Working from the angle that more pictures and less copy make a better year book, photo- grapher Patsy Johnson shouldered the shutter snap- ping burden. Svenskarnes Ars Bok finances had a rough year. A magazine selling contest was sponsored by the staff, but only a small amount of cash was netted for the annual. More successful financi- ally, however, was the box supper and dance pro- moted by Marilyn Christensen, business manager. These ventures coupled with the long hours of so- liciting by Ramona DeFruiter, advertising manager, saved the staff from financial embarrassment, and made possible the publication of this year's annual. Disconnected features and names of seniors presented a problem to Janet Quinn and Lorraine N i 1 I h . J .51 STAFF Curtis Names and faces of the juniors were joined by Marilyn Stevens and Ema Jayne Norsworthy. The seniors cf 1953 were sotted and filed by Phyl- lis Aden and Marjorie Franzen. 1954 wheels to lie were identified by Arlene Block and Jerry Nansel. Margie Peterson and Duane Pramberg eas- ily l-andled their job as junior high editors. Marilyn Kratzenstein did a bang up iob in her capacity as circulation manager. Marcia Zorn demonstrated her artistic talents by designing the cover for the annual. Easily recognized by their grey hair and haggard looks as deadlines drew near were activ- ities editors, Janet Schriver and Elaine Broadbent, and sports editors, Norman Mann and Jearold Nick- erson. Completed and published it is your 1951 Sven- skarnes Ars Bok, but several months ago it was only folders crammed full of pictures and papers. The group was sponsored by Mr. Charles E. Farnham. i . ,In FN SWEDE BREEZE STAFF Editor in Chief ....... ............................ E laine Broadbent Associate Editor .............. ....... The Swede Breeze staff, with a nose for news and an accent on keeping the readers happy, devoted all its efforts to publishing an interesting, readable paper. This mimeographed bi-weekly kept the students informed about news and views, sports activities, and the latest gossip about GHS. Money left from the sales of single copies of the paper was kept in circulation by the staff, who borrowed nickels to buy cokes, and paid back the change box the next day l?i. The high cost of living had its ettect on the Swede Breeze, too, for there wasn't enough money in the budget to have the paper printed. The staff's worries ended, however, when a new mimeo- graph was purchased by the school. Much of the credit for the popularity of this year's Swede Breeze goes to the efficient staff and C. E. Farnham, who acted as handyman, instructor, and advisor. in ' if--e-fr-X ye, -r-J 'bl Nl? A get- acquainted picnic at Lafayette Park, September 8, opened the activity program for the year. During the year regularly scheduled classes were sponsored by the organization to teach the high school girls how to dance. Gothenburg was festively decorated at Christ- mas time by the Y-Teens who made nearly all the decorations themselves. Proceeds from this venture enabled the club to donate money to the piano fund and to the polio drive. After the Christmas supper December 20 Y Teen members sacked candy which was distrib uted to children down town by Santa Claus Key strips from Butternut Coffee cans were collected and sent to the Butternut Coffee Co which sent gifts to the orphanage at Holdrege, Nebraska Service projects terminated with the sale of lilies at Easter. All proceeds from this activity went to a fund for crippled children. Highlighting the social events was the annual semi-formal spring dance, February 21. Gaudre- MEMORIE Linda Larson, Meredith Roblee, Margie Gaudreault, Shirley Olson, Mar- ilyn Nelson, and Leora Rippen represented Gothenburg at the All-State Music Clinic held in Scottsbluff November l6, l7, and 18, 1950. Under the direction of Noble Cain, eminent choral director, the first annual Gothenburg Choral Clinic was conducted December 7, l95O. Over 300 students from eleven different schools in the surrounding vicinity took part in the clinic. Rehearsals during the day prepared the group for the public concert which they presented that evening. A capacity crowd filled the auditorium, and the proceeds from the concert went to the piano fund. A hush fell over the audience. Out of the darkness floated voices blended in Christmas Carols. The curtains parted, revealing a simulated stained glass window bearing a picture of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child. This church-like atmosphere furnished the background for the Christmas Concert, December l9, l95O. The mixed chorus, girls' glee, boys' quartet, and triple trio participated in the program. Featured soloists were Miss Ruth Owen, grade school music instructor, and Mr. Jim Craven, a student at Doane College. l ls A? FIRST ROW M Kratzenstein, M. Roblee, M. Zorn, R. R Bailey, D. Bailey, l. Stevens, February 28, 1951, the vocal music department presented a dude ranch operetta. ln the opening scene, two cowhands, portrayed by Allyn Chambers and Jearold Nickerson, were trying to hit upon a scheme that would enable them to make a living more easily. They decided to convert their ranch into a vacation spot for dudes. They fell asleep, and the re- mainder of the operetta was their dream about the troubles they encountered on the ranch, and the vacationers who stayed there. Miss Mary, the leading lady, was characterized by Ema Jayne Norsworthv. Marcia Zorn played op- posite Allyn. Other members of the cast were Marian Sall, Margie Gaud- reault, Delores Bailey, Linda Larson, Meredith Roblee. and Raymond Fox, Worthy of note is the tact that Mr. Cogqins composed seven songs tor the operetta, and transcribed all the dialociue. March 21, 1951, was the Easter Cantata. Versatile Max Coggins aqain displayed his talents and adapted From Olivet to Calvary, by Maunder, for the mixed chorus. Long hours nf rehearsals and individual practice prepared the students for the District IV Music Contest held in North Platte. April 13-14. 1951. The final vocal concert of the year was presented May 14, 1951, by the Girls' Glee Club. At rehearsals and all public performances, vocal groups were accompan- ied by Leora Ripoen.
