GOSHEN CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL CCS Administration presents GLADIATOR ’79 . '1 starring The Senior Class of 1979 with Freshmen Sophomores Directed by The CHS Faculty Juniors Life is a play and the world, a stage. We are the actors cast in very special roles. We all portray unique characters — ourselves. Because life is complex, every segment of life is a play in itself. Although Goshen Central High School is but a small part of our world, it has served as the theater and the stage for a play — a musical in which each of us has played a key role. Songs have been a significant part of the drama of high school life, which has been a combination of comedy and tragedy. The lyrics of our day have captured the emotions reflected in our musical: pride and frustration, joy and sorrow, laughter and tears. Equally important in our musical has been the large cast of characters. Each of us has been a star in his own right, assuming a different role at various times. Yes, we have all taken part in a play, in life, in school life because the basic elements of drama are the major ingredients of human experience: feelings. desires, conflicts, and reconciliations. From September thru June, five days a week, GLADIATOR 79 has run at our theater, our high school. We have all been actors on stage portraying characters in a play, a play without a script, a play whose first performance is its last because every second is different and unrepeatable. This yearbook is the playbill for our performance. It allows us to relive mentally the song and the drama of the past year in our living theater — Goshen Central High School. 2 The curtain rises, Russell Breckwoldt There are places Lori Yurchuk in Sewing Class Terence Meehan in the Senior Locker Sec- Til remember all my life Beth Killenberger in the Art Room Though some will change The Jr. Bird- Men in Cafeteria II 5 Tom Bartnick 6 Some will go and some will remain. It was only the second season In Mr. Dean Ouderkirk's 10-year coaching stint that the Goshen Varsity Football Team finished under .500. However, like the Goshen teams of the past, this year's squad provided its followers with many exciting moments: Bob Weslow-ski's fumble recovery that led to his 45-yard touchdown run. the defense that prevented Valley Central from scoring in a first down, goal to go situation with only a few seconds remaining in the game, and the convincing 21-7 victory over Warwick that kept the Spirit Trophy in Goshen for another year. The team also had its share of outstanding individuals who made it happen out on the field. Goshen sent eight men to the Exceptional Seniors Game this year: Tom Bartnick. Mike Costello. Scott Jensen. Tom Jones. Jeff Miller. Paul Simms. Joe Todora, and Bob Weslowski. Costello's 466 total yardage and Jones 5 interceptions and 58 tackles earned them the team Most Valuable Player Awards at the end of the season. In addition, tight end Steve Buday, who gained 404 yards receiving, was named to the Tri-County All-Star Team. 82 JV Football: Row I — J. Labanowski, K. Montgomery. J. Schwartz. Row 2 — B. Corwin. M. Then there were things that do not appear in the record books: the spirit exhibited by the players, cheerleaders, and loyal fans, the pride that was kept intact all season long despite all the pressures, and the determination to come out game after game with the same intensity. At the awards dinner. Coach Romano stressed the importance of teamwork, not only in soccer, but also in every facet of our lives. Our Class Officers were President Anne Kragh. Vice-President Drew Ellerlcamp. Secretary Judy Weinberger, and Treasurer Debbie Swanson. To start us off. David Lerner got locked in his friend s locker— by accident, of course! Robert Peterson got caught looking at a Playboy book which he said belonged to Danny Dzierzek. but Mr. Assa-lian and the faculty seemed to enjoy it most during their lunch hour! Mr. Assalian. while trying to prove himself hip, attempted to do the bump at the junior-senior prom. Watch out everybody — we hear he s got some wicked hips. Donna Quinto got caught having a cigarette the hard way when Dee locked her in the bathroom. Scott Thornton kept coming to school with a dirty chin. Grey could be heard asking Scott everyday how his beard was coming along. And to think we thought it was dirt! If anyone wanted any fireworks, you could call Tony Kujawski or Phil Masiello. after they came back from their 5-Day Vacation! One boring day in science, Jean and Cathy were passing personal notes, and Mr. Kujawski pinned them on the bulletin board, for an extra added attraction to his bulletin of molecules. Nuzz showed true team spirit when she got suspended for leaving school to get her skis for the meet. Some people have it: some people don't. After lunch mods, we could see Barb and all her friends scraping green beans off the floor, under the careful eye of Mrs. Rysinger. She didn t enjoy their BIG BEAN JAMBOREE as they described it. Those two Guatemalans. Miguel and Italo. swept all the awards at the Academic Awards Assembly. There might be a gas shortage today, but there sure wasn't one in Mr. Kujawski's class when Vinceter lost control and got sent down to the office along with a few other clowns! Robbie McCarthy visited Mr. Cohen's class through the window, and his host didn't even know he was there until the end of class! Randy Youngman and Anne Kragh got a wash at the car wash, and they didn't even have to pay a dollar! Trish Degan, while displaying some of her greatest talents, tried to climb up the tennis courts' fence. Trisha could later be found hobbling up to the Middle School to sell tickets, holding the leg of her pants which was torn in half. We keep telling her though. If at first you don t succeed, try. try again! Then we said Good-bye to the hill and Hello to the prison. 