How many lines canl have? ls this abbreviated? Who's this, and where did the reporter find this odd number? Record meant words everywhere--open dic- tionaries, copy readers checking, typists decipher- ing scrawls and symbols. lt meant the combination of facts and ideas, and thoughts put down on paper. Particularly at the beginning of the year, when editors were strangers to their work, there were decisions to make and then decisions to change. There were Records to told, deadlines to meet, and always the next issue to think about. WORK AND YIELD for the Athletic Field. With this motto students and faculty put away their books for two days of manual labor October 13-14. Added incentive was provided by an anonymous philanthropist, who promised to match student earnings up to S8,000. Blisters and strained muscles were almost forgotten when Earl Schwartzendruber, chairman of the Work Drive Committee, presented President Mininger the check The top of the thermometer had been reached, and even passed by a few dollars. Although work was not begun on the athletic field immediately, construction on the Arts Build- ing fbelowj provided tangible evidence of planned expansion. Work Drive was only one of the activities spon- sored bythe Young Peoples' Christian Association. Under the direction of President Wilmer Rutt, six commissions engineered visitation, outings, dinner- nights and prayer fellowships. A new responsibility came when student Sunday-School classes were turned over by the College congregation to the YPCA. ln addition to President Rutt, other members of the YPCA executive committee tbottom leftj were: Geneva Swartzendruber, vice-president, Wilma Kaufman, secretary, James A. Miller, Treasurer. x
