Goshen—Prologue Phoenix—no, it's not the capital city of Arizona. The phoenix is the fabled bird in mythology. It was believed that only one such bird existed at any time. This bird, as large as an eagle, with brilliant scarlet and gold feathers and a melodious cry, was said to have a life cycle of 500 years. At the end of each cycle, the phoenix burned itself on a funeral pyre. Another phc-enix then rose from the ashes with renewed beauty and splendor. The young phoenix carried the remains of its parent to the altar of the sun god in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis. This bird has been the symbol of many things; the sun, immortality, and spiritual rebirth are amoung them. Parallels can also be drawn between the phoenix and high school life. The ten months of hard work, pain and sorrow, joy and glory, come to an end in June. All of this is reborn again in September, just as the new phoenix emerged from the fire.. In Goshen, the Charles J. Hooker building had housed the high school students for many years. The increase in the student population showed a need for change, and change we did. The 1976-1977 school year was a crucial one as we moved from the old building into a new one. WE, the student body, faculty, and administration, were the young phoenix which had just risen from the ashes. We carried its plummage in our hearts. The gold represented our enormous desire for victory; the scarlet symbolized the great deal of strength, determination, and fight we possessed to obtain our goals. We have encountered a new beginning. The year was a period of adjustment, but it did have its share of successes and memories. It is only fitting that our yearbook is called Phoenix for during this year, we have shared and experienced the rebirth of a system, the dawning of a new era in Goshen Central High School history. PHOENIX 1977
