Created every race of people of one stock, to inhabit the vvhole earth 's surface. Acts 77:24-26 iNEBj lust what are you, Goshen College? Where is it you're going? ls your goal really a definable one? Can what you are possibly be put into words? People sure do try-hovv many well- meant words have been written and spoken in the effort? Some come close to capturing a little of your spirit-but just a little, only affording a glimpse of the multi-faceted entity that is Goshen. You can't be described in the words of a single person, because no one can understand and really represent the motley mixture of personalities that are responsible for making you whatever it is that you are. You include so many people from such different places-their collective expe- rience is amazing, and you go out to so many places too, places often elusive to those who remain on the campus. But if you take all of these essential peo- ple, the scholars and the clowns, serene and perpetually lost, the earnest ones and those 'wholly irreverent, and you calendar their year through their own words and images, maybe then you can come close to expressing just what Goshen is. With camera and with pen, vve tried to record the year for you. Vg A R255 1 WL fi V it o, n 0 . . .Now that the initial excitement of being back at GC again after months of travel has worn off, school is starting to seem unreal, irrevelant, and at times almost useless. I know that much of what I'm learning may be used later, but I yearn to be doing something that brings results and satisfaction now. At one time ambition would have been suf- ficient energy and reward, but Goshen Gol- lege, much of education, humanity, and sometimes even life itself is getting to be old hat and has lost its mystique. I see more and more that mystique is the stuff of ambition. january journal entry Dear Mary I ve been back in Goshen for two weeks now at times at has seemed like an eternity wishing I would have stayed in Iapan or South Korea I was so anxious to return but now I must adjust to a new life here one that I did not expect or prepare for My old friends are gone graduated moved on to other locations New faces have taken their places I keep reminding myself of the happi ness I had found here in Goshen before I am sure if I keep searching tearing down walls and baring myself open to the yoy and heartache of new relation ships that my life in Goshen will again take on a positive meaning Meanwhile I m searching through the rubble I , . S. C. Yoder and Ernest E. Miller served as presidents at Goshen College during its growing and stabalizing years, Dr. Yoder from 1924 to 1940, and Dr. Miller from 194Ot01954, Both men served the Mennonite church as mission leaders, educators, administrators and church pastors. Their lives became closely entwined with the Goshen College community, with the goals that the College sought to gain and the standards it struggled to uphold. Sanford C, Yoder reorganized the college and reopened it in 1924. During his tenure at Goshen Col- lege four buildings were erected-Coffman Hall, Kulp Hall, the Health Center, and Memorial Library. He wrote several books and became quite interested in the sport scene at GC during his later years. Ernest E. Miller's term as president began shortly before World War Il. His proposed program of train- ing young men for civilian service instead of military service became a maior contribution to the church's non-resistant stand during the war. His tremendous sense of humor and his concern for the students became his trademark which many would remember him for. Phil Diller lfrom Subject to Changel Winter all the Same The car was slow in growing warm, and conversation too was cold. Our thoughts and words would take the form of exhaled, frozen breath, and hold our time-worn friendship in the cloud. The radio played nothing new, and and even silence was too loud. With little else to say or do, we found the bar and drank our beer, then left the place when it seemed right. The air was pure and winter clear, and fields were touched with silver light. The trees seemed set with precious stone, and black earth broke from rippled snow. Some magic had been loosed and grown To give the earth a frigid glow. But it was winter all the same. There may be beauty in the cold, But who can really fix the blame for frozen beauty grown so old? jay Troyer lfrom Subject to Changel Naomi Limorwt with National Park. During the last two summer trimesters there has been a special SST unit in Poland. This has drawn the attention not only of the students and professors involved, but of many Polish people as well. Language instructors, lectur- ers, guides, dorm mates, and fellow workers have come into Contact with the program. ln March 7975 POLAND magazine published an article on the unit, including statements made by some of the students. Excerpts of some of these appear below. just about the only thing I really knew about Poland when I came was where it was located on the map and the name of the capital. During my stay here I have come to admire, respect, and love this nation and the people that make it. Already I am scheming ways with which I will return some day. My experience here has given me much to work with, especially in the United States where the biggest impression of the Poles seems to be gained by rude jokes which have no logical basis. Since I've been here I've developed more affection for my own country. Before I left, bitterness was slowly building in me, which isn't good for anyone. Now I realize that I need to have a spirit of understanding