Goshen Central High School Goshen, New York 1986 Ideas (i-de-os)n. 1. thoughts, concepts, notions, opinions, beliefs, impressions, inventions . products of the imagination. “Entering high school as a Freshman is a new beginning 99 Nelson Morris, grade 9 ‘When you are a Freshman, there is a “wall” between you and the upperclassmen, but as a Sophomore the “wall” is gone and you become part of the school.” An Anonymous Sophomore “As a Sophomore I feel part of Goshen High — every year gets better Martha Krye, grade 10 “Compared to being a Freshman and a Sophomore, it’s better being a Junior because you have more freedom . . . you feel more important ...” Kristi Sadauskas, grade 11 ..• • •;.•••♦ • • m3 r ..............Ti i i. Dedication Ideas must work through the brains and the arms of good and brave men. or they are no better than dreams. — Kmcrson We have always admired individuals who strive to make their ideas realities. The man we recognize here is not only one such innovator, but is also one who encourages us to pursue our own goals to a successful end. We value his advice because we are assured of his interest and involvement in our activities-he has coached Varsity Basketball, has been a hard-working leader for the Citizen’s Party, and has stepped in as a committed advisor for our class. And so, for seventeen years of quality teaching and caring, we proudly dedicate the 1986 “Ideas” Yearbook to Mr. Walter Giattino. Senior year seems far off when first entering high school, but actually time goes by quickly. It’s a strange feeling to look back and see yourself as an underclassman, but even more strange to try and see yourself leaving high school, your friends, and everything so familiar to you. For the past three years we’ve worked so hard to make it to our final year of high school, and in just a short period of time it will all be over. Yet during this “short time” the feeling of being a senior sparks within each one of us and brings us closer to one another. As seniors our attitudes change and we become leaders for the underclassmen while having more pride in our school. And though the year does seem to pass quickly by, it is one that we will remember for a long time to come. Was the 1979 drowning victim really Josef Mcngclc, the Nazi doctor responsible for sending 400,000 to their deaths at Auschwitz? Among the scientists asked to identify the remains-exhumed from a cemetery near Sao Paulo, Brazil-were six Americans (clockwise from top left and holding photographs of evidence): forensic radiologist John Fitzpatrick; chief medical examiner of Nassau County, N.Y., Leslie Lukash; forensic anthropologists Ellis Kerley and Clyde Snow; Delaware’s chief medical examiner Ali Hamcli; forensic odontologist Lowell Levine. Arriving in Sao Paulo with what Snow calls “a very healthy skepticism,” the American team began analyzing the skull, bones, and hair and comparing the findings with everything known of Mcngelc's dental and medical history. After a week of study, the scientists reached a unanimous verdict: The skeleton was indeed that of the infamous “Angel of Death.’’ The most conclusive proof came from a German method of superimposing photographs of the young and old Mengele over a same-scale image of the exhumed skull. The fit of skull to features was perfect. Finally, after 40 years, case closed. (LIFE magazine) Lady Liberty’s Birthday! Thomas Joseph Gutierrez Chico. Likes to thank Mom, Dad and the Gang. After twenty years of corrupt dictatorship in the Phillipines. President Ferdinand Marcos was forced to flee the country due to the rebellion of his own people. Previously, “democratic” elections had been held. His opponent. Corazon Aquino, chose to challenge him after her husband was assassinated. It was widely believed that President Marcos had arranged the assassination. The election results favored Marcos, but the enraged population refused to accept the decision because of obvious fraudulent practices. On February 25, 1986. the United States advised Marcos to resign and Corazon Aquino became the president of the Phillipines. George Burns celebrating his 90th birthday. According to a survey taken early in the fall by the Class of '86, most of us drive to school, usually listening to WPDH (if we are fortunate enough to have an FM radio). And WPDH is bound to be something by Springsteen, our favorite male vocalist, Pat Bcne-tar, our favorite female vocalist, or U2 or Led Zeppelin, bands which tied as our favorite groups. Many seniors work; within our class there are waitresses, salespeople, consumer distributers, meat cleaners, babysitters, swim instructors, and cashiers, to name a few. When we aren’t working, we’re probably watching “Miami Vice’’ “The Cosby Show’’, or “Cheers’’ on television, or we might be listening to our favorite album, “The Wall’’ by Pink Flloyd while sipping some Pepsi and munching on some M Ms. Or we might plan to see a movie for $5.00 — our favorites are “Back to the Future’’ and “Raiders of the Lost Ark.’’ Some of us spend much of our free time decorating our lockers, dancing, playing musical instruments, drawing graffiti, coaching GYL, or even collecting skeletons. Wills con’t on pg. 167 CLASS HISTORY -Freshmen- On the first day of school there was no doubt in anyone’s mind who the new freshmen were. We were the huddled mass of 200 students who didn’t know if period 1 or homeroom came first. We eventually established some order under the leadership of President Chris Hea-ly, Vice President Patty Fisher, Secretary Dana Ouderkirk and Treasurer Michele Ulmer. Now that we had our officers we sought the assistance of class advisors-only to find that no one wanted us. A sense of relief swept through the Freshmen Class when we discovered that Freshmen Friday was null and void. We soon invented a new way to pass the time during those long Social Studies classes and after careful calculation we can truthfully state that Mr. Baldwin averaged approximately 76 “Heys” per period. John Ziobro made Varsity Soccer. Mr. Zigrossi terrorized the Fresh- men math classes. Our first quiz bowl turned out to be even less successful than we expected- not only did we lose, but we were thrown out for bad behavior as well. Brian Quattrini got into a fight with an electric razor and lost. We cleaned up at our Freshmen Car Wash Fund Raiser. We said goodbye to Chris Friend, Aimee Smith and Penny Bodle. The English trip to Stratford was designed to provide us with some cultural exposure; instead it provided Chris Coughlin with a means to earn some extra cash by gambling in the back of the bus. Marlon demonstrated his inner strength by eating a mixture of spaghetti, green beans and chocolate milk. Some people will do anything for ten dollars. Finally in April when we did receive our class advisors, one was a health teacher and the other a Special Ed. teacher. Was someone trying to tell us something? -Sophomore- This year we found leadership under President Patty Fisher, Vice President Patty Bull, Secretary Dana Ouderkirk and Treasurer Lisa Keller, but we still didn’t know which came first-period 1 or homeroom! Gina Barbone made her flying debut in Peter Pan. We said goodbye to more good friends: Lisa Green, Harry Bray, Krista Ellenas and Steve Gruber. The Chem. Honors class had some interesting antics this year; one of which included Mr. Johnson’s threatening to have the class strip-searched for a missing magnesium strip (which was later found in Andy Shore’s pocket), and the other being Kelly and Mary Ellen “doin’ acid” in lab. Deana and John were our class flirts. We lost our second quiz bowl to the over-achieving Freshman Class in the Fresh Soph Quiz Bowl. Dana lit up the night with a full moon. Laura and John broke up 32 times. John Z. fought with but lost to a carton of chocolate milk. Dave Ey pitched a no hitter to beat Warwick. Deana adopted the name DT from the Junior Class. Marlon didn’t show up on the day of the Spanish Regents because he got the wrong date, but next January proceeded to get the highest grade in his class. It could happen to anyone, right? -Junior- Because of our confidence in them, our officers remained the CLASS HISTORY same: President Patty Fisher, Vice President-Patty Bull, and Secre-tary-Dana Ouderkirk — with the exception of Allyson Kahn as our new Treasurer. “Does anyone know if we go to first period or homeroom?” Goshen Varsity was the OCL Soccer Champs. We became known as the accident prone class because of several “mishaps” with our cars. The 11R class, with the help of Lisa, Michelle, and Wayne tried to drive Ms. Shaw over the edge, but her super endurance prevailed. Laura John were getting along even better this year- they only broke up 74 times! Sandy had a run-in with a pleasant man in Chinatown. The Physics 11H class began the tradition of rating Mr. Kujawski’s jokes-which usually ranged between -7.9 and 2.3. Not to think that Mr. K was the only science teacher beloved by his