147 ACT II: SILLY SOPHOMORES We began our sophomore year in a spanking new high school. For the longest time the Social Studies and English sections were plagued by continual door slamming. Also this year there was a new thing called by the administration structured study hall . We soon learned what they meant. Our officers were President Marie Nuzzolese. Vice President Trisha Degan who moved later in the year and was replaced by Judy Weinberger. Secretary Bonnie Mitton, and Treasurer Debra Swanson. The craze that fall was banana buzzers. Full-scale wars had developed in the lunch room before Mr. Assalian announced that possession of rubber band projectiles was a three-day suspension offense. Though we had great plans, there was no Spirit Week this year because we didn t own the walls. Th is was the first year we d been exposed to one of the substitute teachers we remember most fondly. Melvin Funn whom Jeff Soons immortalized in his satirical tract, The Lore of Substitutes. Nothing could phase him or distract him from his work, not even the constant roar of wuppy cushions in Mr. Helminski's 10 H English Class. Sometime in December. Debbie Dexter appeared at a class meeting. We would see her again . . . someday. In January. Mrs. Littlefield s grand fund-raising idea, the Orange and Grapefruit Sale, became a reality. Some memorable moments include Mark Stiller s driving around peddling fruit in 10-degree weather with no shirt on, and we can't forget Debbie Swanson's slamming of Mr. Wall s car door on Scott Thornton's finger. All in all. the sale was an immense success, and we were $ 1,500 out of the red. One success followed another. We thumped the Freshmen by 300 points in the Frosh Soph Bowl, and we won the Freshman-Sophomore Basketball Game assisted by the rousing support of our transvestite cheerleaders. Costello. Irwin. Fabish, Thornton. Hopkins, and Montgomery. Some people never change. The Talent Show was graced this year by the Not-Ready-For-Talent-Show Players, a group of misfit sophomores who believed in Monty Python. They lost. This year also saw the revival of the Robert Hall business suit, thanks to our very own Dr. Leslie. The year ended with a real shocker. Ace geometry student. Bonnie Mitton, nailed a 100 on the geometry regents. Will miracles ever cease? We were soon to find out. even as June ended, and we were free at last! A CT III: JOLL Y JUNIORS We returned in September with the promise of a fruitful year, not to mention President Scott Thornton's promise of a Junior class trip. Our other officers were Vice-President Jeff Soons. Secretary Anne Kragh, and Treasurer Jodi Innocent. The first order of business was the selection of a class advisor to work with Little Mrs-field for Mr. Wall had departed after his Oscar-winning in the class film The Ascent. The distinguished Charlie Eisenhart was selected. Our dance on September was highlighted by Randy Youngman's continual collisions with the walls. It Wasn't until the Senior Costume Dance a month later that personalities in the Junior class found expression. We saw Mickey Mouse. Raggedy Anne and Andy, and a group of Palestinian Terrorists, who seemed to turn up again and again through the year. Spirit Week in November was a great success. The Juniors stole the show with their stupendous rendition of King Kong. Weren't the Seniors aggravated? Orange and Grapefruit Sale II was held in December. Our class dynamo. Dougy Fabish, sold 64 crates, and Mike Costello sold three big ones. After the sale we were the richest organization in the school. Weren't the Seniors aggravated? At the Snow Carnival in February, we struggled to create a snow Valentine so to speak and a snow arch, so they say. Despite Jeff Soons awesome architectural achievement, we came in second to the Seniors. We had to let them win something. As it turned out, the Seniors, or rather Schrade. won the Junior-Senior Bowl, and they won Field Day. We could afford to be a very generous class. Also, during this winter of discontent, it was discovered that in our own high school darkroom the technique of superimposing various photographs was perfected by Thornton, Montgomery, and Youngman. photographers under the supervision of Andy Kujawski. As spring approached, so did the class elections. There were many memorable speeches. Among them was Judy Weinberger s epic speech: Hi. I'm Judy Weinberger, and I’m running for Vice-President. Thank you. Who writes your speeches. Judy? But Debbie Dexter s New Blood Campaign swept everyone off his feet. Her promises of a free prom, yearbook, and class trip were too much to resist. GEE. DEB. CAN WE HAVE OUR MONEY BACK? 149 We left in June, only to suffer a severe case of DeiaVu in September. ACT IV: SUPER SENIORS Our Senior year started out with something of a blood transfusion, a euphemism for left-wing proliferation. Our extinguished (sic) class officers were President Debra Dexter. Vice-President Jennifer Terpstra. Secretary Vickie