REFLECTIONS 1983 mirror is an old friend. The best 8 Touch the sky with your mind’s eye, let your spirit soar. Mirrors should reflect a little before throwing back images. 14 Wasn’t it pretty? Ssh, someone s coming! 17 Reflections I find reflecting on eighteen years as principal of the Goshen Central High School a relatively pleasant process. Initial thoughts about such a review conjure ideas of comparisons with then and now, or where we were and where we are. As important and valuable as statistical averages are, they seem to take second place to those more significant memories which involve people — their ideas and concerns. Most members of the Class of ’83 were born during the year 1965 which marks the beginning of these reflections. That particular time was the early part of a very active and vocal period among students everywhere and did not exclude Goshen students. It was an era of emotional stress and political dissent. Our faculty, administration, and students had to meet new challenges — socially, morally, educationally. New emphases were given to concepts relative to rights and responsibilities, demands and privileges, and relevant education. We were faced with social unrest, demonstrations, and moratoriums. From then until now our students and staff contended emotionally and intellectually with Vietnam, the hostage situation in Iran, and other Middle-East crises. At home there was an increased awareness of minority rights, individual rights, the need for the protection of our environment, and concern about the poliferation of nuclear weapons. In the midst of all this we experienced a Watergate. No further evidence is needed to say that these have been volatile and stressful times for all. Communication became a most important ingredient of our efforts to deal with problems of the period. Students, parents, and school staff joined together on many occasions to cope with some of the problems cited above. The school’s role seemed to take on greater significance to many people. It was an era during which many people in the community representing a variety of views and backgrounds came together. We had to cope with the diversity of views and emotions and at the same time retain stability and dignity — not always an easy task. In an effort to deal with some of the pressures of the time, we stretched our imaginations and provided not only a more flexible scheduling approach but also introduced many new programs. Such an approach encouraged our critical review of existing courses and or contents. It was a period during which our philosophy broadened considerably. Many more students were encouraged to reach beyond their immediate educational grasps, and did so successfully. We responded to our students’ requests for involvement and relevance with just such opportunities, including responsibilities. I remember well, and with good feelings, the evening rap sessions [discussion groups] both in school and in my home during which we dealt with many of the conflicts that had surfaced at that time. Emotions were sometimes quite close to the surface, but considerable growth for all took place. Part of that growth included improvement in our understanding of and appreciation for one another’s views and cultures. Although we have returned to the more traditional type of schedule, I recognize that a number of lessons that we learned earlier are still with us. We seem to face the reality of our problems as an educational institution more openly and in step with the times. Students and staff demonstrate greater concern for one another. There is a willingness on the part of some of our students to move out into the community, and without recognition, assist those less fortunate. Our student government has become a more viable body in recent years. Student participation in sports and other school activities this year has reached the highest point in the last eighteen years, and probably considerably longer. This factor complements the earlier comment relative to the increased numbers of students who have accepted the challenge of broader more demanding academic programs with statistically supported success. Much remains for us to accomplish, particularly in that area referred to under peer pressures. Numbers of students still struggle to resist the pressures to be peer clones, others Dr. Robert E. Leslie succumb. Also, we must continue to try to wear better our natural attributes and attained successes. Being a worthwhile winner is sometimes more difficult than being a good loser. Education should help make it possible for our students to be discerning citizens, separating fact from fiction and the acceptable from the unacceptable. I think our students in general have reached that level. Finally, I believe the members of the Class of ’83 like their predecessors owe a debt of gratitude to their parents, a highly competent and professional staff, and to a