Christian liberal arts college located in Goshen, Indiana - Goshen College adapted to the unfolding present for a year marked with such changes as a dorm closing, a newly-active disarmament group and a grant for a new computer system, These are a few of the highlights which characterized 1983 as a year of subtle change. The empty rooms and halls were transformed by plans to convert High Park into a bookstore and computer facility. Funds from a Title lll grant covered the pur- chase of new computer equipment, leaving Ken Kauffman, Juanita Yoder 'kan ,H Y r is, l the college with more funds for structural renovation aided by a Lilly grant. With the computer center on first floor and the book- store on second, the top two floors became available for departments needing room to expand, Social work, sociology and commu- nication were among those considered. -hh Y' 1 al i l Renovation work began early in May to create space for the two VAX 11!75O com- puters scheduled to arrive in mid-July. The new computers will provide approximately twice the computing power of the college's current model, while occupying less space, said Computer Services Director Ed C. SST: exploring new lifestyles SST assignments transported students to Belize, Costa Fiica, Haiti, Honduras and China this year, Fourteen weeks of intensive language and culture study supplemented the more de- manding, rewarding task of living within a differ- ent culture. After seven weeks together in the capital cities, students in Central America and Haiti separated to pursue different field place- ments, many times out of reach of electrical wires and every-other-day letters. China SSTers experienced a different type of SST. They lived together on the campus of Sichuan Provincial Teachers' College and taught English classes from beginning to ad- vanced students. Learning to over- come the language barrier, eating unfamiliar food, communicating with a new family, and living in a strange city challenged students to examine their own cultural backgrounds more closely. Accepting the differences became one ofthe most important things an SSTer learned, often the hard way. Students in Haiti were given the option of studying either French or Creole after extended debate among language professors, former Haiti SSTers and Haitian students on campus. .omni Dave Kauffman, China, Fall 1982 - nw .-+,.v'Qf..', M - . From catching sharks to cooking meals, from patrolling a site of shoreline to snorkelling in deeper water - the two-and-a-half weeks on site are full of activity. Because students work for four credit hours, the work day often doesn't end until 10 or 11 p.m. This year, Marine Biology students stayed in motel rooms or efficiencies at Lime Tree Bay Resort, not far from the work sites. A gift of land in 1982 enabled the college to consider building its own facility near Layton on Long Key. To all of these vocations and avocations Sara brought magnificant wit, encompassing faith, and love that embraced everyone but the pompous and the proud, She was a person who took as much plea- sure in the success of a first-year student as in the poetic conceits of George Herbert. She derived as much joy from a hemstitched tablecloth as from a well-turned phrase, and her delight was equally great in the apt Scripture reference and the right word for a parody. She did not suffer fools gladly, and was capable of reducing the pretentious to sputtering incoherence. Excellence, fullness of presence, and class made of Sara's goodnessan extraordi- nary gift. She felt deeply, but avoided senti- ment like a cockroach. She gave fully but understood those who could or for the mo- ment would nol give. She never demanded of others that which she was not prepared to offer herself, pressed down and running over. Sara K. was a great lady, and incompara- ble and dedicated teacher, a matchless Vic- torian, wife and mother. She would be the last to saysog but then, we have disagreed about many things, and I expect, some day, that she will insist on contradicting me. I look forward to that day with glee. SN'- ss. gr , My - - JE wvuuui' -av X, Ks I ru 4 -w lllillfzi ll fb Alta Hertzler was an accomplished fiber artist. She understood well the complexities of the interactions of the elements compos- ing the warp and woof, ln a similar way, her personal gifts became important strands in the fabric of life in the college community. A strong commitment to the values of sim- plicity and integrity guided her choices in life. Quality was to be revered over quantity, Whether it was food, clothing, or furnishings, she savored simple beauty, Alta was idealistic and had high expecta- tions for herself and others, Whether as a result of her own shortcomings or those of others, she felt disappointment within herself when the ideal was not achieved. On the other hand, she readily expressed her ela- tion with her own accomplishments or those of her family, students and friends. Alta was a beautiful person, ln her art, she expressed the grace, dignity, honesty, and integrity which was characteristic of her life. Artificiality had no place in her vocabulary or the environments she created. The au- thenticity she brought to all of Iife's exper- iences was deeply rooted in a strong Chris- tian faith. The motif of the cross appeared in many of her works - symbolically drawing the viewer into the experience of light, salva- tion, forgiveness, or joy Alta Hertzler 1937-1982 Editors note Excerpted from an essay by Catherine Mumaw, appearing in Record, Dec 10, 1982 L 4 Administration '.
