DONNYBROOK FAIR PUBLISHED BY THE CLASS OF NINETEEN THIRTY-SEVEN GOUCHER COLLEGE BALTIMORE ,, MARYLAND x, '3 1:7 A A J; Iqae A7 GOUCHER COLLEGE JUN 3L9 1936 LIBRARY 72644 Copyright, 1936 LUCILLE MCCORMICK Editor MARJORIE ROBINSON Business Manager DEDICATION FOREWORD VIEWS OF THE COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS PUBLICATIONS AROUND THE CLOCK ADVERTISEMENTS AND DIRECTORY DR. ELIZABETH NITCHIE DEDICATION IN her office on second floor of Goucher Hall, and in classrooms in the same building, we meet her as a sympathetic adviser and wise teacher, deeply versed not only in her own subject but in a wide variety of other subjects as well. In her apartment on St. Paul Street she is a charming hostess and an interesting conversationalist. At any time and in any place we think of her as a very dear friend. To Dr. Elizabeth Nitchie this volume of Donnybrook Fair is dedicated with the affection and gratitude of the Class of 1937. LAST year, nineteen hundred and thirty-five, Goucher College celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its founding. In that year the thoughts of Goucher stu- dents and faculty were turned backward to that gallant beginning of an experi- ment in the higher education of American women. This year, nineteen hundred and thirty-six, our thoughts are centered, not on what Goucher was at its beginning, but on what it has become in the half- century of its existence. Many ideas have changed in that period: new theories, economic, political, and religious, have appeared. The place of woman in the world has changed: the sphere of our interests has broadened so that the ideal of womanhood is no longer to be merely a Cloistered ttIady, but a person of wide knowledge and honest understanding of events. Groucher has kept pace with these developing ideas of feminine life. The curriculum is now so inclusive as to offer training that ranks high even in those fields formerly thought to be the exclusive province of men. Through lectures, forum groups, clubs, and concerts the interests of a varied student body find out- let in the direction most congenial to each individual. And it is a picture of this new Goucher, the modern training ground of graciously bred women who will yet take an intelligent interest in affairs, that this Donnybrook Fair has tried to present. AND FACULTY ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY THERE are professors and professors, but to Goucher students the word faculty means just one thing: the group of men and women whose offices are scattered over half a dozen Baltimore blocks, and whose interests cover halt the world. We meet them in classes, and sometimes shrink from an ill-timed question aimed at a regrettably vulnerable gap in our knowledge. We meet them outside of classes, and some of us tespecially our younger memberst are amazed at how human and unimposing they really are. It is surprising how at times we so nearly follow a college course to its logi- cal conclusion without discovering that Ph.D.'s are also people. Hidden some- where beneath the impressive array of degrees and honors and various brands of erudite learning we find individuals with the same idiosyncrasies as we our- selves exhibit. Behind the appropriate Hacademic dignity lies a delightful sense of humor that is anything but awe-inspiring. It is a sense of the friendliness existing between Goucher students and Goucher faculty, a friendliness engendered by a mutual readiness to meet on equal ground, that has inspired this tribute: they are our professors, yes. But they are also our friends, and very agreeable people. a 19 h PRESIDENT DAVID ALLAN ROBERTSON THE PRESIDENT IN a recent conversation with a friend from another college, a Goucher student mentioned the New Plan. nOh yes, replied her friend instantly, we understand at college that your President Robertson is doing remarkable work down there. What can one add to that significant statement? Goucher's New Plan is watched and discussed with interest and admiration; and outsiders recognize Dr. Robertson as its originator and leader. They realize, as do we ourselves, that a far-fiung and balanced intelligence is required to carry such an experiment to its successful conclusion. We liked the connotation of the phrase your President Robertson. For we consider Dr. Robertson our President in a real sense of the word. To us he is no mythical bureaucrat entrenched behind closed doors and impossible of ac- cess. An interview is easily secured; and even a short talk always serves to smooth out whatever troublesome snag is annoying us. The benefit of a vigorous mind and a ready interest is always at our disposal. In the Lighted House Dr. and Mrs. Robertson are hospitable hosts to the Cole lege community. There we come in contact with culture