During the last two summer trimesters there has been a special SST unit in Poland. This has drawn the attention not only of the students and professors involved, but of many Polish people as well. Language instructors, lectur- ers, guides, dorm mates, and fellow workers have come into Contact with the program. ln March 7975 POLAND magazine published an article on the unit, including statements made by some of the students. Excerpts of some of these appear below. just about the only thing I really knew about Poland when I came was where it was located on the map and the name of the capital. During my stay here I have come to admire, respect, and love this nation and the people that make it. Already I am scheming ways with which I will return some day. My experience here has given me much to work with, especially in the United States where the biggest impression of the Poles seems to be gained by rude jokes which have no logical basis. Since I've been here I've developed more affection for my own country. Before I left, bitterness was slowly building in me, which isn't good for anyone. Now I realize that I need to have a spirit of understanding for my own country as well as other coun- tries. I realize now how much a native country means to me. I respect the people of Poland. I cannot fully comprehend the hor- ror of their role in World War II, but I have seen how this nation sur- vived and rebuilt with strength. The Poles are a very decent and feeling people, very sensitive to the needs of others. I feel safe here in War- saw, very unlike my feelings in large American cities. janice Martin Brent W. Sprunger
