He guided us with the same insight and understanding he portrayed in his teaching tor twenty-five years. At the time of his death, Mr. Shanklin was head of the English De- partment and instructor of the American Literature, Speech, and Debate classes. His influence was felt through all the community as he was an active member of the Goshen Camera Club, Goshen Lions Club, Goshen Rifle and Pistol Club, and the Goshen Library Board, He was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity. As we continue through life, we will long remember Mr. Shanklin as the man under whom we learned much and who was always willing to take the time to help us. 4 PmHm'Z'gUb zO--4 L h M M SU PERINTEN DENT GOSHEN CITY SCHC Mr. Robert B. The annual campus clean-up proved to be fun and not work as they had anticipated. Miss Pat Yoder represented the Freshman class in the l955 Relays. To get the ball really rolling and to start to fill that empty treasury, the Freshmen had the concessions of the LaPorte football game. In the early spring, a combina- tion treasure-scavenger hunt and dance was held, At the close of the evening, they all met in the cafeteria for refreshments. Their party was a huge success. Later on, our campus became sparkling clean after the annual campus clean-up, which is a Freshman project. Brinklow for the past 34 years. The year i955 brought a new addition to Goshen High Schoolg this was the addition of rooms solely for the use of the music department. lt consists of an office for Mr. Brink- low, two instrument-storage rooms, one large practice room with permanent risers, and one small practice room. G. H. S. should be proud of its music department. The choir, band, orchestra, and many of our ensembles and soloists consistently win first prizes in the district and state music contests. We wish to congratulate Mr. Brinklow and his fine music department. We feel that the addition of the music rooms will make our music depart- ment even bigger and better than it has been in the past. Practice is held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the second period. Special sectionals for each instrument section are held each noon. The concert band plays all types of music from popular to classical. At the concert, one of the feature attractions is a narrative by one of the members of the band accompanied by the band. Excellent musicianship and leadership are the qualities which make our band the wonderful organization which we all know it to be. MARCHI G BA The G. H. S. marching band was under the leadership of Dave Weaver during the 1955 football season'. The band puts on a unique, half-time show at each of our home football games. Instead of going to an out-of-town game, the band decided to take part in the Purdue University High School Band Day this year. The entire band went to Purdue University in October in two buses. One hundred other bands participated with a grand total of 6,625 musicians. One of the highlights of the 1955 marching season was the for- mation of droodles with the band playing corresponding music, and the twirlers doing routines to help the audience guess the droodles. The twirlers this year were Pat Stroman, Phyllis Rowell, Judy Williams, and Virginia Champion. Kohler Champion was a big help to the band by announcing the half-time shows from the announcer's stand. The band plays for pep sessions, all the football and basketball games, and takes part in several parades each year. Students of G. H. S. and the general public often do not realize how much work and time is put into the band's playing and shows. Here is a salute to Mr. Brinklow and his Marching 60. Dave Weaver, Drum Maier. Phyllis Rowell, Pat Stroman, Virginia Champion Judy Williams. CHOIR One of the largest projects of the choir is the singing of the Messiah each year at Christmas time. The 50 voice choir also takes part in the Easter Sunrise Service which is sponsored by the Hi-Y and Sunshine clubs of GHS. Other activities include participating in both the band and orchestra concerts. The Choir Festival was held in Goshen this year with choirs of Elkhart, Laporte, and Michigan City taking part. After practicing during the day, the combined choirs gave a concert in the evening. Director ....,,,,.c. W-.- ,.,,,,,,,,,,,,., Mr. Brinklow Organisf an ,ssNorma Rockenbaugh Pianist -,, ,,,..,,. Our goal has been to pro- mote a better understanding of the Latin language and to gain a better knowledge of Roman culture and customs. Opening the book of judgment, the con- sul read the citizens' activities for the previous year. New Romans became official citizens during the ceremony in which all new mem- bers were formally admitted to the club in an Ager-Servus ceremony. The annual Saturnalia was celebrated at the Christmas Season, the Advisory Board met regularly to survey special projects and activities of the club, the club retained its membership in the State Latin Club and be- came affiliated with the National Club, other interesting features were a Mythical Trip to Delphi and the Roman Banquet when the citizens' enthusiasm reached its peak! At the close of the banquet, an evening of beauty and fascination, the Consul's verdict was read: Goal accomplished! Our Consul, Miss Shaffer. Members of the club served as guides for the P.T.A. open house, attended the spring con- vention at Mishawaka, and sold concessions at a basketball game to earn additional funds for their treasury. The purpose of Scribblers Club is to en- courage creative writing by interested stu- dents and to give constructive criticism ot their manuscripts. At the meetings, which are held once a month in the school library, manuscripts written by members are read. After the read- ing of these papers, an informal discussion is held in which the merits and imperfections are pointed out. Several new members were accepted in the organization this year. The highlight of the year was the pro- gram presented for guest night at the Eve- ning Literature Club. A progressive Christ- mas party was also enjoyed. ARSITY PERSGNNEL LARRY STRETCH ESSIG, 6' 5 center, started the basketball season slowly. He was a bit slow in jumping up and getting the re- bound. Later in the Ft. Wayne North Side game, he showed the G. H. S. fans that he could use his height to good advantage in holding down Dick Bergotf the 6' IO center from Ft. Wayne. CAM MC DOUGALL, a very steady Sen- ior ball player, showed that he could hit from any place on the floor when battling visiting teams. He liked very much to dribble the ball-something a center seldom has a chance to do. GENE INBODY, 5' 10 Senior guard, seemed to always know where the ball was going as he was usually successful in breaking up three or four of the opposing team's passes. INDIANA Spring, 1956 Dear Readers: On behalf of the 1955-56 Crimson staff, l would like to thank all the people who have helped to make this book possible. First of all, we thank Mr. Paul Retrum and Mr, Wayne Atkinson of lnter-Collegiate Press Company for their help and interest in our book. Mr. and Mrs, Donald Snyder have taken our faculty, senior and club pictures for us. They have been very patient in taking the pictures we wanted. Mr. Dennis Siegerfoos, photographer for the Goshen News, has interrupted his busy schedule to come out and take pictures around our school and action shots at our school activities. We are most appreciative of the efforts of these two photographers who have helped us secure good pictures for our yearbook. Mr, and Mrs. Ned Lacey have assisted us greatly by advising and developing the candid pictures which our own staff photo- graphers have taken. To the advertisers we extend a hearty thanks for their patronage. Their loyalty and assistance has made our book possible. Mr. Starr and all the faculty have been very helpful to us. Without their cooperation, we would have been unable to get much of our material. To Mrs. Berniece Dwyer we are very grateful for her outstanding guid- ance, patience, and joviality. We have appreciated her staying with us through the long hours we have spent after school planning and editing our book. Now for my own personal acknowledgments: Thanks, Kohler for being a wonderful business manager. Also, l have really appreciated all the help and interest of the staff and of all the other kids who dropped in at our Crimson-Members-Only corner. We had loads of fun laughing and working together this past year.
