Here was the reason we found the library a place that was conducive for work and study. The second view is also familiar to us. Here she is checking the card catalogue for books which she obligingly did for us many times. Although the librarian is often one of the un-sung members of the school staff, we feel that Miss Updike deserves our humble recognition. Therefore, the 1967 Yearbook Staff dedicates our book to her untiring efforts in making the library a better place for all of us. 22 TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication 22 Administration 24 Faculty 26 Staff 39 Seniors 42 Sports 62 Underclassmen 86 Activities 100 Awards 120 GOSHEN CENTRAL SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION Harold J. Football New Coach Shows Team the Winning Way In his first year at Goshen, Coach Sam Curko helped to transform the Goshen football team into one of the most powerful gridiron machines in the league. The rigors of training, under Coach Curko and his assistants, John Miletich, John MacFadden, lames Wolfe, and Richard Dow, paid off in a spectacular six-game winning streak. Co-captains Mike Slesinski and John Mahoney and their teammates opened the season with Goshen hosting Nanuet on the Oscar W. Gustafson Field. Although up against a tough team, Goshen took advantage of several costly fumbles to impede Nanuet's scoring and move the pigskin for a 20-6 victory. Outstanding players of the day were Tim Schofield and Vaughn Moore. The next week the Gladiators were off to Deposit to capture a second non-league victory. With Ted Soto and Jan Bynum scoring thirteen points in the first quarter, Goshen held its lead throughout the game, and finished on top, 20-12. 63 Gray Moore and Mahoney Impress LEFT: Tension shows on the sidelines. LOWER LEFT: Bach springs to haul one down. BELOW: Schofield eludes the grasp of would-be tackier. Goshen squeezed out its first league victory when it defeated Minisink Valley 13-7 in a home game. Trailing 7-0 in the first half, Goshen ended a drive down field in the third quarter with a touchdown by Vaughn Moore and an extra point by Ted Soto. With about two minutes remaining in the game, Don Gray culminated another march down field with the winning touchdown. Recording the score was the new electric scoreboard, which was formally dedicated at half-time. Livening up after a close game, Goshen ran over Monroe-Woodbury, its second OCL competitor, 32-7. Moving the pigskin mostly on the ground, Don Gray, Vaughn Moore, and monster-man John Mahoney all enjoyed first half touchdowns while Jan Bynum racked up another two in the third quarter. Spirit of Determination Characterizes Six Win Season The Monroe-Woodbury game found Coach Curko in an unusual position. An assistant coachat Monroe the previous year, Mr. Curko now competed against his old school. Monroe realized too late that it had lost more than just an assistant. With a perfect record behind them, Goshen met Highland Falls on the home field to shut out the visitors 21-0. The high point of the day was Vaughn's 84-yard run through four tacklers for the third touchdown. Next to fall to the Gladiators was Cornwall, to the tune of 27-13. With Don Gray scoring twice in the first quarter, Goshen took an early lead. Also scoring were Tim Schofield and John Mahoney. Here, you take it. No, I don't want it! You . . . Goshen suffered its first defeat, 14-21, at the hands of Valley Central. Trailing 14-0 after the third quarter, the Vikings made a comeback for the most shocking upset of the season. Facing their arch-rivals, Warwick, for the final game of the season, the Gladiators sustained a stinging 0-35 loss. Goshen finished the '66 season in a tie for second place. 67 TOP LEFT: Coach Innocent surveys the action. TOP RIGHT: Harragin and opponent knock heads in struggle for the ball. Soccer Goshen Booters Have Great Season 1966 found Goshen's soccer team in good shape. With Mr. Hoerup handling the JV squad, Coach Innocent managed the varsity team. Captains Charles Tears, Abe Vis-ser, and Terry Burr led the team to an over-all 10-5-1 record, Goshen's best yet. Opening a perfect season in non-league matches, the Burke game saw Mick Harragin, Dave Mance, and Abe Visser score goals for a 3-1 victory. Four days later the Gladiators returned from Fallsburgh with a 5-2 triumph. Meeting Newburgh's new team, the booters walked away with a 6-1 victory, including penalty kicks by Mick Harragin, Dave Mance, and high-scorer Tom Davis. With many of its second string in the starting line-up, Goshen again trimmed Burke, 2-1, in a rematch at the end of the season. Putting their best foot forward in OCL matches, the Gladiators beat their first league opponent, Chester, 4-2. Soon after, they sent Otisville home with a 3-1 setback. 