NOT AT THE TOP? CLIMBING CLASS COLORS: BLUE AND WHITE CLASS FLOWER: RED ROSE 22 CLASS HISTORY In 1953, 66 wide eyed, teenagers entered Goshen's doors to begin the career of high school studies, Many of them, no doubt, were thrilled: some frightened, others just there, Our Freshman home room teacher was Mr. lngold, As the school year began, class officers were chosen, Joyce Denny became president, fa position she kept all four years.J Betty Talbott was chosen Vice-President: Carol Davis was the efficient secretary: and Delores Doyle, the trustworthy treasurer. Our student council representatives were: Roger Wyss, Roger Greenamyer, Joe Crum, and Bruce Ruggles. School was not all work for us, even then, 'There was a wonderful, never-to-be-forgotten hayride on October 17, 1953. And how we enjoyed that trip to Demings with Miss Honaker. Most important of all, who will ever erase the memory of that first homecoming game, when we sent our attendant, Joyce Denny, to be in the queen's court? The freshman year ended happily for most of us. In September '54, we came back as sopho- mores -- our class had shrunk to 531 We were in two home rooms. Our teachers were Mr. Gorby and Mr, Van Broklin. As before, our first project was to elect officers. Joyce Denny was chosen President: Vice-President, Albert Anderson: Secretaries, Patty Starbuck and Joyce Griffith: Treasurers, Delores Doyle and Kenny Wolford. The student council members were Joyce Denny and Roger wyss. Joyce Denny was football attendant once more at the homecoming game. We enjoyed making programs and selling them at the games: money was being earned for our senior tripl In 1955 we saw ourselves as juniors -- the class we had all looked forward to, had finally comel Several members dropped out before this year was over, and we were left with a class of 58 members. Mrs. Martin andMr, Byrns, our home room teachers, worked very hard to help us earn money for our trip to Washington, Our class officers were: President, Joyce Denny: Vice-President, Roger Wyss: Secretary, Delores Doyle: and Treasurer, Patty Starbuck. The student council members were: Joe Crum, Joyce Denny, and Margaret Sanor. Who among us will ever forget the joyful day our rings arrived? or the jtmior-senior prom? the ball games when we sold tickets, candy, and soda-pop? and what about the homecoming game, the queen, and her attendants how pretty they looked! fAmong them Carol Davis, the junior attendantg Also, our junior play, The Scarecrow Creeps. Our big year arrived in September of '56, Our class was smaller--with only 50--but our hopes were high, President, Joyce Denny: Vice-President, Albert Anderson: Secretary, Patty Starbuck: and Treasurer, Delores Doyle have been our hard working, dependable officers. Oir home room teachers were Mrs. Martin, Mr. Byrns, and Mr. Zurbrugg. The senior student council members were: Lee Steer, Joe Crum, Joyce Denny, and Roger Wyss, 'I'his year, especially, we will never forget the homecoming game -- because Saundra Liebhart became the queen. Joyce Griffith, our pretty, head-cheerleader was runner up and Joyce Denny was the senior attendant. None of us will ever forget the Qiristmas party that Gail gave us either. We allhad fun. Billy's Goat, our senior comedy, was a play which we enjoyed performing, Then this year, it was our duty to make the year book. Oh my! what an experience for just amateurs. With Mrs. Martin as our sponsor, Joyce Denny as our editor, and the staff and its helpers, we managed to produce the '57 GMHONIAN, We want to thank all our teachers who have taught daily: all our underclassmen for their co-operation with our plays, the yearbook, and all other activities: our principal: our sponsors -- in fact, everyone for helping to make our four years in Goshen High School the four happiest years of our lives. wifi ,,4.u.4...,5. ,r N E2 M :hm .:QZ' . . THE SCARECROW CREEPS This is a three act comedy and mystery, which takes place in the Gage Manor, where Roderick Gage has invited all his relatives to spend the week-end. The relatives arrived at the Gage Manor with the in- tentions of hearing Roderick read his will, but instead he told them of the Carita Diamond, which has been stolen and hidden from the Gage family many years ago. Many strange things happened while searching for the diamond, a scarecrow was seen prowling in the garden in the dark, a rocking chair rocked by it- self, lights going on and off, and the disappearance of Roderick. With the help of Dr. Kenneth Gage, Norma Gage found the Carita Diamond, which was hidden behind the pendulum of the clock. The ghostly body of Roderick Gage hanging in the bay window caused Adam 'I'hrogg, the butler, to confess the stealing and hiding of the diamond. Roderick revealed that the Carita Diamond was a fake and turned his fortune and estate over to Norma Gage and Dr. Kenneth Gage on the condition that they marry. CAST Adam Throgg . Maudie