No, you see, this particular morning marked the beginning school days of about 38tFreshmen. If one would look around and remark about something about the green Freshies and some-Freshman overheard it, nothing was said in response, in fact a bright, friendly smile was flashed in the direction of that grown up upper classman as much as to say, We're not as green as some people think we arep. Perhaps these friend- ly smiles and greetings of the Freshmen of '43, now the Seniors of '47, were the characteristics which won the friendship of everyone. Now all Freshmen classes are not so dumb, and this particular class proved it when they elected their class officers: President-Edris Jarrett, Vice President-Bob Knoke, Secretary-Charolette Lunsford. The most outstanding activity was the combined Freshman-Sophomore hay- ride, which started more than one new romance. The second year of our high school Work was started with a feel- ing of being much more capable and efficient in our Work. The following class officers: President-Bob Knoke, Vice President-Edris Jarrett, Sec- retary-Charolette Lunsford. Even though we were older and felt so much more grown up, we were sorry to lose about fifteen of our class members, The Iunior year of any class makes them perk up and take an inter- est in everything, encluding extra activities. For instance there was the Junior-Senior banquet at Giant City Lodge, Ah, to think back on that exciting night---rain and everything. The hall was beautifully decorated by our sponsor, Mr.. Sabella, and six helpers. The members of our class had decreased until only 22 members were left. We were still not discouraged and the following officers were chosen to guide us through a successful year: President-Ralph Twenhafel, Vice President-Robert Knoke, Secre- tary-Dean Hindman. Now we are up to the present date and we are the Seniors of 347- Looking back over the pleasant yearscdfstudy and play, time seems to have flown away. We are still that happy-go-lucky gang of students. At the beginning of school the following officers were chosen: President, Kenneth Rohlfing, Vice President, Sonia Rednour, and the Secretary, Eilene Mezo- Two Sgt. of Arms were also elected-Clarence Christensen, and Ralph Twenhafel. We have had several activities thus far and one, our play Toby' Helps Our was very successful. We operate a candy stand to make money to buy something to leave to the school after we graduate. As the year is slowly declining, We the Senior class, feel somewhat sad to think of leaving our old school and so many good friends. It seems time has gone by so quickly we hardly know any of our friends too well. To the underclassmen'-we .want to leave this shinning reminder--0 Keep on smiling, kids, as you plug along, for in just a short while, you too, will be Seniors. , ------Eilene Mezo 1 EVF fTEIiEi- ' 4 . It's the telephone and I in my lavish home am about to answer the telephone. The Conversation: Hello? Who Eloise, Oh yes, Eloise Galel We graduated toget- her back in '47, Golly, 20 years ago, along with 23 others. What happen- ed to them? Hum, I wonder if I know. Oh, surely, you've heard about Ralph Twenhafel. Goodness, I thought that everyone had heard about his success in the car business, since his discovery of gas made from crushed tree leaves, and his in- vention of the Twenhafempty automobile. This auto is supposed to be one of the best cars made, better even than the Ford's. Even Roger Mizer has one, and you recall how stuck he used to be on the Plymouth. What! You don't remember Roger! Why Lucy, how could you forget that dashing, love 'em and leave 'em Senior. Evidently he loved and left once to often, cause he's still single and is considered quite a catch around Hollywood. He plays villian parts in the movies. And how Gorham has grown! The new parts of town were most- ly started by Seniors of '47, There is the library founded by Dean Hindman called Hindman Horrors , and he has only horror and mystery stories. He has written several books, one entitled Horrible Isn't It . Dean has a beautiful Irish wife, met her through the Pen Pals we had in our Senior year. Gorham is a highly educational town now, as Edris Jarrett and Bob Knoke have started a college here. Bob is still interested in sports and is coach of the team at his college, very popular too. Edris teaches Home Ec. and P.E. Edris and Bob are both married and Edris does a very good job of I keeping house, raising children, and teaching. Bob's wife is a model for the art classes at the college. Speaking of teachers, I know you won't believe it but Melvin Fritsche and Leroy Darnstaedt are both teachers. Leroy teaches History at S.I.N.U. and Melvin