'v E7 19 0-1981 A Year To Remember The event I will remember best from 1980-81 will be the homecoming of the hos- tages. I was so happy when I heard on the radio that the plane was up and Iran could do no further harm to our people. -Paul Kahlin A NEW PRESIDENT Many things happened in 1980-81, but one of the most important was the election of President Reagan. He went into the White House will all sorts of budget cuts that he thought would be very simple to handle. But as his Presidential term progressed. he they were not so simple to handle and they may not work at all. -Charlotte Dishman ATLANTA KILLINGS When the black children in Atlanta start- ed to come up missing, there were many people upset about it. It seemed no one knows how these children were dying. Groups of men were gathered to watch and make sure children return home safely. Some were so frightened that they trusted no one, not even the people believed to be helping. -Brenda Arnold OLYMPIC BOYCOTT 'J I think that the Moscow Boycott was a main event in 1980-81. I don't think it was fair for President Carter to keep America's athletes away from the Olympics. You can't mix politics and sports. I was glad that all the athletes got a special medal from President Carter. That was the least he could do for them. -Stefanie Eldridge Photos by Crimson Staff and Associated Press. ---v WELCOME HOME HOSTAGEST Shootings 'hs v' Inflation Inflation was the most memo- rable experience 1 had in 1980- 81. Each Day of the week was special: Ripped and Torn Day, Dress Up Day, and Bruised Zebra Day. Field Day highlighted Spirit Week's fun with a Volkswagon push, class roll, crab soccer, powder-puff football, and a dunk-a-teacher tank. Thursday night's annual bonfire and snake dance ended class competition and sent the Redskins, fired up, to win the Homecoming game against Rochester. D NV I The thrill of victory . . . Many graduating students performed skits in the two hour show, proving that they were not the serious seniors that they claimed to be. The Master of Ceromonies for 1981 was James Venosky. His performance brought erruptions of laughter from an en- thusiastic audience. Skits this year included The Pharmacist, Mildred and Virgil Take a Vacation, Toad Debonar and the Bingo Brothers, Masque, and the ever-popular let's-make-fun- of-teachers sketch. il U Hlwi l Gi 'sa I ki ,gl Follies was fun for all! f Mildred and Virgil took a vacation on stage during the 1981 lfollii Ryan Solomon, still riding 21 U'lCYVlf'7 Steve Lamliright and Sonia Nofziger: Follies was their encore to a super yearf Hoos1er Scholar Gloria Blosser lxancw Bose Mary Cherniak David Chupp Teresa Dx ck Douglas Earmwald Christopher Graff Paul Crise Iom Kortie Tony I amb Steve I ambright Suzanne I eatherman Lori Litwiler Rebecca McAfoos David McCann Barbara Meyer Beth Miller Rebecca Moyer Sonia Nofziger Dan Oplinger Tim Oyer Peter Paris Tim Puro Bill Rieth Jim Roberts Michele Ruhling have Saunders Steven Schlabach Jody Schott John Shoup Carol Sibal Roger Smith Ellen Snyder Jeff Stoltzfus Robert Swihart kelly Thul James Venosky Sherri Watkins Karmin Wieland Matt Wittrig Tom Wogoman V31Gd1CtOF13H Barb Meyer, Beth Miller Matt Wlttflg Sa1utator1ar1 Teresa Dyck LOT1 L1tW11er Award mners American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Carla Coxington Bausch and Lomb Science Award Bill Rieth Bill Walton Memorial Tim Berkex Business Education Awards Dave Chupp Cecilia Chernial Doug Farmwald Stephanie Inbodw Laurie Weldx Earl Arnold Award Matt Wittrig Elizabeth fuson Scholarship Michelle Ruhling Evening Exchange of Goshen Scholarship Ellen Sm der Goshen Education Association Date Chupp Sue Leathei man GHS Acting Awards Chris Mex er Sonia Nofziger Bill Rieth John Shoup kathy Ulmer Charlee Luttrell Merit Scholarship tGoshen Collegel Barb Mex er Menno Seniors Scholarship tGoshen Collegel leresa Dx ck Lori Litwilei Matt Vt ittrig Goshen Kiwanis Scholarships Pete Paris Michelle Ruhling Goshen News Scholarship Awards Joanne Haarer kent Vandenoover Susan 7ook Suzanne Buckingham Barb Mever Beth Miller Bill Rieth Matt Vtittrig Herr Pratt Scholarship Mat Wittrig kim Hartzler Award Tim Thul Mike Hartman Spirit Award Steve Lambright Maxine Nislex National Merit Scholars Lori Litwiler Barb Mex er Beth Millet Outstanding Senior Girl Michele Ruhling Phend Memorial Date McCann 'I9 e Made Itlll Senior activities at GHS included the Senior Banquet, Prom, Follies, Awards Night and Commencement. The three GHS choirs donned hats and mittens to greet Santa Clause on the Court House lawn. They also performed in numer- ous concerts throughout the year, Like the choir, the orchestra also performed many concerts. But most will remember the strains of music that filled the auditorium during the production of South Pacific. 