A building recorded as the oldest high school structure in Elkhart County has looked the same to students for many years, but if one would take a closer look as we did when we reported back to school in August,we found many changes had taken place within the building. Despite renewing acquaintances, meeting new friends, and getting the feel for school, students found that a new attitude was in the air with the addition of a new principal, assistant principal, and two new teachers. We were told how important it was to be ourselves and to do our best, which hinted that student relationships would be improved over past years. lt wasn't long before small groups and cliques became less apparent and respect for each other started to take hold more than ever before. lntoductlon 2 il For approximately 825 students and 53 faculty members, it became quite evident that the school year would focus on people. Did someone once say that it is people which make up a place? Well, if they didn't they should have because this was the change everyone found at Goshen High School. It was a year of expanded activity, of exciting sports' contests, of enthuastic club activity, and of improving personal relationships. Almost Anything Goes, an interschool amateur athletic contest, captured the interest ofthe student body as did convocations, job placement through the guidance department and various clubs and organizations. lntoductlon 3 1 .-- Ai ,W x I. A, ,ff . . . Awareness, perception, and beliefs, abig part of ourlives, was witnessed by Goshen High School students. We laughed and cried but we did not find ourselves alone because, through it all, we had our fellow schoolmates to share all the good and bad. Awareness- a quality of realization, knowledge, alertness, and becoming alive to something-became evident as the belief in ones self accentuated. Perception- the capacity to comprehend, to be aware, to have insight- was stressed by our administration and faculty who Introduction 4 ff Contents Introduction . . Fall . . Winter IJ at .V Spring Class Faces .. i Administration .. Groups .. J Advertising Index . . . challenged us to the point where we became more perceptive than ever. We had the opponunity to participate in a workshop which involved teachers, parents, students, and supportive help. We knew what we felt meant something to those who made the decisions which affected us. Our feelings were truly heard and this attitude prevailed through the entire school year. Beliefs-the quality of trust and confidence placed in a person or thing- was truly witnessed in many of the activities at GHS, something that was not such an important part of students' lives in the past. The individual did become important at GHS. The individual did become the center of activity. Introduction 5 H Q 1 ' 7 'A W 0 V ' I ra , , r 1L'?.'PT:x,f2 'N r , rj 5 A .' These were just a few things the students did to add spirit to GHS during Spirit Week. A new wrinkle during the week gave students the first period on Monday to decorate the halls. The Best Decorated Hall went to the Senior class which also captured the Pin the Dummy contest. Senior class President Mike Troyer had the privilege of thowing the dummy into the bonfire gather- ing which was held on the school's practice baseball field. A movie, a beauty contest, and an electric chair thrilled the student body at a Campus Life convocation held Thursday. Jaye Sleppy idressed as a girly and Kathy Deal fdressed as a boyl won the beauty contest while Jim Hammond was excuted on the chair. On Friday Pep Band members led the students through the halls to the auditorium where homecoming queen candidates and their escorts were introduced. Representing the Senior class were Nancy Hertzler and Carlyle Schlabach, Anita Holden and Steve Mishler, Sue Battles and Chris Traxler, and Jane Martilla and Brad Harris. He was also the leading ground gainer. Yoder led the defense in tackles with 62 solos and 57 assist while Cotherman dominated the rush- ing yardage, gaining 1,088. The Paul Underwood Mental Attitude Award went to Thompson. Alan Vihlkins was named Most improved. Four Redskins were picked to be on the Northem Lakes Conference team. They were Neal Yoder, offense-defense: Kevin Cotherman, offense-defenseg Tim Schwaim, defenseg and Richard Klatt, offense. The two-night production was performed in front of approxi- mately 400 spectators and grossed the Thespians Society 8350. Twenty-nine students participated in producing what many termed the best play in many years here at G.H.S. The backstage crew had their two cents worth when they reenacted the play for the benefit of the cast members at Stacy Lung's home following the Saturday night performance. Cast members also got together Friday evening at Doug Cripe's home. The play was based on the tme story ol two families, the Frank's and Van Dan's, who had to go into hiding during the Gennan