1st ROW: Roe, Dutkiewicz, Harragin, Tears, Burr, Visser, Davis, R. Anderson, Bennett. 2nd ROW: Coach Innocent, Carroll, J. Post, Conklin, Arluck, Monat. 70 The third league game, at Florida, proved the hardest-fought game of the season. After holding the Spartans to a 1-1 tie, Tom Davis scored his second goal of the day in the first overtime. However, Florida did not give up and somehow managed to tie the score with just two seconds left in the second overtime. With Abe Visser scoring Goshen's only goals, the hooters were beaten by Washingtonville 0-1 and 2-4. Chester avenged itself, 0-3, and Florida topped Davis's two goals to squeeze out a 3-2 decision. Valley Central sneaked past Abe Visser's goal with a penalty kick to edge Goshen, 2-1. To end the season on a victorious note, Goshen dumped Cornwall, 6-1 and 6-2. Jack LaBurt's goal in overtime gave the Gladiators their second victory over Otisville, 2-1, and Tom Davis scored the winning goal in the 2-1 squeeze past Valley Central. Harragin heads one in as opponents stand by powerless. 71 Vanderschaaf tries to sneak through Washics' line. Wrestling Heavyweights Show the Way 1st ROW: Bradford, Ptak, Freimuth, J. Scarth, Rich, and Memmelaar Go Undefeated in League Cad tries to keep off his back. Guided by mentors Scarano and Craft, the G.C.S. wrestlers completed a satisfying season. Winning six of their twelve meets, the grapplers finished third in the O.C. L., trailing only Cornwall and Valley Central. The forte of the wrestling squad was the heavyweight division which held a decisive edge over the rest of the league and treated their followers to exciting triumphs. Additionally, Geoff Scarth and Richard Rich, seniors, and Cad Memmelaar went undefeated in league competition. The O.C.L. tournament saw five of Goshen's finest displaying their wares. Doug Stewart, Cad Memmelaar, Rich Rich, Geoff Scarth and Herb King all made respectable showings, as Herb King's first place highlighted Goshen's participation. Since all the losses were decided by one or two matches, Goshen came much closer to winning the championship than the record would indicate. Losing only three team members through graduation, our wrestling squad looks forward to next year with high hopes. 73 I Basketball Team Has Disappointing Season Top: Coach Milctich has a Erick up his sleeve. The season’s gem was the victory over our cross town rival Burke Catholic 50-40. Vic Fleming, co-captain and fast moving forward, was Goshen's high scorer and an honorable mention on the all county basketball team. Brian Caplicki hustled at right forward for the most improved player’s award. Returning next year with Brian will be big center Hank Girardin to give it another try. SKI TEAM This year for the first time the Goshen Ski Team is listed in the sports section. With its newly won recognition as a varsity sport, the ski team hit the slopes and tacked down third place in the section nine and also won three races in county competition. Skiing advisor Walter Kennett along with Mr. Dunn and Miss Versusky guided their charges on week-end jaunts to Holiday Mountain, West Point and places north. The highlight of the season was the trip to Belleayre. Varsity ski letters were presented to six team members who had scored fifteen or more points. Team high scorer Jamie Monat led the way followed by Fred Kennett, Jack LaBurt, Bill Paul, Dave Harragin and Ron Grippe. Additionally, Nancy Greenman nailed down high scoring for the girls. Two seventh graders gave promising indications. Bill Goodmen received a medal for being first in Orange County Junior Division Slalom and Giant Slalom at Orange County Park while Ted Dunn won a second place silver medal for his efforts in the Section-Nine Junior Division Races. A busy fund raising season was also generated by President Lynne Ryder and Vice President