Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1977 volume:

Goshen—Prologue Phoenix—no, it's not the capital city of Arizona. The phoenix is the fabled bird in mythology. It was believed that only one such bird existed at any time. This bird, as large as an eagle, with brilliant scarlet and gold feathers and a melodious cry, was said to have a life cycle of 500 years. At the end of each cycle, the phoenix burned itself on a funeral pyre. Another phc-enix then rose from the ashes with renewed beauty and splendor. The young phoenix carried the remains of its parent to the altar of the sun god in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis. This bird has been the symbol of many things; the sun, immortality, and spiritual rebirth are amoung them. Parallels can also be drawn between the phoenix and high school life. The ten months of hard work, pain and sorrow, joy and glory, come to an end in June. All of this is reborn again in September, just as the new phoenix emerged from the fire.. In Goshen, the Charles J. Hooker building had housed the high school students for many years. The increase in the student population showed a need for change, and change we did. The 1976-1977 school year was a crucial one as we moved from the old building into a new one. WE, the student body, faculty, and administration, were the young phoenix which had just risen from the ashes. We carried its plummage in our hearts. The gold represented our enormous desire for victory; the scarlet symbolized the great deal of strength, determination, and fight we possessed to obtain our goals. We have encountered a new beginning. The year was a period of adjustment, but it did have its share of successes and memories. It is only fitting that our yearbook is called Phoenix for during this year, we have shared and experienced the rebirth of a system, the dawning of a new era in Goshen Central High School history. PHOENIX 1977 We are subject to the progression of events that makes us what we are and what we will become. Goshen, New York Volume XXXVII 2 i. He is a warm and friendly individual who always seems to have a cheery word for his classes and an a-wareness of their feelings. Moreover, his smile expresses his enjoyment of teaching and students, as well as life. This individual takes great pride in his jokes and informal style of teaching. His philosophy of education claims that students may enjoy the learning process and in achieving this end he leads class discussions into small riots by encouraging creative expression. His method of teaching is geared toward arousing the imaginations of his students, allowing them to express themselves freely, and preparing them for college. For his warmth and understanding, friendliness, encouragement, devotion and leadership, not to mention his sense of humor, we proudly dedicate the Phoenix '77 to Mr. Robert Miller. This year's Youth in Government Program was a successful one for all those involved. Mr. Harold Grimm was the Citizen's Party Advisor while Mr. Michael Garr headed the People's Party. This program is designed to expose high school students (and 7th and 8th graders) to the political aspects of our society. In this program each party is responsible for choosing candidates to run for the various offices on the state and county levels. Each party is also responsible for writing and supplying information to back up their platforms. This gives students a chance to voice their opinions concerning the major issues that we are facing today and to give possible solutions to these problems. Each candidate was responsible for presenting a speech before their entire party which consists of students from six area schools. Y-in-G enables students from all over the Orange County area to come together as a group, working and learning together. County Service Day was held on March 12th. At this time the students elected to the various county positions had a chance to meet the person who is presently holding that office in the County Building in Goshen. The students involved were able to discuss platforms and other things with them at this time. Those students elected to state offices were able to travel to Albany where they met the person holding their position. 