students, several of the 11R Chem students showed their respect and admiration for their mentor by throwing pennies at him. Our Ziti Dinner and Fashion Show were great successes even though all we saw of Greg Olsen was his back. Not surprisingly we lost our third quiz bowl. The Talent Show was really hot with 2nd place winners “The Wheel of Fortune” with our very own Vanna “Jen” White. Goshen High’s Spanish Club invaded Madrid and several other major cities wreaking havoc in their wake. Will the country ever be the same? Sue H., Liza G., and Valerie B., were so eager to enter the “real” world that they doubled up and graduated early. Alexa T., and Mike L., moved on to greener pastures (but who has more cow pastures than Goshen?) -Senior- To no one’s surprise, our class president was once again Patty Fisher, but our Vice President was Rob Reddy, our secretary was Shio-ban Foley, while our Treasurer was Allyson Kahn. As seniors you’d think we would know where to go on the first day of school, but yet there were several hushed whispers of “Where do we go first?” But now that we’re almost ready to go out on our own we all realize that homeroom comes first! Doesn’t it? The class really came together with the addition of our new principal Roy Reese and his “BAD” car. As seniors we revived several long forgotten traditions: -Dances became the “in” thing, and Blithe Spirit was the highly entertaining Senior class play. -We had our first bonfire in 20 years for the Warwick game, and changed tradition with our overnight senior class trip. Several senior guys showed their school spirit by giving us a cheerleading lesson during the pep rally, (what legs!), while Jay had a different way of showing his pep. Girls varsity soccer won the OCL title. Tom, Bob, and Paco jammed with the Artie Lawrence Quartet. Several members of the Enrichment club tested the theory of buoyancy when Grover’s sneaker braved the Asho-kan waterfall. Mr. Giattino took over as our NEW class advisor when Mr. L retired. Our reputation of being accident prone was reconfirmed with a series of car accidents; both first and re peat offenders. Steven and Gumby joined AP Bi and 12R Chemistry classes respec tively. Guess who won class flirts AGAIN? John and Deana! No everything changes! Shioban needed the help of Go shen’s finest when she locked he keys in her truck twice in one week The Physics classes continued t rate Mr. K’s jokes (his scores didn’ improve much, though) Tom P. went a little crazy with ; daisy. The Jazz Band had a recon crowd of 20 people at a fund raise (the member’s parents, most likely The Varsity Football team cap tured the OCL title for their perfor mance in the Snowbowl and thei dedicated cheerleaders were then to cheer them on- against orders. Tim D. had a season pass to sk the Alps. Thanks to Gloria we had an extr; day off. Jay M. was surprised, to say th least, to see Ms. S, Mrs. G, and Ms H walk in to Burger King on thei lunch break. Due to boisterous behavior th( Christmas Dance closed early. Mark H. supplied us all wit! morning music in the parking lot. Our class had the most Regent: Scholarship winners but oddly nc National Merit Finalists. We final!; beat the Juniors in a heated battk at the Quiz Bowl. Bravo! So here we are, ready to go oui separate ways in a few weeks and ir closing we can only say, “God help the rest of the world, they’re noi ready for us.” 1. Funniest Nickname Robert ”Digger Reddy and Kelly Steak” Rcape It’s very difficult to describe how one feels as an underclassman. At first, coming to the high school is frightening and confusing. Everyone else seems to know what to do and where to go. But as time goes on, things slow down and many of the pressures seem to disappear, although there are some disadvantages that remain — such as always having the last choice, or meeting the occasional senior who seems to think his “title” makes him more of a person. However, conditions improve each year; the once silent underclassman begins to speak out and face new challenges. The anticipation of senior year helps to lessen some of the anxieties of these first years of high school, and the greatest reward for an underclassman is stepping up on Class Day — all of his efforts have paid off and he is one step closer to that senior year. Oh, sure, we bring the books home (if there’s nothing else to carry)-we may even put them on the floor and look at them while we watch “The Brady Bunch” reruns, but when it comes down to actual