VAUEy || s' jshen PublidX ■W3 Main Stre A'V «Jl WA5MJ3r 3TOHV11 iimtjpj Voyager ’81 Goshen High School Goshen, New York 2 This book marks the completion of a four year voyage for the senior class. Voyager 81 is a record of events, of experiences, of aspirations. It is a tribute to a period in our lives which is gone forever. The voyage has not always been smooth sailing; we have encountered numerous obstacles during these years. Vet none of these obstacles have proven insurmountable. We have succeeded, and we have, each in his own way, learned from our experiences. We face now another sort of voyage. For the first time in our lives, we will be on our own. This new independence will be a challenge — it will mean different people, different places, different ideas. But there is a danger inherent in this independence. In this new environment, we must resist the temptation to succumb to the mindlessness of the crowd. We must not rely on the ideas and opinions of others, but must form our own ideas, our own opinions. We must guard against becoming so obsessed with the need to belong that we lose all traces of our individuality. Above all, we must not lose sight of our goals. To become an engineer only because writing isn't lucrative or to become a dentist solely because craftsmen aren't included in the society clique decisions such as these are affronts to our personal integrity. We must remain true to our hopes, our aspirations, ourselves. In the upcoming years, we will have a chance to test these aspirations, a chance to test ourselves. Let us hope that we have the courage of our convictions. FERN E. REISS Activities Candids The body travels more easily than the mind, and until we have limbered up our imagination we continue to think as though we had stayed home. They also attended a performance of the New York Philharmonic, as well as a dinner at West Point. YEARBOOK The Yearbook Staff started the year on an optimistic note. After all, for most of us this was our senior year. What could go wrong? Famous last words... We knew we were off on the wrong track when we discovered the debt left to us by our predecessors. ($2,000, courtesy of last year’s senior class.) Alas, it was only a foreshadowing of what was to come. Our financial endeavors were just not fated. Four people baked for our bake sale, six people sold, and nobody bought. Our dance was attended by more chaperones than dancers, and we figured out why the band was called Nightmare when they played on and on and on and on ... Aside from finances, however, we had a lot of fun. We discovered the value of a room of our own in respect to mid-morning parties and deadline day pizzas. We attracted quite a crowd peering through the windows at us munching, but realized they were not ogling us, only the Konica girl mascot. Through it all, Private Neal entertained us with tales of John’s mukluk, Fern’s mandarin duck, and a howling doc. Through John Fraser’s enlightening announcements, Marty’s interior decorating attempts, Steve’s constant refrain of “I am the photography editor!”, and Jean’s lost layouts, we struggled on. We mislaid quad pacs, corrected grammar, re-possessed sold pictures, and un-cen-sored writeups. We “almost missed” every single deadline, but made them all. We would never do it again — but we have to admit that it was a heckuva lot of fun. The Staff: Fern Reiss, Editor: Jean Rimbach, Assistant Editor; John Neal, Humour Editor; John Santos, Art Editor; Martin Irons and Steve Skyer, Photo Editors; John Fraser and Diane Barron, Financial Editors; Laura Garling, Michelle Markowitz, Pam Hehn, Joe Colligan, Mary Lemma, Sue Rankin, Sallee Jordan, Heidi Rose, Alana Faust, Lori Maney, Karen Riepma, Shirley Lawson, Lambrini Adamis, Yvette Spielberger, David Fischer, Joanne VanHaaster, Clare Poggen-burg, Steve Gooss Disasters A FORESHADOWING OF THINGS TO Com.. . 61 MATH TEAM During the 1980-81 math season the glorious Goshen A Team, behind their fearless leader DL2, overwhelmed their inferior opponents in the Orange County League, Using an awesome combination of mathematical depth and perception the team went undefeated, wtih one exception, for the second straight season. Rookie mathematicians Pete Doskoch, Dan Toomey, and Bill Sayre, backed up the brilliant veteran line of Rick (the quick) Hatfield, Karl Haas, John Santos, Fern Reiss, Sue Reiss, and the dynamic duo of |ohn and Francis Ernest Kragh. As predicted by the brilliant Coach Lyons (ranked 49th on the all-time mathematician's list) the Goshen A Team successfully defended their league title, easily routing their outclassed opponents. The struggling Goshen B Team, led by Broc Hite, was able to overcome their incompetencies and finish with an admirable 0-5 record. Other disappointing members included Georgie Solomon, Pam (Greyhound) Thompson, Ed (Black Hole) Keller, Lynn Krish, and Rich Bernius. Their coach has begged anonymity. The B Team feels that an improvement is in line for next season. The Goshen math team hopes it can continue to serve as a pillar of strength and a source of unfaltering inspiration to all the students of our wondrous school. Abbott. A. Adamis. G. Adler. G. He vrooms up to school on his motorcycle, scribbles shovels on compositions, and asks if we can make up our alleged minds. He has acted as an emcee for our quiz bowls and a coach for our basketball team, and in all of his encounters with us he has injected the same note of enthusiasm that permeates his teaching. He has not only taught us language but has instilled in us a love of that language; he has not only imparted knowledge but has sparked within us a thirst for greater knowledge. Perhaps most of all, he has taught us to laugh at ourselves. Although we have groaned at his jokes and puns (penciled in the margins so he won't forget to tell them) we have been enriched, and we have learned to view the world in a lighter manner. For his wit, his devotion, his inspiration and his love, we dedicate the 1981 Yearbook to Mr. Charles Eisenhart.
