To rest awhile, Keep no regret A comrade soul For trodden trails, And deep content- Adventure lurks But some, a star Around each bend. Calls down the way. No rest is theus But lonely days And foreward trails. So take the road Across the hill That leads thru deep, Windy valleys. Dona Belle Hepler The class of 1935 has felt with the author of this poem the spirit of adventure, of a searching after the deeper things. It was in the fall of 1931 that fifty-three freshmen came to Goshen College because they felt that here they might realize some of their secret longings after truth. To us, this year was the beginning of the small road . Marvin Hostetler was president of the class and Professor Smith was chosen as class sponsor. Some of our fellows did not return in the fall of 1932, while a few new ones joined our little band. Marvin Hostetler and Professor Smith were again our guides. New discoveries were made, steeper hills and deeper valleys were encountered. Although we numbered only twenty-two in our third year of trav- eling, we were strong and resolute in spirit. This year is famous in our memories for such happy experiences as our Junior Jump and the banquet that we gave to the Seniors. Roy Umble was our guide during this lap of the pilgrimage. And now we came to our last year, thirty of us! Levi Hartzler, our president, led us safely through the hills and valleys of this to new planes of thought and experience. Our trail has ended here, but really it has just begun. For learning continues through life and the desire for the truth is eternal. Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. Often they rested from their labors and spent together evenings of fellowship andfun. Before disbanding for the first time, they spent a happy day beside a cool, sparkling lake. After having rested for a short time, the members of the band re- assembled. Although fewer in number than before, they still found them- selves an unusually large group, and felt themselves more closely united than before. This time, with Levi Hartzler as captain, they took up their quest with new hopes, new aspirations, and new tasks. The digging was very similar to that of their previous experience. The musicians, artists, debaters, and athletes continued to cheer them as they bent over their work. Some of the group who shared a common place of abode formed a circle of their own, thereby learning to know one another more perfectly. Before disbanding the second time, they paused for a day to ramble through the woods of the Limberlost. A third time the group came together. Some had taken into their charge the leadership of tiny hands digging earnestly in the fields of Knowledge in other regions. Some had transferred to other lands. Under the leadership of Karl Massanari, they travelled to fields farther beyond. Still the bold letters of their motto spurred them onward. They concentrated more than before upon their chosen tasks, ever digging deeper. New burdens were placed upon their shoulders. But still lighter songs ascended from their lips, for now they had tasted deeply of the joy of living and of serving. Shared ex- periences continued to bind them together more tightly. And again came the time for parting. As they peered into the future, they realized that the next joining of hearts and hands would be the last. However, they rejoiced to think that it would also bring them to their goal. Dean Harold Bendei was the gu1de they wanted, and they succeeded in gaining his acceptance. But they found they could not continue to climb without stopping for rest. So occasionally they stopped and enjoyed themselves. They had a taffy pull, and when they reached their guide's cabin they stopped for a party. One day they took a whole day off to play. lVhen they were about one fourth way up the mountain it became so warm and they were so tired that they decided to take three months vacation during the hot season and continue their climb when the weather was again cooler and they were refreshed. When they started climbing again in the fall of 1934 they discovered that not all seventy intended to continue to the top of the mountain. The new leaders were Dwight Yoder, Ira Amstutz, Lorene Rocke, and William Friesen. Their guide was back again on duty, ready to advise them as they continued their upward climb. They stopped one evening for a Weenie roast, and had two parties in cabins to which their guide had led them. This year they were much more experienced in climbing Mt. College Education so they proceeded with fewer difficulties. They could see a new group starting at the bottom, and they remembered when they had started a year before. They saw two groups higher up the mountain. One was almost at the top. They longed for the time when they, too, would reach their destination. ' Thelma Hostetler Dwight Yoder ,,,,, ............. The second week-end we were here was particularly eventful. We were entertained at the thimble or stag parties and the Get Acquaintedn social. The following week we experienced our first house meetings and Faculty tea and were introduced to literary societies. The next week-end our faculty committee of Miss Boyer, Professor Smith, and Dr. Bender sponsored our first party. Here we first became aware of the talent in our class. ' K .H f 5 - K . yr , . . . x The beginning of November we organized our class and gave our first public program, an after dinner program. Do you remember our German Band, ladies sextet, male quartet, and Xylophone soloist? These and others of our classmates appeared in many other public programs. Just before the beginning of the second semester we had another party. This time the main feature was a scavenger hunt for red boards, old boxes, chicken feathers and horse hairs. On a trip to Michigan, between semesters, Paul Miller sustained a fractured thigh in an automobile accident. We were all anxious for his speedy recovery, and were happy to see him in the dining hall by the end of March. We have not yet recovered from the sadness at the passing of