and gracious living. We meet with brilliant minds and conversation covering a wide range of topics. And we are happy to know that Dr. Robertson and the F irst Lady of the College are friends valued and appreciated by discriminating people outside Goucher as well as by Goucher students themselves. e 213s DEAN DOROTHY STIMSON ON the first floor of Goucher Hall, surrounded by a formidable array of secre- taries at crowded desks, the Dean holds sway. At times it requires courage to brave the outer office and sign for an appointment, but how unnecessary are preliminary qualms! Once in the inner sanctum, the most timorous Freshman is instantly at her ease, assured by her reception of a patient hearing and a temper- ate judgment. Nor does Dean Stimson always remain in her office. Her Chapel talks are Vignettes of shrewd common-sense; and her Monday night readings draw an audience of devoted listeners. At teas and receptions we meet and talk with her, try vainly to keep pace with her kaleidoscopic wit, and take leave of her with re- gret. Goucher students are proud to have a Dean who is also a delightful com- panion. tt 23 w THE STUDENT COUNSELOR MISS FRANCES R. CONNER Student Counselor and Head of Hunner House DO you want week-end permission? Do you need information on social rege ulations or advice on any problem of personal interest? If so, the Student Coun- selor's office is a safe haven in time of need. From Miss Conner, the arbiter of our extracurricular destinies, we are always certain of sound and friendly guid- ance on any question. Unassuming in manner, gentle of voice, she yet carries with her the assurance of authority, standing always ready to grant privileges When possible, and to soften refusals with a smile and word of quiet reason. x 24 h MISS MARY T. Much has been written to and about every Senior class, but the task of a 1936 Senior is self-evident: to leave college prepared by careful and intelligent training to take her place in a world more chaotic than it has been for many years. The integration courses, in Which this year's class are the pioneers, are designed to meet this need for systematic training. Nominally, they are prepara- tion for Senior Comprehensives; actually, they serve to coordinate the knowl- edge gathered in four years of college, and to provide a sound basis for whatever ' the Seniors may elect to do after graduation. Senior year is, comparatively speaking, a short period of time. In the space of eight months the class must enjoy to the full the fruits of their three previous years. As Seniors, they are the college leaders: club presidents, members of Phi Beta Kappa, and departmental honors students are chosen from their number. They are expected to be what younger students hope to be when they also are Seniors. It is useless to enumerate the various activities and events of Senior year at Goucher. Important as they are, they are climaxed by Commencement Week, when the class ends its college career With a final round of parties and gayety. On June second, in the impressive ceremonies at the Lyric, the Seniors receive their diplomas and become of official alumnae status. May their life as alumnae be as successful as their life in Goucher has been. tr 85 ii OFFICERS Dr. Elizabeth Nitchie Honorary Member Mary Kimball President Jessie Urich VicevPresident Anne Sturtevant Secretary Ruth Newman Treasurer Ellen Tickner Recorder of Points Jean Critchlow Sergeant-at-Arms Ann Faben Sergeant-at-Arms Junior Class History THIS year's Junior Class has enjoyed extremely the new dignity of its position and is now looking forward to its Senior year at college. The Junior Scholarship Fund has grown rapidly this year through the en- 86 thusiastic work of the class. Two White Elephant sales were held, both of which were successful. A luncheon was also given for the benefit of the fund. Mrs. Robertson gave a reception at her home for the Junior and Senior classes at which Mrs. Roosevelt was the guest of honor. Mrs. Robertson's cordial hospitality is always much appreciated and enjoyed by the students. The Junior Prom this year was opened to members of other classes, an innova- tion that added much to the success of the dance. It was one of the most pleasant social affairs of the season. All who attended enjoyed a delightful evening amid good music and charming surroundings. The Juniors felt that they were really upper Classmen when they were in- vited to be the guests of the F reshmen at boatride. As for their own duties as hostesses, they were enjoyed equally as much. It was a real pleasure for the Juniors to entertain the Seniors at Junior-Senior Ban- quet, one of Goucher's traditional spring festivities. Among the many events connected with graduation, Garden Party is one of the best loved. It is the priv- ilege