Hobbs . BII.l.Y'S GOAT On a dreary April day, when the family is particularly upsetting, Billy Hay comes to sell Mr, Carter a radio program and stays to become the father of the entire family fora month. Henry leaves for a vacation of peace, and Billy has his hands full trying to control the destinies of the various members of the household, none of whom is willing to give him the least co-operation. He finally resorts to spanking Madge when she is determined to jump from an airplane with two parachutes. This leads to love at first smack: but they are not permitted to be happy until after Violet tries to elope with a married man, Beulah falls in love with Billy as anideal movie hero, and the house is cleared of suitors when Billy spreads the rumor that the Carters have lost their money and must go to work This brings Henry home quickly to kick Billy into the tniddle of next month, but he at least forgives to the extent of offering him the managership of his Los Angeles branch and all ends happily .... for Billy and Madge. The two homeroom teachers are Mr. Elsass and Mr. Tucker. During the year we have been busy trying to earn money. Some of our projects included: selling school supplies at noon, selling re- freshments at the athletic games, sponsoring six record hops following the games, and co-sponsoring a dance at Sebring with Sebring Student Council. J Christmas season brought two long awaited events. Our class rings arrived on December 19, and we had a successful Christmas Dance. We worked diligently on the Junior Play which we presented in the spring. The last major event of our Junior year was the Junior and Senior Prom. 'EQ' 5 MAHONING COUNTY CHAMPS The 1956 football team, led by captain Roger Wyss, was one of the most successful in Goshen's history. Confronted by its strongest schedule, the team blasted through to a nine win one loss record. The only defeat coming at the hand of Leetonia ir1 a hard fought 13-6 decisidn. The greatest attribute that can be paid an ath- letic team is that the players were competitive, hard workers, lovers of the game, and never once could have been called quitters. These qualities typified the 1956 edition of the Goshen football team that won the Inter-county Championship and the Mahoning County Championship for the third consecutive year. Four seniors and one junior were honored on the Inter-county football team: Captain Roger Wyss, Ed Wilson, Don Saltsman, Bruce Ruggles, and Bob Stallsmith, the junior. Graduation will take a high toll this yearas nine seniors will be lost. Roger Wyss scored 58 points and threw 14 touch- down passes. Ed Wilson, his main target, caught eight touchdown passes and wasastalwart on defenseg he was probably the best receiver in the school 's his- tory. Don Saltsman played a first team tackle for three years. Albert Anderson, handicapped by a shoulder injury, served two years as an end and guard. Bruce Ruggles, a rugged and aggressive center, served two years on the first team. Roger Greenamyer was the most improved player of a year ago. .Toe Crum, defensive line backer for two years, turned in the best game of his career in downing Sebring '27-O. J im Auman was a loyal team member for four years and Carl Lindner worked his way into a starting assignment in his senior year. Four lettermen gave Coach Tucker a nucleus to build a high scoring successful ball club. The leading scorer for the seasc was Captain Roger Wyss with 375 points and runners-up were Bob Stallsmith with 192 and Norman Hill with 191. Wayne Walters and Ed Wilson along with Hill have carried most of the rebounding burden and have also contributed great' to the scoring department. Soon we bid farewell to our dear old school. Although it is necessary for us to leave, our memories will never cease to Flow back through those four glorious years spent in Goshen High School. Goshen Hi--the name means nothing to people of far off lands and often not to people of nearby towns: but to us it is a sacred name, one that stands for happy days. We know that we as students shall never forget, and we hope that we'hQ'e- accomplished something that will make the 5 '44 school remember us. ' ga Q we The time has come, when friends from dear friends, must part and each one must go his separate way, but memory shall always hold a vivid picture of the best days of our lives--the ones spent within these walls of dear old Goshen High. We leave behind the wish that everyone who follows us will be as enthusiastic about our school as we have been. On behalf of the class of 1957, we want to thank all our teachers who have taught daily: all our underclassmen for their co-operation with our plays, the year book, and all other activities. We sincerely thank our advertisers for their support in making our year book possible. In fact, everyone for helping to make our four years in Goshen High School the four happiest years of our lives.
