For a time the society existed and was apparently respected by everyone, but within the last three years, dissatisfaction has been expressed, especially among the councils which make the elections and realize the futility of the selection of members on any such intangible basis. In 1928, at the recommendation of gtudent Council, there was an attempt to make the qualifications for membership similar to those used in awarding the Blazer. The use of ten specific points made more apparent than ever the difficulty of judging a girls spirit. A larger group could accomplish nothing, and a small group, such as Sigma Zeta Council is, must be, though not intentionally, unfair. Accordingly, the 1929 Council, after seriously considering the case, presented a recommendation to the Student Council. Such a society as Sigma Zeta could be justi- fied only if its services to the college over-balanced its apparent faults. There is no organization Within the group, nor is there need for any, for the work of such a body in college is now adequately accomplished by the Student Council, and such a group as alumnae would discourage others who might desire to become active in that work. Secondly, the society cannot justify itself on the ground that it serves as an incentive or as a reward for services given in college since its whole existence is embodied in the reading of a group of names in chapel. Even the members themselves have not considered their election Whole-heartedly as an honor as is shown by the fact that in 1928 not one member ordered a pin. Finally, there is no need for such a group. Ap- preciation and reward, as far as it can be made for these intangible qualities, is given in a large measure in awarding Class and other organization oHices throughout the ' four years of college life. In other colleges where honorary societies exist, there are either specific duties for such an organization in extracurricular activities or the group is a purely social one. Therefore, With the advice of the Student Council and Senior Class of 1929, the Council announces that such things as Sigma Zeta and Sigma Zeta Council no longer eXist. In the other preliminary game, the Seniors of 1928, who have since Hgone outf' ran away from the Juniors in a 15-8 Victory. The same grand old Seniorshy slid home with a 4-1 score in the championship battle with the Freshmen. In the opening game of the season, the 1932 team proved that youth was no obstacle, by wresting an 8-7 score from the unwilling hands of their sophomore rivals. The corresponding game between the upper-elassmen Was in contrast With a final reckoning, after rain checks had once been issued of 9-0 in the Seniorsl favor. In the championship game, 1932 first held its more experienced opponents of 1929 to a 1-1 tie, and then established its merit in the play-off which resulted in a favorable 5-2 score. In the classic of the year, an Army mule showed a Clean pair of heels to the Navy goat, Whose Whiskers droovped. A score of 4-2 in his favor would make any mule smile. To complete the season, a Chosen Varsity defeated a Faculty team, whose deficiency in form was bolstered up by wind-breakers, scarves, and fur-lined gloves. An 8-1 score merely added to the victories of the regulars and attested to the sportsman- ship of the gym department. Army E. KINGMAN, 731 . E. CONSIDINE, 29 . M. N. LEE, 229 . E. GATCHELL, 32 . M. ThOSe who play, however, are to be praised as true athletes. It is only the devotee Who Will keep training until the very end of the school year, in order to compete on a hard-packed court under a hot Baltimore sun. Let us here pay tribute to Hildegarde Wagner and Dorothy Cook, the champions of the Spring of 1928. 113 BASKETBALL RIANAGERS BASKETBALL Despite the fact that the Goucher athlete lacks opportunity to display her skill in inter-collegiatc games, excitement always runs high during basketball season. Inter-Class competition seems to offer much keen rivalry and interest for fans is evidenced by the sadly taxed balconies 0f Katy Gym on the night of any contest. We do not like to predict; such statements are often embarrassing especially when they will appear in print long after the final Whistle of the games. 