He was a member of the United States Marine Corps and lost his life in the battle of the Solomon lslands in the Southwest Pacific. HG WaS born SCP- tember 23, l925, at Bush, lllinois. He was the son of Mrs. Amanda Monzulla. His grandfather, Hr. James Einckney Rouse is a resident of Gorham. Many of Eill's childhood days were spent in Gorham. He attended school and high school here in Gorham and would have been a member of the l944 graduating class. Though young in years, he desired to be in the armed forces cf our country and proudly wore the Uniform of a Ma- rine. We will always remember Eill as the cheerful, happy lad with the sunny smiles------the brave Marine faithful to the end who gave his life for us. H'Twas yesterday that he walked out-- cheerful, happy glad-- To go and do what he could do Our boy, our own brave lad. He didn't think of self l'm sure-- adventurous it would he-- Proud of the uniform he wore Prdud of the land of the free. Happy and glad that he had a place-- so he sailed the troubled sea-- And gave his all for his country America, and you and me. He was just a village lad, who marched in the march of time, But his star has turned to gold today And for Gorham High it will always shine. We can't be watching for his return but always shall we behold, And love and reverence that one little star That so soon was changed to gold.q 7. Monday morning, September 23, l943--the first day of school in Gorham Community High School-fmuch as usual-- cld acquaintances, new faces--HHi Maryn---HHello EobH-- Udlad to see you back, Annie.n f Yet the Senior Class felt something amiss--a loss in our circle of friends accumulated in three years of high school. Someone was missing. No one mentioned the loss, but every Senior Was con- scious of the fact that there was no Jim to dodge with uis friendly UHiU accompanied by a thump on the head or a steg- erine blow between the shoulders. Funloving, hearty, and friendly--sometimes boisterous--but courteous toward teachers and older people--always in the midst of things and the life of our group. Basket ball season--a lifelong team mate, a swell athlete, and the best of good sports was missing. Another boy took the vacant place on the bench, but no one will take Jim's place. Demerits? Little mischievous stunts? Jim, our class- mate and friend, would have been a part of them. Merits? Commendable worth-while achievements, such as the paper, the annual, scrap drives, and other activities? Jim would have done his share. As we carry out these tasks, as We plan this annual, Jim's memory is with us. Graduation Exercises--the seats ere filled--all but one--in our hearts we will never forget--a plece vacant-M Yours, Jim. 8, D my . 2 , , -Y , v 1 0 N. ,xc- ' N , M' , 2 ' 3 3 - 4 ,. YOUR SCHGOL AND YOU If you want to go to the Kind of a school That's the hind of a school you like, You needn't slip your clothes in a grip And start on a long, long, hike. You'll find elsewhere what you left behind For there's nothing that's really new, It's a knock at yourself when you Knock your school It isn't your school, it's you. Real schools aren't made by pupils afraid Lest somebody else gets ahead, When everyone works and nobody shirks You can raise a school from the dead. And if while you earn the honors you crave X Your neighbors may earn some too, XX Your school will be what you want to see, It isn't your school, it's you. And if in life your battle is won Through constant toil, and morals true It's the cooperation of more than one, It is the work of your school and you. From the nHandbooKH of . We appreciate their efforts and cooperation in solving all the problems met in conjunction with carrying on our activities. A few years ago, Mr. Hubble, with the cooperation of the board, succeeded in bringing the matter of the new ad- dition to a head. Due to the shortage of materials and labor the building has been very slowly erected. We have been enjoying the comforts of the new study hall and a few new class rooms. The combined auditorium and gymnas- ium, one of the largest in Southern Illinois, is nearing completion. We hope to be able to use it soon. The present members are: Pres. Mr. P. A. Hogenmiller Mr. P. In another hour we will he out of this institution and not a bit regretful either. If anyone should ask us if we are sfniors we'dHlet'em have itn, because they ought to tell by ooking at our faces. That music that we have to ma ch to sounds like some funeral march. If they want to mgke us happy, have them play something that is in the groove. I can't see why everyone gets such a thrill out of graduation. In the first place we have to sit for an hour and listen to a speaker. Rather dull to my notion--- The faculty will be wearing stars on their lapels next for thinking up such bright ideas as having us go to Mr. Hubble for a pass after we have taken a little time out when we get tired of school. They don't seem to recognize our superiority around this place. Mr. Hubble can't bear to see anyone not slaving over lessons. He expects us to keep on going without taking a nap in the study hall and is always disturbing us out of our meditations. He also thinks we should attend school every day without fail. More consideration by him would please the seniors and entire school. t Now that Mr. Dunn never fails to give us an assign- ment that takes all our time to figure out. And in Physics he gives a test every day Calmostl. ' Miss Henson has no consideration whatsoever for us. Why she just comes barging in after school has been going on for two days. We were getting along just Swell without her. Miss Slechticky has a capacity for work like nobody's business and expects everyone elso to have the same. Mrs. Jacobs never gives us enough time to finish