for my own country as well as other coun- tries. I realize now how much a native country means to me. I respect the people of Poland. I cannot fully comprehend the hor- ror of their role in World War II, but I have seen how this nation sur- vived and rebuilt with strength. The Poles are a very decent and feeling people, very sensitive to the needs of others. I feel safe here in War- saw, very unlike my feelings in large American cities. janice Martin Brent W. One of those in Goshen Ind. is Goshen College the president of which Dr. J. Lawrence Burkholder a distin- guished theologian leads an institution committed to a tradition of scholarship and Christian values. And Mr. Speaker I take particular pride in noting that my mother is a grad- uate of Goshen College. Recently the Goshen News editorially saluted' Goshen College for its contribu- tions to the local community and I would like to share this editorial with my colleagues: Gos!-IBN COLLEGE CON'rnlBU'rIoNs 'ro Us Many of us are very aware that Goshen College is a nne institution of higher learn- ing here ln our community but we don't really know much about the impact the col- lege has on our economy. We may be aware that the college brings cultural olferlngs such as art exhibits, lec- tures, concerts and recitals to our com- munity. Some of us have tickets to the lec- ture-muslc series. The college offers courses during the day and evening for persons wishing to continue their education library privileges to the serious user student vol- unteers ln a host of community helping agencies, and student labor for occasional peak work periods of local business and man- ufacturing firms. But -many of .us aren't aware that the greater part of Goshen College's 84.76 mil- lion budget is spent in Elkhart County for goods and services. And we may not know that 70 per cent of this money to support this budget comes from outside our geo- graphic region. We also may not know that the college employs 350 people. This expenditure of this large sum of money may not seem to mean much if you're not ln business, but lt does. The money the college spends for goods of many kinds to build and operate its faculties Ls spent with firms that pay a blg share of county property taxes each year. Students spend lots of dol- lars here in buying clothes keeping their cars on the road and in our restaurants. These businesses are all an important part of our community. William W. Jellerna in The Study of In- dependent Hlgher Education in Indiana, states A college reaps many practical busi- ness beneiim for its community, It creates jobs by employing people to teach and ad- minister. It purchases goods of many kinds to build and operate its facilities. It attracts students and visitors from near and far. These people spend money in the college community-money that might not other- wise have been spent there. Furthermore the ultimate economic con- sequences of spending are greater than the original impetus. Recipients of the Hrst- round expenditures also spend part of the money. Each successive round of receipts and expenditures creates an added impact-lt generates new incomes and job opportunities that would not otherwise have materialized. Based on Jellemas research formula and the colleges 84.76 million 1975 budget GCs Hrst-round figure for outlays ln this com- munity this year total 53.2 million. This rep- resents expendltures for day-to-day opera- tions and money spent by faculty, staff, stu- dents and visitors. In terms of economic impact on the com- munity, the local multiplier' indicates an aggregate effect of 34.48 million because some of the money is spent here twice. The 350 persons employed by Goshen Col- lage support about 660 jobs in the commu- n ty. Based on budget formula, the college sup- porting stan spends a1,010,000, the faculty staff spends Sl,360,000, students spend 8770,- 000 and visitors spend S-140000. Of these totals, 90 per cent is spent in this commu- n y. Many of us are more economy minded now that so much mention ls made of inflation, recession, cost of living ilgures, unemploy- ment etc, This statistical report on real expenditures here by the Goshen College community may help us realize that the college ls very important to all of us ln an economic way, to say nothing of the cultural offering to the area And we might also say that most of the statf and students at GC are solid citizens who contribute a great deal simply by being themselves and participating in the everyday llfe of our community. There's no monetary index on this factor but we're con- vinced they make our community a better place ln which to live. C 'X ': . . 5 if o f . Sa . 1? Rebecca Caudill Schlabach Lynn Lehman Terri Plank Glenn Buller Steve Gill Finals are over' One small book report yet and this term will be history Roughest term of college Il but finished I sober realizing what this term has cost how much its changed me as I went over and put Vivaldi s Four Season on the stereo a few minutes ago I felt downright odd doing something like that Such things used to be important, natural and every day, and now it almost takes an effort! Although I was aware of the pressure and discipline this term, I never felt any real changes in attitudes. It all happened so slowly and unnoticeably. It's really hard now to imag- ine a leisurely day in which to decide if I feel like doing this orthat. Perhaps this term has been most damaging in that I never had time to process things happening to me. l've been bombarded from the time I arrived to this moment-with nary a second to think and rest.