community that continues to believe solidly in the precepts of good public education. I hope there is appreciation by the graduates for the many factors involved in the development of a substantial educational program, and more importantly, that this foundation will serve as personal support in your meeting the many challenges that lie ahead. Dr. Robert E. Leslie, Principal Goshen Central High School Dedication Goshen Central High School, Goshen, N.Y. For years each Goshen Yearbook staff has followed the tradition of dedicating the yearbook to one special teacher or administrator. Traditions are made to be broken, so this year we are dedicating the yearbook to a group of people. These are the people who have supported our class throughout the years. They have served as role models, given us guidance and more importantly they have taught us the ideals and values that make life meaningful. They have raised us and protected us from simple random growth as they gave us direction toward adulthood. These are just some of the reasons why we hereby dedicate the 1983 Reflections yearbook to all the people who have helped make the class of 1983 what it is now. To all the teachers, administrators, and especially our parents who were always there when we needed them, our great thanks. The Board of Education Seated (left to right): Mrs. Joyce T. This year the Goshen High School Student Senate can reflect back upon a very rewarding school year. In October of 1982 the Senate sponsored their biennial Magazine Drive. Through the dedicated efforts of the entire student body, the general organization fund realized over $5,000.00. Benefiting from the success were: The Student Senate Scholarship Fund, the Goshen High School Stage Crew, the Colorguard and the Yearbook Staff. November brought the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Again, through the unselfish efforts of students and staff alike several local families were able to enjoy a very special holiday dinner. In December, students were given the opportunity to change roles with their teachers for a day. This day turned out to be an overwhelming success! While Vice Principal Cristiano was administering detention, Cheerleader Assa-lian was leading the Student Faculty Basketball game. January was the occasion for Brotherhood Day in connection with Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday. School spirit was at its peak. And once again there was the revival of John Fraser’s immortal THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY every morning and the morning announcements. The Senior Citizens of Goshen were wined and dined in elegant cuisine at G.H.S. in February the occasion of the annual Senior Citizens Banquet. The spring term brought the battle of the brains in the quiz bowls; another Broadway preview -“Man of La Mancha;” The Ritual War Games - Field Day; and finally commencement exercises in June. Once again the senators, students and faculty at Goshen High School can reflect back on a job well done. Under the calculated coaching of Mr. Lyons and the inspired leadership of Captain Pete “Sasquatch” Doskoch and Co-captain Rich “M.I.T.” Bernius, the team stunned the math world with innovating strategies and scintillating techniques. The highlight of the year was a spectacular 28 point performance by the team in the season’s second meet. As gaping onlookers looked on, Pete, Rich, Pam “Turtleneck” Thompson, and Broc Maninoff” Hite all had a perfect 6-for-6 day. The other team members, including Paul “ % $@!!’ Barbone, Lynn “Duts Krish, Chris “Tine” Folding. George “George” Solomon, and Laura “See Ya Soons, all displayed great courage admirable ability. Furthermore, Lynn, Christine, and Laura entertained spectators with their spirited polychromatic outfits. The B Team was in awe of A Team for most of the season and consequently did not perform as well. Nevertheless, considering the rather questionable calibre of its members, captain Wayne Schanck and Co-captain Franz Haas did a fine job with the team. The other members of B Team were Brett “Grubb lngersoll. Robyn Aigner” Cunard. Kurt “or is it Franz?” Haas. Margueritte “Hosdaghian, and Mark “TRS-80” Irons, the team’s best scorer. There was also a C Team. Its members: Dina Romano, Ellen Rothman, and Angelo Irineo. 