In fact, some of the hassle was eliminated and students by years end anticipated the next school year. A year later, the Crimson celebrated the country's 200th birthday with a theme built around the once-in-a-life-time event. ln '77 We Put Life into GHS was the Crimson 's theme with principal Fiandt's goal to have students to do your best . The Crimson focused on people and people relationships in their many expanded activities that GHS provided. This year the Crimson staff selected Stepping Into Change because it was the year the 7 million dollar renova- tion began in the spring. Prior to renovation, other changes took place. The school served as a host to ex-president Gerald Ford and to Medowlark Lemon and his Globetrottersg experi- enced the worst winter storm in the history of the state and midwest which saw students out of school for over one week: recognized the first GHS individual state champion in modern-day history with Dave Edlund winning the 185-pound championshipg witnessed the school's first Blood Day ,' and saw the continuing theme of to do your best from the staff. We hope you enjoy this, the '77- 7B edition ofthe Crimson. '!. Lg? g ee. 'A -wr. ' Af- neg. 1 M, Q.: a af.. ,., Aa a , . am , ., -Zyl ., 'ill ,,.t - 1 4. .. ' I -NH .1 rg, HM 5 H ' . rm t ., . Director Penny White an- nounced that seniors Greg Weaver and Beth Van- derheyden will fill the leading roles. Marine Bioloby students and their sponsor Mr. Carl Weaver left for the Florida Keys on their two-week excursion to find facts on ocean life. The troupe re- turned one week after the rest of the student body started following the break. As the grapplerettes displayed their behind-the- scenes talent of decorating the hallways and locker- rooms in support ofthe varsity and iuniorvarsity wrestl- ing teams, Coach John Dechant's and Randy Flobeitson's squads charged out to a series of victories. Varsity wrestlers made their team record 4-1, while the JV team started off with a perfect 5-0 mark. The girls' swim team ended it's season with a loss to Warsaw making it's record 11-4 forthe year. The 'Skins finished fourth in the swim sectional with sophomores Tracy Anglemeyer and Beth Chevalier qualifying forthe state meet. There seemed to be no way of cooling off the boys' swim team as it continued it's hot streak, going unde- feated in it's first four dual meets. The fish swam to victories over Mishawaka Marian, Concord, Penn, and state-ranked Elkhart Central as sophomore Steve Con- der established a new school record in the 500-yard freestyle with a blazing 5:03.6. The girls' varsity basketball team lost it's season opener to Rocheester 54-34, but rallied for six consecu- tive victories, while the boys' varsity squad was struggl- ing along winless. ' First-year coach Allen Severn experimented with sev- eral different starting line-ups, but couldn't come up with one effective enough to put up a victory in the win-loss column until the Goshen Holiday Tournament when the 'Skins notched wins over Mishawaka Marian and Westview. It was the first tourney championship in 11 years for Goshen. --ann V , 'aS Qi as iii' X-A RTF --.4 l 'he 'I FM X 4-uf' X' I S54 -K! -J. NK Mig 'AN 4 K3 O a-A-Q-bgve-u 'Sr vw,- . as. What they've found here, they may not have been able to get anywhere else. Some came to learn a skill. With training in hundreds of different fields to choose trom. Some came for the chance to travel in Europe, Korea, Alaska, the Canal Zone,Hawaii, or almost anywhere in the U.S.A. Some came to meet a unique personal challenge. Like assuming responsibility at an early age. Some came to get a start on their college education on their own time. With the Army paying up to 752, of the tuition for approved courses. And some came to do something positive for their country. Which is a pretty good reason in itself.