011 the basis of last yearts exhibition, 1931 may again carry off the trophy. On the other hand, the two upper-class teams are quoted as holding several cards up their respective sleeves in the form of players. Then, too, those pugnacious youngsters who swept down the hockey held to a winning goal, may prove to be dangerous runners- up on the basketball court. The rotunda 0f Gaucher Hall was artistically decorated With palms, Wicker Chairs and flowers, to say nothing of the students and faculty who exhibited all their formal finery for the occasion. Each Fresh- man was esccrted down the receiving line by her Junior advisor to meet first, Ruth A11- drus, president of G. C. C. A.; Dr. Guth; hliriam Johnson, presidentgiof Students Or- ganization; NIiss Mason; Dean Stimson; Kliss Conner; and Helen Turnbull, presi- dent of Athletic Association. It is one of the rare occasions When we may mingle with our professors formally, and it is one of the few opportunities our professors have to observe us When we are not loaded with books or distracted by many Cares. The following week marked the less for- mal initiation of the Freshmen into college life. The Sophomores, of course, Were re- sponsible for the weeks activities, and each night they escorted the Freshmen t0 Kin- dergarten, the electoral pass word being KTl'atp, Freshman!H The Sophomores; are to be commended on their wisdom in abolish- ing the usual strenuous method of hazing, and the Freshmen, also, should be congrat- ulated for conforming With the spirit of the week, and for writing an excellent sister song Which was introduced at the hSister Service on Bennett lawn just after the an- nual address of Dr. Kirk at Friday Chapel. On that day, Which marked the end of In- itiation VVeek7 the Class of 1932 actually became a part of the Spirit of Goucher. A. A. Picnic The annual HA. A. Play Daym was postponed one week because of hostile e'ements, and it was not until Saturday afternoon, October 6th., that the college journeyed out to inspect the new campus for the first time this year. The country was beautiful in the early Fall, and everyone took advantage of the opportunity to wander around the campus, through the woods, down by the brook and, most important of all, in and out of the G. A. L. Shack, where every rttour of in- spection,, finally ended. The campus soon became transformed into a scene of violent activity, where there were numerous games of three-deep and an odd-even tug of war W215 in progress; but the action gradually diminished in favor of the cider and cakes which were being served around the shack, and after shouting lustily through several of the favorite songs, everyone boarded the busses With great reluctance and Carried the nSpirit of the Future Gouchery, back to Baltimore. Political Rally By way of disproving an often-heard criticism that the interests of college students are limited to the college campus, Gaucher recognized the existence of a presidential campaign by holding a mock political rally in Catherine Hooper Hall on the twenty-sixth of October. Moreover it was a successful rally, meaning that all present seemed imbued With the spirit of noisy enthusiasm without which the evening would have been boring or pitiable. The coming of the presidential candidates was so urdently heralded in advance by Weekly that the story goes that some rsaders, untouched by the modern spirit of disbelief, invited their friends to Goucher to hear Smith and Hoover speak, on the same evening, in Catherine Hooper Hall. The more politically-minded students and interested faculty members began filling the hall half an hour before time-consistent with the best traditions-, to be met by Wild-eyed and partisan cheer leaders and ushered, or yanked, to the rightll side of the hall. To the left were the Smithites, to the right, the Hoover stands, and great was the rivalry thereof. Graham MCNamee Uune Thomnsl first appeared on the platform to describe to his radio audience the magnificence of the occasion, and after a few minutes of song and cheers, with here and there a lonely student looking for the Norman Thomas seats, the candidates entered in all the glory of powdered hair, borrowed tuxedos, and the becoming modesty of men of affairs. The first speaker, the Socialist vice-presidential candidate tKathleen Reedetl moved the hall to long and continued applause by the Haming impetuosity of his attack on war; Norman Thomas tVir- ginia Carrl next took the Hoot and, in his urbane way, sought to allay the fears anyone might have of a Socialist president. And theneaftcr a short introduction by Mr. Raskoh which was, surprisingly enough, quite Raskobianeappeared the Happy Warrior, the Man of the People, the Brown Derby Himself tAlice Jimmyerl. His speech, began auspiciously by kissing a baby produced for the occasion, and ending in an argument with Dr. Straton who rose from the audience llto a point of godlinessfl was a masterpiece to which even Republicans offered admiration. The climax of the speech-making came With the address of Mr. Herbert Hoover tMargaret Lehmanl, who said his say in his usual dignihed 3nd poised manner. Beside the principals in the political drama, Mr. Curtis, Mr. Robinson, Mrs. Nellie Taylor Ross, and Mrs. VVillebrandt lent atmosphere to the occasion. An evening of orators, such an audience, such desk-pounding, such shouting for such senti- ments it has rarely been the privilege of anyone to see. Before its excitement, the conventions at Kansas City and Houston became mere village gatherings, and the campaign proper dwindled t0 pallid