40 9th Grade Math Team The Impecunious Investment Club Paul Dunkelman, Chris Kauffman. Rich Bernius. Tom Andrews, Franz Haas YOUTH IN People’s Party The past year was an astonishingly successful one for the Goshen People’s Party. The year’s first meeting showed the party to be full of buoyant and enthusiastic members. Several of them achieved particularly noteworthy accomplishments. At November’s platform convention, four-year veteran Dawn Hesse was elected secretary. Later that month three other members were nominated to run for county offices. All three won devastating victories in December’s election: chairperson Pam Thompson was elected Congressperson A. the amiable Peter Doskoch won his race for Coroner, and rookie Richard Arjani was easily elected District Attorney Peter’s victory was particularly overwhelming. Fawn Morley, always effervescent, displayed her creativity by engineering a huge People sign during the campaign season. Her efforts paid off; in addition to the aforementioned victors, four members won elections at the local level: David Bally was elected Supervisor, Beth Solomon was elected Town Clerk. Ted Yntema was elected Superintendent of Highways, and Tom Reape was elected Town Justice. Certainly the party can be proud of its accomplishments. People’s Party Members: Rich Arjani, Dave Bally, Paul Barbone, Chris Curry, Colleen Curry, Chris DePuy, Mary Ellen Didato, Peter Doskoch, Beth Fustance. Debbie Groves, Sue Harrigan. Dawn Hesse. Twirlers The Cerebral Science Club In the autumn of 1982 a memorable moment in Goshen High School history occurred: spectators witnessed the spontaneous generation of an organized and functional club from the chaotic entropy of raw scientific ideas and theories. This promising new organization, the Science Club, has been formed by and for the curious and scientifically-minded students of Goshen High School to promote scientific research and the general advancement of knowledge. Its members will participate in many fascinating and intellectually intriguing endeavors which will be limited only by their imaginations and their reasoning abilities. The club’s goal is to open doors between willing students and the scientific world around us. Members: Paul Barbone, Franz Haas, Kurt Haas. The squad was coached by Mr. Robert Zigrossi assisted by Mr. Robert Graham, Mr. Jerry Orsley, and Mr. Michael Turi. Goshen’s offense was very strong this year. The Gladiators scored a total of 177 points in the 10 games played. The Goshen defense was also very tough. In 8 out of 10 games, the strong line did not allow the opponent more than one touchdown. Two school records were set by players on the team. Senior Marc Colantuono broke the single season rushing record with his 1,050 yard effort. Golden Toe Award winner Dan Grabowski set the longest field goal record with his 40 yard boot. Senior nose guard A1 Ramirez also had a fine season, making 33 tackles and sacking the opposing team’s quarterback 9 times. The Gladiators ended the season beating rival Warwick for the Spirit Trophy and becoming National Conference Champs. In the OCL Championship game, Goshen was defeated by the strong Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders. Despite this loss, the coaches feel that this year’s season will be an incentive to aim for the OCL Crown in the future. Marc Colantuono. Ian Nierstedt, and Al Ramirez were honored after the season’s end by being picked for the Record All-Star First Team. Henry Andryshak, Don Andryshak, and Dan Grabowski made second and third teams. The entire team deserves praise for the hard work and superior playing they did all season. 80 Goshen Goshen Goshen Goshen Goshen Goshen Minisink Goshen Goshen Monroe RECORD 13 33 7 F2S 0V, 16 14 13 32 Middletown Pine Bush Valley Central Pearl River ovinia Port Jervis Goshen Cornwall Warwick Goshen VARSITY FOOTBALL: Matt Sass. Class History Freshman Year We entered high school with the reputation of being the worst class to go through the school in years. However, we still had high hopes of success. To insure our progress we brought a couple of extra team players from the middle school • Mr. Wolfe and Mr. Zigrossi. Our first order of business, besides finding our way to our classes, was to elect class officers. We chose Julie Seligmann, Sue Kleinwaks, Tina Fazzino, and Toni Lynn Lasaponera. With that done we were ready for bigger and better things. Thus, we approached Spirit Week with great gusto. As a theme we chose Dracula, and it would have been great if the upperclassmen had not torn down all of our decorations. Come spring we showed that we were not a class that gave up easily. George Solomon gave the sophomore class a run for their money at the Frosh-Soph Bowl. We also became the tug-of-war champions at field day. We weren’t without individual memories either Peter McMahon made Varsity Soccer. Ed Keller became interested in mountain climbing. He wore knickers to school and began to climb the school’s west wall. Dawn Hesse became friends with a few of the seniors in her Phys. Ed. class. To repay her for her friendship they presented her with a heart - a heart from a fetal pig. Daryl Longworth had problems with a certain science teacher and became the first person to get a referral in homeroom. Mary Lemma tried to discover the contents of an unknown solution. Besides using the research method she also tried pouring it down her back. And, of course, we all remember rent-a-cop! Sophomore Year We began our sophomore year a little less green and a lot sillier. This year