40 The Y-in-G program was a huge success and an even greater learning experience for those involved. The Flying Enchiladas This year the Flying Enchiladas once again made their way to a number of basketball games and wrestling matches. Aside from gaining new members, this year's club also received new shirts to show their school spirit. This year's shirts were bright orange with “FLYING ENCHILADAS written in bold black letters across the front. If you did not see this group of Goshen High School males, you were sure to hear them. Under the leadership of Pete Kaleita, these young men wrote their very own cheers and devised ways to amuse the spectators at every game they attended. They worked very hard to keep everyone laughing. They were Quite an attraction! Left To Right: B. Ratynski, J. Neuman, D. Patterson, V. Guarini, D. Patterson. Introduced midway through the year. The Page was a great success. The Page is a page in our local Independent Republican. It was written, laid out, and edited by Goshen High School students. These budding journalist produced a page that brought Goshen residents up to date on the news of the students and teachers of Goshen High School. Besides reporting on the organizational events of the week, the students wrote feature stories on teachers and students. Both the writers and the readers enjoyed The Page. First Row: T. Scotto, D. With a new auditorium and choir room to accustom themselves to, they still continued to put out first rate performances. Sound systems and other stage crew equipment were not complete until early spring, so there was no official Christmas concert. Musicians are tenacious however, and our pushy chorus was no exception! Up they trooped to the Orange Plaza to delight shoppers with their caroling. In March, the Choir managed to send twelve eager students to All County Chorus just a week before the March 17th opening of No No Nanette , the smash hit musical. In April, a Godspell-Hair concert on the seventeenth was ordered, followed close by the May spring concert in cahoots with the band. What a menu—if they had seen what they had to do at the beginning of the year, the combined Varsity Choir and Chorus would have numbered far below its phenominal number. A great job done. This year the band completed its second exchange program. Last spring the Goshen band traveled to Norwood, N.Y.. This year the Norwood band arrived in Goshen to complete the exchange. With the money earned from a very successful lightbulb sale, the band members are looking forward to a third exchange. The Stage Band, under the direction of Mr. Allen Greenberg, showed off its great sound in both the Christmas and Spring Concerts. They also performed at the opening of the new firehouse in Goshen. 46 Stage Band Stage Band First Row: B. Labanowski, D. Chao, J. Vandenberg, R. Ramachandran, D. Prosser, R. Breckwoldt, J. Wolek, R. Student Senate 48 The Student Senate was busy helping to organize the new Goshen High School. Again this year, they sponsored the annual magazine drive. This provided money for the Student Senate to help ease the yearbook out of the red. The Student Senate also had a jewelery sale before Christmas. This was a success of which the officers could be proud. The Thanksgiving day and Christmas drives held by the Student Senate provided food and toys for the needy. In the spring they held a talent show which was enjoyed by everyone involved. Honor Society This years Honor Society started off the year by holding elections. Unopposed Mark Thompson, Tom Rankin, Shereen Brackfield, and Darla Hughes were unanimously elected as officers. Their first big event was an election day bake sale at the voting poles. Although they blew out the election machine with their coffee pot, they were able to save face by selling delicious bake goods and hot cider. In January they sponsored a college tea at which Goshen graduates described their college experiences. They sold doughnuts and soda at the spring musical so that they could attend “A Chorus Line. The Honor Society completed their year with induction and a tea. Honor Society: First Row: B. Weslowski, R. Bulaga, S. Brackfield, L. Davis, J. Monastra. Second Row: T. Rankin, A. Dudley, D. On certain Saturdays of the year they breakfasted at B.O.C.E.S. with other seniors from Orange County. They were entertained by different speakers. Some of the topics discussed were money, wok cooking, pottery, language, and history. In the fall, they went to New York to see the play the Poor Murderer. They finished the year with dinner at the Flo-Jean Restaurant and a nature walk. First Row: T. Vriesma, J. Sosler, W. Montgomery, J. Masiello, W. Yohannon. Second Row: B. Labonowski, T. Rankin, M. When the competition ended, the saying expressed the team's feelings quite well, but the other teams probably wished that Goshen never showed up. Our A team won one for the coach by scoring a grand total of 14 points. This was Goshen's second playoff championship in the team's history. The A team also captured the Division A title by scoring 54 points. The B team placed third in the same division with 36 points. The top Goshen scorers were Tom Rankin, Jeff Soons, and Mary Flannery. Tom and Jeff