Maple Leaf 1971 Goshen College Goshen, Indiana L K H .- QKL65 XLT U Living to Learn Despite its placid quietude, GC is a battlefield where life and death struggle to overcome each other, and people, leaves, and little black squirrels... We have come searching-aching, grasping, dying to live. 'I went to the woods, writes Henry David Thoreau, . . . to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not 1ived. 5 A. Gish We are all Thoreaus, caught in an intense struggle to find ourselves. Our goals may be less well defined and our woods far less secluded, but our search for life is the same, and is, as was Thoreau's, ironically complex. A new trimester brings with it new resolutions and anticipations of discovery that shatter in the hollow emptiness of a meaningless course required for credit hours. Enrollment goes down as tuition rises and job shortages threaten graduates. Art Gish challenges us with radical discipleship. We plan Come and See Chapels and, looking inside ourselves, find nothing. We fear our own emptiness and insecurity. V--I' 'Y 11 B Qbelowj: A. Smucker's tennis team also wins a league crown. D. Swartzen- druber QBD, E. Lehman, I. Lehman, T. Lehman, I. Lind, S. Miller, F. Swartzendruber, G. Swartzendruber, and D. Troyer fashion a 6-0 loop record and take the confer- ence toumey. A 4-3 decision over Grace in the final match of the year assures the Leafs of the Mid-Central championship. , LL flower leftj: D. Kennell, P. Broacldus, D. Yost, M. Bartel n.mam n.. We ache to be loved, to interact, and to find warmth in the association of others. Then we discover that unlocked rooms are vulnerable and trust comes easier when we carry keys around in our pockets. The new kiln blows our first ceramics to pieces during firing. A tennis match, in spite of hours of practice, results in defeat The struggle for perfection is exhausting. We form committees to discuss, committees to brainstorm, committees to investigate, and committees to form committees. We report lifeless decisions and seek to legislate spiritual renewal. In an intellectual way we love, and think, now I am loving-or am I? And if we find we aren't, we figure out a better way of doing it. C fcenteryl. Kauffman, I. Ebersole, R. Liechty, I. Cook In discussing the grading system, standards, and the basis of Campus Church membership, run in weary circles and prove nothing but the fallibility of words. We question, criticize, and dissect ourselves to pieces. Then we strive to put the pieces back together like a child musing over a broken toy. we The quest defeats us. We weaken in our struggle for life and gawk in despair at the awesome magnitude of our dilemna. By mid November the pressure hits and grades and papers drive us into a frantic scramble to keep up with the world. After page 372 brains turn to pulp and cease to function. Except a grain of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone, says Iesus, but if it die it bringeth forth much fruit. Life's mystery unfolds. We die and find what we had been searching for all along. We forget that we are being the church and the church lives. We admit our insecurities and find patient empathizing acceptance. We bring our frailty to Word groups and receive strength. GPA and course requirements are lost in the joyous discovery of an unplanned snackshop dialogue. The pulse of life explodes into childlike freedom. We drop the inhibitions of intellectual reasoning and feel the throbbing rhythm of a song. C: I. Kuhnsg LR: D. Rheinheimer LTU Living to Serve The pieces begin to fall together. We cease trying to be, and reaching out beyond ourselves to Christ, we find our being. It is the dawning of a new day. The dorm is deathly quiet. Midnight scuffle has retreated into motionless forms of bedding. Dust filters undisturbed through slanted rays of sunlight. Time reverberates, sends dissheveled heads groveling deeper into warm pillows, and jangles on. Life awakens with a splash of water, a feeble hello from inside a washcloth and the music of flushing johns. Look for yourself, says C. S. Lewis, and you will find in the long run only hatred, despair, ruin, loneliness, rage, and decay. But look for Christ and you will find Him, and with Him everything else thrown in. .- - - -- V - - x -.533-rwi.'.-g-rx-7.g. .33 ..g' ww,-. -Jr: 1 - 1' af-if.: -4. -,q My ,0i,.-3.14-..3,:g,, s.
