The Sophomores are the Weld- ers in the midst of the workers rush... The Freshmen are the Mechanics who have hardly begun their work...i The Eighth graders are digging their wayiupward while the Seventh graders are busily sweeping up the rear. Sixty-five industrious workers entered to begin a four year employment. . We chose Roger Stitle, President, Lee McCluggage, Vice President, Doris Schneider, Secretary, and Shirley Bricker, Treasurer, to assist our foreman, Mr. Matasy. We had the pleasure of working in the new addition to Goshen, which was added during the summer and also made use of the newly opened Cafeteria after Christmas. We,being an intelligent as well as an industrious class, had partici- pants in the scholarship tests at Mount Union. we also took time off from our work to put on a program for the other employees of Goshen and Co. It is a custom of Goshen andCkL to provide a three month vacation for all employees of its factory. We very willingly accepted this vacation. When we returned in the fall of the year we were Sophomores with one year behind us. Our foreman this year was Mr. Van Brocklin. Roger Stitle was President, Dick Hahlen, Vice President, Doris Schneider, Secretary, and Mary Beth Morrow, Treasurer. We began to make money by selling pro- grams at basketball games and saving tax stamps. we seemed to lose no in- telligence during the summer and weomce again had participants in scholar- ship tests. When our annual vacation ended,we returned and received the promotion to Juniors, which made us upper classmen. As our Junior year began our department of Goshen and Co. was under the direction of Mrs. Jackson. We elected Carson McNeely, President, Lee McCluggage, Vice President, Doris Schneider, Secretary, and Shirley Ann Wyss, Treasurer. During our Junior year, we sponsored dances, roller skating parties, sold Christmas cards, platters, magazines, .candy, and basketball pencils to reach our goal of '32000. Our class took a trip to Akron, under the supervision of Mr. Ingold our history teacher, -and went through the Naval Air Base. We presented for the enjoyment of our employees and families, a play entitled HAlong Came Peggyn under the direction of Miss Melick. After our short vacation, we came back to resume our fourth and final year at Goshen and Co. Mrs. Jackson once again became our advisor with Roger Stitle, Presidentg Carson McNeely, Vice President, Doris Schneider, Secretary, and Judy Galbreath, Treasurer. We are striving to make enough money for our long awaited trip to Washington D. C. by collecting class dues and saving tax stamps. We chose for our play this year nGrandad Steps Outu under the supervision of Mrs. Jackson. As our Annual goes to press we are looking forward to Commencement on May 27, after which we will leave for Washington on May 28. I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X XI XII XIII XIV. '53 elm P A rainy day in the Spring of 1972, when Mrs. Roger Stitle, formerly Doris Schneider, and her 16 year old daughter are cleaning the attic, they happen to come across an old trunk which holds her High School memories. Her daughter is looking through the pages of the 1953 Goshonian, her mother's Senior Class pictures, and is very inquisitive as to what each is doing. . The first picture she sees is of her father, Roger, who is now the owner of the Stitle Contracting and Building Co. Across fr m the picture she sees Marlene Cornett and Shirley Ann Wyss. Doris remarks that they now own the Damascus Roller Rink, where Reed Galbreath is the floor man- ager. Betty Martig is the main skating attraction. Next she sees a picture of Phyllis Maurer McNeely and her husband Carson, the high school sweethearts, who are now running the largest hotel in Patmos and are also raising their three children. The dinners are pre- pared by the world's famous chef, Lee Althouse, and his two cooks, Marylee Cameron and Bertha Swiger. Three of their attractive waitresses are Patty Close, Judy Galbreath, and Adrienne Russell. AThe doorman is H mer Marty and the two handsome bellhops are Bruce Behneryand Eldon Morckel. She sees James Stoffer's picture and remembers that he is the most popular doctor on the staff at Dead On Arrival,Hospital. His medical sec- retary is Lona Adams and one of the nurses is Mae Earley. Just completing their internships are Glenn Steer and Bill Pauley. One of the patients is Joe Rill who broke his leg when he wrecked his l972 Cadillac with Jet- O-Matic Drive. He was cited for reckless driving by State Patrolman, Dick Blasiman. A picture of one of Goshen's Style Shows catches her eye and she re- calls that Frances Baird is now ownerofthe largest model agency in Damas- cus. Her head models are Norma Mincks, Gaye Moore, and Barbara Conkle. The latest sensation in men's fashions is plastic bathing suits now being modeled by Herbert Gordon and Omar Shreve. As she turns the page, she sees Mabel Grim's picture and recollects that Mabel is now owner of a Gymnastic Center and teaches Judo and Wrestl- ing. The head instructor is George Doyle. Near the Gym Center is Shirley's Beauty Shoppe owned and operated by Shirley Bricker whose hair stylist is Orville Blythe, Jr. and the manicurist Blower Hairdryers, that dry your hair in Bowman. The new Bowman S seconds, were invented by Sonny was introduced by Betty Holloway sheep wool. Leafing through the pages, a yellowed sheet of music drops from the book and brings to her mind the new musicalnhit on Broadway HKarlen'S Darlingsn starring David Myton, Norman Wilcox, Walter Townsend, and Melvin Weingart, directed by Harry Karlen. This music reminds her of the half-time ceremonies between the Damas- cus Damsels, whose star quarterback is Shirley Ruth Wyss and the Garfield Gussies, coached by Peggy Rardon. The feature attraction of the halftime i ceremony was two baton artists, Sally Miskimins and Marilyn Weingart Head- land, who are now with the Cleveland Brown's Rockettes. I Marilyn's husband, Willard, is a top salesman for the Mercer Garter Firm owned by Bill Mercer. His secretary is LaVonne Miller. She now sees a picture of Lee McCluggage, the high scorer in high school basketball. Lee is now playerwcoach of the Columbus Cagers. His manager is Edwin Greenamyer, who also takes care of all their bookings. As she turns to the last page of the album, they see a picture of two girls leaving the school building, proudly carrying their diplomas, one, being Carolyn McPherson, who is now a famous concert pianist, the other, Carolyn Devine, who is employed in one of New York 's leading department stores. This closes the pages of Doris's high school days, but it brings back many fine memories which she will always carry close to her heart as the good old days at Goshen Union Hi as a member of the outstanding class, The Class of '53. at P llcrir M, ,C .r if 5. 1' 1 'K I 1 I if t H- Q l T 'ifatif' 4 dC,i 1- K -' 4 , .H ,- g Marlene, Doris, Mabel Mugging as usual Marylee, Bertha, Betty Ull H db Eg! ALONG CAME PEGGY Wallace Black, an unknown author, went to Atlantic City to write a book. While there, his servants rented the apartment to Peggy Arbuckle to make a little extra money. Mr. Blace came back unexpectedly and was found in his apartment with Miss Arbuckle, an old flame of his, by Madge Beverly, his fiancee. Wallace's wealthy Aunt Kate arrived without word and, when she found that Wallace had concealed a girl in his apartment, decided to cut him from her will. To add more trouble, while Madge and Aunt Kate were there, another of his old flames arrived on the scene. But in the end all came out well, for his Aunt Kate forgave Wallace and rewilled her money to him, and he and Madge were Sweethearts again.
