Goshen has its own Olympian, who carries in his heart the spirit of these originals and who carries out their philosophy every day. He is a man who has taught us, befriended us, and coached us. He has sparked in us the desire to strive for higher goals, but he has helped us keep out feet on the ground. He has seen us through four years of ups and downs, has watched us and helped us grow up. He has unfailingly supported us in our endeavors and has not once derided us in our attempts at adulthood. The senior class proudly dedicates this yearbook, Olympian '80, to Mr. Carl Osgood. These students are ready to go anywhere, anytime to fight forest fires. After forming a little more than a year ago, they have fought a number of fires, including ones in Woodcock, Bear Mountain, and Kerhonkson. With on-the-job and in-class training, they are ready to help protect our remaining wilderness. FOREST FIRE CONTROL TEAM 81 STAGE BAND 82 CHORUS MARCHING BAND 83 MUSIC THEATRE PRODUCTION This year Mr. Wright formed a new class designed to offer students a total experience in the presentation of a musical. Students explored all the onstage and backstage roles: acting, singing, design and construction of scenery, lighting and makeup. The class's fall production was the musical melodrama. Young Dracula (October 24-25). In the winter, puppet shows were staged at Scotchtown Elementary School (Jan. 9) and the Intermediate School (Jan. 11). The class's finale was the musical comedy, Heavens to Betsy! on June 3. 85 GUYS AND DOLLS In November, the Goshen Teachers' Association entered the dramatic world by sponsoring a sparkling production of Guys and Dolls for the benefit of the scholarship fund. Participation both on and off the stage was not limited to the G.T.A., though; administrators, former faculty members, spouses, students, and friends worked hard together to make the theatrical venture a great success. 87 WHERE'S CHARLEY? Look in the chorus! 89 CRICKETT TEAM Bouncing back from a wasted 1978 season (0 wins, 0 losses) the Goshen High School Varsity Crickett Team posted a winning season under first year coach Les Toil. The girls put on the traditional fall sports pep rally with the football cheerleaders. Goshen finished the season 11-2 overall. As a result, five skilled seniors were sent to the Exceptional Senior Game. The importance of teamwork and a desire for excellence in all areas of life were stressed by Coach Romano at the awards dinner. Although every member of the team contributed 100% to victory, six players received special recognition from their peers and Mr. Romano. One of the assets which is not visible in a team's record is the spirit exhibited for the team by the team members, cheerleaders, and loyal fans. The intense pride in this team resulted in an intimacy between the team members and spectators which proved to be a victory in itself. 98 Opponent Burke (NL) VaJjey Central Monticello Pine Bush Middletown Port Jervis Monroe Valley Central Monticello Pine Buih . Being told that we would be picked on and pushed around, told to go to the wrong homeroom, we were prepared for anything. But everyone else was lost, too. The whole school was lost. Teachers had no idea how loud to speak because there were no doors. In fact, we didn't own the walls, the floors, the gym, the grounds, anything. In the first week of school everybody knew who St. lohn's Caterina Fazzino was. As the weeks went by it was time to pick our class officers and get into the swing of things. Our President was )anet lacob, Vice-President was lane Hodman, Secretary was Lori Yurchuk and Treasurer Pete Huben. They did a heck of a job considering that there was not one teacher in the school that wanted to be our advisor. But we finally did get advisors, Mr. Orsley and Miss Burns. Celine Stark started a new rave with a different hair style everyday and Jimmy Applegate just wouldn't grow!! We ended up the first half of the year with no spirit week and everyone hoping that the second half would be a lot better. The Talent show brought great success, when Freshmen Cam LiDestri and Dan Barbone beat a group of sophomores in the comedy division with their rendition of Zeke and Zeb. We lost the Freshman-Sophomore bowl by .300 pts, and we had no chance to get the sophomores back because there was no field day. Brian Crist played on ).V. wrestling team and received a surprise full year's subscription to Playboy. Mr. Carr, who was well liked by all the students, left us that year. As the year came to a close and we were soon to be sophomores, the