studying, well ... We thought about it .. we felt bad about not doing it ... Most of us end up following Karen Corey’s example (see picture above) — we live by the motto “I’d rather be sleeping!” WORLD II i There are many reasons to get involved in the numerous school activities. To begin with, participating in these programs is one of the best ways to meet others with your same interests. While you meet other students you may work together to accompolish something worthwhile-and it's the best feeling in the world to know you’ve helped benefit your school or community. Everyone is interested in different things, so there are all kinds of clubs and activities you may join, depending upon your personal taste. Participation in these school activities is a productive way to spend your free time, so get involved, make some friends, and have some fun while you’re at it! The Citizen’s Party enjoyed a busy year. 116 Ruthannc Doolittle, Chris Curry The People’s Party Whereas: Under the leadership of Chris Curry and RuthAnn Doolittle, The People’s Party defeated The Citizen’s in the local election by a land slide. Whereas: Only under the supervision of our enthusiastic leader, Mr. Harold Grimm were we able to accomplish our goals. Resolved: The People’s Party of Goshen goes on record as being in favor of increased membership in the Youth-in-Government Program, whether it be People’s or Citizen’s. This year’s advisors were Mr. Cahill and Mrs. Russo, who replaced Mr. Lof-fredo upon his retirement. The organization is committed to ending drunk driving, particularly among high school students. The group held fund raisers to raise money in order to sponsor a SADD week from April 14 to 18, which will include a noted speaker. Carolyn Romano, Debbie Groves The 1986 “Ideas” Yearbook Staff worked harder than ever this year to produce a unique, creative, quality yearbook — and the result is well worth the effort. The seventh period Year-book Journalism class deserves a great deal of credit for doing all those monotonous, time-consuming tasks with little (?) complaint. And what would we have done without Mrs. McCarthy and her lists of things to do....and lists of other things to do....and lists of more things to do. To sum it up, we thank all those people who all started with an IDEA, and worked so hard to turn it into a yearbook. The Photography Staff: Allyson Kahn. Dale Schmick, Chris Curry. Chris Gilner. INDYphoto As a year-round participant in athletic programs, I cannot stress enough their importance to the school. Sports provide a great amount of school spirit and pride which has made my four years of high school more rewarding and most of all .. .fun. Competing in any sports program can be beneficial in many ways. As an individual you go through a learning process like any other school subject, but this learning process is a very personal one that is both fun and enjoyable. It helps you learn what you can achieve through dedication and hard work. Most importantly, you discover what it is like to be part of a “team” and how each person on the “team” is just as valuable as the other. There is no better feeling in the world than contributing to a winning athletic team. But for those willing to take up the challenge, no matter what the outcome, it is impossible to come up a loser. Jim Duesel Quarterback, 1986 Gladiator Football Team SNOWBOWL ’85 Varsity Football OCL Champs The football season began with a summer camp session held at the high school, while other students were enjoying the end of their summer vacations. Opening game against Valley Central ended in a 6-6 tic. After a non-league victory over Walkkill, the Gladiators dropped a close game to Washingtonville but jumped back with two wins over Monroe-Woodbury and O'Neill. After a loss to Port Jervis, the team began to roll through the rest of their games. Each victory brought them closer to the final showdown against arch-rival Warwick. A 35-7 victory enabled the Gladiators to reach two of their goals, to bring the Spirit trophy back to Goshen and to give the winning game ball to Charlie Murphy, who was injured before the season began and had to be content to be a spectator. With the victory over Warwick came the National Division Championship. In their final game, Goshen defeated Monroe-Woodbury in a snowstorm to become Orange County League Champions. Greg Olsen led the Gladiators in offense and defense. He rushed for 572 yards while scoring 5 touchdowns. On defense