at the Gorham College. Demerits are their by- word, and I hear that they are really straightening the kids out. This will amaze you I know but it's the truth. Charolette Luns- ford and Doris Cox are running a restaurant, making a fortune off the Coxburger and Lunsecue. Charolette married soon after we graduated and has had three husbands since. Babe too, has led a merry life. I know of four husbands, but what happened to them is a mystery to us. The candy business in jones Ridge is thriving. Kenneth Rohl- fing is very proud of his discovery that enables him to sell those car- mels 5 for one cent. Gosh, how he used to gripe about paying a penny apiece for those he used to eat in history. Kenneth is still looking for just the right girl . He plans to look in Hollywood next. 1 I4 L, rv! .ff 2 ,S 9 When Carol and Eilene were voted most likely to succeed they were slated for the right thing. They have succeeded. Golly the way we used to speculate about those two! Will they or won't they? They did! They were married soon after Carol graduated from his pilot training. They now have six kids. Their names are Betty, Sonia Eloise, Ralph, Carol and Eilene. Nice family, Eh. . James Tindall is still a great athlete, although it is time for him to retire from the basketball ring. Wop is still yelling for him and Wop and james Ir. yell right along. Did you read about jim Mifflin in today' s Vasquez Gab 7 The very first person to dig all the way to China, Golly am I proud to have known him. Sonia R. went far in the field of Music. Now she is leading an Orchestra of her own at Carnegie Hall. At last her dreams are realized. johnny McLaughlin really put life in the A.A.A. I do believe he has the farmers organized enough to go on a strike. Twenty years ago, that would have been next to impossible. Even though Shirley and Earl were the most bashful boys in the class of '47, they made quite a wrinkle in the world. Shirley is manager of an Orphans Home and in his spare time -operates a Lonely Hearts Club. KI think that is where Doris Cox got her husbandsj Earl is his assistant in everything. The Christensen dairy products, run by Clarence is thriving. Butter has gone down to twenty cents a pound through his efforts. He has done his share for mankind. Oh yes, Clarence has one of those helicopters! He has quite a time in it they say. Donna Rae is a dentist. She can really jerk out the snags, must be pretty good for that's where .Mr. Dunn and Mr. Leinert got their store teeth . Most of her patients are men. Lucky Donna. Is that all the Seniors? Oh, Wilma Porter. Wilma has been gone from here a long time. She married an explorer and sailed for Africa. No one has heard from her since. I'm in the newspaper business now. Editor of the Vasquez Gab . Miss Slechticky writes the comic strips, Miss Colonius is Society Editor and Mr. Dunn writes the sports columns. The rest of the teachers are sorta fuzzy i.n my mind Cas usual? but I do know that Mr. Leinert left the High School to become principal of the college. You'd never know him now, as he doesn't have a hair on his head. Miss Henson hasn't changed much except that her hair is en- tirely gray. Oh yes, she finally married Charley, but she is still teaching. 'lin 2.,.' ,.., I .fu . ,gm . V. 1 - , wi, If' if , V . , K, . nik., X yi , Ig' - Q k , 1 13:5 1- WL? 3'-. ' V :D e 3 . A group of high school students are out to Will a play contest and the play, a serious one, goes Over as hilarious Melodrama. Everyone regards the play with dead seriousness except the cut-up Toby who plays the part of the poor old Mother. While the heroine pleads with the cruel villian to spare her poor old Mother, Toby rigged out in a Woman's garb, clutches his hair in des- pair and removes his Wig. He falls off a stool and goes through other antics that convulses the audience but makes the cast ready to murder him. I.n addition to all the other troubles, characters forget their cues and comical mistakes occur. ln the end the group is just heart broke, but the judges decision arrive to delight them so the play ends with every- one celebrating the happy ending. We started out with 56 members, but by the end of the year we had only 49 left. Miss Henson, our class sponsor assisted us in selecting the following officers: President -------------- ---- I im Qualls Vice President ----------- --- Ramona Foncree Secretary and Treasurer ------- Sue Pyron Sergeant at Arms -------------- Hattie Killian This year, as intelligent Sophomores, we were added to the list of upper-classmen and no more will be called Green Freshiesn. We began by electing the following officers with the help of Mr. Dunn, our Sophomore sponsor: President -------------- --- - Kathleen Demster Vice President ----------- ---- M artin Shields Secretary and Treasurer -------- Sue Pyron Sergeant at Arms --------- -- Lawrence Gale Russell Moore At the beginning of this year, seven of the former members failed to return. To sustain this loss we have four new members from Murphysboro. They are Anna Lou Kloepper, Carl Dean White, I. D. Dycus, and Sherman Dycus. We are proud of this year's athletes. Those from the Sopho- more class are as follows: First team--Jim Qualls and Charles Lindsey Second team- -Russell Moore, I. D. Dycus, and Leonard Worthen. After several days we decided we needed someone to head our class in educational and social matters. so we proceeded to elect officers. They were as follows: President ------------ ---- B etty Russell Vice President ------------ --- Norma4Vasquez Secretary and Treasurer -------- Ruth Jarrett Sergeant of Arms ---------- --- Betty Bellmer Jack Brown Jnder the care -of Miss Henson and careful attention of our upperclassmen I not knowing what to expect nextl we started on our journey. During the first part of our flight we had an initiation plan- ned for us, to test our wits, and provide entertainment for everyone. As we flew along on our flight, we picked up two more pass- engers, making a total of fifty-seven passengers on our journey towards education. Some of our crew members were interested in athletics so several of them have taken part in our baseball and basketball teams. The first event was a truck hayride to Riverside Park. Inclu- ding guests, there were forty present. Plans are being made for a roll- er skating party. We hope to continue our flight for the next three years. BY Norma Jean Vasquez w ' Mihf' 3 ': S-Q . Al- though a voice cannot bef tuned like an instrument, by listening to yourself sing your voice- can be brought up to pitch as well as an instrument. Some of the most beautiful music is made by women's voices. Certainly this chorus has not contradicted that state-+ ment. If anything they have strengthened it. The school may-well be proud of their Girls' Chorus. The chorus is .planning to enter the district contest this spring, they have every hope of receiving high recognition there. The Chorus has sung at several public meetings already this year, twice at P. T. A. meetings and also at the Pep Club Amateur Show. Ten of the members of chorus attended the chor- al clinic at Carbondale. This clinic is held annually at the Shryock Auditorium. This year the guest conductor was Dr. Olaf Christiansen, who is one of the greatest conductors to be found anywhere. With his brother Neil Kjos he was founder of the St. Olaf College of music -----Sonia Rednour BAND The Band this year is conducted more like a class than ever before. Since most of the members of band are beginners, the text- book, Easy Steps to the Band , is very useful. In the beginning the selections are very simple, and as the students become more ad- vanced in the playing bf their instruments, the music becomes harder. In addition to this, the band is practicing on some numbers that are to be played at the district contest. Already this year the band has played for the carnival, basket- ball games, and the senior playQ On April 18, together With the other music classes, the band is going to do its part to make the annual spring concert a success. It has been a long time since the band has gone to the District Contest. This year they are going to try their luck at this contest. Every thing will not depend on the luck because every member in the band is practicing every spare minute he can to improve his technique. On April 19, when the contest is held, they are sure the judges will place the G.C H S band in the first division. ----Sonia Rednour 4 ,,,v,. Club was organized last year, consisting of all girls interested, whether or not they are in P. E., with Miss Henson as head of the club. As the first event of the year, the charter members took it upon themselves to initiate, in the proper manner, and with in due ceremony, the new arrivals to the club. The newcomers were very good sports, and came to school dressed in the designated manner, representing old fash- ioned farm Wives. The initation proved one thing at least, those girls have imagination, although it is doubted that the farm wives represented would have been very much flattered. The income for the clubcomes from dues paid twice a year by the members, by the members. Officers chosen by the club to perform for them this year are President Hattie Killian Vice President Vanita Rathjen Secretary-Treasurer Sonia Rednour At all parties this year, all charter members of the club are invited, Graduates