Herbert Wenger. We again extend our sympathy to his family. Our class gained numerous honors in extra-curricular activities. A large squad answered Professor Umble's call for debaters. A and B teams were chosen to meet the sophs late in November. In close debates the A team lost and the B team won. Our class was well represented on the intercollegiate squad. Our class set its greatest records in athletics. Gne must mention Dwight Schrock and the kitten ball season. At the beginning of the basketball season four teams were organized. Ralph Greener became cap- tain of the men's A teamg Ralph Gerber, of the B teamg Lorene Yoder, of the women's Ang and Myrtle Schnell, of the B team. The A teams were quite successful. The men's A team tied for third place at the end of the season, and swept through the tournament to take all honors. The women's team easily held first place throughout the Se2.SO1'1. In this group fifteen different congregations were repre- sented, including five states: Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, and New York. The students came in behalf of their interest in religious activities and to prepare themselves for greater avenues of service. The Sunday School was one of the chief interests of the students. Hence, most of the students enrolled in the Teacher Training course. There were three committees organized to take care of the various activities of our Bible School. The religious committee arranged for the conjoint prayer meetings which were held every W ednesday. The literary every Friday evening was looked after by the social committee. They also took care of programs which were given at various places during the term. There was also a publicity committee which published a Short Term newspaper. Short Term closed January 31st, but this did not close our study of Christian service. We left Goshen College with a new interest and deeper zeal in all things spiritual. Shipshewana, Indiana I The Bible School of Goshen College is filling a very important place in the school as well as in the church which fosters the institution. Ever 'T since the beginning of the college this department was patronized by a il considerable number of students who have since given loyal service to the i' church at home and in the Mission field. This year again there was some work offered above the collegiate f level. These courses covered the material that is usually offered in the is second year of the regular seminary course. A number of students took ' . . . , 1 this work. In addition there was a very liberal patronage of the Christian iii Workers Course. A larger number of students than usual took this work El .ggi and interest seems to be on the increase. -i It is the aim of the Administration to make this department one of the most popular and useful in the college. The need of Bible study is apparent everywhere. Young people are being educated and trained in all the arts and sciences, but our knowledge and training in the Scriptures 3+ have not increased correspondingly. Courses are added, Curriculums are revised and strengthened, and instructors are making a better preparation 'ff for their work. It is hoped that the Bible School of Goshen will continue to be a real asset to the cause of Christ in this world. President Sanfoxd Calx in Xodex , e ,e.li93i? W. C. A. The motto of the Young Women's Christian Association for many years has been To know Christ and to make Him known. As an organ- ization on the campus of Goshen College our first concern is that every young woman may know this life and may live it more abundantly. More than that, we are interested in those outside our immediate group. We Witness for Christ every possible opportunity we have, thereby learning to know our Master better ourselves and also making Him known to others. But we feel the call to carry this witness, not only in Jerusalem and in all Judea, but also to the uttermost parts of the earth. Even though our material contributions to foreign mission work may be meager, and although not many of us can labor in these fields in person, neverthe- less, we are definitely interested in the problems of the missionaries. Treasurer The Mennonite Historical Society concludes this year its tenth year of service in the field of Mennonite History, uniting both faculty and stu- dents in its membership. As in previous years it has continued its publica- tion of the Mennonite Quarterly Review. No new books were issued during the year by the Society although several manuscripts have been submitted and await publication. Less than the usual number of public meetings were held, the chief being the meeting at which Professor Umble read a paper on the history of the migration of the college from Elkhart to Goshen. The Peace Committee of the Society contributed to the promotion of the cause of peace on the campus. Harold S. Bender THE FOREIGN VOLUNTEER BAND Lester T. Hershey ..,...,...........,............................. President Gladys Burkhart ...........................,.... Secretary-treasurer Heeding the commandment of our Master, Go ye into all the World and preach the Gospel to every creature, the Foreign Volunteer Band was organized in September, 1916. Contrary to the practice in previous years, only those who have definitely committed themselves to service in the foreign field, and who are preparing to that end, are eligible to member- ship. Thirteen members and interested ones met every other Thursday evening during the past year for the purpose of becoming better informed as to the particular problems of foreign mission work, and to strengthen their love and devotion for Christ and His work, through fellowshiping in prayer and study. Besides studying Rev. Andrew Murray's Ministry of Intercession, or A Plea for More Prayer, we rece1ved encouragement from talks of several missionaries. The presence of God was felt 1n all the Meetings. Lester Hershey arent-aus as 119251 g. s i . Another is to gain a better knowledge of the French people, their customs, and their waysg to