Nancy Greenman. The club held a fashion show, movie, and a dance. These activities were recorded and audited faithfully by Secretary Carrie Coon and Treasurer Laurie Tamburr. Jamie Monat and Nancy Greenman show their championship form while Laurie Tamburr rides the tow-bar. Tennis Team Comes In Second in Orange County Leagut R. Grippe, M. Harragin, D. Harragain, E. Hansen, T. Burr, R. Fogg, W. Carr, T. Jones, B. Soto, R. Szefe, F. Kennett, R. Dickover, T. Soto, J. Monett, H. Fogg, coach Osgood. Tennis proved to be Goshen's best 67 spring sport with its better than ever season and second place standings in the O.C. L. The Goshen Net-Hoppers opened their season with set backs from Monroe-Woodbury, 2-3, and Highland Falls, 2-3, but changed this gloomy streak by dumping Valley Central 4-1 . From this point on, Goshen held its winning streak, taking second place in the O.C. L. by revenging itself 3-2 over Monroe -Woodbury and bombing Valley Central, 5-0. With these victories, Goshen became a serious threat to first place Highland Falls as a contender for the highest scoring team in the league, and with thoughts of first place in mind met the Highlanders for a showdown. The match, however, went against the Goshenites as the opposition and a heat wave united to hand them a 0-5 setback. The outstanding payers of the season were our Szefe-Dutkiewicz team of second doubles and Kennett-Monat team at third doubles who both came within a game or two of perfect seasons. Burr and Grippe at first doubles added to our strength in doubles while Harragin and Soto held up their end at singles. Much of the credit for our tennis victories should go to Mr. Osgood who has faithfully encouraged the growth of tennis as a sport at Goshen. Track Under the sway of a new track coach. Mr. Wolfe, Goshen's trackmen went through a building season this year. Although most of our trackers were relatively new and inexperienced, our pole vaulter Geoff Scarth distinguished himself and indeed saved the season with his vaulting proficiency. Geoff set a new pole vaulting record at the O. C. I. A. A. meet when he cleared the bar at thirteen feet and three days later set another record with a thirteen foot, six and one quarter inch vault. Geoff was also honored by representing Goshen at the state track meet. Next season promises to be a year for track. Although we will not have Geoff at the pole, there will be others such as Herb King and the Moores promising good records. Geoff shows record setting form. now 1 T Camobell W Anderson, J. Stewart, G. In spite of our undaunted spirit, the team was not able to match the style of ball played by the other clubs. Two victories, however, were noted in Goshen's favor. The first of these was a 19-9 romp over Chester in which homers by Don Gray and Charlie Tears sparked a Goshen hitting spree. The second victory was over Monroe Woodbury, 8-4, where Tom Davis and Brian Caplicki led the batting while Gordy Morrell held his own on the mound. Although the season was not the best, our baseball coaches should be congratulated for their effort and enthusiasm on the field. Vic Fleming dives into first base. And indeed the cast captured and projected the intentions of the authors. The setting is Brigadoon, a magic village in Scotland which appears every hundred years out of the highlands mist, only to disappear after a single day. Mix this with a tragic love situation, two wayward Americans who chance upon the scene, a second love ent angle -ment, and season freely with lively songs and dances and soon you have an audience captivating potion. Brenda Witt and Ted Soto shared top honors as Fiona and Tommy Albright respectively. Urrp! Hoppity - Hooper Hoppity Hooper, the bow-tied frog created by the Freshman Class, captured first place in Goshen's first annual Snow Carnival. Second Prize went to the Juniors' Batman, while the Seventh Grade earned five dollars with its Third Price entry, Myrtle the Turtle. That night, Nancy Hoffman and Vic Fleming reigned as King and Queen of the Snow Carnival at the biggest dance ever held at Goshen. The royal court consisted of princesses Sue Gross, a junior, and Lynne Ryder, Sandy Bradford, and Pat Wosneski, all seniors. The princes were seniors Richard Rich, David Mance, Gordon Morrell, and Tim Schofield. One of the more profitable of the many concessions booths was Wet and Wild, set up by a group of enterprising eighth graders. At three throws for a quarter, students heaved wet sponges at the face of Mr. Loffredo. The Cartoonland theme gave the afternoon and evening the flavor of a winter Mardi Gras. By the next morning, however, the snow statues had tumbled and Cartoonland was once more the athletic field. 