our leaders were: Sue Kleinwaks, Kim Keating, Pam Thompson, and Tina Fazzino. Once again Peter McMahon made Varsity Soccer. “The Page” gained a new reporter named Peter Doskoch. His first story made quite a splash. In fact, it was so popular that it was referred to in the next issue. Too bad that referral was in the form of a retraction. Kevin and Erik took an unauthorized field trip to the woods. Unfortunately, they were found out. Not to worry, however, they got sent on a new field trip, this time to the ALPs. A hole was found mysteriously drilled in the school store wall. Say, John, do you know anything about this? Jane Schlesser opened her locker only to be greeted by 65 Hermit Crabs live from Maine. Laura Mochi dyed her hair to see if blondes really do have more fun. The girl’s ski team learned to spell in a very unusual way. They used the letters from a street sign. Too bad the law was not impressed. The volleyball games in Phys. Ed. had to end early one day when it was John Fraser’s turn to serve and he got all of the balls stuck in the ceiling. Come spring we once again triumphed at field day when we became tug-of-war champions for the second year in a row. That same spring Mrs. Kneipp joined the Navy. That summer a few of us actually gained admittance into driver’s education. While driving down Main Street in Newburgh, Fawn Morley showed her driving expertise, or lack thereof, by driving through a red light. Junior Year We started that September little apprehensive about the regents we were to take in June. We also rejoiced because we knew that we were two down with two to go. Our fearless leaders this year were: Sue Kleinwaks, Kim Keating, Lisa Anderson, and Steven Fogelman. For the third year in a row Peter McMahon made varsity soccer. Of course we won the Spirit Week contests and the tug-of-war. Ed Keller decided to come back to Goshen High School for a visit. Since leaving Goshen High he had decided that using doors was passe, so he entered the school by using the window in Mrs. Girardin’s Spanish IV Class. Say, did he have a visitor’s pass. Sue Kleinwaks decided to announce Freshman Friday over the P.A. system. Sue was soon relieved of her post as morning announcer. A few members of the Honor’s English class showed a few creative ways of spending their ten minute break periods. There were superball bouncing contests daily and frisbee throwing contests in the spring. On class day Steven and Mark decided to have a friendly game of bumper tag. Unfortunately, their bumpers locked and things became not so friendly. In the summer while a great many students were in summer school trying, in vain, to pass their English and Social Studies regents, a privileged few of us were expose to the wonderful world of driving with “Turn slow, go slow” Mr. Siracuse. Sign reading was emphasized, but some people still weren’t with it. Mr. Ernst’s car found out in a hurry that 84 was the route number not the speed limit. We were also informed that animal life in the path of an automobile would not be tolerated. Fine, on route 211 a certain driver, ed. car was seen swerving into a corn field to pass a grazing cow. Two more miles down the road man and his best friend were being dragged across the path of a GCS death mobile. Five hundred feet further an obstinate jogger was reluctant to share the road. Route 211 had turned into “wild kingdom”. Senior Year Finally, we made it to our senior year and we were ready for some fun. The people elected to see us through these jovial times were: George Solomon, Lisa Anderson, Evelyn Cusack, and Steven Fogelman. Needless to say, Peter McMahon made varsity soccer. Unfortunately, he fell sick and missed the first part of the season. Our soccer teams and our football team captured their division titles. In our senior year we became a much closer class. This was shown when some seniors felt it necessary to fit 18 people at a lunch table that was made to only hold 8 people. At the fall pep rally the senior section showed just how quiet we could be. When we were called upon to cheer and show our spirit we remained perfectly silent. In December after our first major snowstorm one of our seniors learned that the curb was not the best place to park on a slippery day. Good job, Axle! In January a fourth period English class had a party in honor of its early graduates. John Fraser supplied a very special punch. Mr. Siracuse’s third period science class decided to do an experiment on peanut M M’s. Say, Donna what happens to M M’s when they fall on the floor? Finally, in our senior year we learned that there was a bit of royalty in our class when Steven Fogelman announced that he was a prince. Will Steven become a king or will his government suffer a coup d’ etat? Will the seniors win the tug-of-war championship for the fourth year in a row? For the answers to these questions and many more stay tuned for the Reflectins supplement.