of the Juniors to give this, too, for the Seniors, as a last token of their friend- ship for the class which they are soon to follow out of the protecting portals of Goucher College. tt 87 o OFFICERS Dr. Ralph Cleland Honorary Member Barbara Deemet President Lillian Benestad Vice-President Betty Miller Secretary Victoria Cavagnaro Treasurer Mary Russell Recorder of Points Martha Arnold Sergeant-at-Arms Judith Bushey Sergeantat-Arrns Sophomore Class History THIS year's Sophomore Class has the honor of being the first class to enter Goucher under the new plan and so is the first to be working entirely under this system. Many of the Juniors took the Sophomore examination last year, but the Class of. 1938 will have no choice in the matter and must take it en masse. How- x 88 h ever, since the examination has been given before, the class cannot consider it- self as being a guinea pig of the first degree. The Sophomore Dance, which is a recent innovation at Goucher, was an ex- tremely pleasant affair. The only hindrance to its being a complete success was the fact that too few members of the class availed themselves of this opportunity to enjoy a delightful evening. Through the fund established by Isabelle Kellogg Thomas a new series of lectures was established at Groucher College this year, and also an English con- test for Sophomores. The prize, which will be awarded for the first time at Com- mencement this year, will be the income from a sum of $7,500. It will be given to lithe Sophomore who shall rank best in English; particular attention to written and spoken English and knowledge of American literature to be determining factors of such prize, which is to be known as the Isabelle Kellogg Thomas Eng- lish Prize. Soon the Sophomores will be elevated to the lofty position of Upper Class men, and they are looking forward to being the guiding light of next year's Freshmen. They hope to continue the fine record they have achieved here at college during the last two years. a89yi OFFICERS Dr. Katharine Gallagher Honorary Member Nancy Tuvin President Ann Burgunder Vice-President Dorothy Lamberton Secretary Dorothy Pfaendler Treasurer Sally Waters Recorder of Points Betty Miles Sergeant-at-Arms Marjorie Stern Sergeant-at-Arms Freshman Class History THE members of this year's Freshman Class felt that to get acquainted with their classmates was one of the first and most pleasant means of adapting them- selves to their unfamiliar surroundings. Accordingly, on a Wednesday in Novem- ber the Freshmen of Gimle, F ensal and Vingolf were Hat home to the city Fresh- egOe men and to those living in other halls. The following week the city girls took their turn and entertained the hall Freshmen in the Recreation Room. Refreshments, being the spice of all parties, were served at both affairs. This mutual entertain- ing seems to have fostered a cooperative spirit in the Class and perhaps will come to be a F reshman institution. At Sing Song, on January 24, Dr. Gallagher was elected as honorary mem- ber of the class. In the song contest the Freshmen acquitted themselves well, being ably led by Mary Weber, although they did come out last. Their chairman for this event was Elizabeth Hunt. The Freshman class this year, although unusually large, has worked to- gether exceedingly well, supporting college activities with a great deal of spirit. Several of their members played in the Army-Navy hockey game. They came out in force to support the Thanksgiving Dinner and other annual festivities. It is to be hoped that this spirit will continue throughout their college career. Marjorie Stern was elected Freshman member of Student Organization and Dorothy Lamberton was Chosen to represent the class in G.C.C.A. This first year at Goucher has passed quickly and pleasantly and the class is looking forward to its next three years here, its members a little surprised to find themselves almost Sophomores. tt 91 ii ORGANIZATIONS Lipscomb, Ranck, Dulaney Henning, Matthews, Simon, Redfield, Longwell Spain, M. The Board meets every Thursday morning, at which time misdemeanors may be reported by the Hall Presidents. This Board is expected to support all student functions and activities, and to make known to the students all announcements from the Student Counselor's office. On it rests the responsi- bility for maintaining high standards of social and classroom behavior. It fre- quently sends delegates to conferences with students of other colleges, so that Goucher's regulations may be continually improved and modernized. Judicial Board, under the direction of the Vice-President of Students' Or- ganization, is composed of the President of Students' Organization ex officio, and the class representatives who are on the Executive Board. Judicial Board gov- erns all conduct, advises