103 General Organization G. O. magazine drive helped buy band uniforms. Candidates listen attentively. Dave Mance does some campaigning. Fred Kennett docs some politicking. Band and Chorus The band and chorus of GCS are an integral part of our school life. As two of the most popular activities, they have provided entertainment for parents and faculty as well as the students. Under the dazzling direction of Mr. Paul Wright and Mrs. Fred Bator -ski, the band and chorus present spring and fall concerts to give everyone a chance to perform. The high school band also plays during the halftime at football games, bolstering our school spirit. Each spring the chorus present a Broadway musical which stars some of the finest in their ranks. This year's production was Lerner and Lowe's Brigadoon . 105 Future Farmers Under the guidance of their new director, Mr. Lewis, the Future Farmers have been very active this year. Many members were active in the American Grange Parade, the Chapter Meeting Contest, the State FFA Convention and the Orange County Fair. The Goshen Chapter of the FFA was proud to have their Vice-President, Jim Kennedy, elected County FFA secretary. In order to buy this year's awards and hold their annual banquet, the FFA busily sold cards and held a bake sale. Mr. Stewart's witty P.A. announcements publicized their Animal Health products. George Wit addresses fellow chapter members. Auto Mechanics Bob White, Ray Korycki, Rich Kimiecik, Neil Moorman and Jim Schoonmaker give a hot engine the once over in their auto mechanics course. 106 Future Teachers Future teachers line up with Mr. Musgrove. Future Business Leaders President Ruth Maney commands the attention of the Future Business Leaders. Latin Club Honor Society This year for the first time the Honor Society voted to sponsor a tapping ceremony for seniors in the fall as well as the traditional spring rite for juniors. Last autumn, five seniors were inducted into the Honor Society; Linda Dobrowloski, Vince Dutkiewicz, Brenda Witt, Bill Demerest, and Bill Friedman. Juniors admitted in the spring included Carrie Coon, Nancy Greenmam, Ann Yurchuk, Pat Lattimer, Rich Anderson, Larry Pfieffer, Margaret Lupin ski, and Ted Soto. It is hoped that the National Honor Society under the guidance of Mr. Lyons will again next year serve as an outstanding example for the student body. 1st ROW D. Hayes, E. Bach, K. Rakov, P. League's Northern Section championship and barely missed bringing home full league honors. In league play, Goshen defeated its nearest competitor by 15 points and went on to an unsuccessful bout with Newburgh for the county title. This year's Math. Team was comprised of eager seniors, juniors, and sophomores who have learned to appreciate mathematics not only for its scientific value but for its recreational merits. Team members included Rich Szefc, Mike Harragin, Cindy Howe, Robin Fogg, Vince Dutkiewicz, Steve Kohl, Nancy Greenman, Carrie Coon, Greg Vail, Rich Anderson, Herb Kolk, Judy Baldwin, Gail Littlefield, Jamie Monat, Rich Noha, Ken Heller, Aaron Neustadt, and Ira Neustadt. no Girls Athletic Association This year, the Girl's Athletic Association has grown considerably in both members and activities. It has initiated invitational teams in hockey, softball, soccer, basketball, table tennis, bowling and badminton. For the second year, the GAA has won the championship in hockey and soccer in the Invitational Playdays. The GAA also contributed players to the Newburgh Minor Sports Day and the Playday at OCCC. To celebrate their triumphant year, the GAA held their annual picnic in Orange County Park in May. The ball has all of the attention. The GAA hotshots pose prior to a scrimmage. Thanks to the able guidance of Mr. Harold Innocent and the direction of stage manager John Mahoney and especially to the lonely soul up in the spotlight room, our numerous assemblies and shows succeeded.
