BROOKS PRESIDENT OF G.S.T.C. B.A., University of New Hampshire M.Ed., Boston University D.Ed., Boston University - I..m. Aeereditstien .invelves everyone: Dr. Yerk, Dr. Breaks, Dr. Mitehell. Deer Members ef the Class ef 1934: I am writing this letter on Monday evening, November 25, 1963. Yen will recognize this as the day culminating the tragic events ssseeieted with the assassination ef President John F. Kennedy. My thoughts, therefere, en this eeeesien ere semewhet selemn. But the tragedy of these days and the turmoil in which we as s. nstien new find ourselves demand selemnity. The impeet ef the passing of eur 35th president en the students of this eellege was ehvieus. Yeu were sheeked, and net unlike the rest of the netien, yet: called upon yeur spiritual heritage and rededieeted yourself te the esuse ef righteeuseess and justice. Will this dediestien be just snether emetienel eut- hurst or will it really mean something for all time in our lives? 0f ene thing I am eertein, there is me better pleee fer the een- tinustien of this dediestien and spiritual awakening then en the campus ef e tesehers eellege where the hepes ef eseh generation een be insured. This eeuntry needs new? as it has never needed befere, people in the teaching profession who are truly dedieated. It needs peeple te teseh kindness, humility, eeurege, telersnee. self-sserifiee end henesty, all of whieh lead tn the eternal verities that edueetien itself eentinues te seek after. If yen weuld dedi- eete yourself to yeur prefessien then, a step eleng the way weuld be the development ef these virtues within yeurself. Fer eertsinljur kindness esnnet be taught by the cruel, ner humility by the erregsnt. A ehild will net learn eeursge from s eewerd, ner telersnee from the intelerent. And if greed and everiee are e pert ef eur ewn mske-up, we can net eslI upen the youth ef today to make the self-seeriliee that will be se neeessery in te- meri-ewis werld. In a telegram te Mrs. Jeequeline Iiemmdsr sent by me en Ne- vemher 23, I made this statement, HStuclents of this eellege, es prespeetisre teachers, pledge themselves te werk fer a eentinus- ban of the great humanitarian prejeets fer whieh he gave his life. F 126 Class of 1964 Pregreeeive Change epitomizes enr fenr years at Cnrhan'i State Teachers College. We have changed train anaieua, wavering freshmen to a eenfident, aerieua grnnp with a professional Hair. This was in part an antgrewth of the progress enr enllege has made in four flying years. Neat tn the elder briek build- ings were built new - Upton Hall, tdedieatedl, Weedward Hall, the new Libraryr building, the weII-planned gymnasium, and the new men's derm. The meat transformed eampna building was eld Certhell Hall. Within these buildings we saw a change in administratien and faculty, ten. We remember the eelnrful academic prneeaeinn which led Dr. Kenneth T. H. Brenke to his inanguratinn es nnr new president. The daily' enrrienlnm waa imprnved and expanded tn include an evening aehnnl. It reached heights that ensured accreditation and renewal in the New England Aaaeeiatien. Seeing aneh prngreaaive ehangea in action and deed, we the Class of 1964 feel, alnng with pride, a deep perannal gratitude. In the fall at 1960 the largest elaae tn rnatrieulate at Gerhani State Teachers College chase and elected ita 6rat eiheera: Iamea Shane, president; William Fees, viBE-preeident; Ellen Murphy, secretary; and Arnnld Dickinson, treasurer. A enmrnittee worked titligentljfr to draft nnr ennstitntinn ithe Brat class to ratify nneli and tn present the annual Harvest Hall. We were bristling with energy when we returned as Snphnmeree in 1661. That yearia officers were Charles Berry, president; Arnnld Dickinson, vieei-preaident; Donald Hawnaley, treasurer; and Elizabeth DeGraaf, secretary. Our elaaa niern- hera dizzily balanced between studies and eatra-enrrieular activities with euphe- rnerie enthusiasm. Busy and rewarding was our third year at Gnrham. We re-elected Charlie Berry as president, along with Phil Jewett, viee-preeident. Linda Kerwin, treas- urer, and Bettyr Verrill, secretary. Almnat everyr organization on the Hill was led by nne of our class members. A rnajnr activity was the- publishing of the HILL- CREST fer the Class nf 1962 under nnr hardnwerking ee-editnre, Lynda Wilenn and Richard Bncknell. Our last year was divided in mere ways than nne. Half nf us each semester were in student teaching, while the rest were deep in enllege studies. Tngether nnly en Fridays, we felt nnr ernntinne, hennaI divided. The end of our stay at Gnrhani State Teachers Cnllege approaches as we prepare to leave this house of knowledge. But we sense a beginning - as better persons, as strengthened American citizens, and as dedicated members of the teaching prefeaainn. Our elaae nHieere have tried tn strengthen nnr nninn. We elected the following: Charles Gaspar, president; Richard Bueknell, viee-preaident; Linda Bagley, secretary; and Iehn Laakey, treaanrer. Our four years have been aided and inspired by him Ene advisers, Dr. Elizabeth Kerr and Mr. Harald Newberger. Te there we extend our aineereat thanks. We have been iCharnpat' in aeadernie henera, in aperts, and in ether aetivitiee. Often we have wen fer the sake of nnr Alma Mater. But eernetirnee we have last. Win er Inae, we have learned much from the guidance of nur administration, faculty, and en-wnrkere. We will always be indebted tn the College for painting tn the hnriznn and eharting our orbit. Proud tn have been a part at Gnrham State Teaehers College, we leave with the hepe that she is aa proud of us, the fruit at progressive change?! We were impressed by the friendliness Elf the upperelassmen and the warm relation- ship between students and faculty. Our class was seen erganized, the following efHeers having been ehesen to lead us: Peter Heft, president; Daniel Cifelli, viee president; Neney Randall, secretary; and Jacquelyn TardiEF. treasurer. Seen thereafter a seeial eemmittee was ehnsen. and plans Fur dances and ether eetivities were under way. Our Erst-yeer men have participated in every spert en the Hill but have distinguished them- selves in basketballt The women of $67, affiliated with W,A.A., were preminent in intramural sports. Ana we are proud of the terrifie jeb dene by four of eur girls on the Varsity Cheerjrrgj'r Squad: Faye Mixer, Jean Ryan, Linda StaEkD, and Jacquelyn Tardiff. Sinee this year's freshmen are reputed to be brains, they strive ten put studies Hrst. Still, theyr Fmd time fer extra-eurrieuler aetivities, parties, and even be?! sessions. As a result, we have fend memeries at our first year at G.S.T.C.: the big rush by the upperelessmen beyst the mayor eempaign, get-tegethers in the derms, the excitement et' games, the pressure ef rules and regulatiuns, the tensien nf taking; Hnelsl and the delight in making new end last- ing friends. 154 Area equals base times the height 5.