insignificance. Thanksgiving Dinner 3?. ; HANKSGIVING DINNER, one of the few times when faculty, alumnae, trustees, and students of the college are all together, was held this year on 77 November 24 in Catherine Hooper Hall. The basketball court, lined with shucks of corn stacks, yellow pumpkins and with balloons scattered here and there on the banister, was decorated almost beyond recognition and the long tables carried out the Thanksgiving spirit with centerpieces of fruit filled with pumpkins and with yellow candles. The chefs exerted all their power to prepare the feast, and there was abundant entertainment of all varieties. During the dinner there were occasional interruptions when the entire company burst into song, and a special number was written to Dr. Froelicher for the occasion. He received a tremendous ovation and was forced to yield to the petition Hstand up! before order could be restored in the Gym. HThe Gaucher Family was welcomed to the dinner by Virginia Jones, chairman of the occasion, and lVlrs. John Culver, president of the Baltimore Alumnae Association, broughtja few words of greeting to the college. She spoke of the responsibility of the Alumnae As- sociation and the importance of the students to it. The next speaker was Marjorie Bennett, president of the Senior Class, and her ex- cellent speech was on HGoucher College, a Social Community. She emphasized the fact that it is only through co-operation with our fellow Citizens that we can be useful to the College and that full eo-operation is necessary to make Gaucher, not an untidy mixture of separate stores, but Hone big, beautiful department storey Dr. Ella Lonn, the next speaker, spoke on UCmaftsmanship for Citizenship in Com- munity Life? She mentioned Abraham Lincoln as a fine example of a craftsman who had as his Htools,H the ability and courage to think for himself, the power of con- centration, and a great understanding of human nature. Dr. Lonn recognized the value of useful and limited extra-cirricular activities but emphasized the fact that the important thing in college life is scholarship. Keen minds and intelligent insight are important in order to acquire that quality which is so much needed in the world today wan understanding which shall reach from nation to nation. The last address was given by Dr. Guth, who was especially welcomed after his long absence, and he expressed the pleasure he felt in being present on such an im- portant occasion. The Hnal number on the program was the HCartoon History of Gouch- erf' which included many interest- ing slides and was accompanied by several songs, which were unusually apropos. In the pictures various not- ables were seen playing croquet in the maidenly garb 0f the 90s, and the last scene represented NIiss Editor having breakfast on a lounge in pa- jamasea hopeful symbol of what Goucher may some day be. This rollicking ballad with an ever diminishing first syllable, has become the Alma Mater of all holiday hunters, and there is no other refrain which summons quite as much enthusiasm during the days preceding a vacation. The Christmas Carol service was presented in the chapel on Sunday night, December 15, and the auditorium was decorated with evergreen and lighted candles. The program was divided into three parts. The first group consisted of the old traditional carols sung both by audience and choir. The second group was given by the combined Choir and Glee Club, and a m0 t delightful feature of the program was an old carol sung by a faculty choir with Dr. Mol ie Ray Carroll as soloist. At the Close of the service the Choiry Glee Club, Freshman chnir, faculty choir, and audience all joined in the triumphant HGloria in Excelsis D60.N The holiday season was ushered in with more than the customary enthusiasm, for who knew but What the New Year might bring a letter with a Baltimore postmark to tell us mournfully that the opening would be postponed because of the flu? The college was deserted on December 18 with that vague thought in everyonels mind, but no such postmark materialized, and on January 3 Goueher opened its doors to the new year and was immediately hlled with the dark thought that in less than three weeks the time for mid-years would be at hand. During the whole period of exams, from January 21 until February I, there was an almost universal exodus either toward home or toward the intimary and it was not until the new semester was we'l under way that the usual Hexam reactionH and the excitement over the Hu had completely subsided. fof m .. 