students, and imposes such penalties as seem expedient in various cases. a 93 a Heard, Raver, Cogan, Stauffer, Parrott, Cherry Sirkis, Matthews, Simon Tone THE Tone Committee, composed of ten members, is chosen from those girls in the Senior Class who best typify the Wish to uphold the social standing of Goucher in the city. The Committee tries to maintain a high standard of decorum and ap- pearance throughout the college, and to impress upon the students the necessity for cooperation in this respect. Tone tries, through posters, chapel talks and meetings throughout the year, to keep before the students what living in a city college requires in the nature of personal conduct. Goucher is known to Baltimore chiefly through the behavior of its students, and Tone is interested in maintaining that behavior as a credit to the college. e 94 h Athletic Association President ...................................... There are usually between thirty to thirty- five colleges represented. Last year the delegates met from June nineteenth to twenty-sixth. The conference includes talks on current events, discussions on religion, sociology, racial qualities, political affairs, philosophy and other subjects of in- tereSt to the students. When there are no meetings the delegates amuse themselves by swimming, hiking, mountain climbing, boating, and by playing the usual games. There are also special festivities such as the song contest, international night and athletic meets. This conference is of great benefit to the delegates, for through the contact with other students and dis- cussion with them they ob- tain a broader point of view and are able to draw to- gether facts from many sub- jects and see their interre- lation. Mr. Ender THE choir is a college institution, supported by the college, and is a valuable asset to many Goucher activities. It renders faithful service by singing in chapel every day. It also sings at college vespers, at Easter morning service, and at Baccalaureate. At the Christmas Carol service and the spring concert the choir combines with the glee club to present these very enjoyable programs. The choir also as- sists other college organizations, especially Masks and Faces, when music is needed. This year the chanting of the Choir behind the scenes at the perform- ance of 'tCradle Song added much to the general atmosphere of the play. The chapel was bedecked with Christmas trees and candles, forming an effective background for the black- gowned Glee Club. On January 18, the Club held a dance; one more addition to the social life of Goucher. The Glee Club took over the chapel program for one day this year, sup- planting the choir. Pauline Hobbs THIS year the college dramatic society, Masks and F aces, has been entirely un- der student direction for the first time. The experiment has worked well, for the organization has done some remarkable work in spite of financial difficulties. The performance of Cradle Song, given the evening of Thanksgiving Dinner, was chosen, cast, and directed by members of the student body, and the result was gratifying, for it was a delightful production. Another program was given during the spring term. The society is encouraging playriting by the students, and hopes soon to produce such a play. The May Day Pageant and Boatride Plays were sponsored this year by Masks and Faces. It is to be hoped that next year the dramatic society will carry on the fine work it has begun. The enthusiastic and wholeshearted support given by both faculty and students to Cradle Song is an encouraging sign of the in- creasing interest in dramatics. The backing of the whole college is needed if the work of the organization is to be carried on successfully. The experiment in student direction which has been carried on this year is an encouraging sign of the growth of popular interest in dramatics. Always in the past Masks and Faces has been guided by a faculty member or an especially appointed director. The fact that this year's student direction experiment has succeeded so well is significant: student interest has been aroused by an all- student project. Next year, with the experiment well launched, Masks and F aces hopes to be even more successful in its activities. s 101 s Montsie, Wood, Pratt, Pfaendler Bander, Paul, Lowe, Hanover, Zalewski Medford, Canady, Siems, Perlstin, Miles, Zallis Danker, Nye, Hennigson, White, Bowan Beutell, Whelan, Cox, Daley, Brooks Spanish Club President ............................................ It is the specific task of Panhellenic at this time to explain to all incoming students the internal organization and aims of Goucher fraternities. Among the activities of the Panhellenic Council the Scholarship F und, to aid Goucher students to continue their college course, is outstanding.
