GOUC HER COLLEGE BALTIMORE, MARYLAND Coucher the 01d . . . is reaching her future. Most colleges founded equally long ago have been by now long settled in middle age, long used to dealing with such collegiate problems as repairing old buildings, keeping the ivy from covering windows, and watching the steps of the library being worn down by the years of scholars9 feet. In maturity of scholarship and academic achieve- ment, Coucher is as adult as any of her age; yet most of the problems she has faced during the last twenty years have been, really, those of the very young. 1958 is part of a strategic period in Couchervs life. The new program for the lower division curriculum appearing in September marks the climax of years of careful planning. With the opening of Gamble House this fall, Anna Heuhech Hall will have reached completion. The close of the year will see well on its way the major, seventy-fifth anniversary fund-raising campaign, which is setting its sights on the physical completion of the campus and new standards for salaries and scholarships. The change of campus indeed has permitted t0day9s Goucher both the academic security of a thoroughly estab- lished college and the Vital enthusiasm of a young one. The spirit of the past and the hopes for the future seem to sustain one another here. Standing between them, we, the Coucher of today, salute her past and her future, recognizing our own time as an era of . . . wthe new Fulfillment e ication DR. RHODA M. The Faculties For most of us, Coueher represents a loyalty of a life-time, hut an actual experience of only four years. Our contributions to her fulfillment may be varied and extensive, but, for the majority, can be personal and immediate only during our brief time here. The View of her development is, for us, a limited one, and it is easy to forget that there is another group which belongs in a sense much more to the fulfillment of the college than we. itThrough the years of moving and transition we were blessed with a talented, seasoned and stable faculty, and this more than anything else enabled the College to remain on an even keel;9 President Kraushaar has said. More than thirty members of the present faculty and administration were with Coucher for at least part of the crucial period which saw the change of campuses. They share recollections of the tribulations and successes which preceded the comfortable Towson life of todayis Gouchcr. Coucher had been a city college for many years after 1885 before the difficulties of old buildings and the lack of suiiicient space began to tell. No one suggests that the decision to move as soon as possible from the city campusrwas in any way prompted by the home-run hit from the Goucher soft-hall field which smashed through the window of a Maryland Avenue streetcar; nonetheless, the incident was a symbolic reminder of GoucherTs problem. The old campus had its wonderful memories, but the College was ready for the announcement which came from President Guth in 15 Departments of Physics and Mathematics Left to right: Dr. M. Torrey, Dr. S. Dieke, Dr. M. Humstrom, Dr. V. Barton, Dr. J. Lodge. Absent from the picture: Mr. B. Wilson, Mrs. V. Current. 1921. The cry of ti4-2-153 went up, as many students and alumnae pledged four hundred and twenty-one dollars each, an amount representing the number of acres of the new Towson grounds. The 7twenties and athirties saw growing enthusiasm as the entire College community worked toward the goal. The campus had been purchased in 1921, and in 1938 plans for its physical development began with an out- door celebration of the Collegeas fiftieth anniversary. The first campus tours, conducted that day, were managed by students who led Visitors through the Departments of Economics, Sociology, and Anthropology Left to right: Dr. E. Nurge, Dr. E. Pancoast, Dr. S. Sulker, Dr. F. Reuss. The Social Sciences fields from sign post to sign post, each of which announced the location-to-he of a college building. The campus adornments consisted of a small Athletic Association structure called 46The Shack and a stream named in honor of the annual. New Coucheres nearest neighbor was Hutzlers7 predecessor, the Towson Inn, which looked down upon the present parkingr lot, then a wild greenery sheltering a small country chapel. Meanwhile, city life was becoming more and more dimcult. Classroom area was being radically consolidated as chances to sell buildings arose. Department of Psychology X. Left to right: Dr. A. Moreover, termites were taking over old Katy Hooper. 64They had headquarters in the northeast corner of the building;7 recalls Mr. Lloyd with the light of battle in his eyes, aand moved on us from there,7 The loss of her Katy Hooper area was the first of several blows for Miss von Borries7 who found the Phys. Ed. departmental area gradually reduced from three gymnasiums to the area under one stairway. While science departments moved onto the gym floors, Phys. After all the bright hopes and anticipation, could the College actually both finance and survive such a move? At last, in much excitement, September of 1939 saw the order given for the commencement of building operations. That month World War II began. ttWe had every alibi in the world for giving it 1113,79 recalls Miss Spencer, utaxes, the war, everythinv. 17 Departments of Education and Child Development Left to right: Dr. H. There were many who wanted us to take the easy way, to stay in Baltimore and to become a strictly city college by giving up dormitory accommodations; but we went ahead.a7 The fall of a42 saw the opening of Mary Fisher Hall to dormitory residents, initiates 0f the life of commutation which was to prove the test of Coucher mettle for years to come. On that first class morning of September, 1942, one hundred and eighty Mary Fisher girls were given an official academic welcome by President Robertson and Mr. Winslow as they stepped from the streetcar at the corner of Twenty-third Street and St. Paul. Quickly nicknamed GWVuthering Heightsf Mary Fisher was soon the scene of academic as well as dormitory life, as professors conducted classes in the Recreation Room, commons rooms, and the trunk space under Hooper. In maintaining instruction on both campuses, many members of the faculty were called upon to make the round trip twice a day. By 1947, many classes were able to convene in an unfinished Van Meter, but the struggle with the 44wilderness continued, and lectures were delivered above the roar of the bulldozers laboring in the mud outside. That was the year the tornado struck, uprooting even some of the largest trees and relocating two-thirds of the roof of Baldwin House on top of Bacon. Somewhat earlier, Nature had shown her wit when lightning had struck the Dean,s offlce in old Coucher Hall just before the issuance of warnings and burned all the recordsJ The Humanities Department of English Seated, left to right: Dr. S. That year, too, ninety-seven people and a horde of field mice moved into Residence Hall No. 2. EUllhere were no tiles, finished plastering, or door latches7 and it rained through the walls, but we were happy,77 Miss von Berries remembers. 4lI gave all the students mousetraps for Christmas?9 Unlinished but functioning, c4Our Adobe Abode,9 had joined 6WVuthering Heights,7 011 the Towson Hill. That fall, nearly all classes but labs were meeting 0n the new campus; by 1953 even the last of the sciences had moved. ttWe were operating the department from barrels and packing boxes arranged in the halls, but we were here:, Miss Kelley recalls. That year, the second for the library and the flrst for the completed science building, llGreater Goueher had arrived and the last of the town holdings were released. Aye, down these walks right many a poet paced Mute, musing, held ecstatic in the thrall Of beauty age-enchaliced yet his heart Afiood with dream-creation never knew The joy of those gray masters who beheld, Long years before, their visions wrought in stone Rear first bright sun-tipped pinnacles to God. And we who stand upon this sunny hill Far-looking over wood-crowned Maryland, Shall be no idle dreamers: we shall feel The joy of seeing visions realized, The thrill of glimpsing through these mellowed oaks White spires of august learning, and shall say, iiWe are their builders; we have wrought them 30.,9 DR.