2v t-i xa-u egg! Virginia Dillon was the admirable leader of the Sophomores and carried them to victory not only through effective directing, but also With an accurate knowledge of artistic technique. THOMAS Proms As we turn down the last lap of the school year, the obstacles in the race seem to be even more numerouseobstacles of a gay and ethereal sort Which go- to make up one's social life and activities. One outstand- ing obstacle is the Junior-Senior Banquet to be held on April 20th. It is greatly anticipated by the Faculty and by the Seniors Who say farewell socially t0 the Juniors, who act as hostesses. Amidst a Hurry of colorful decorations carrying out a central theme, one sees white-clad Freshmen nimbly serving the snugly set tables in the Catherine Hooper gym. This yearis banquet Will be under the guidance of Betty Fritz. VVith a weeks rest we catch our breath and start out afresh in the race. The following week-end is a riot of dancing. iWaXine Groth is in charge of the Senior Prom on April 26th, and Dorothy Lea is chairman of the Junior From to be held on the 27th. The most important fea- tures of this annual Class event are threefold: decorations, a good or- chestra, and NIEN. Some of the Freshmen and Sophomores are invited to serve refreshments and thus obtain a glimpse CA1: Hhow to behave in a ballroom. The following afternoon they serve as hostesses at a tea dance given in honor of the upper Classmen and their guests. When the hOdds reached their destination, the boat was immediately deserted in favor of the merry-gO-rounds and hot dog stands which characterize the small Coney Island on the Tolchestcr Beach. The Class of 1931, in Charge of Virginia Dillon, presented Sir James Barrie!s Pantloon after admirable coaching by Beatrice Berger, and the afternoon was, to say the least, a thramatic successf, Meanwhile, the uEvens,, were pursuing their way farther down the bay to Fair- view, where the Class of 1930 celebrated the day With a presentation of Stewart Walkerhs play, Sir David Weary A Crown. Virginia Carr Was the chairman of dra- matics, and the production was largely responsible for the success of the day. ,mrr DON NYBROOK FAIR May Day ,m, M133 HE ANNUAL Goucher May Day, held at Towson campus lVIay 5, cw; EA 1928, was an innovation, as lVIay Days go. It was not the traditional, xiiua tamed occasion which one would expect it to be, but it was an informal, and most delightful frolic without a trace of dignity or austerity. NIay Day this year Was the Village fair of Donnybrook Town, after the fashion of village fairs in the 13th and 14th centuries, in the the reign of King John. The spectators were not segregated from the participants in the pageant. Everyone was a Villager from Donnybrook Town who had her individual part in the festivities. VVhen the merry-makers arrived at the gate they were given green paper hats to wear and green vpaper llpennies to be squandered on pop, ice cream, and for- tune-telling. Horse-baek riding, wading in the brook, and trampinigl in the woods occupied the time of the more energetic people, while the others seemed content just to sit and enjoy the spectacle going on around them. But they were not permitted to sit long, for the town crier tAlice Mayl passed along announcing in a lusty voice that a pageant was to take place, and the May Queen, fairest 0f the fair, was to be chosen. When the spectators were all assembled on the hillside, a little elf dressed in green tChristine Klesiusl summoned the little people who were to help decide which Was the loveliest, and another elf tVirginia Jonesl called the townsfolk together. The problem of choosing the queen was a difficult one for there were many lovely ladies among the villagers: Narcissa Penick, Helen Tottle, Margaret Turner, Nlargaret Oliver, Virginia Fox, Audrey Noonan, Edith Mielville, and Dorothy Russell. When a decision was finally reached, the one whom they had chosen was not present. They called her, and over the hills she came, escorted by her swain, June Thomas, to be crowned Queen of the May, Fairest of the FairaMargaret Sumner. She was eeremoniously crowned by the IWayor 0f Donnybrook Town tEliza- beth Schambergl, Who led her to a platform where she sat in state, surrounded by her admir- ing attendants and watched the lMay-pole dance of the villagers. Then the Queen led the whole company, including the specta- tors, into the woods, Where they all enjoyed games and a most delightful supper. Senior Week The last seven days before Commencement are probably the most memorable of all the year to the Hgrand old Seniors? and the class of 1928 carried out the traditions with true Senior spirit last year. The first night of Step Singing Was Tuesday, lWay 29; and following a long established precedent, the girls, dressed in white, marched out of Gaucher Hall to sing their songs on the steps before the building. The following night their dresses were in pastel shades and made an effective picture in the soft light of the fading day. After Step Singing on Wednesday night, everyone gathered in Fensal Court to Witness the Freshman Lantern Chain and Senior Funeral Pyre. The Freshmen, carrying green and yellow lanterns, went through a series of drillsy formed the initials of their honorary