represented our school as part of the DUSO League Team in the New York State competition. According to Coach Lyons, having two Goshen teams provided a chance for more students to compete and gain experience. This should prove to be an advantage for the teams of the future. The Goshen Junior High Math Team also had a good year. They placed second in their division with 57 points. The team's top scorer was Bob Rankin. Junior High Math Team 50 Junior High Math Team First Row: J. Santos, R. Rankin, M. Lemma, J. Santos, B. Christ. Second Row: S. Cox, F. Reiss, B. Meinking, L. Stewart, S. Hass, Mr. Lemma. There is a saying that goes this way: It's better late than never. The Goshen High School Math Team made their dramatic entrance at the playoffs held at the New Paltz Campus of the State University of New York about twenty minutes late. The newly founded C.B. Club was a great addition to Goshen High. The group, led by Mr. Minto, was popular among many of our students. Students were instructed on the use of the C.B. They learned how to prevent the theft of their C.B.'s. They discussed the procedures used for getting licences to operate them. The group raised enough money by raffling a C.B. radio to buy one for the use of the school. C.B. Club C.B. Club First Row T. Harris, N. Hopkins, T. McGlocklin, R. Smith, R. Besaw, R. David, Mr. Minto This year's bowling club, under the very capable direction of Mr. Tether, made their way to the Middletown Lanes every Thursday afternoon to enjoy three exciting games. Everyone involved not only improved their game and learned more about it, but most importantly had a great time while doing so. This year as in the past a bowling tournament was held which enabled everyone to put his particular skills to good use. This year's program was a very fun-filled one. It was an excellent way to unwind from a hard day at school. Bowling Club First Row M. Miller, R. Fogelman, D. Hughes, W. Kozireski, S. George, C. Sanok, C. Reynolds, C. Lidestri, Second Row N. Among the things done this year, they have tried to stop the inhuman experiments done in museums. They have sent letters to congress commenting on commercial whaling and the Alaskan Aerial Wolf hunt. They worked hard to protect the rights of animals. Seaterettes First Row: M. Matta, T. Green, M. Malanowski, D. Brink. Second Row: C. Bleffert, J. Terpstra. Third Row: S. Lempka, S. Although our team didn't have as many victories as in the past, the element of spirit was always there. Goshen is proud of this fine group of young men for trying their best throughout the season. Although Goshen's adversaries were very powerful, many of which were large schools, our team never gave up. Goshen held up very favorably under great pressure and adverse condition. Great moves by all of the Gladiator team provided a very exciting atmosphere. Team captains, Tom Losey and Joe Boyd inspired this fine team to some very exciting victories. We are even proud of our defeats because none were lost by more than 10 points, whereas our leads went as high as 32 points. This year, the seniors on the team were 20 in number. They included Boyd, Donovan, Thompson, Mabee, Weslowski, Wallace, Guarino, Monastra, Ganley, Kaleita, Ward, Labanowski, Myruski, McGarry, Schmer, Jones, VanOrden, Losey, Pistone, and Bolster. The combination of spirit, skill, and teamwork gave our team an excellent season with a record of 17 wins, 4 loses. Craig Price was the second highest scorer in the National Conference with 22 goals and 10 assists. Our explosive offense and tough defense was consistent all year. Our minute men performed well when the starters needed a rest. Goshen's success can be attributed to the fine performances of single players senior Mike Kleinwaks, and juniors Dave Wright, Dave Patterson, B.K. Boley, and Mike Martin. The doubles teams of Raja Ramachandran and Drew Ellerkamp, and of Bob Jessup and Justin Neuman were consistent all year, winning key matches. These factors enabled Goshen to win the Orange County Team Championships for the second consecutive year. In the Orange County Invitational Tournament, Dave Wright was the singles champion; B. K. The starting lineup, consisting of Joe Manastra, Cliff Price, Craig Charles, and Chris Cook was one of the best that Goshen has ever seen. Their only other loss prevented them from taking their division title. Senior superlatives were given awards for their specialties by Darla Hughes and Andrew Huben. The class presented money to the school to go towards an I.D. laminating machine. The crowds stood up and applauded Mrs. Seely, Mr. McGinnis, and Mr. Garr as a final farewell. As the classes moved up, the Class of 1977 was pushed out into the cold, cold world. Loving our adorable