our Home Ec. Scrapbooks. She has nothing else to do but grade them, so why not give us at least another week? We've never heard Miss Shultz or Miss Gaunt complain about us students. Maybe they really appreciate a good bunch of seniors when they sae one. Come to think of it, 25. n ,, , . ' 5 .. b- ' I L. ., I Miss Shultz has peculiar ideas aboutgour fchewing EQD ln her classes, and she actually sgpgsgg us toilook UP fW0fdS in the dictionary. I guess Miss Gaunt is just a little slgg catching on, and.after she+s been .here 8 llttle longer, she'll be just like the rest.' W ' . . '. There's Richard. He's always talking to the. giFlS. We can't even talk back because he does it all. ' You'd think Bud Demster would get tired of talking, but if no one will listen to him she will keep on 'talking and listen to himself. ' - Ruby Mankenp is 'sbs sWeetest'kid'I fCgButiWho :likes si kid??J None other than a UMinkU and it seems as.if he has her. S g That Marjorie Lunsford is the smallest tnfng,I'm glad I'm not so little--at least I can see where . I'm 'going when I sit in the front seat of an automobile.f. Allf Norma Lee were twins we couldnft stand the noiset Clf she says lOO words in a day we all miss our guess.D y It's ridiculous how Edna Mae studies her history. She practically, knows the book by heart. Oh well, 'who cares what Christopher Columbus did, anyway? ' Bill Knoke--the big flirt--is always teasing 'some girl. We can't even talk back---he's only 6'2U. I could tell you more if he Wouldn't be looking over my' shoulder. Go away Bill -------- . June K. is the quietest student. It looks,as if shc'd make a little noise and get some demerits like we do when we drop our pencils. I Wouldn't you think Jewel C.Would get tired gf Writing shorthand. Maybe she'll d6CidC that it isn't so easy, a little later on. , ' ' Lawanda and Annie.are usually seen and heard from- too, Why can't they be calm for two minutes? , yi It looks as though'Cecilia would Wear out the Way she hammers on a typewriter. She should. go slow and easy and make thc thing last longer.. - l A Peggy has a mania for telling jokes and laughing' at them herself. She and Jean K. are a good pair because they just take one look at you and start to laugh-the cads. 26. 7 4 Bob Crain is the nuttiest guy. You'd think he's the president's son because of his egotism. He never takes any thing seriousga history exam, cold, a pencil or even a set of locker keys. ' - Thelma G. the darling, is true to all the sailors, soldiers and, yes,the civilians too. Especially those from Grand Tower. I wish she would make up her mind once. Poor Agnes and Alice--their last names both begin with WEN, therefore they are always at the head of the class. They have to sit in the front of the room and never get to play in class. Bob Reames will be only too glad when rabbit season opens again. That is the time he is absent from school C?J It seems he gets tired of coming here every day. There's Delphine. I guess this is a rather lonesome place for her. With that piece of glass on her finger she doesn't have a thing to worry about. Last, but by no means least, is John Lawrence Choate, Jr. With a handle like that he may be a famous movie star some day?-the Romeo. I I must end this piece of propaganda now. Hubble is still worrying about his Foro. Will he wake it to graouation exercise? Say! That brings up another question. Will the auoitorium be reaoy for com- mencement? .Why should we worry? That will take care of its self. If we worry too much we will have gray hair at a very early age. Our entire class is very grateful to Miss Slechticky for her kino ano unoerstanoing ,guioance throughout the year. Yes, we seniors oo have a lot to be prouo of. Nows there's Bill Knoke, our rresioent. He's also our Romeo. Every Qirl flutters her eye-lies when he walks by. Eona Mae Saul is our historian. If she ever loses Muzzey, the whole senior class will he sunk. Of course there has to be a oascot for our class ano that is none other than Bu6 Demeter. He is also our biggest pest. We ought to be thankful he's not twins. Bob Crain is an honorable rember of our class. Uncle Sam is holoina ur the war just so--OUR-classmate can make this exit with a bang. Alreaoy we have a future teacher in our riost. Besides the fun provided by auctioning all the boxes, there was a variety of entertainment consisting of a fishing pond, cake walks, cake guesses, and various contests Everybody wanted to guess the contents of a small cake baked in the form of a lamb. Katherine June Snider Won by guessing what-it contained ---- a small American Flag. SQ The Senior Glass Gorham High School Gorham, Illinois Dear Schoolmates, Here it is the latter part of the Second Semester, and you are thinking about graduating. How we shall hate to see the day some when we shall bid you farewell!!! We Know we can never be as much help to the teachers as you have been. We admire you for your dignity and studious behavior at all times, especially in the classrooms and the study hall. We shell try to follow your example, but some- times we are afraid we shall never come up to the standard set by you. we pay trubute to the Seniors of '44 for being the most outstanding class ever to graduate in this school. We shall miss your sweet, smiling faces as we saunter through the hall, moreover, we shall miss your chatter about the good times you had over the week-ends, when we sometimes wondered if all the things you did were really so much fun. Remember February 9, when you had your pictures taken. How important you were! And Lou we envied you for your pio- tures first in the annual with that coveted NSENIORSN in the middle, all in capital lettersg ' We, the Juniors of G. C. H. S. want to congratulate you on your twelve