member, Dr. Curtis, the numerals of 1928 and 1930, and finally formed an artistic reproduction of Alladids Lamp. During the course of the procession, they Sang the praises of their honorary member and their sister Class. The most spectacular event of the evening was the ceremony of the Funeral Pyre when the Seniors marched in a solemn procession, carrying all the things which were doomed to destruction after four long years of a tedious and servile existence. Text books, note books and papers were speedily consigned to cremation, and one lone alarm clock was hurled with vengeance into the flames, ringing viciously for the last time in its career. On the evening of Friday, June I, the Seniors gathered for their last Step Singing and the Sophomores, dressed in White, were lined on either side of the approach to Gaucher Hall holding huge chains of daisies. The Seniors passed down the lane of daisies two by two and took their places on the steps singing: Forward, forward girl: of 2:? Marching proudly, heads lzeld lziglz? Thus does Shaw prepare the way for Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra, suffused by the very magic of passion, yet still preparing the Shawian character, Enc-liarbus, who is never taken in by Cleopatrals wiles. l1 Surely an enjoyable evening, that eighth of RIarCh, the first night of the Seniors, revels. I had to be reminded by my companion, as the flnal scene began, that it was on the edge of midnight. Shaw and the Seniors had made me a disciple of Einstein in my indifference to ordinary methods of reckoning time and space. The production was an even one, unmarred by rough spots, and clearly showed faithful rehearsal plus more. than ordinary talent on the part of several actresses. I shall begin by praising Evelyn Bryan, who made young Ptolemy a charming figure, petulant, timidnand human. He was a fine foil to Cleopatra, whom Dorothy De Berry portrayed in the right vein, the enchantress not yet mature but already devastating. lVIiss De Berry did not over-emotionalize the role; that would have been fatal to Shaw,s intention. She gave us the mixture of archness and calculation which is the soul of the character. She looked the part, and she was amusing and moving by turns in her interpretation of it. June Thomas as Caesar was at her best, I think, in the last scene, where the greatness of Caesar is cunningly half-revealed, half-shrouded in mystery by Shaw, where pathos mingles with mockery and justice sternly rebukes malice. But she was always good. She had that air of self-possession, 0f amused de- tachment. of sympathy with beauty and youth which were appropriate to Caesarys bald crown and fifty years. He looks over the abyss, but does not, like NIark Anthony, take the fatal plunge. A Roman of the Romans, he returns to Romefwith a memory of that moonlight scene in the desert. In the end he will be found like Caesar, like himself! Miss Brooke as Fatatateeta was unmistakably impressive. She had the air! It was her great moment when she lay dead upon the stage, having been faithful to Cleo- patra t0 the last. The loneliness of that young Queen as she called tremblingly to one who could not answer was also one of the best moments of lwiss De Berryls acting. lVIiss Voorhees as Apo-llodorus likewise got my vote. That young man was really a remarkable fellow, with a soul above his occupation as shopkeeper. His humor was a bright spot in the evenings performance. And those fine, upstanding Roman soldiers. reE N N DO $1.. a what a stride and an air they had, a NIartian air imparted by NIL NIartYs coaching. One almost forgot that they were young women of a Senior class. The scenery-that was both elaborate and successful. A good deal of pains must have been expended on it. It undoubtedly helped to lend an atmosphere to several episodes. The costumes, too, were effective. Need I mention that 1V1iss Brinkleyk coaching resulted in a smooth, harmonious production? Things Inust hang together, if a play is to go. In the commonwealth of acting, each must play her part in subordina- tion to a total effect. This was evident as I listened to the unfolding of Shaw's subtle comedy. No one pre-empted the center of the stage too long. The result was genuine Shaw, and not a motley group of young women misinterpreting Shaw. The fine-I'iled phrases came forth Clearly at the right moment; and the sophistication that goes deeper below the surface than Oscar Wildes Shaw, the seemingly ferocious but really gentle satirist, was apparent throughout. Why is Bernard Shaw so attractive to young women who wish to produce a play? He has very little cheap, vulgar smartness-which appears so often in many nogplists Who attempt to interpret the modern spirit. But he is remarkably Witty, he has a Hair for style, he gently pushes over Victorian pedestals. Under his mockery there is always some depth of thought, some memorable analysis of what