Keep Out IVlen Working Beginning in the spring of 1978, the long await- ed and planned for construction project got un- derway. This project not only changed the build- ing, but the typical lives of high school students as well. Throughout the year, students sidestepped boxes, construction materials, and workers to get to their classes. They shivered in barely heated rooms, walked outside to many of their classes, and stayed clear of the areas marked STU- DENTS KEEP OUT . They learned to ignore the ear-splitting noise of construction tools, found they were capable of carrying whole locker's con- tents from class to class, and avoided especially dusty or drippy places. Sometimes it was hard to belive that education was actually taking place, but students and facul- ty alike adapted very well. With laughter, accep- tance, and a spirit of camaraderie, everyone calmly ignored or dealt with construction prob- lems as they arose. It was worth it as we saw the school begin to take shape. By the end of the year, wallpaper was hung, bulletin boards were up, and restrooms were open. Brand new rooms were being used, and senior awards were pre- sented in an almost completed auditorium. The construction project dominated our school lives this year and caused many problems and changes. However, it was an experience that caused us to work together and laugh at prob- Iems, it was an experience we will not soon forget v I -..E lnilll ildll 1 -f f. -. -Safsrssrfsfsmfsr 'gf' 1-:g ':1: :gig::!:g.:-fg!:-::5:g:gI'-' - 'fizirz 1 13211,1ffzfzfriizifilziiii-'62:91?f?51:I:11522 Ny szlzlr:515121Eg:5:g1:5:gS:5:g1:E2:f:2:gf:!1g1:, i :-15153:21:5:ErE5:51:1:E1E5:Ef:5:52:5:1r:5:51:Z ' F :pig1,:ga,::g:,:,:-1--:-.'-Q-, .,,1E:g,::2:g i 1' ,z151g35:sg555255,:zgipsiigizgiifiiisiiiizisii' ' i ?1E3:52E5:22Z2:5:5'2j.' :1'f'f':S:ES:5:52:i:E1: i'i 'I'-'-Sw:-' ,'5'.g:,-.g.7::5:::g1:g::2:g1:2: iv, 323:21:25:31:51525111515-115:gag:-Qzgzggzzzg Xi 'pgzgzg'4.1.,-:::g:gg:2:5:g3:2:2::2:g:51215313 'qw Sy:-1329!-Ig3:-2-Ig-2-2:25-2-155:-:gtg-:-25.9 'C' Z'Z:2:-:'ig3:-24:12-1535 ' .-241-1-131:-1, Ulf 52:g:g:g5:g:5:gI:-:g:- 1- -'- - -L-igizgzgtzgzgigz iii' a:a:e3E21E51:.:.:,:: ' ,.-2322155315: 1353311-13' 2- .1-:E ,. CA. Rabinowitzj With this in mind, the Biology ll classes of G.H.S., students from Laurence North. and their faithful instructors set out on March 30, 1979, for lslamorada, Florida, to become a part of the marine ecological spectrum. Throughout the week the students were re- quired to classify 50 species of animals and 20 species of plants. Also required was an in depth study of a habitat, and 10 ecological profiles. The week was not all work and no play. There was always time for a toss of the frisbee, sand- lot basketball or a rousing game of volleyball tat low tide of coursej. The week came to a close too soon. Friend- ships had started, the food was tasting good. the work was done and the fun could begin. As all experiences go, it had to end. Garry Champ helps load the van and boat on the final day Farmlands and rolling hills of West Germany, the picturesque Swiss Alps, and the ancient history of lta- ly's largest city, Rome, are among the authenic sur- roundings experienced by four exchange students from Europe who spent their senior years at G.H.S. Lucerne, Switzerland marked the home of Jens Lub- ben before he settled in Goshen with the James Bandy family. Jens enjoyed skiing and mountain climbing on the Alps, but when he came to Goshen, he picked up on our American football and played on the '78 state championship team. Jens was greatly impressed with the G.H.S. spirit and the excitement brought out by the football squad. Thomas Wanja traveled to Goshen by way of Geneva, Switzerland, and spent his time in the Maple City with Dr. Owen Hess family. Thomas, like Jens, developed an interest in football and played for G.H.S. He also spent free time skate boarding and playing table tennis with his friends, two of his favorite pastimes. With its historic architecture and the ancient ruins of Rome, ltaly became the starting base for Roberto Vin- ciquerra's journey to the U.S. Roberto enjoyed the freedom of G.H.S. because his Roman system was much different. In Italy, Roberto had to choose a par- ticular field of study and follow it all through high school. His school had only 400 students from 9th through 12th grade, so G.H.S. must have been quite an experience. Roberto also participated on the football team and earned an athletic letter for his effort. Second semester brought Claudia Liedtke to Goshen after spending first semester in Illinois. Claudia came from Kiel, West Germany. Her hobbies included ceram- ics, music, knitting and reading. Claudia enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of G.H.S., its students and teach- ers. Claudia stayed with the Greig Weaver family. The exchange students added a different dimension to life at G.H.S.g they shared with us a glimpse of their cultures. In return, they learned from and enjoyed life in America for the year. Sharing Cultures Foreign Exchange .ii- .-,A A I . l .Q . n 3. . F. 1- . ,pr -.L 1. But not all the learn- ing Cand sometimes not the most im- portant learningj takes place in the classroom under a teacher's guidance. Learning is the result of interaction between people and contemplation within one's self. The reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic were important this year, but our learning took on other aspects. The construction project forced us to learn flexibility, adapta- tion, and concentration. Our friends taught us how to relate to people, have fun, and how to deal with problems. Our teachers gave us their subject matter and themselves. We learned - not only in the classroom, but also in the classroom of life at G.H.S. Involving Students . . . The physical education department devel- oped and put into practice a new curriculum this year. This change offered sophomore students a choice in learning a variety of lifetime skills. The department offered courses such as swimming, badmitton, vol- leyball, and softball - skills that the stu- dents would be able to use in their future lives. One particularly popular section was the dance section, which all students were required to complete. Disco dancing was taught along with traditional folk dances. Student and faculty response to this new program was quite positive. The science department this year was not as disrupted as others by the construction project. They stayed in their rooms until the end of the school year when rebuilding start- ed in ernest on the third floor. Students par- ticipated in chemistry, physics. general sci- ence, and biology classes, adding to their knowledge of the world around themselves. 