1981 GHS Orchestra 1981 GHS Choir Crimsonaires l The 1981 Goshen High School Crimsonaires I Feel A Song Coming On 1 feel a Song Coming On is the theme song of the 1980-81 Crimsonaires. Composed of twenty students, this group travels to entertain and compete, spreading music with their every step. Led by G. Merrill Swartley, director of the singing group for the past twenty years, the students center their talents on jazz and popular music. Dancing is done to the heat of many of their songs. And it was long ago that they traded their choir robes for hoth fancy and casual costumes. Hours of practice and dedication mark this group. Like any sport or academic discipline, these students put their hearts and minds together with their talent and end up feeling like a song. Vic Maximenko, on stage with the Crimson HIFPS. Advised in 1981 by Randi Mochamer and edited by Becky Appanzeller, the Crimson sought to balance its budget while keeping costs to students at a minimum. Raffles were held at basket- ball games and donations from the community were sought. It was the Crimson staff that was re- sponsible for the organization of annu- al student pictures, including those all- important senior pictures. Photogra- phers were on hand at nearly every event at GHS. Their sole purpose was to catch a glimpse of 1981 and preserve it for tomorrow. 1981 Crimson Editor Becky Appenzeller. Students were actually paired off and married, Their marriages saw the same ups and downs as most real ones: budgeting expenses, baby costs, home mortages, insurances, and even divorces. Students were responsible for their marriages, their homes, and even their babies, Babies were uncooked eggs that married couples were responsible for. Those who broke their baby before the one week time period was up were charged with child abuse and were sentenced to write a two page composition on the subject. 3' hi. ---gv '- ,Q ., I, 1, X 3 1' a . 4s5agfr.1-.k,r-.q D fi ' ' ' 'iii' ' . - 1 V ' 1. .jga - '. , - 1, 1 Ng i s-,-gym, ' 1 .' ,ir .Y .a, 'P-4, :.:i 'gif' 'P.'f?aJ3T-:Hg . 1-' With 'f.. 15'- - ,xl I g-.EMA .'f:-f..k'!lir:'. Music has been a special part of GHS for many years, and 1981 was no exception. The band showed its colors on the football field and in parade lines, as well as on the concert stage and in the basketball arena. The orchestra swept us back to World War Il when it pro- vided music for the student production of South Pacific. Juniors choose courses. They may even develop their own class through senior Project. English students are active stu- dents. They publish both The Crimson and the Tomohawk. They produce two plays each year. And many spend their Sat- urdays competing at local speech meets. All are students of English. It can be used in everyday life, stated Mr. James Hughes, head of the A Industrial Arts Department. 1 -7 Practical, it is, and different u from most classes because students learn more from actually doing than by reading and taking tests. And better than everything, it's fun, says James Hughes Mr. Steve Shively. Students at GHS can learn such varied skills as drafting, woodwork, metals, auto mechanics, and building trades. Many students will obtain jobs in which they will use the skills learned in their Industrial Arts classes. For those who do not, their classes will not be wasted. For in these times of high inflation, home and auto repairs are practical and economical things to know about. Industrial Arts students learn to use and respect tools. They develop skills and an understanding of our environment. Mrs. Miller, Head Nurse for the Goshen Community Schools, saw us through one of the roughest flu seasons in recent years. George Madison, Supervisor of the Custodians, was over-run with incom- ing freshmen, and yet he managed to keep everything from plugged toilets to heat and air conditioning running as smoothly as possible. Often, George seemed to be the most popular man in the building-whenever someone wanted something fixed! Cafeteria Manager Mary Miller was busy throughout the year planning for a full load of freshmen in 1981-82. The food services was expanded to handle three lines at once. A daily salad bar was added to the menu this year. Unlike this year's freshmen and sophomores, they are not new to GHS. They are familiar with the building, teachers, and classes. Unlike seniors, juniors are not dizzy with the prospects of gradu- ation. They, are, however, begin- ning to see the horizons ahead of them. Some are looking at col- leges and tech. schools. Others have already found jobs. But all see before them a new world. Being a senior is just a tomor- row away!