passes for civilization. His Caesar, as Bliss Thomas showed, has as much tolerance as intolerance. His Cleopatra in her Hsalad days? when she is green in judgment, is almost as Vital as Juliet. Never romantic too long, she nevertheless mingles deftly the siren and the humorist. Miss De Berry brought this out well. I find that I have not yet mentioned Rufio. TVIiss Bennett made this part one of the evenings distinguished impersonations. She was masculine to the eyebrows and, more important, above them. She reminded me of Kipling,s remark: HThe liner shes a lady, an, . . . the IVIan-O-VVafs yer husband. The liner was Cleopatra, and Miss Bennett, though not a husband, provided an excellent contrast. She was certainly a man of war! She had the right swagger and voice, the not-too-much of Shaw and Shakespeare. The play with Rufio left out would have made a Hgreat gap in nature. NIany minor parts showed highly intelligent acting. The evenings pleasure was a symphony of trained voices. I thought, at the end, of ShaWTs conception of Cleopatra, young, frail, sly, indomitable, treacherous even in her first youth, a sensitive plant which closes with deadly effect on the Victim, not Julius Caesar, who enters. Shaw never showed his subtlety more than in this play. It is not a satire on Shakespeareis rlnthony and Cleopatra; it is a glittering pendant to the Shakespearean necklace. Shaw, had he written in verse, might have written Shakespeare's comment: I drmmcd tlmrr was an Emperor. 0, sutlz anatlzrrr Jlmp, that I might see But xuclz anotlzer man! Does it matter whether the Emperofs name was Julius Caesar 0r IWark Anthony? Shaw and Shakespeare present to us a man who is of royal stature, a woman whose . a . . . . ,, bright eyes ram mHuence and Judge the prize. HARRY T. BAKER The Cradle Song By SIERRA UNIOR PLAY! An air of expectancy, the hall aglow with light and young life, a festive scene. Receptive all, to the touch of humor and pathos, tears The Cradle Song! How fitting a theme for the Christmas season When the world glorifies the lVIother and her Babe. The scene: behind convent walls. But there is no gloomy for here, too, the sun shines, human hearts beat, and the imagination and emotion of the nuns plays fondly upon the eternal theme of motherhood. A vicarious motherhood, indeed. A tiny baby-girl is shoved into the home of the Brides of Heaven, of the nuns of the Convent of St. Francis. For eighteen years tender care, Eloving solicitude, anxieties, hopes and Wishes hover over the young life until the wings unfold and carry the precious trust of Heaven back into the great world of life and love, joy and sorrow. When the play begins, and the nuns lift their veils, our hearts go out to them; they are so young, so full of life and longings, so fresh and pretty. When the curtain rises on the last scene, their natures have not changed but the bloom of youth has fled and the color faded. With the departure of their beloved treasure the nuns are left to resignation more stern and to a sense of desolation. A charming and touching offering to the guests of the evening, the Freshmen. The setting, the costumes, the light upon the scene, all created a favorable anticipation. And as the scenes unfold the simple story in an easily flowing dialogue and action the audience followed With tense attention, moved to laughter by the severely devout Vicaress, to respect by the dignified, wise and broadly human Prioress, t0 sympathy for the Winsome and wistfully tender Sister Joanna of the Cross who, if she were a bird, would fly to Bethlehem to be Where the Virgin lived With the Child, and Who is homesick for the baby brother. Sister Inez, domestic and warm-hearted, quite won our hearts; mischevious Marcella found strong partisans; we enjoyed the blunt, jolly but very sensible and safe doctor and the trusty Sister Tornera. Each Character stood out individually and clearly. Theresa, the foundling, played her part, a dimcult part, with unaffected simplicity and sincerity, seconded by her ardent lover, the manly young Antonio. The play, though a difhcult one to present, Was charming, dignified and impressive. HANS FROELICHER. Agora igN THE NIIDST of our collegiate life here at Goucher, there is a group gays more or less vitally interested in things theatrical, a group which is trying to 56,ng relieve academic tension by the production of several worth-while plays dur- ing the course of the year. Agora is hampered by the difliculties of small periods al- lowed for rehearsal, comparatively small funds, and the inability to get on the Katy stage until two hours before the final performance. Nevertheless, the enthusiasm of the group has in a great measure offset these diHiculties; and with the aid of willing co-operation from committees and actors, Agora has staged productions which com- pare favorably with those of amateurs who labor under more favorable