1. Besides the typical moves due to the con- struction project, the English department ex- perienced other changes this year. CAPPS, or Comprehensive Assessment Program Planning System, was tried out for the first time. CAPPS is a test that measures the personal skill of the student in English, math, science, and history. Each student in 3rd, 6th, 8th, and 10th grades was tested in English this year according to the regulations of this state mandated program. nl I 1. Two were given with Bethany, one with Wawasee and Bethany, and the senior concert was given with the band. This year's orchestra consisted of 19 members. A quartet composed of Anita Stoltfus, Teresa Shrock, Kathy Kneipple and Marilyn Joldersma per- formed with the high school choirs for their concerts. This quartet also accompanied the Crimsonaires on their trip to Pennsylvania. The Chamber Orchestra, which is composed of a selected few members of the orchestra, attended state contest and received a first division rating. The Chamber Orchestra held eight performances this year with the Bethany Chamber Orchestra. According to Mr. Kirk, this year was highly successful despite the problems construction presented. He com- mented, l appreciated the way my students worked through the year despite many difficulties, making this year very successful anyway. Band Played On . -T I. ,, I' 1 l 1- 5 I1 .L Row 1: T. The band, under the directions of David Plank, received a second at contest, which they considered quite good as this was their first year under a new judging association. The pom pom corp, under the direction of Patty Dechant, was different this year in that there were 9 members instead of the traditional 16. Also, instead of doing new routines at each football game, they did the same one. However, when the basketball season rolled around, they had a new routine for each game. This year's awards were received by Mike Edwards for Outstanding Marchman and outstanding percussionist: John Shoup received the outstanding sophomore award: and Ann Trenshaw received the award for outstanding corp person. The constuction project presented one main obstacle in that the darkroom was set up late and moved several times. The staff spent the first few weeks of class learning the funda- mentals of layout design and copy writing. They also chose a theme for the book and set up produc- tion guidelines. They then put their knowledge into action to produce the 1978-79 Crimson. 1, Members of the staff work on various tasks. 2. X . ,f Building trades is a class-lab situation which allows students to learn the building trades by actually building a house. The students worked on the house every afternoon, learning a vari- ety of skills. They put in the electrical and plumbing systems, poured ce- ment, put up drywall, and painted, there was little they did not do on the house. The house will be sold and the profits used to finance a similar build- ing next year. The industrial arts department of- fered students another hands-on learning situation this year. They learned basic and more advanced skills in wood shop, metal shop and me- chanical drawing, taking a variety of projects from planning through finish- ing stages. Auto mechanics students worked on cars that were brought in for work ranging from tune-ups to more complicated jobs. The depart- ment experienced no great drawbacks due to the construction project. They did experience a greater enrollment in their classes, though, and are looking forward to adding more classes and possibly another staff member in the future. 0 - In .L fl' 6 A . -sw' - M 1 5. i 9 ' -9 Q-sv' SPORTS ' -if .ni-s' . ffzflfl, 11 I' ,.f . A history-making football season featured Goshen's first trip to the state AA playoffs, and the Redskins didn't stop until they brought home the 42-inch state championship trophy. The Redskins accomplished the feat in record style by shutting out three opponents. They trimmed Home- stead 19-0 for the District 5 title on Foreman Field, then they whipped previously unbeaten Delta 27-0 for the regional crown on Foreman, before going to War- ren Central High School of Indianapolis to blank Brownsburg 9-0 for the championship. lt was a very cold, windy night for the final game, but 3,000 Goshen fans made the trip and there was a huge welcome home in downtown Goshen for the champs who were paraded through town on a firetruck. Goshen's defense was amazing in the playoffs, allow- ing Homestead only 82 total yards, Delta 122, and Brownsburg 35. Goshen rambled for 189 yards against Homestead, 386 against Delta and 94 against Browns- burg. Senior linebacker Tom Bailey added frosting to the Goshen championship by bringing home the coveted Phil Eskew Award for mental attitude. According to Mr. Mault, the musicians must have professional and dedicated attitudes in order to form a good pep band. This year's band showed these attitudes and consistently gave excellent, spir- it-building performances during the basketball games. The pep band consisted of 45 high school stu- dents who rehearsed during their lunch hours three times weekly. They played up to date music, which the Booster Club helped them purchase this year. 1. Mayor Chisick was the featured speaker at the induction ceremony for the National Honor Society held on March 29. The 54 members in the NHS this year made up of 1570 of the senior class and 5170 of the junior class. According to Robert Mathews, faculty adviser, they are inducted on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service qualities. The money that the club made selling concessions was used partially for the NHS scholarship loan fund. Mrs. Kim Kiser, adviser to the Sunshine Society, stated that the main function of the society is to help others, meeting needs when- ever they are made evident to the club members. Therefore, much of the money they raised selling carna- tions on Valentine's Day and St. Pa- trick's Day was donated to charities. The club took part in several other activities. The members brought their fathers to Daddy Date Night, a potluck dinner. They also sponsored an ldeal Lady Tea. They gave teach- ers cookies on Valentine's Day, and sent cards to people in the hospital. The members worked in order to ob- tain sweaters, keys, or letters. 1.