seniors decided that they wanted to get in a few of those pranks that they had missed in the beginning of the year, but we had grown hip to the senior tricks, though, and none paid off. As a final note, Al Memmelar's pants split as we moved up from Freshmen to Sophomores on Class Day. 126 THE BACK STRETCH We started out the Sophomore year with President, Donna DeWitt; Vice-President, )im Lasa-ponara; secretary, Lori Tolen and treasurer, Lori McBride. Class meetings were something to be seen with only few sophomores and sometimes not all of the officers. The purpose of our Sophomore year was to make money. Unfortunately that was something we had trouble with. It was hard starting projects with unenthusiastic classmates. Our number one way to make money was through our bake sales. No one had to worry about starvation that year, we had bake sales on a semi-weekly basis. Finally, tired of stuffing everybody's faces, we attempted to make money washing cars. At our Saturday car wash we soaked more people than cars. We came back from our defeating loss as freshmen in the Frosh-Soph bowl to override the new Freshmen with the Sophomore team of Chris Skotzko, Joel Santos, Bob Rankin, and Donna De Witt. This was our first year participating in field day in the high school. As can be guessed, we lost. We also lost in the Snow Carnival that year. The purpose was to build a sculpture with snow that followed a Valentine theme. When it was over, even the sophomores didn't know what we built. Was it any wonder we came in last? We wrote our first term papers that year and learned the real meaning of delay. People were still turning in papers due before Christmas vacation at the end of the year. Those were the general happenings of our sophomore year but we had people that made our year unique. )im Applegate grew Vi that year. |oel Santos caught a vanilla shake with his face, with a little help from Russ Kelsey and Bob Rankin. Speaking of Bob, our computer wizard sent a message about Mr. Assalian to another school's computer. Things got steamed when the other school called and relayed the message. Things were jumping as Caterina found out, when she received a present of frogs legs in her locker. Infatuation ruled some people that year. Edwig Plotnick was in love in English class. She put Edwig Helminski on her paper. judy Kahn, a new addition to our class, held the all time record with eight boyfriends that year. We finally ended the year as sophomores with everyone saying, Thank God, that's over. 127 THE HOME STRETCH We ran into our junior year under the completely domineering force of four determined women. In control of our unbalanced books was Rebecca Meehan, who frequently lost her way to the office and meandered the halls until Mrs. Sherwin demanded her presence. Our secretary, Caterina Fazzino, could always be found keeping updates on not only class activities but classmates' activities as well. Our rowdy vice-president. Sue Miller, had a laugh which could frequently be heard echoing throughout the school corridors. Finally, our paranoid president, )anet )acob, could be seen with her little blue notebook, giving daily instructions to her cabinet. Our first major project was that of Operation Washup — a car wash that would wash anything in sight for a dollar. The operation was a huge success thanks to Lori McBride's collection of cars and Mary Rysinger's clump of auto cleaners. The car wash continued successfully until some unknown participant decided that Spic and Span would be a new substitute for vinyl roof cleaner. It took Steve Mensch's detective work to discover that the original red finish was quickly turning a lighter shade of pink. Ellen Gloster's bottom could be seen smoking down the hall from the friction created by the infamous drag races of the Costello clan. )ohn never did get a snowmobile license and sometime that year the echoes of MRRR could be heard coming from the mouths of the “New Wave. Rick Germain decided to show his Christmas spirit by throwing a party. Everyone was put in the right mood by the mistletoe and some bottles of cheer. The party came to a close when the threat of mono spread and Anne Mitchell decided she wanted to learn Mr. Loffredo's artificial respiration technique first hand. Linda Reese decided to go fishing, but she couldn't find a lake. Due to )im and Dave's ingenuity, she was able to use her locker instead. Everyone discovered Lake Glenmere. What we couldn't figure out, though, was how the moon came out during the day. We suspected that )anet knew. Keith lohnson