During1975, two men, immeasurably valuable in the growth of Goshen College, died. S. C. Yoder and Ernest E. Miller served as presidents at Goshen College during its growing and stabalizing years, Dr. Yoder from 1924 to 1940, and Dr. Miller from 194Ot01954, Both men served the Mennonite church as mission leaders, educators, administrators and church pastors. Their lives became closely entwined with the Goshen College community, with the goals that the College sought to gain and the standards it struggled to uphold. Sanford C, Yoder reorganized the college and reopened it in 1924. During his tenure at Goshen Col- lege four buildings were erected-Coffman Hall, Kulp Hall, the Health Center, and Memorial Library. He wrote several books and became quite interested in the sport scene at GC during his later years. Ernest E. Miller's term as president began shortly before World War Il. His proposed program of train- ing young men for civilian service instead of military service became a maior contribution to the church's non-resistant stand during the war. His tremendous sense of humor and his concern for the students became his trademark which many would remember him for.

Untitled Times just get mean, sometimes, you know There I was, late again, Cutting across the grass, 1 Notebook burps And there's papers everywhere in The ravenous spring breeze- l'm grabbing by handfuls To stuff them back in, while the crowds walk by Some greetings. Damn, said l, next guy that asks how l'm doing gets busted in the mouth Well, along comes this guy they call God, Briefcase at his side, hair combed, the whole bit this shirt tail was tucked ini His smile as bright as the moon He says, Hi, how are you doing? Well, a man's only as good as his word, lt's been that way a lot. Pau! Conrad Dark Embroidery You go out the door and down the street along night-vaulted deciduous tunnels: I sit with my book. You go out the door and down the street on a black clicking black midnight bicycle: lsit with my book. You go out alone and the door and the street and I are drawn along behind you, as needle pulls thread. Phil Diller lfrom Subject to Changel Winter all the Same The car was slow in growing warm, and conversation too was cold. Our thoughts and words would take the form of exhaled, frozen breath, and hold our time-worn friendship in the cloud. The radio played nothing new, and and even silence was too loud. With little else to say or do, we found the bar and drank our beer, then left the place when it seemed right. The air was pure and winter clear, and fields were touched with silver light. The trees seemed set with precious stone, and black earth broke from rippled snow. Some magic had been loosed and grown To give the earth a frigid glow. But it was winter all the same. There may be beauty in the cold, But who can really fix the blame for frozen beauty grown so old? jay Troyer lfrom Subject to Changel
