Wfe entered through new doors Into halls smelling of wax, paint, Varnish and cleaning solution. Bright hallways. new colors on the walls. Shiny new lockers in neat rows- These were a few of the wonders That awaited us beyond the yellow doors. The days flew past. Eagerly, we watched the steel skeleton That was to he the gymnasium Grow and take form To the accompaniment of thumps, crashes, hangs, The crackle of welding torches and chatter of air hammers. New science labs were created And into the spring we continued to grow. Suddenly it was june again. The last book was closed, And the last locker door shut. We paused and reflected on the departed year And marveled at the size and stature to which we had grown. -jane Hostctler 'gamer 1 74m af M 4-14 A I5-26 5 27-67 f4o5fSwSZck4 6 X- Xl Sfww ye- 95 64144 96-114 Seam Dduczug 116-119 ,4 ' menu 120-15.5 Amgmpa 156-160 3 ,Q'-fX9k 7 14 '13 , J - -,F C 'X -Qi T ' -. .n. - N ,i, A , ' - fa , ' -x ,. -x ., - f' O 4 P Q L L cc industrious ioolu rim trying out om' of thc ncw grows, 'ni If while milking down first-floor h.1ll, you happen to smell sonic- thing burning, don'r hc loo Jlgirrncd. lt iniiy only be one of the homc cconomirs girls burning ii pin ot' hispuits. Math students sometimes find themselves adrift in a sea of ratios, right angles, radicals, and regular polygons. Our mathe- matics department seeks to guide young Einsteins on to higher levels by offering such courses as algebra, geometry, and trionometry. For those who are content to budget their money and pay their taxes, such courses as general math and arithmetic are available, janet Duncan explains her solution to one of Mr. Matthews' algebra problems. c p ZH- :fa ' Now, well begin with deep knee bends. Under mystic decorations, the upperclass- men danced to the magic music of the Notre Dame Lettermen. A floor show provided additional entertainment and at eleven o'clock, Bob Rhoutsong and Sue Murphy were crowned king and queen of the prom. At twelve, the couples proceeded to the Goshen theater where they saw Holiday for Lovers, starring Carol Linley, jane Wfyman, Cliffton Webb, and Gary Crosby. After the movie, the GHS upperclassmen were entertained by the Goshen Lions Club at the Moose. Music was provided by The Sere- naders from Indianapolis. Breakfast, which was served by the Lions Club from four to five A.M,, climaxed the memorable evening-one which will be treasured for a lifetime. With stars in her eyes. Judy Kehr dreams of approaching prom night. At last the big moment arrives. Her date, Tom Veach, presents her with a lovely corsage. and they are off for a gala evening. Dancing leaves its effect, and Tom and Judy take time out for refreshments to rest their weary feet. il 'B wi I I 1 A 1 . X A 1 M in I 7 A Q - -J . - ls. Last fall's crew won eleven and lost four and were five and four in the Conference. Two seniors, Terry Clapacs and Terry Scott, and sophomore Kent Ober supplied the needed scoring power. All three took turns winning races, with Terry Clapacs being number one man most often. Ober paced the Goshen runners five times, Clapacs six, and Scott one. Of his first eight boys, Coach Clason loses Clapacs, Scott, jim Blair, Theron Taylor, and Dan Cregier. However, he has Ober, Wfesly Dye, and Bill Edson returning. BEST IN STATE: Gary Froebel's Gardfrey skims over the sticks on his way to the Class A high.hu1-die title- DOWN AND OUT: This unidentified hurdler tripped and fell during the Class A high hurdles. N 45' , f f 1 Team balance, an oversight readily admitted by opposing coach- es, and an insignificant one-sixth of a point in the pole vault all con- tributed to Elkhart's second consecu- tive Class A Goshen Relay's title. Gary Roosevelt entered a boy in too many events and the mistake was detected. Roosevelt was forced to relinquish ten points leaving Elk- hart the winner by one-sixth of a point. In Class B, Bremen needed either a first or second in the sprint med- ley relay to edge Plymouth who had totaled 52 points. Bremen won the second heat for its second con- secutive title. The top individual performance was turned in by Elkhart's Charles Umbarger who established a Fore- man Field record in the mile. His record of 4:2-1.6 minutes sliced nearly five seconds from the pre- vious mark of 4129.4 set by XY'ar- saw's Max Truex in 195-1. ' fddedffnfdd -,,., i f'- Jgx SJ 31 -R REGIONAL QUALIFIERS: Shown left to right, are trackmen Terry Clapacs, jay Miller, Ned Underwood, and Dan Cregier who qualified for the regional at Elkhart. After losing their first dual meet, the thinlies pulled out a 56-53 victory with Dave Williams scoring 8 points in a thriller with St. joseph. The highlight of the meet was when Terry Scott set a new Foreman Field record for a Goshen High School athlete in the half-mile. In their third dual meet the Skins swept four events to down the Cadets from Howe 64-45. The thinlies dropped their last three dual meets com- pleting the season with a 2-4 record. In the Elkhart match Terry Scott bettered his record time in the 880, touring the two laps in 2:O7.8 minutes. In the Eastern Conference track meet at Elk- hart, Goshen finished seventh. Those who quali- fied for the conference meet were jim Marks in the broad jump, Bud Smith in the pole vault, jay Miller in the high jump, and Dave Williams in two events, the high jump and the pole vault. In the sectional track meet Goshen finished fourth. Those who qualified for the regional were Terry Clapacs in the half-mile, jay Miller and Ned Underwood in the high-jump, and Dan Cregier in the low hurdles. 94 NOT THIS TIME: Dave Williams, who broke two poles while vaulting last spring, had better luck this time. The pitching staff, losing all its major 1959 pitchers was expected to be Goshen's weakest point. In truth, it was the teamls strongest point, despite seven defeats and only one win. Dave Guipe, leader of the field of batters at GHS, had an excel- lent batting average of 461. He was followed by Bill johnson with 352. The team average, however, was a weak 239. Although 11 players were lost by graduation, a good season is expected in 1961. :Sq- .. ff? 43 1 ' 'kv . . J xi .Q x, - X f x I A 0, .
