dollars each, an amount representing the number of acres of the new Towson grounds. The 7twenties and athirties saw growing enthusiasm as the entire College community worked toward the goal. The campus had been purchased in 1921, and in 1938 plans for its physical development began with an out- door celebration of the Collegeas fiftieth anniversary. The first campus tours, conducted that day, were managed by students who led Visitors through the

The Faculties For most of us, Coueher represents a loyalty of a life-time, hut an actual experience of only four years. Our contributions to her fulfillment may be varied and extensive, but, for the majority, can be personal and immediate only during our brief time here. The View of her development is, for us, a limited one, and it is easy to forget that there is another group which belongs in a sense much more to the fulfillment of the college than we. itThrough the years of moving and transition we were blessed with a talented, seasoned and stable faculty, and this more than anything else enabled the College to remain on an even keel;9 President Kraushaar has said. More than thirty members of the present faculty and administration were with Coucher for at least part of the crucial period which saw the change of campuses. They share recollections of the tribulations and successes which preceded the comfortable Towson life of todayis Gouchcr. New Coucheres nearest neighbor was Hutzlers7 predecessor, the Towson Inn, which looked down upon the present parkingr lot, then a wild greenery sheltering a small country chapel. Ed. departmental area gradually reduced from three gymnasiums to the area under one stairway. While science departments moved onto the gym floors, Phys. Ed., operating from its stairwell, eventually moved out to hold classes