circumstances. During registration week, Agora welcomed the freshmen with Booth Tarkingtonls HBimbo, the Pirate, a refreshing comedy guaranteed to drive away all signs of home- sickness. At the second performance, we found that lVIr. Shaw could be not only entertaining but farcical, as evidenced by the highly amusing llPrologue to Androcles and the Lionll; and We saw the first three-act play which Agora has produced in many years-Lord Dunsanyls HThe Gods of the lVIountain. Just before Christmas came another evening of plays; the society farce, All Gummed Up;y and an impressive ex- ample of Maeterlinekls symbolism, The Intruder, followed by a highly original Christmas pantomime. In the middle of March, Agora gave perhaps its best evening of entertainment. Gilbert's llCreatures of Impulse, Barrie's uThe Twelve Pound Look and HThe Kiss in Tenadu, a pantomime taken from llThe Beggar on Horse- back, combined to make a varied program of unusual interest. Taken as a whole, we feel that it has been a particularly good year, that the dra- matic association has become an organization which deserves, and in a large measure receives the support of the college body in its entirety. If it has done nothing else, Agora has created several pictures which we shall never forgetathe seven beggars frozen into a semblance of the Seven Green Gods of the Mountain; two old ladies gossiping before a gay shop window; the magnificent Sergeant Klooque backing away from the threatening crutch of the Old Lady; the Sister of Charity announcing death to the waiting family,-all these are memories which will stay with us always. VIRGINIA COALE eat; ,lv . wk ii The Faculty Plays N FRIDAY, February 22nd, the climax of the dramatic season was reached ' with the presentation of two one-act plays by the Faculty, and the audience d I was larger and more hilarious than the Auditorium of Katy had seen in many days. It has not been determined by even the severest of the critics who were present, whether or not the first play, Herbertls Double Demom Was meant as a judicial satire on the Parliamentary abilities of the mere male or whether it was an application of the difficulties of married life to judicial procedure. It is sufficient to say that the scene was in Hthe Deliberating Room of the Jury, that the Foreman tMiss Richesl was the wife of the eleventh Juror and that the other ten Jurors were of the same sex and temperament as the Foreman. Therein broils the plot! The eleventh Juror tDr. Gotlingy, characterized as llpatient, shy and mild-manneredfy concentrated on his game of Double Demon, while the l'fairer members of the Jury deliberated. When they had decided that the prisoner was guilty and the Foreman was ready to report, her husband entered the discussion just long enough to disagrEe with the decision, and calmly returned to his game of cards. The Jurors were exasperated! Number four argued with him; number eight argued with him; number one argued with him and the Foreman herself argued with him. Number seven tMiss Von Bor- riesy controlled her desire for a cigarette and retired behind College Humor,H but number six thIiss McGinnisy would not be discouraged and went on with her knit- ting. Finally when number four tlkliss Craney developed hysterics, number two tMiss Marjorie Wallace, as young as a juror could be and as beautiful as possiblel took it upon herself to argue or rather to convince toh, so gentlyl the eleventh Juror that the prisoner was certainly guilty. When she finally succeeded, the Jurors rose with a glad cry to return to court, but the Foreman, aghast at the sudden amiability of her husband, set about to convince the Jurors that he must be wrong and the pris- oner most certainly was NOT guilty. The disadvantage in carrying domestic dif- ficulties into the court room was apparent and by the time the Jurors reached a unani- mous decision of HNot Guilty the court attendant entered to report that the prisoner had just confessed his guilt. At the climax the dignity of the audience vanished for the evening, and the faculty took their places among the successful dramatic artists of the season. In the second play, Shaw's Passion, Poison and Petrifaction, no part of the title was neglected, but Was admirably personified by the heroine, Miss Dorothy Wallace, who loved poor Adolphus, Dr. Lloyd; also by the husband, Dr. Curtis, who fed poison to poor Adolphus; and by poor Adolphus him elf, who drank lime as an antidote, never thinking that it would set and transform him into a living statue. There is a remark- able opportunity for mental relaxation in the sight of the fields of History and Chem- istry rolling together on the floor, or the field of Biblical literature directing traHic. or that of Political Science administering Medical advice, and it is our greatest hope that Faculty Dramaties will become an annual occasion, to be anticipated throughout the year.
