He united with the XVeaver Mennonite Church near ,J I Harrisonburg when he was sixteen years of age, and remained an active member throughout 8 , . . .. his entire lite. n ll X On September 2, 1897, he was united in marriage to Mary Kate Martini of near Hagers- ,W town, Maryland. To this union were born eight children the two oldest, Salome and Harrv 1 ll v . . . - . in ' l , 4 Samuel, are deceased. He is survived by his wife, stx chtldren, Carreno Brunk Brown, Her- ' Y Ml mtonc, -lohr. lX.tlton, Neimanr Arthur, Fannie Susan Mary Elizabeth, and one sister, Anna E. l X, X 1 Brunk. ',' l l Brother Btunk spent his life as a teacher of music. After having been trained in some of ill ' f? the well established Music Conservatories of the New England States and of Chicago, he spent f three years teaching Music in VVest Central Academy, Mt. Clinton, Va., Five years in Bridge- lu' water College, a college of the Church of the Brethren, Bridgewater, Va., and in 1906 he came 4 to Gosher, College as director ot the School of Music, a place which hc fi'led until 191-I-. T I Brother Brunk was one of the early leaders of the Church to recognize the need of a I I Hymnal thas would be an expression of thc fundamental beliefs of the Mennonite Church. As a young man he encouraged the different conferences to appoint music committees to publish at KI' hymn book for the Church. The Virginia and Ohio Conferences appointed such committees, T2 and the work was begun. Brother Brunk as editor was assisted further by an Advisory Com- , mittee consisting of A. B. Kolb, C. Z. Yoder, Noah Stauffer ,and a Compiling Committee con- Q sistingj oi Eli S, Hallman, D. D. Miller, and J. S. Shoemaker. The first edition of the Church X and Sunday School Hymnal was published in IQOZ. lx , A few years later ,the Church felt a need for more Gospel Songs suitable for Sunday School X and the Xoung Peoples Meeting, and a supplement was added to the Church and Sunday School PQ Hymnal, under his editorship. His next published work was Educational Vocal Studies in 1912. This is a method book in , elementary sight singing and graded exercises and songs, a series of studies for those who are I U interested in further study of music in preparation to be song leaders in local Churches. . After the supplement to the Hymnal had been used for a number of years, a Gospel Song Book was phublghefi bydthe Chugch uradel: hlis Edlitorslluip. P 'N At the General Conference of the Church, held at Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 1919, he Y' again called to the attention of the leaders of the Church the need of a new hymnal, which Og would more adequately meet the needs for worship, to be used in the regular worship services , 1 of the Church. The committees there appointed tn prepare the hymnal had as leaders, C. Z. I Yoder, chairman of combined committees, S. F. Coffman, chairman of Hymns Committee, and W , J. D. Brunk, chairman of Tunes committee. These committees have had a number of meetings during the past six years in preparation for the new Hymnal. Their last meeting was held in ll 2 the home of Brother Brunk during the holidays just past. Their work has been completed with Q the exception of securing the permission for Copyrights of songs to be used. Brother Brunk lo had hoped to have the manuscript ready for the press by the last of January. l 4 He left one other completed manuscript ready for press which has not been published. l which is called Salvation Story. This is a number of Gospel songs largely composed by l, l himself to words composed by John VV. Wayland. In this he presents through song, the Life 3 of Clhrgtbfrom its beginning until the resurrection, pointing out the way of salvation according A to t e 1 e story. 7 if Brother Brunk was not only a compiler of songs suitable to the needs of the Church, but he ,1 was one of the few men in the Church who wrote hymns and Gospel songs in the spirit of l the Church. During the last few years he wrote many songs to fill this need, which have not fp been published. l The passing of Brother Brunk is a great loss to Goshen College ,and a still greater loss to 42 the work of the Church in the field of music. x ,X Funeral services were conducted at the residence by Bro. J. S. Hartzler, and at Goshen College by Sanford C. Yoder and Noah Oyer, on February 8. The message was based on the ,M words of the Apostle john, in Revelation 14:13. Interment was made in the Prairie Street Cemetery, Elkhart, Indiana. l ly ' 1 fl' Ag 1 .l f 1 RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT AND CONDOLENCE Ml On February 9, at a special meeting, the Faculty adopted the following resolutions of Q R respect and condolence: 2 VVhereas our Allwise Heavenly Father has seen fit to call from the scene of his earthly I labors our dear brother and fellow-worker, john D. Brunk, and K VVhereas we had looked forward with much pleasant anticipation to his association with us in the education and preparation of our young people for the duties of life, and lg Whereas we feel keenly the loss of our brother ,not only as it affects our work in the col- LDZ lege but also in the wider and larger field of the musical interests of the Church, be it 6 Resolved that, although we feel a deep sense of sorrow in the passing of Brother Brunk, Xl ,Z wc how in humble submission to the Divine VVisdom and that we extend to his bereaved wife ' Q and family our hearty expressions of sympathy and condolence in their deep bereavement, and ' Q be it further X Resolved that a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to the bereaved, that they be pub- ' lished in the College Record, and that they be spread on the official records of the Faculty. ll , ' 2 7. fI 'I' M I '. iris. .