appreciate their achievements in literature, music, and artg to know something about the country itself. And a third motive is the cultivation of sociability among its members. These aims were carried out in the sessions held during this 1934-35 school year. For the first meeting, on October second, Miss Shenk gave an informal afternoon tea in the Avon rooms. On November fifteenth, in Kulp Hall, scenes from French stories were presented, followed by French games and songs. A sacred program, to which all beginners in French were invited, was rendered- on December fifteenth. After singing Christmas carols, gifts were exchanged. Then, on the evening of February fourteenth, the final meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Slate. Besides the program, an exchange of original valentines with French verses took place, and the officers for the ensuing year were elected. Ina K. Sponsor During the last few years, economic stress has necessitated transitions which were utterly unforseen. The added strain has increased the complexity of housing problems, adequate diets at low cost, consumer buying, and economic insecurity. To adequately meet these rapidly changing demands has required not only a change of emphasis in the school curriculum, but it has required the entire revolutionizing of thinking of those in the Home Economics field. More than ever, Home Economists have begun to realize that Home Economics is not a field limited to a few skills, but it is a field as broad and limitless as the vision of its leaders. Home Economists have invaded the business world in their intensive study of consumers' problemsg they have studied the teaching profession with its vast opportunities for advancelnentg and fur- thermore, they have investigated the home in its economic, social, and spiritual relation to society. Those of us who look at the possibilities of Home Economics through the eyes of the teacher, business-woman, or home-maker, need a vision of the field in its broadest aspects. We must be wide awake to current literature and problems, a knowledge of Which enables us to form attitudes which are truly professional. The Home Economics Club has been organized to definitely fill this need for those who are looking forward to real service. Goshen's negative A team defeated Anderson at Anderson and Goshen's affirmative team defeated Taylor University at Goshen. Prospects for next year are bright although three members of this year's varsity were graduated in Juno. Atlee Beeehy, '35, Rollin Krabill, '35, and Donald Sahli, '37, won the G and the right to wear two stripes. Lehman lv- H' Smith C' P' Martin During the last year the Goshen College Alumni Association has made an effort to get in touch with the regional associations in different parts of the world. Representatives have been sent to attend annual meetings of as many of the regional associations as have met in the United States since September of last year. Because of a common background of training and experience, alumni feel a need for a medium of expression in which interchange of ideas is possible. Such a need was definitely voiced by the association in Iowa at its meeting last summer. The lioard of Directors of the Association at Goshen has accordingly decided, in conjunction with the adrninistration ofthe college. to enlarge the Alumni News Letter and increase the number of issues to six annually. Articles on problems confronting alumni as workers for the object.ix'es of the Church sponsoring the College will be written by alumni chosen by the editor and an advisory editorial committee. It is believed that in this way the association at Goshen together with those in dii'ferent parts of the world may be helpful in promoting the interests of the Church and the College. Professor Umble, the editor of the News Letter. assisted by Mis llostetler, has been working during the last year in preparing a complete roster of alumni with addresses and vocations. If present plans carry this will be featured in the J une issue of the News Letter. Every Alumnus should have a copy of that issue for file. There are now alumni residing in most of the countries of the world. Alumni have been the speakers to give the annual addresses for the last. twenty-five years. They have been university professors, ministers, mis- sionaries, business men, and people ul' affairs generally. They come to hear the gospel story as rt is taught to them by Christian teachers. The workers endeavor to lead their pupils to Christ and give them good Christian training. Special programs are held at Christmas and Easter. Over one hundred Youths' Christian Com- panions are distributed every Sunday morning. Last Thanksgiving twen- wkkK5iWf X and lin If you were to come to a .little red school house in East Goshen some ty-six baskets of food were given out to needy families. We are grateful to the local school board for permitting us to use the school house, and to the principal for his kind services, However, the attendance is increasing and we need more room. Our highest attendance this year was one hundred and thirty-six, and it is inconvenient to take care of more than one hundred in the building. Therefore the workers are putting on a campaign for funds to build a building. We have one hundred and fifty dollars already and will appreciate any help which any- one can give. We are planning either to build a new building or to buv one and remodel it. Will you not pray for this work that God may provide for both our material and spiritual needs? Levi Hartzler GOSPEL DEPUTATION TEAMS For the third consecutive year the Extension Department of the Y. P. C. A. has been able to arrange for several Gospel Deputation tours during the Christmas holidays. Although these tours serve several pur- poses, we believe that by far their greatest value lay in the expression of personal testimony, both to the speakers and to the hearers. Two teams were sent out. One group, consisting of eight men, toured Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.