class, the Seniors decided to adopt us, only to our surprise that they would send us to the wrong rooms. We were told how lucky we were because we had a new Assistant Principal. We realize now how lucky we really were because he didn't know how to use the P.A. system. It took us only two weeks to find our leaders and what leaders they were—Tina Lucente—President, Mary Croswell—Vice President, Laurie Kaynor—Secretary, and Ann Scott—Treasurer. We knew there was something wrong when no teacher would volunteer to be our advisors. Dr. Leslie appointed Miss Domac and Mr. Reukauf. We started off as the record breaking money Freshman class. Dr. Leslie congratulated us. Miss Domac came through with an idea for spirit week resulting in a tie for first place. The freshman class was confused. They didn't know whether they were in General Science or Sex Education when Mr. Reukauf displayed the anatomy of the female body in full view on his movie screen. The freshman class was surprised when Mr. Reukauf had to leave the room grabbing the picture as he went. The Freshman brains got together and brought us through to a victory in the Freshman Sophomore bowl. At the end of the year elections rolled around and Phil Downs stole the crowd's votes when he promised a beer vending machine and cigarette machine in every bathroom. It went well with his slogan, Phill up with Downs . Sophomore Year We came into this year with high hopes and officers Phil Downs, Robin Hunter, Debbie Dewitt, and Ann Scott. Our first job was to find a new advisor since Miss Domack had quit. Who was the best person to ask? The new Spanish teacher—Mrs. Hunter. She accepted, little knowing what she was getting into. Where was our President when John Wallace decided the homeroom representatives were not sufficient and decided to take over and re-elect? Was he out buying cigarettes to sell in the bathroom? John's bright idea was to sponsor a spaghetti dinner and everyone was to bring in a jar of sauce. The trouble was that there wasn't anyone at the dinner. We lost the few customers we did have when Andy Huben and Tom Simmons decided to take on the white waters, canoeing through the cafeteria and into the halls of the Hooker Building. What money we did make in the Freshman Year was soon lost when John Wallace got up the Bicentennial Spirit by buying pencils. The business was good until John forgot to take down the names of those who were selling. Wallace came through with another good idea when he purchased Goshen High tote bags, only to find they didn't sell well. With only three minutes to pass between classes, Judy Cassel and Jean Dineen found it easier to get there by roller skates. This new method came to an abrupt termination when Mr. Hoerup sat them down in the middle of the hall and compelled them to remove the skates. Judy and Jean were late for class as a result. We lost the Freshmen-Sophomore Bowl, but no fear, there's always next year. Judy Cassel and Jack Higgins failed their Geometry Regents, but no despair, there's always next year in 12-2 to try again. Our final bow occurred when Mr. Reukaff joined Miss Domak in deserting our class. Junior Year We entered the Junior Year slightly depressed— Where had all our money gone? Can you answer that question, John? Mary Flannery took on the chore of building up our bank account, but who was the Vice-President? John Wallace was. Laurie Kaynor and Judy Cassel were there to help Mary see to it that John did not spend any money. We knew our class was doing well when the attendance for our class meeting was down to six people, four of whom were the class officers. Mr. Hoerup received a warning, to either shut his window, or shut his mouth. The most spirit we ever had was at our tail gate bake sale—too bad we had to give away the food. Luckily, the car wash was a big success, thanks to John Guarino, who brought all his cars. Everyone thought it was funny when they saw water coming out of Marie Jubala's socks, only to turn and find Robert Jones stuffing a hose down her pants. I bet that cooled you off, huh Marie? The Junior Class kept up the good record by losing the Junior-Senior Bowl. The Junior Class decided that the Seniors may have had more brain power than they, but the Juniors had more creativity. Therefore, we challenged them to a contest in decorating Christmas Trees, only to find the tree swept away by Maude, the janitoress. We then used our physical strength to overpower them in the Junior Senior Basketball Game. Further, there was a battle of the sexes when Brian Labanowski and Judy Cassel ran against each other for Student Senate President. Brian's only pitfall was his speech writer and song arrangement. Who wants to be the boss, Brian? Everybody