Farmlands and rolling hills of West Germany, the picturesque Swiss Alps, and the ancient history of lta- ly's largest city, Rome, are among the authenic sur- roundings experienced by four exchange students from Europe who spent their senior years at G.H.S. Lucerne, Switzerland marked the home of Jens Lub- ben before he settled in Goshen with the James Bandy family. Jens enjoyed skiing and mountain climbing on the Alps, but when he came to Goshen, he picked up on our American football and played on the '78 state championship team. Jens was greatly impressed with the G.H.S. spirit and the excitement brought out by the football squad. Thomas Wanja traveled to Goshen by way of Geneva, Switzerland, and spent his time in the Maple City with Dr. Owen Hess family. Thomas, like Jens, developed an interest in football and played for G.H.S. He also spent free time skate boarding and playing table tennis with his friends, two of his favorite pastimes. With its historic architecture and the ancient ruins of Rome, ltaly became the starting base for Roberto Vin- ciquerra's journey to the U.S. Roberto enjoyed the freedom of G.H.S. because his Roman system was much different. In Italy, Roberto had to choose a par- ticular field of study and follow it all through high school. His school had only 400 students from 9th through 12th grade, so G.H.S. must have been quite an experience. Roberto also participated on the football team and earned an athletic letter for his effort. Second semester brought Claudia Liedtke to Goshen after spending first semester in Illinois. Claudia came from Kiel, West Germany. Her hobbies included ceram- ics, music, knitting and reading. Claudia enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of G.H.S., its students and teach- ers. Claudia stayed with the Greig Weaver family. The exchange students added a different dimension to life at G.H.S.g they shared with us a glimpse of their cultures. In return, they learned from and enjoyed life in America for the year. Sharing Cultures Foreign Exchange .ii- .-,A A I . l .Q . n 3. . F. 1- . ,pr -.L