decided to go au naturel in the middle of town one winter night. It was fine until the light turned green and Diane left Keith and his pants at the town square. Sue Kayner could be seen with her gang chanting “junior Birdmen and flapping their wings. Sue may still be trying to get Mr. Hoerup to join. Prom time rolled around, and once again Karen Rombousek was sure to go. The rest of us had a good time watching The Incredible Hulk. The Math Department had their hands full when 75% of their students had to start back at square one with another year of trig. We took a subtle hint when at least six faculty members resigned. Didn't we use our Right Guard? We left our seats as the jolly juniors to return in September as the almighty senior class of 1980. THE FINISH As seniors, we had three officers that were new to school politics. President Stephen Bean, who could be seen every spring singing in another school musical, Vice President Rebecca Meehan, the veteran officer, who is also a long distance track star. Secretary Wendy Reed, who is also a volleyball stud, and finally the forever dedicated Coleen McGarry as Treasurer. We once again begin with Brian Crist on JV Wrestling . .. Mr. Siracuse's Knowledge of Driver Ed. Teaching proved itself as Lisa Crash Cavallo plowed into the back of a school bus the day after she got her driver's license ... Keith lohnson will always be remembered for his fantastic performance as the 'Goshen Gladiator' at home football games ... A new interior decorator must have visited our school when suddenly fire drill directions appeared in every room. By some strange coincidence, the Middle States Evaluation happened to be that same week. Funny! The cafeteria and courtyard never looked so good ... The senior class triumphantly won Spirit Week with a little help from Lori McBride, Stehanie Teicher, and Stephen Bean who, that rainy night before, stole four tires for Greased Lightning from Ricky Germain's grandmother.. . Ali Davachi, an Iranian Immigrant, became very unpopular during the Iranian Crisis. However, he quickly regained his popularity when he volunteered to hold Mr. Assalian hostage ... A great inspiration to the American people occurred when in the midst of a world crisis with Afghanistan and Iran, the young United States Hockey team kicked the Russians' butts ... One day in AP Biology, Ray Schlag, Dave Wallace, )oel Santos, and Russel Kelsey, in order to perform their fetal pig dissection in the proper fashion, decided to perform their operations in surgeons' smocks, masks, and gloves ... We'll never forget the day, Tom Boxman and )imi Wright crashed their cars head-on while going over a bridge. Another unforgettable addition to our high school family was our beloved parking lot attendant who came to be known by those who loved him as Rent-A-Cop ... During our Senior year, the entertaining talents of the three stooges gave way to the new arrival on the comedy scene ... the immortal... Benny Hill!... We'll never forget the day before Easter Vacation when Kelly Meland and loanne Drake each dressed up as the Easter Bunny. Too bad it wasn't rabbit hunting season! The Senior Class finally won field day day ... Goshen High finally had a field day!. .. Keith )ohnson's champagne breakfast at The Smuggler was a big hit until an unexpected guest showed up. By the way, Mr. Assalian how much of The Smuggler do you own right now? Mike Glancey allotted Mr. Hoerup 16 strokes in a golf match on the class trip. Despite Mr. Hoerup's gallant effort, Mike immediately made up those 16 strokes on the first hole. Mr. Hoerup did eventually get his pitching wedge out of the tree. Immediately after stepping off the bus at Tamiment Resort, Chris Costello and Stephen George took a peculiar fascination towards the actions of the Tamiment grounds crew as they operated their sprinkler system. Only a few hours later, a stream of water from that very same sprinkler system could be seen pouring into )udy Kahn's window. Over the past year the Senior class has been witness to what appeared to be its own office affair. Class officers Coleen and Steve worked especially well together. Also Harry Fleming decided that the Men's room in the Goshen Theatre would be a good place to take a nap. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT CLASS OF 1980 Donna Arsenault leaves the computer room forever! The people who remained steadfast through missed deadlines and missing pictures, and through a carnival and dance that were not quite as lucrative as one might have wished, deserve a hearty thanks.