was overtaken by Andy Huben's charm and his campaign promises; little did they know! Marie Jurbala lost her temper when Huben's mafia sabotaged her posters. Jack and Judy, after failing the regents in January and June, find out that it is another half year in 12-2 with Mr. Basla. And onward we move, anticipating the new high school. Senior Year We entered this year with plenty of knowledge and wisdom. Unfortunately, we didn't know where anything was. It was a new experience for everybody, especially for our officers, Andy Huben, Darla Hughes, Sheila Degan, and Kelli Case. We started off the year with a boom when a multitude of people showed up for the first class meeting of the year and signed up for all the committees. Laurie Kaynor and Richard Keller are still searching for the people on the prom committee. Michael Klienwaks was nominated the host of the year. The biggest upset of the year was Mr. Assalian going a whole half a year without the P.A. system. Judy Cassel and Shiela Degan were insulted when they were told they weren't permitted to talk in study hall. It didn't seem to bother them though, for they made up for it in the 5-minute passing time. The lack of spirit in the new school this year had us postponing the time of spirit week until finally we decided not to have it. Our first money making activity was football concessions. There was no lack of spirit there. In fact, it was so crowded we couldn't even move. More than enough spirit was shown at the Junior-Senior basketball game when Richard Keller, John Wallace, Dick Murphy, Jim Colgan, Joe Suresky, and Mike Bach showed their sexy legs with their cheering routines. They cheered us on to victory. By the way, who's captain next year? Our class was really brought together with the sleigh rides every Saturday night. It made it so much more fun when we warmed up at Michael's and Mark's afterwards. It's January and Jack and Judy finally passed their regents in Geometry with a little help from Mr. Basla. How much did you pay him, you guys? The seniors finally got a privilege when they got their own, private bathroom. The only quandary here was getting out with the underclassmen picketing outside. Beverly Cathy and Karen Riedy were heard asking Who's been smoking in our bathroom? Who could forget that night when Andy Hugen and Lisa Johnson spent the night at Troop F. There was a bomb scare at the station and they were found hanging around. Being arrested didn't bother Lisa—she was her same old self. She talked and talked .... but the funny part about it was that they were sprung awfully quick. Did you have connections Andy? The Seniors went into the Senior-Junior bowl with serious hearts, only to be shot down by Mr. Hendry. He made them remove their gowns and fake noses; but they lost anyway. Our biggest money-making project was the car wash. We made two dollars. Nobody will forget May 24 when Jean Dineen made it to homeroom she must have had her rollerskates on. Another senior privilege was leaving early and coming in late. That was a big break for the handful of people who have 1st and 7th mods free. Keith Maybee and Mark Thompson turn 18 and receive a playboy magazine at their party. How come all you guys were in the laundry room all night? The C.I.A. agents were hot on their trail they found there was a leak in the prom court votes. Dr. Leslie cleared up the problem fast. The class trip was one to always remembered. Ben Wes-lowski got his hair wet. On the way down Bus 3 fit 10 people in the bus bathroom. It came to an abrupt halt when the lack of oxygen caused Darla Hughes to stop the fun, and Lisa Johnson got sick. Mark Thompson got another 300 brownie points when they had Mr. Toffectus on the edge of the fountain and Mark saved him by pulling him back. Everyone had to be back at the buses at 7:30 except for Andy, Michael, and Tom. They had an excuse—the ride broke. What were the names of those girls? Sue Puzio and Jack Higgins felt the electricity when they played husband and wife in the Senior Class play. No one knew the relationship would continue after the play was over. We've come and gone through a lot of experiences, some good and some, well ... We've lived through Mr. Assalian's announcements. Dr. Leslie's speeches, four class advisors and Andy's promises that never came. The Class of 1977 marched out of the Charles J. Hooker building to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance with tears in their eyes and smiles on their faces. The Right Reverend Monseingor Joseph McCaffrey gave both the invocation and benediction. Shereen Brack-field and Mary Flannery gave the class addresses, while Rose-anne Bulaga, Joseph Monastra, Thomas Rankin, and Wendy Yohannon made the introductions.