years of work and study, and now we wish you all the luck and happiness in the world. ' Yours truly, Junior Class P. S. They have the right spirit so more power to them and to Coach Dunn. A5 PEP CLUB The Pep Club is the only Athletic Organization in our school this year. In previous years we have had the Athletic Association, and at one time, The Red Pepper Club. , Members of the Pep Club had seats reserved on the school bus if the bus was used for transporting players to school games. Needless to say, they con- tributed their share to the noises and merriment on the bus. The outstanding achievement this year was the victory of the Pep Club Girls over the AthleticBoys in a magazine campaign. The girls sold more sub- scriptions by a margin of 558.00 to 343.00 for the boys Cthanks, Mr. Hubble for helping the 5irlsD.The crowning event of this contest was our hike over railroad tracks, muddy fields, hills and streams to the Woods where the girls ate the lunches provided by the losers, the boys. The girls all agree that the boys were good losers, excellent cooks and most gallant hosts! Qiiiaara ai Ban Slab PTQ5,w .--- -m-- ----- -Doris J. Korando Vice Pres.l-- ---- Eleanor Grosvenor Sec. What don't the boys get a chance to show their talents this year? Of course they do, but they must wait until Tuesdays and Thursdays for their chance as we now have both agirlsf and a boys' chorus instead of a mixed chorus. The girls' chorus has thirty memhers, and theofficers are: Fern Arheiter, President, June Kenpfer, librarian, and Tillie Jo Hiser, reporter, secretary, and accompanist. Because of the war program, gas and tire rationing, etc., the chorus will he unable to attend anycontestthat may be given. However, Miss Gaunt and the girls are working hard to preeare a program for their firstpuhlic appearance as soon as the new auditorium is finished. As the annual must be in Hr. Spicth's hands before this program is presented, we shall outline the plansfor the program as they stand nt the present time. The part of the musical entertainment which the girls' chorus will present is entitled, nAn OldSouthern Albumn. Fern Arheiter, as the narrator, tells the story of each portrait in the album while the chorus members colorfully dressed in formnls, sing songs of the south. Following is a hrief synopsis of this musical: The chorus sinus HBeautiful Dreamern after which Fern tells about the first page of the album on whichare portraits of HGreat Grandfnthern portrayed by Peggy Clendenin and pGreat Grandmothern hy Jewell Cluster.Next the chorus sings HPut On Your Old Gray Eonnetn. With the shifting of teachers, schoolbegan without a sponsor for the unrest news bringern. Miss Henson was finally chosen to direct the staff and quite late in the term the organization got under way with Marjorie Iunsford as editor-in-chief. Wilbur Clendenin imWGdlQt6iy launched into his campaign of business man- ner and did a very cspatle job of getting a long list of subscribers. Pencils and typewriters began tofly and work began in earnest. Then came illness, interruptions, delayse--,the Fountain bogged down. Eventually thelight began to gleam, and the crowning glory was the Review Issue. May the Fountain have a happier future in the years to come! MERIT SYSTEM With the help of the Faculty and Student Body, 'we feel that our new Hwerit and NDemcritnSystem, adopted last year, has accomplished something for the good of students as well as to better the school. For ccmmendd able and recognized activities, the students are given merits in accordance. At the end of the school year the merits for each student are added. Those having the highest number of msrits C102 of our student bodyb re- ceive an intellectual letter, G. We think of our 'mwn school as a Governmental unit with our own laws. For a violation or disregard of any of these laws, an of- fender is penalized with demerits. We have clerks and each merit or demerit a student receives is kept on re- cord. The merits a student receives giveshimencourage- ment. The demerits given makes a student stop andthink the next time, before he acts in an unseemly manner. We hope to see even greater improvement next year. TM GORANNUM The majority of the annual' staff was chosen from the commercial classes. All magazine and reference librarians, and all those who work in the library, are considered as members of the clrb. ' Due to the lack of bookcases and other equipment, which have not yet been installed, the Library Club has had very little opnortunity to work in the library. However , the members have arranged the books in alphabetical order on tables, until the new bookcases are installed. Several new books have been ordered this year to make our library more complete. - . Next year we plan to have tables in our study hall, instead of chairs as We now have. Our Home Economies I class the third and fourth hours started out with twenty-one Freshman and Sophomore girls. First, we studied personal appearance and personality in which We learned how to look nice as well as how to act correctly in any situation. In our clothing unit the fol- lowing ten weeks, each girl made a cotton house dress. The unit that proved to be the most fun was our Christmas unit. The girls made gifts for Christmas to help reduce the cost of Christmas shopping. Some very nice head scarfs, pot hold ers, home-made candies, aprons, stuffed toys, and articles of clothing were made and given as gifts C iust ask Miss Slechtickyf. The Home Economics I, in their last unit of this year are learning the basic fundamentals of simple meal planning and preparation. When this unit is complete, they will be able to make biseuits, pie crusts, sandviches, if, waffles, pop ov rs, muffins, and breakfast cereals.