or otherwise. PEP CLUB This year the Pep Club was reorganized again with a swell group of active girls. The club is under the leadership of Miss Slechticky. This year our club held an Amateur Show on November 5, 1946. It was very successful and everyone responded splendidly. The club also chose their new cheerleaders for the year. The Pep girls chose the six girls they liked best. Then the assembly chose the final three leaders for the year. ln the final vote Hattie Killian, Charolette Lunsford and Edris Jarrett were chosen. The officers for our club this year are. President Hazel Gale Vice President Eilene Mezo Secretary-Treasurer Betty Vasquez The dues for our club are twenty cents a semester. The charter members of this club were happy to have so many girls. interested enough to join. The Pep Club has several parties scheduleg this year. This act was that the Federal Government Was to give to the State Government certain sums to be given to schools to help pay the salaries of vocation- al teachers. Illinois also allots funds for this purpose., In this state schools are reimbursed 5096 of vocational teachers salary if he teaches vocational subjects only. State and Federal officials state the educational requirements of these teachers. Vocational Agriculture is very much like Home Economics in that it is supposed to be Dractical and meet the needs of the communityl The course of study here shouldlvary from that ina school in central Illinois. One requirement is we have 400 minutes class time per week, a portion of this is for supervised study and the remainder for discuss- ion. Another requirement is six months of supervised project work. This is how the boy is to get his start in farming. The reference mat- erial is books, bulletins, circulars, and other literature from agricultur- al colleges and the United States ,Department of Agriculture. FUTURE FARMERS of AMERICA This is a National Organizationzwhich started in 1928. Our chapter is a partof the Illinois Association of Future Farmers of America which is a part of the National Organization. We have various meetings, fairs, contests, etc. One example is the Sectional FFA Fair which allots about S1300 as prize money for projects of FFA, boys in about 22 schools in southern Illinois. Meetings include State and National Conventions held annually. FFA boys also have recreational meetingsf-the first one was the hay-ride last fall. Possibly there will be a summer trip of some sort. After read ing and discussing the literature, we finally decided that 2542 for a book wasn't too much to deduct from our weekly allowance. Sixteen boys and girls joined t.hat morning and have been enjoying their books emmensely. As the club grew the students of other classes became inter- ested and now our club membership is 110. Friday February 28, the sixteen charter members met and set Thursday March 6, as the day for initiation of all new members. The y were required to dress to represent a character from sone book, play, poem or comic strip they had read. Many famous characters were rep- resented such as Little Red Riding Hood , '6Popeye , Dagwood , Huckleberry Finn , Little Black Sambo , '6Tom Sawyer?', and many others. From these the judges chose Jeanne Smith dressed as Popeye and Martin Shields dressed as 'GDagwood as the winners. Each was presented a book from the club as a gift for their efforts. For every four-books purchased the company presents one free book, thus keeping the interest of the student. The following students were elected as officers of the club. Awards The Daughters of The American Revolution award is pre- sented to one senior girl. They are chosen as follows. The senior class vote on three girls whom they believe are best qualified as good citizens on the basis of Dependability, Service, Leadership, and Pat- riotism. The senior class chose Edris Jarrett, Betty Vasquez and Eilene Mezo. Cut of the three, the faculty members chose Betty Vasquez the good citizen. The winning girl receives proper recognition the award de- pending on travel condition at the time Continental Congress is held. ---Norma Cluster HOT LUNCH PROGRAM We are proud to again be able to offer got Lunches to the students. We now have our own cafeteria this year in the basement of the school. Many improvements have been made and we think it is in pretty ship-shape condition. Mrs. Foncree is again our cook. We feel that she is doing a splendid job. Two students help her each period of the day. Due to circumstances beyond our control we had to raise the prices to 15 cents per day. Fortunately this doesn't seem to de- crease the number of students eating daily. ---Ramona Foncree fYKGY'1!