Greg led the team with 48 tackles. Senior quarterback Jim Ducsel passed for 717 yards while rushing for 357 yards. Tom Brozyeki led the defense with 7 sacks. Junior Mike Zigrossi intercepted five passes to aid the team in their defensive efforts, while Eugene Kurth added eight extra points. Those positions were filled superbly by underclassmen and we went on to a 8-4 season, and a second place finish in our conference. The season was highlighted by an upset of previously unbeaten and eventual county champs, O’Neil. Tryouts this season were disappointing for the team when they learned of the permanent absence of a fellow teammate. Michele Ulmer. Needless to say, the team soon became complete, consisting of (2) sophomores, (11) juniors, and (8) seniors. The highly spirited team put their talent to use, clinching the National Conference Title in a 2-0 triumph over Port Jervis, Goshen then automatically earned a berth in the OCL Title game against American Conference titlist, Cornwall. The Gladiators rallied to tie Cornwall 2-2 for the OCL Co-Champion Title by coming back from a 2-0 down, late in the second half. It’s been many years since Goshen has earned such titles, so indeed it was a great accomplishment. Goshen was defeated in the semifinal for the Section 9 Class B Tournament by archrival Washingtonville. The team’s major losses will be (8) outstanding seniors: Sandy Wood 10, Sara Andolina 11, Patty Bull 16, Ruthanne Doolittle 19, Patricia Fisher 23, and captains, Stephanie Zawaski 20, and Lisa Keller 24. The athletes have come out of the long winter hibernation of the Goshen High gym and are catching the rays of the warm spring sun as they practice to be in top physical condition. Tennis matches, golf tournaments, track meets, volleyball, baseball and softball games will soon be part of the daily after school activities. The yearbook staff wishes good luck to all the teams! If you ever walked through the halls and just looked at the people you’d see how very different we all are — we look different, we speak differently, we think differently — we are all separate and unique. But we are bound together by one common purpose; we are here to learn. And before it is all over we will have poured over endless pages and learned countless lessons. We’ve learned the rules for an isosceles triangle and studied the parts of an atom. We’ve seen how literature reflects life, memorized lists of French vocabulary, and discussed the caste system of India. We’ve worked with computers, cameras, wood, musical instruments, foods, paintbrushes, and Latin roots. But besides all this our scholastic experiences have taught us a great deal that cannot be found in books. We’ve learned how to work with others and how to respect authority. We’ve also begun to discover ourselves through our interests, dislikes, and reactions to activity around us. Academically, socially, mentally, physically — we’ve grown in each of these areas. Our learning experiences do not stop here, however----they are just beginning. Debbie Groves 1986 Yearbook Editor Academics Central Administration Mr. James English. On September fourth, 1985, Goshen opened its doors to Mr. Roy Reese as its new High-School principal. Mr. Reese joins the Goshen faculty with 22 years of experience. The last 15 of those years were spent at Miller Place High School on Long Island. He started his career as a Social Studies teacher but expanded his experience by serving as department chairman of Social Studies, football and baseball coach, director of athletics, and finally assistant principal. There have been comments comparing Mr. Reese to Goshen High School’s former principal of twenty years. Dr. Robert E. Leslie. When asked if he felt that he was working in Dr. Leslie’s shadow, Mr. Reese replied, “No. I am my own person. I know who I am and have confidence in myself. You don’t replace 20 years of work: you continue and build on what was there.” Mr. Reese sees his move to Goshen as consistent with his philosophy of bettering himself in order to benefit others. As he has taken on additional responsibilities throughout his career, he has done so with this hope of gaining experience that can be shared with, and utilized by, others. This, of course, is the philosophy of a master teacher. And Mr. Reese himself says that he is “first and foremost a teacher.” by Rosemarie Robinson 14 j Mrs. Pat DePalo Secretary to Principal The Guidance Department Mr. Andre Assalian High School Ass't.