Reed, and Treasurer Jodi Innocent, the only old timer. Mrs. Albanese was proud to join Mr. Eisenhart as our class advisor. To kick the year off to a good start, our President had a party whereat Debbie and Marilynn contracted poison ivy in areas we won't speak of. and Steve Buday captained Noah s Ark. Since the spirits weren t the highest. Dexter decided to have a campfire — only she forgot not to invite Chief Walker and his gang. The football team scored its greatest victory in a contest with Middletown! It was something like 51-0. wasn t it? After that. Paul Simms had a party and some people vented their ire by dumping garbage on Mr. Hatfield s lawn. Unlike the football team, the soccer team managed once again to win its fifth straight National Conference Championship and the OCL title. To our disillusionment, we learned that not everyone welcomed us with open arms when we were kicked out of Dunkin Donuts as well as Route 84 rest stop, where by the way. we managed to jam ten people in a phone booth — then the phone rang! Mr. Hendry decided he d treat some of us to a little education by taking the Seniors on a trip to see the play Hamlet. It was unanimous that Hamlet was a real cutie. Ask Vivienne Chong; she gave him several standing and whistling ovations. The Senioritas finally did something and held a costume day. With that, the students decided to decorate the cafeteria with food. Talking about historic events, Grant Gardner holds the school record with 38 suspensions. Also, Drew Ellerkamp has the record for 35 consecutive wins in tennis. Once again it was Orange and Grapefruit time, and too many had too much ambition. Then the Seniors decided to show their superiority by over-powering the juniors in the Junior-Senior Bowl and winning the Senior-Faculty volleyball game. Next, Mr. Toufectis decided to enlighten the seniors and take us to Marist College where we learned much about the dorms, ratskeller, and the round table room. To keep things going. Lucy and Rick threw a party. Following that. Debbie had a birthday party where Ricky and Drew formed a buddy system. Wendy Nelson decided to keep good relationships between the U.S. and China and got pulled over for a Chinese Fire Drill. The Reidys then had a party to which they invited a cast of characters. We had the honor of hearing the new sound of those fabulous Blues Brothers. Jeff Soons and Scott Thornton (Is that why they wore those fedoras?), as well as Lace, and the good old sound of Storm who played again . . . and again . . . and again. There was a rumor of a Toh concert, but then again it was only a rumor. Colleen Sullivan and Sharon Klinetob decided they wanted to make a career as guidance counselors during the neo-two days in March. Arlene Santos organized the Invasion of the Little People when she gave a computer demonstration for Mrs. Lyons fourth grade class up at the high school. Later, ten-year-old Dean Kurdyla held Mr. Lyons AP Calculus class in awe by beating Anne Kragh in a challenge question and explaining the simple solution to the group. Because of a record rainfall. Field Day was cancelled. We also managed to get a downpour on the Class Trip, but that didn't bother anyone, everyone managed to ride the horses. By the way Debi Brink, did you ever man age to control your horse? Also, it was noted that Terri Colgan was seen praying at the procelain altar, and somehow Todd Price got locked in the bathroom. We soon realized that Mr. Loffredo had taught us something when Bob Carey saved Marie Nuzzolese from choking at the dinner table. On that same day, the Coiter Association was founded by Raja Ramachandran Russ Breckwoldt, Tom DeGeorge. and Colin Nass. We really didn't do too much damage, although Lynda Luft broke her window. The Senior Class Play went over . . . well, it went overboard. We managed to lose money instead of gaining. Someone was thinking about us upstairs when prom time came around, and the weather was beautiful. We noticed that Dale Hughes wasn't as shy as he pretended to be. We thought Marilynn McBride had some smarts when she made the Prom Court but later learned that she had put her flowers in the freezer to keep them fresh. We had our first graduation rehearsal and shocked Dr. Leslie by standing and sitting correctly. And Mrs. Albanese was so upset with our departure, she decided to depart with us (for France). . . . And so The Last Hurrah came and passed, as graduation for the Class of 79 was cut short by a downpour. It must have meant something. 151 Mr. D. Joe was a teacher. Joe was a friend He was gentle and loving to the very end. Twenty eight years is a short life for a man, But let us remember his gifts to us, if we can. His wit and humor were part of his charm. And his wry smile any grouch would disarm. Whether baseball diamond, football field or basketball court. With a passion Joe loved and played every sport. Fair play and determination was the name of his game. Play your best to win was ever his aim. These principles he followed in the classroom Giving his students all they could consume Of pride in our country, knowledge of the past. Hope for the future, and respect that will last Acknowledging the failures in our country's history But always convinced of fhe worth of our democracy. He gave us some values on which we can depend. Mr. D. was a teacher, Mr. D. was a friend. — Phyllis Gray BACKWARD GLANCES.. . .. . REMEMBERING MR.
