DEDICATION IN her office on second floor of Goucher Hall, and in classrooms in the same building, we meet her as a sympathetic adviser and wise teacher, deeply versed not only in her own subject but in a wide variety of other subjects as well. In her apartment on St. Paul Street she is a charming hostess and an interesting conversationalist. At any time and in any place we think of her as a very dear friend. To Dr. Elizabeth Nitchie this volume of Donnybrook Fair is dedicated with the affection and gratitude of the Class of 1937.

LAST year, nineteen hundred and thirty-five, Goucher College celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its founding. In that year the thoughts of Goucher stu- dents and faculty were turned backward to that gallant beginning of an experi- ment in the higher education of American women. This year, nineteen hundred and thirty-six, our thoughts are centered, not on what Goucher was at its beginning, but on what it has become in the half- century of its existence. Many ideas have changed in that period: new theories, economic, political, and religious, have appeared. The place of woman in the world has changed: the sphere of our interests has broadened so that the ideal of womanhood is no longer to be merely a Cloistered ttIady, but a person of wide knowledge and honest understanding of events. Groucher has kept pace with these developing ideas of feminine life. The curriculum is now so inclusive as to offer training that ranks high even in those fields formerly thought to be the exclusive province of men. Through lectures, forum groups, clubs, and concerts the interests of a varied student body find out- let in the direction most congenial to each individual. And it is a picture of this new Goucher, the modern training ground of graciously bred women who will yet take an intelligent interest in affairs, that this Donnybrook Fair has tried to present.
