The Jazz Band was another significant part of the performance schedule this year, as shown in the popularity of their concerts. The annual Concerto-Aria concert hosted five student soloists. Suzanne Gross, Doug Bomberger, Sally Oyer, Beth Smucker and Rita Yoder performed with the college orchestra. The department graduated 18 majors, an all- time high. Increased enrollment in classes was attributed in part to special SST units such as those in Poland, Germany and China. Gerhard Reimer, professor of German, returned to Germany to renew a German studies program. The program was last active in the spring of 1972. If all goes well, the department expects to begin another German study unit in the spring of 1981. E F55 tw: 1' i rt S . The industrious drama sector performed several fine plays- The Lark, Impromptu, The Proposal, Emperor's New Clothes, The Dumb Waiter, To Walk in the Way, Show of Hands, No Exit, and the Sign Language group put on Show of Hands. An added attraction was a dinner theater production of Arms and the Man. In December, Professor Stephen Shank delivered a dramatic interpretation of Revalation which was so well received that he gave an encore performance in the spring. The broadcasting sector of the department, WGCS, honored its founder at a coming-of- age celebration during alumni weekend. The station also seized that opportunity to christen a new, higher powered stereo transmitter installed this year. The Record and Maple Leaf staffs also learned to use new equipment. A Compugraphic system, coordinated with the information Services office, allowed students to set their own type. The division introduced and pushed for the passage of minors rather than co-majors. Now the division is able to offer additional minors which were previously unavailable. Enthusiasm continued for the Urban Life Center program, located in Chicago, which provides for Social Work Practicum opportunities. This program allows students to experience work in an urban setting. Interest was also growing for the Family Life program, as well as for Mennonite History classes. The division was also able to include history as a future general education requirement. The S247,000 grant from the National Institute of Aging allowed for the purchase of an electron microscope which arrived this spring. Jacobs' research deals with the aging process of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Grove will be the principal operator of the elctron microscope for this research as well as for his own on fungi. Students are able to work as assistants and the department hopes that eventually a class on electron microscopy and other research methods will be arranged. Unlike other majors which are less tangible, most classes in home economics are geared at teaching practical skills. Meal Management, Clothing Construction and Consumer Strategies prepare graduates for work in extension and education, where they pass these skills on to others. In addition, a home economist learns less tangible but important skills. Child development, the role of the family in society, conservation of natural resources, and healthy interpersonal relationships broaden the student's awareness and effectiveness in community. Well-known sociologist Elise Boulding presented a lecture this winter on the role of the family in society. She stressed the significance of the family in the worId's future and discussed other issues relevant to home economics. VIKING ...Q-v, 2' Rose Hooley B. Kathy Harder, Shari Swartzendruber DIVISION IV-Bible, Religion 81 Philosophy Professors Resign Over Controversy Toward the end of this school year, Bible Professors Diane and Dennis MacDonald both submitted their resignations, because of a disagreement voiced by the constituency over Biblical interpretation. A special forum was called by students to voice protests and to raise questions. Although the MacDonalds chose to leave, many students were skeptical of the process involved. Both Dennis and Diane were very active on campus while they were here. With student help, Dennis compiled a semantic field index of the Nag Hammadi Codices, wrote a Pinchpenny book and led the Christian Life and Renewal Week. Diane became the first woman recipient of the C. Henry Smith Peace Lectureship, which she will be working on next year. The new program calls for each junior to assume a case family with a pregnancy during the first trimester. Students quickly learn to apply classroom theories in their care of children and adults. The main thrust of the program has been redirected at health promotion. A boost came to the department when the National League for Nursing approved the changes and granted continuing accreditation for the maximum time period of eight years. Burkholder visited in January with officials of Sichuan Provincial Teachers College, where the students will be located, and received approval for the exchange April 29. 'This is a very unusual opportunity, and it will represent the first exchange of its kind, Burkholder said. The program will involve twenty students teaching English at the university in China, and eight Chinese professors studying in Goshen. Because of the importance and delicacy of this new exchange, SST officials and college administrators conducted a careful screening process to select the twenty students for the fall group. Professor Atlee Beechy was selected as SST leader. Going to China with a group of undergraduates will be a real breakthrough, Burkholder said. This first attempt is crucial-it must work well, or it won't happen again. Burkholder continued to explain China's motivation for the exchange, stating that it is looking for technology and friends from the Western world. Goshen College's motivation is the same as for other SST units: to learn from and about another culture, as well as to provide a service. Students in China will be mainly involved in teaching English at the university. SST units this year were located in Belize, Costa Rica, Haiti and Honduras. Nicaragua was abandoned as an SST location last year because of the dangerous political situation there. V President Burkholder holds a press conference to announce the China Exchange. tt M? Although the duo was eliminated in the first round, Coach Harold Yoder said they played very well against a nationally-ranked team. Yoder called his '79 team one of three excellent tennis teams in the Mid-Central College Conference. The Leafs finished third in the final MCC standings. Sophomore Steve Yoder posted the best singles season with a 9-1 record. Next year's team will miss seniors Cassim, Doug Smucker and Stan Oyer. The women's team was inexperienced this year and had a difficult, but enjoyable season, according to Coach Joy Hess. The netters finished the season with a 2-6 record. Plank was undefeated in dual meet competition. He broke a school record for the five-mile run with a time of 26:24. Both Mark and Kevin earned a place on the All-District 21 Cross-Country Team. Coach John lngold called them the best, youngest duo in District 21 lngold commended the rest of the team as well, stating that this was the first year Goshen has had six runners under 30 minutes. The team finished third in the Mid-Central Conference standings, which ties a previous high. The men's track team was hindered by the size of their squad. Spread over winter and a spring term, the untimely track season attracted only seven participants. The Leafs finished fourth in the conference, led once again by Plank and returning Ietterman David Rusterholtz. In two meets Plank swept first place in the 10,000-, 5000-, and 1500-meter runs. He was running close to 10 miles per meet. Mark Plank, Kevin Leinbach GOLF Veteran Views Bright Future Junior Dave Weaver, the oldest golfer on the team, predicts a bright future for the young squad, as characterized by this season. The golfers improved throughout the season, winning two of their final three matches. ln the last contest they came within a single stroke of victory and within five strokes of a school record. At the end of the season, however, the overall record was 2-4. A r , - ,j. Brent Troyer lan . ,rw W-W v.. I've never had a team that worked harder or had a better attitude. The hard work and attitude paid off when the Leafs finished the season in third place in the Mid-Central College Conference, although their 4-4 record reflected some ups and downs.