occupation in Worid War Il. The play reveals how these two Jewish families coped with the situation. It was during this time, Anne Frank, then 13, kept a diary of the daily happenings of Anne Frank. After losing five of their first six games, Coach Roger Tuggle's Redskins threw it into high gear to be one of the biggest threats in the Northern Lakes Conference. Playing their best ball in the last three games of the regular season and in Sectional competiton, the Skins knocked off tough Rochester, came just two points away from Mishawaka, and fell to number seventh-rated Elkhart Central, 79-81, in double overtime. In Sectional play after shutting the door on NorthWood's Panthers, the Skins fired-up to meet the Big Blue of Elkhart Central once again. This time Goshen played the cat and mouse game to crush Central's hopes 51-50. But in the final game Concords defense forced Goshen to outside shooting while the Minutemen tore them up at the free-throwline1 and when the final buzzer sounded Concord was on top 54-49. The Skins only had left the memories of the dream they hoped to accomplish. Receiving awards for the Skins were Ken Bickel, Paul Underwood Awardg Kevin Cotherman, Most Valuable Player and Most Assists, Scott Hostetler, Defensive Award, Richard Klatt, Rebounding Award, John Conrad, Free Throw Award. Goshen's conference record was 9-5 which gave the 'Skins a tie with Wawasee. Conference action was played during the summer months in 1976. Hitting was probably the weakest part of the team but sophomore catcher Steve Swihart hammered out a .284 average followed closely by senior first baseman Bruce Kotek with a .281 average. Junior third baseman Steve Yoder finished next with a .243 aver- age. lt was defensive that gained the spotlight with the infield of Yoder, senior shortstop Scott Hostetler, senior second baseman Kirby Thompson and Kotek setting an all-time defensive record by com- mitting only 20 errors. Junior Jamie Strycker led the pitching staff with an excellent 5-1 record and a 2.10 E.Fl.A. Senior Darrel Bender was next with a 5-2 record an a 1.88 E.Fl.A. while Senior Scott Berkey had an identical record with a 2.86 E.Fl.A. Senior Chuck Looker finished with a 3-4 record and a 2.18 E.Fl.A. The Junior Varsity, coached by Bob Yenna, compiled a 5-11 regular season record. The regular season play for the 'Skins was successful, too, winning 18 and losing 9. The highlight of the season was the victory over first-ranked LaPorte in the second game of the year. ny- . n .,. .v' Scif' '--my . During Friendship week the Thespians wrote and produced a play called The Wizard of Gosh, which they performed during third period. New members were initiated at the end of May. During that day, the new initiates painted their faces as part of their initiation. Then that night, they took their pledge at the Briarwood clubhouse and signed their name to the troop number 763. David Carr and Stacy Lund were voted best Thespians. Other members included Donna Kummeth Mike Yoder, Robb Bigler, KimCuthbert, Tim Farrell. Wayne Carroll 85-68. while Gary Roosevelt ran away in its Class A division by scoring 142 points. Six records and one tie were established in Class A and Class B. For the first time in many years rain did not fall which made a perfect day for all track and field participants. Kay Preheim was crowned queen and Ernest Sample was named honorary referee. Pacing Goshen to victory were Brian Warstler and Maurie Kline who each collected 4211? points thigh in Class Bi and Neal Yoder who picked up 14 points. The three boys won their event two years in a row and Yoder bettered his old record in the 440-yard low hurdles in a time of 55.9. Coach Weaver praised Warstler, Kline, and Yoder but was quick to point out that Goshen would not have won the Class B title without a team effort. The title ended the track careers of many fine athletes in the senior class who have made their mark the past three years. pn Jaye Sleppy and Neil Miller took a break between their scheduled events. Goshen High School has completed its first Building Trades home which is located at the corner of Beckner Avenue and Greene Road. The First National Bank of Goshen financed the entire project which was headed by a corporation ol business- men inthe community. Community members on the board were President Terry Snyder, Vice-President Phil Neff, Secretary Doris Miller, Delmar Yoder, Garrett Hoogen- boom, Max Fiandt, and Flalph Gunden. The project began in August with the digging of the basement. The students, who did all the work except the digging of the basement, worked with the community lead- ers and their instructor James Hughes to complete the building in June. Helping to decorate the interior of the home was GHS's Interior Decorating class under the direc- tion of instructor Miss Norma Blair. The girls selected the color scheme and selected the carpet for the home.
